RE: syssa aircraft 30cc engine SAP-180HP
You won't get much lead out with the SAP 180. It is very light - 39 ounces all up. If you need weight go with a zenoah 26 or look for a EI converted Zenoah G38. Even old they are like the Energizer bunny.

RE: DA-50 vs ZDZ 50 NG?
ZDZ or DA? It's not really a fair comparison in 2009. Both are fine engines BUT the DA is state of the art and US supported by a fine group of guys out there in Arizona. Because the DA 50 is the predominant quality 50 cc engine out there, there is a huge user base on which to draw when you need information on set-up, props, gas mixtures, adjustments, etc. etc. Is there a flying field in the USA where there is no DA 50 used. Very few, I venture. The same is not true for the ZDZ. So everything else being equal, DA is the way to go if you want a quality engine.

RE: spe-26 in big stick
ORIGINAL: WCB About the vibration of the SPE... mine was so bad it literally tore apart the Funtana X100 I had it on. One of the fliers at my field is a retired industrial machinist. He volunteered to take the engine to his shop, tear it down and find the problem. He took the crank out and put it on a lathe and using a dial indicator found the crank to be slightly bent. The engine had never been crashed or dropped. Somehow he fixed the bent crank to within enough tolerance that he said it would be ok. I ran the engine on a test stand and it is much smoother now. It still has a little vibration to be expected, but nothing at all like it was. wcb
Very interesting observation. Further proof that the engine is fundamentally junk put together with bent (??????) parts. What are they thinking, that ALL Americans are stupid? Since I bought one I guess I am, anyway! RE: carb rebuilding
If you have a lot of problems with fuel leaks even after rebuilding, just replace the carb. Cost is only about $45 and is the airplane not worth having a reliable engine? Try the Walbro WT201-1 carb used on some 40-50 cc engines. It works very well. Check out: http://www.m-and-d.com/WL-WT-201-1.html Gerry Rosebery

RE: Best 26cc Engine
Of the 26's out there the Evolution 26 has a good rep but has that dog of a front carb (probably OK in a YAK though). The Zenoah 26EI is a rock solid performer but very heavy by today's standards. Check your balance. STAY AWAY from the SPE. It vibrates like the devil and is fundamentally junk. The RCGF works fine once it is broken in.

RE: spe-26 in big stick
I have to admit that the SPE 26 is fundamentally junk. I also have switched to the RXEL ignition and pitched the unreliable Melody unit that came with it. I agree that it is especially badly balanced and shakes like the devil at idle. It is clearly a cheaply made industrial engine. It vibrates a lot at 7000 rpm too and will cause airframe failure at some point. I had mine in my beautiful Aeroworks 73" Yak 54 (wonderful airplane BTW). It is a travesty to power it with the SPE.
ORIGINAL: Rcpilot $429 for a 30cc engine? [sm=lol.gif] Good luck with that...............
True, but you can buy Chinese garbage 26-28 cc engines or you can buy something made in the USA that will run beautifully and last a LONG time. I saw this engine at Joe Nall and it is a gem. It uses only a Chinese RXEL ignition. I am looking forward to getting one when they become available. Gerry Rosebery

RE: spe-26 in big stick
Have you checked the timing on your SPE? Mine was set to 45 BTDC and it ran like crap. It run much better when it was reduced to the STANDARD of 28-30 deg BTDC. The ignition by Melody is also not the best unit out there. If you have problems, change it out for one made by RXEL, available through CH Ignitions (and others). It is currently the gold standard of Chinese ignitions. That said, I agree, increase the prop (ground clearance permitting) to an 18x6. If ground clearance is an issue, try a 16x12. My SPE (not yet run in) is turning an 18x6 Xoar at 7000 even (altitude 300 feet above sea level). Because these Chinese engines are still so poorly fit together I have found that running the heck out of them on the bench is a good idea. I run a gallon or so of 32:1 ashless oil/gasoline through the engine at full throttle. It takes about 3 hours and afterwards they are much smoother, have better compression and no longer squeak and groan when you turn them over by hand. Gerry Rosebery

Fuji Engines
I have never physically seen a Fuji engine although Tower has been selling them for years. They are not especially cheap. Does anyone have anything positive or negative to say about them? For example, how does the 24EI compare to the Zenoah G26EI which is $30 less costly? Any feedback here? Thanks, Gerry Rosebery

RE: What to put a gasoline motor on my Extra 300 1.60 airplane. NEED HELP!!
Definitely NOT a 50 cc engine. Overkill supreme on a 74" model. The SPE 26 would be a great match. It is very very light for its size and cheap too. I would recommend the 3W 28 but it's way too heavy and very expensive now. Gerry Rosebery

I have tried that on my ZDZ 40 each time I take it out and it has never worked for me. It is always back to the close choke, flip til it fires, open choke and flip til it starts. The restarts are the big issue with me. It is really hard to restart mine warm. Gerry Rosebery

ZDZ 40 Question
I have a relatively new (1 gallon gas) ZDZ40. It is turning a 20x8 prop using fresh 93 octane gasoline mixed 32:1 with Pennsoil. Although it starts and runs sort of OK, it is quirky. It idles at 1200 and peaks at 6950 rpm. All the throttle response is in the lower half. It reaches 6900 rpm at about 1/2 throttle and then gives no more than 50 rpm more at full throttle (???) The Low End needle is fairly responsive but the High End needle can be turned 1/4 turn either side of what appears to be peak rpm with little effect on the top end. There is a mid-range burble that cannot be eliminated. If I get it to go away with Low End mixture adjustment, the engine will quit on fast throttle opening showing it to be leaned too much. Comments?? Thanks to all.

Great engine from an outstanding design team, BUT check the noise levels with this large cylinder - OVER 100 dba in testing. That's a lot of noise. Be aware of any club restrictions if you are thinking of this great engine!

Saito FG-36 Gasser
I note that this engine requires 20:1 fuel, for break in at least, very unusual for a gasser. I also note that there is no mention of needle bearings on the con rod. Please tell me that Saito was not dumb enough to put out a gasser that does not meet the basic standards of construction for this engine type. Please don't tell me they put bronze bushings in a $650 gas engine!!!

RE: Coke can carb fix
If you want something neat, remove the plate, drill and tap a center hole for a muffler pressure tap (or solder on a piece of 5/32" brass tubing). Solder the current hole closed. BME sells a plate already set up for most Walbro carbs. I think it costs about $25. http://www.bmeengine.com/html/accessories.htm BME CARBURETOR DIAPHRAGM COVER The new BME Carburetor Diaphragm Cover helps your engine to maintain consistent air pressure through your carburetor diaphragm at all times. This virtually eliminates the problems encountered when you adjust your carburetor on the ground, but experience inconsistent airflow and pressure entering your carburetor in flight, due to varying airspeeds. This inconsistent airflow can cause your engine to go lean or go rich depending on whether your plane is sitting still, flying slow, or at high speeds. Machined from Billet Aluminum, this carburetor diaphragm cover comes with a nipple and blue mounting bolts. It fits any engine using a Walbro SDC style carburetor, including BME twins, DA100 & 150, Quadra75 & 100, Brison 4.2 & 6.4 etc. The carb cover for for the BME twins also fits other engines using Walbro WGA ,WB and WJ series carburetors. The BME Diaphragm cover is now also available for the BME 44 & 50cc single cylinder engines. This is a great item to help reduce carb mixture from fluctuating in flight due to pressure differences affecting the diaphram. Simply remove the old cover and install the new BME cover with the 4 bolts included. Then run a fuel line from the nipple to inside the fuse where stable air is. PRICE: $25.00 each

If you switch to or are using a 2.4 GHz radio, you can use whatever you like. Personally, I don't recommend metal as it vibrates so badly on a big gasser. I prefer wood or carbon fiber rod.
