RE: The Shermans are in at Mato
First, thank you Swathdiver for your review. Second, I'm looking forward to hear from the others on the forum who've purchased this tank. It will be a lot better when more people chime in with their observations once they have it in hand. Hopefully they are honest, and subjective and help paint a good overall picture for what future buyers need to expect. Third.... I'm no "expert" on the Sherman in any capacity. It's never been a tank I've been horribly interested in, although the first R/C Tank I ever played with was a Radio Shack Sherman circa 1986. However, in looking at the perspective between the two tanks that Bubba posted- I don't think the Mato Sherman is all that bad. There are definitely differences but I don't find them to be THAT glaring to the point where this thing needs to be getting all of the negative press. I am in the same camp with others who believe that once people get them in and start "improving" that we'll see this tank in a much different light. There are a lot of talented people here and I have full confidence that they can take this tank and turn it into something we'd all give the "Thumbs Up" to. Who knows, perhaps I'll put this on my list of tanks to get down the road. I say this not because I think it's a bad looking piece of equipment, but because there are other tanks I have a much greater interest in that I want to build first. I'm a German/Soviet guy and I have a preference to Assault Guns/Tank destroyers. But- again, if I ever get the bug to do a VVSS Sherman I won't disregard this Mato release as an option. Sincere apologies if I've repeated what others have already said. I just felt it was a good time to pipe in from a neutral perspective.

RE: hl tanks
I'll throw in a good word for the Stug III. But I'm biased. :) As for only having one tank... I only have one. That's it. No more, no less. That is, if you only count 1/16th. We won't talk about the four 1/35th kits I have sitting on a shelf, and the two completed 1/35th sitting on my desk. We also won't count the wish list I have that includes one of each 1/16th tank that's being offered on the market. ......and the 1/6th .....and the 1/4th ....and the 1/1. Lets not get carried away though! [:D]

RE: Interested in Starting Out in Tank
If you take the time to water/weatherproof the electronics and running gear then there should be zero reason to fear running a Tamiya in the Snow/Mud. Just because a Heng Long is a cheaper to purchase tank doesn't mean that it by default is better for going out and "bashing" with. I've been in the R/C Car hobby for a long time, and I'll tell you what- cheaper is not always the better basher just because of not being "afraid to break it". (I also have an R/C Tank.. HL Stug III which I have invested some time and money into improving both functionally and aesthetically) Weather/waterproofing isn't that hard. Just have to make the electronics compartment "water tight" to keep moisture/debris out. There are a number of sealant compounds out there that you could use to do the job. I can't speak for Tamiya tanks and how "water tight" they come out of the box, but in the case of say- my Heng Long STUG there are some big openings under the fenders that allow stuff inside with the circuitry and gearboxes. That can be remedied by cutting some styrene/lexan pieces to fill the gaps. I wager if you were to run a search here on the forums you could find some topics on how to weatherproof electronics, and even the tank hulls themselves. The other important thing is to always do post-run maintenance when you're done playing. Open up the tank and make sure there isn't anything inside that's not supposed to be there. Blow it out with canned air or with an air compressor if you have one. Wipe it down and lubricate the bearings/bushings. Basic point, just properly maintain your stuff if you're going to run it outside in the Snow/Rain/Mud/Dust/Grime/Filth. Doesn't matter if it's a $600 Tamiya or a $100 Heng Long.

I've never ordered from Raidentech, but with all of the bad things I've read about them I wouldn't even risk it. I'd rather pay a little bit extra to a company that has a good reputation. Even with having a tight budget having the peace of mind that I'm going to get what I ordered is always worth a few extra bucks.
ORIGINAL: daisycutter redux p-1000 at 1/16? you could sit on the damm thing[:D]
Yeap. It would be a biggun for sure! According to my scale calculator it would be around 7 feet in length, two feet tall, and two feet wide. I'd probably build it out of aluminum and power it with 1/4 scale guts. It's just a dream for now, I don't have the equipment or funding to start such a project. But, it's always nice to have an ambition for "some day".

Hell, if it was "perfect" from the factory I'd not of taken the time to improve upon it By perfection of course, I meant me being completely satisfied with my work. The pursuit of perfection drives one to always raise the bar with their work. Something never achieved, but always striven for. I had a lot of fun doing it, and I've been doing 1/35th scale tanks as well. I'm looking to kit bash a T-34/76 for my next 1/16th project :)

Ok, don't laugh too much. This STUG was my first attempt at any kind of model painting/airbrushing since I was a child. I notice there is a spot or two that needs touched-up where the primer didn't get fully covered by the base coat... (The joy of photos.. bring out stuff you might miss!!). It's not modeled after any SPECIFIC Vehicle, but is "loosely" based around the Kursk engagement in '43. She's not perfect but we all have to start somewhere [:D] [image]http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb244/gerekeh/stugnewpaint.jpg[/image]

RE: any one here into short course trucks ? Check out HPI's latest
I too am glad to see HPI stepping up and producing a SC Truck. Variety and choice is always a nice thing to have. Something to fit the tastes of all really helps to keep the hobby strong. (Though it's too bad Losi's offering to the SC pool is ugly as sin, but hey beauty is in the eye of the beholder). I'd like to have one, but it's another case of too many wants, more needs, and not enough disposable income! That out of the way.. RE: Nitro/Electric Nitro has it's place and I think always will. I've enjoyed the nitro side of the house, to include Aircraft, Boats, and Cars. There is a draw to the sound of those little engines screaming along. There is a draw to learning how to tune them to that "Sweet Spot". I've had JUST as much fun with Electrics however. But when people make silly comments to the tune of "Electrics are for kids and instant gratification, Nitro is where the Big Boys play"... Come on. Lets get real about this. Hobbies are about having fun in the way we each see fit. It's not about comparing the size of our "transmitters". People just need to do what they enjoy the most and fudge all to everything else.

I'd buy a Savage. Then two years later I'd huck all the Nitro stuff into the trash can. I'd start putting together a list of things needed to convert it to brushless. I'd have decided I just prefer electric power..... Or, I'd of just not spent the $700 on a Nitro and put it towards a Gasser. I'd enjoy fuel being between around $2.80 a gallon vice $25+. On the other hand.. I'd decide that I'd rather have the Schecter Bass Guitar and get back into the Hobby I really loved but stopped indulging in 10 years ago....

RE: Your take?
My response stems mostly from the fact that there have been some forums that I participated in- That NO discussion ever seemed to avoid getting turned into some kind of flame fest.. Threads that would go for 30 some odd pages of name calling, re-hashed no where arguments etc. Granted these were computer game forums and well... Those can be some of the worst out there. I don't mind topics that follow a natural path of conversation. It's when they get derailed by people who are intentionally trying to be provocative to get people to react and thus- start a huge fire. On the flip side of the spectrum I don't like forums with heavily biased moderation.. Been there too. Also no fun. A happy medium is preferred. A place where things are kept free of the blatant attempts to draw the conversation into hostile territory- Or totally OT stuff that has nothing to do with the flavor of a forum. (OT Forums exist for a reason ya know?)

I'd stop participating in that forum. If the staff can't be arsed to keep things on topic and the spam/trolling to a minimum I'm not going to waste my time supporting their website. Editing in: Keeping things clean can also be in part the responsibility of the end users.. Meaning people that respond to derail attempts and trolls aren't helping the situation either.

RE: best nitro truck for under $300
I normally don't stay things like of this nature.. But this is one of those dime a dozen questions, use the search function and be a bit more proactive in finding the answers you're looking for. Look around the forums here. There are forums for Nitro MT's, Truggies, ST's... Even make specific like HPI, Traxxass, Losi. Spend some time reading them.. See what kind of questions other people are asking, and what people have to say. Look specifically for stuff pertaining to the technical side. Meaning- how easy/difficult is maintenance on a specific vehicle? What are the weak spots that are prone to breaking down? Then, if at all possible walk into a Hobby Shop and take a look at the Vehicles they have in stock. Pick 'em up and "kick the tires". Look at what kind of parts availability they have, ask the guys questions to see how much they know about what they have in stock. Get what looks/feels comfortable to you. If you look at a truck and think you'd not enjoy wrenching on it- Look at something that may be a bit more user friendly. Don't walk into it looking for the best. You're not going to get a straight answer- and as you can tell already these threads tend to turn into debates based around each persons particular tastes. I've owned several different vehicles made by different companies. They've all had their merits and drawbacks. The key thing is though, that I've enjoyed them all. One of the best pieces of advice so far has come from Sheograth- Avoid knock off companies. Spend the extra 50 bucks. Quality has it's price sometimes, but in the long run the higher initial cost will save you money down the road...

RE: Anyone looking forward to the Nitro Monster King?
Looks nifty. I'm a big fan of solid axle monsters as well.. Looks a lot more "scale" than the independent suspension trucks do. Plus I have a place in my heart for them due to the Clodbuster I had years ago. Had a ton of fun with it. I also really liked the Wheely King I had, but sold it to a friend who wanted to get into the hobby. Speaking of which, I'd wager this truck will handle like the stock WK.. Which is "Handling? Whats handling?!?" But, as others might say- handling and winning races isn't what these kinds of trucks are all about. They're about some good old fashioned back yard fun. If I wasn't going to convert my Savage over to brushless I'd pick one of these up. Can't afford to do both.
If they can't afford it now then wait until they can. I've seen too many people settle for something close to what they wanted & end up losing interest because it doesn't do what they want it to do.
Wholeheartedly agree. This type of thing almost soured me to the whole R/C Vehicle experience when I first got started 13 years ago. I bought a more "entry level" vehicle, a Kyosho Sandmaster ST-2- I had a lot of problems with it. Some of them were user related, but others weren't. In contrast, a buddy of mine purchased a Kyosho Nitro Pro ST. He payed about $120 or so more than I did and in the end.. He spent more time driving than I did. When a part for my ST-2 broke it was hard to get a replacement for it.. His vehicle however was built much better, more durable, and better parts availability. That was the lesson I learned with trying to go "too cheap" for my first vehicle. I wound up shelving the ST-2 and saved up the money to get a Tamiya Clodbuster. More money out the door, but had waaaaayyy more fun with it.

Kids watching never bothered me.. Unless of course they couldn't stay out of the way. Never want to hit someone. Other than that no problems at all. About a year ago I even had an older lady who was out walking her pug come watch for a bit. She let her dog off the leash and even he had a lot of fun chasing my Savage around.. Went slow so I wouldn't even risk hurting him. It was a lot of fun. However, the only kid I've let drive any of my R/C Vehicles is my daughter- she gets special privledges of course.

RE: KV POWER = TAPS for CATS
@sevoblast... Do I smell a KV-85??
The reality of the IR tank battle senario is that all these real world specifications and history have no meaning whatsoever on the toy battlefield. The Tamiya KV-2 will have no trouble traversing its turret on unlevel terrain. For the most part, it will be as fast as any of the other tanks on the field, including the Sherman. It won't cost any more to obtain than a panther or panzer IV and Tamiya will make far more than 250 of them, so I don't imagine it will be that much of a rarity on the IR battelfield. And it most likely will be more state of the art than the current F/O Tiger I kit And may very well not need any upgrades to make it "reliable" on the IR field (unlike the Tiger II). The only advantage I see the KV-1 having is that its TBU apple will be lower to the ground allowing it to hide better behind obstacles.
+1 as the forum saying goes. I think any and all new additions to this hobby should be welcomed with open arms (as long as a standard of quality is met!!). RSEA brough up another point which is the number of "Heavies" out there. That is one thing that's kept me away from being too interested in taking part in the "IR Battle" aspect of this Hobby. I would love to see a more balanced field out there, and of course it's not entirely the fault of the "end users".... There isn't a huge selection out there, but thankfully it's getting bigger. I'm super excited to see the KV-1 and KV-2 coming down the pipe. It makes for more variety, and the more it piques my interest into jumping in to the world of IR Battles. But then it'll be up to the hobbiests to be willing to forgo the "IFA" and be willing to hit the ground with a medium/light tank. I for one, as much as I like the "Cats" have no interest in buying or building one in 1/16th. My first 1/16th is a Stug III. I'm in a rough spot for deciding my next choice.. Torn between a T/34(With possibility of doing assault gun conversions), the KV-1 (either HL or Tamiya, just depends on budget) or a Pz III or IV. Given the nature of IR Battle rules, what is carrying the "apple" is a matter of aesthetics, and I'm all for a wide variety of eye candy. The 1/16th R/C market would really benefit fromt he additons of some lighter vehicles, and also it would be nice to see some British, Italian, and French additions. However of course all of this depends on an interest by the consumer. So for now.. these new Russian tanks are looking mighty good....... Edit: For anyone who's interested in the Russian side of WW2 here is a pretty good website.. www.battlefield.ru/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/lang,en/
