RE: five-cylinder radial engine homemade from five OS FS-70S II
Awesome work man! I've seen a similar twin made from cox .049's before, been wondering of possibilities with bigger engines.

Everything I've seen looks like the T-37 is officially called the Tweet, not a nickname. Their engines sure are loud though! I've heard C-172s called skychickens instead of chickenhawks C-150s are one-sh!tys

RE: Low Pass
What's crazy about it? Every plane flys at that altitude above the ground at least twice every flight. The plane wants to pitch up when you're down that low, and that plane in particular is fly-by-wire, so it's as stable as you can get at maintaining a precise altitude.

RE: A question about flaps
I'll try that on my flights today. I really don't see how that could work considering the normal amount of forward pressure required to keep the nose leve while extending flaps is really light, and lasts but a couple seconds. It takes a good amount of time or a lot of force on the elevator to get the nose up to 35*, not to mention the fact that as soon as the speed goes down, the elevator trim would allow the nose to drop on it's own some to maintain speed. I've got a couple flights coming up today, so I should be able to try that out.

Yup, I think there's a balsa model called a Drastic, not sure that's the correct name though. I've seen a few guys build a SPAD version called a spadrastic, search for it on spadworld.net

RE: Bipe snap rolls out of loops???
ORIGINAL: Deano642 I think I will try moving the CG fwd a little to see if that makes a difference. I only mentioned that it snaps out of loops, but it will do it from any attitude with full nose up elevator and slow enough airspeed. Now I know you are probably thinking..."well no dah!" At a slow enough airspeed the wing will stall and depending on a lot of different variables, you may or may not snap roll.
Slow speed truely has nothing to do with stalls. The one, and only requirement to stall is exceeding the critical angle of attack, which can occur in any condition, at any speed, and at any attitude. Moving your CG forward will reduce the elevator's effective authority to some extent, and that'd probably be a good way to solve your snap problem. BTW, use your left thumb more. The difference between a simple stall and a snap is whether or not the plane is coordinated.

RE: A question about flaps
Wait, you had a 172 trimmed for 90Kts. and extended 10* of flaps and it pitched up 35* and stalled? Um, the 172 has a trim change with change in flaps, but I've never experienced anywhere even in the ballpark of 35*, and I've dang sure never had one stall from flap extension, same goes for any of the 8 or so other planes I've flown. My students fail to apply a little forward pressure when they extend flaps all the time, and the plane doesn't even pitch up to the normal climb attitude. I think something was majorly off with your experiment there, but I'm going to try those things out to get my own comparison there.

Putting red RTV silicone works great for locking threads, it adheares to various materials, yet isn't too strong so you can take things apart when you need to. I put it on everything.

Kinna hard to say about weight considering no real specs were given on either plane. It's one of the lightest plane I've had, and by far the fastest. Is the delta in your avatar your own design, ptulmer?

RE: unusual sight
I have had a couple great demonstrations of how hard it is to accurately judge height when not near a structure of a known height. Several months ago, I was out flying R/C planes with my friend Kasey, (he flies both R/C and full-scale like me) out at our spot near a lake. I think Kasey had his Alpha trainer up, we both thought it was *maybe* 500 ft. AGL. About that time, our friend Mark flew over us in a 150. Kasey and I both thought his plane was below Mark. Later on, Mark told us that he was right at 1,000 ft. AGL, and Kasey's plane was dead level with him, and it kinna freaked out his student at first when he saw a plane nearby at his altitude. Another example of how it's hard to judge height comes from a few years ago, Mark and I decided to go mountain climbing. We got to the top, soaked up the view, and got to discussing how high above the surrounding terrain we were. We both agreed that we had to be at least 1,000 ft. up. After I got home, I looked it up on a topo map, found out the peak was just shy of 700ft. Eh, oh well... [:)]

RE: Dual rate trim change
Hmm, never thought it would be that. Everything else seems to work properly, and the trim position on high rate and low rate each time I switch is consistent. Although I know the radio was kept in great condition, it was used often before I purchased it, so I wouldn't be surprised if it needs a little maintenance. Is that a very complicated or expensive process and would I have to send it in to Futaba, or is that something I could easily do myself? TIA

RE: What do you think of the new Boeing?
The 787 is supposed to be more efficient than other planes. I know of a few things that are new about it such as a different wing design, lot more use of composites, and everything is electrically powered instead of using bleed air from the engines for cabin pressurization and ice protection.

Wrapping the engine in paper before storage is also a good idea. The paper would absorb moisture instead of it getting on the metal and rusting.

I guess I haven't posted in this thread. I have a commercial cert. with instrument rating ASEL and AMEL. CFI and CFII ASEL, currently working as an instructor at a Part 141 school. I have about 340 hours total. I guess the most interesting plane I've flown (but couldn't log since I wasn't multi-rated at the time) was a Beech 18.

I have elevator and aileron the same- 1 1/4" of throw in each direction, -50% expo. I haven't messed with dual rates yet, although I probably should as it's very sensitive to control inputs at cruise speed.

RE: The most ridiculous thing you've ever heard from a customer
I used to work in the meat department at a Wal-Mart supercenter. There's been times where I was standing in front of the ground beef case with a cart loaded with more GB and I'm stocking the shelves. Some stupid redneck would walk up close to me, look around for a second, then ask "Where's the ground beef at?" I'd turn to look at them and just point at the shelf and try to keep from busting out laughing. How do you miss four shelves that are twelve feet wide that are right in front of you? I can't count the number of times someone has walked up to me, holding their hands to show the size of some product, never say anything to get my attention so I'm not even sure they are talking to me at first and start with "It's in a red package, about *this* big, I found it here a couple weeks ago." *me after I realize A) this person is talking to me and not someone near me, B) they are asking me a question* 'um, what's it called?' "Oh, I forgot the name." 'well, can you describe it to me?' Then they would make a pathetic attempt to describe whatever it was they were looking for. Another good one is when someone would ask me where an item was that either A) we never carried the whole time I worked there, which was 2 1/2 years, or B) we used to carry it, but it's been at least 6 months ago when we stopped carrying it, and they would say "I just got it here (points to some shelf or freezer) last week" 'I haven't seen that here in about a year, are you sure you were in this store? Different stores carry different items' "Yes, I was here, I found it right here" That always made me wonder about these people because I knew that item wasn't where they were claiming it was for a very long time if ever. A few different times something would screw up somewhere along the supply chain so we would go a few days without getting any say pork in for a few days. So after a while, the pork section would be nothing but an empty shelf when every other section in my department was fully stocked. All day long I would have people walk up to me and ask if I had any more porkchops in the back. I'm thinking "Yup, we got more in the back, just decided to not stock the pork today despite keeping everything else stocked completely." Even the managers would ask that. Course after having a fellow associate take some initiative and do some cleaning on a day that was extremely slow, then have three managers come by and gripe at him for cleaning instead of watching the shelves, then a few days later when he was just standing there facing the shelves and scribling on a piece of paper and have some of the same managers come by and tell him he's doing a great job, I began having some serious doubts about the intelligence of Wal-Mart managers.

It's a flat wing. There's one sheet of coro with the flutes running front to back glued on top of another sheet with the flutes running left to right. It just doesn't get any easier than this building a fast plane
