RE: Postal Plane Project
Yeah, this does really suck. When I signed up, I was hoping to get a chance to fly GRACE before it got too cold - last year. Now I'm wondering if I'll see her this year. Hindsight being 20/20, if I were to organize something like this, I'd need a current phone number of everyone who wanted to play along. That way there'd be no excuse of not checking the board, and it'd be alot easier to nag someone who was keeping her more than a week. SDG666, did you ever receive GRACE?

RE: What is my responsibility?
I'd actually like to hear the fully story here. You've only sold two items in the MarketPlace, Flyathome. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out what item you are talking about. So, was there more time on the engine than he stated? Maybe he was honestly mistaken and didn't purposefully misrepresent the engine? Or, maybe he did purposefully misrepresent it, in which case I'd rather not deal with him - ever. I think your responsibility is to confront him and get the truth about the whole situation. He's already sold the engine, so the point is moot. But, I would like to hear his side of the story before making my judgement.

Gyro with a Heli Head?
I went through a brief helicopter phase. I bought a Kyosho Caliber 30 and learned how to fly on it. But, I never enjoyed it. I was always way too nervous to have fun. I crashed it several times and got sick of the large repair bills that came with each repair. After the last crash, I shelved it. I've since stripped all the radio gear and converted the engine to aircraft use. But, the blades and swashplate are still fine. I'm thinking about experimenting with gyros again and was wondering if my heli could be used. when a heli does a autorotation landing, it's just a gyro-glider. So, why not strap an engine to the front tilt the mast back and make it into a gyrocopter? I'm thinking I could put the collective pitch on ch 7 so I could control it with a knob. Set alot of negative pitch for the blade to get up to speed, a little less to get into the air. Then, I'd use the swash plate for roll and pitch axis. Slap on a rudder for yaw and ground handling and I've got a gyrocopter. What am I missing here? Has this been done before?

I checked spad to the bone the the stick they have on there calls for a 32cc to 50cc, and I don't want it to be sluggish from lack of power, I really want it to scream. Jesse
Sorry, to burst your bubble. But, a 25cc weed eater is not going to scream. The engine is going to be heavy for the amount of power it has. You can make a 25cc weedie fly: see HERE for my solution. But, you'll be hard pressed to make it a screamer.

RE: Biplane
I would go with two servos and I would probably put them both in the bottom wing. I'm guessing your rcvr and elevator, aileron, and throttle servos will all be in the long fuse. I think it'd be easier to hook up the bottom wing to the rcvr than the top. Just my $.02. Also, have you seen how the Demon wing is attached? I would use that methon to attach the bottom wing. Cutting a wing saddle out of gutterpipe is not an easy thing to do, and it severly weakens the fuse. Other than that, looks like a great idea. I'll be watching this one develop.

Or, just maybe, do you think there might be a reason for that? I honestly don't care if you hurt yourself. You are being deliberately careless despite being warned. What I do care about is if your hub flys apart and hurts some innocent bystander. If you do insist on learning this lesson the hard way, please do not run that engine with a prop on it within 1000' of any other living thing.

RE: how to...weedwacker
Wow. Just wow. It seems your mind is made up to use a plastic prop hub. What you are attempting to do is just plain stupid. You've been warned. Just because the plastic pipe didn't fly apart means absolutely nothing. It is only supporting it's own weight and rotational inertia. Adding a prop will more than double the weight and inertia - not to mention the gyroscopic forces. But, if you do insist on using PVC pipe, please put 911 on the speed dial and be sure to take a video.

RE: Twin rotor Gyro idea
Good to hear that the twin articulated head design works. After doing a bit more research, I've decided to start a bit simpler. I'm going with a 3 bladed DC head design on a tractor fuselage. I'll see if that takes care of the stability issues I had with the Kombat Kopter. I've finished the rotors and head. I've go alot of projects around the house, so progress is slow. Thanks for the invite to Morris. If I've got a flying Gyro in Sept, I'll have to make the trip.
ORIGINAL: deadcell Well we can forget the Stihl. I got to looking at it and according to the way the starter rope pulled to get it started. The stupid thing runs the wrong direction for a puller plane motor. Dang, that would have been cool to go to the field and reached down and pull started your plane to get it going. Sorta like a tiny real ultralight. Thanks
Well you don't have to completely forget it. Is it a chainsaw engine? If so, it likely has the shaft coming out both sides of the crankcase. If that's the case, mount the prop to the other side. If that's not the case, just buy a pusher prop for it. That'll turn it into a regular 'puller plane motor'.

Why the heavy servo load? Or rather, why would the servo load be any heavier than with a single rotor DC head? I can't access Youtube at work, but I'll have to check that out when I get home. Thanks for the tip!

Twin rotor Gyro idea
I had a Kombat Kopter a couple of years ago and managed to fly it with varying degrees of success. It had some issues that caused me to eventually dismantle it and give up on gyros for the time. It was a single rotor and had the issue of asymmetrical lift at low rotor speeds - which made ROG takeoff nearly impossible. It also did not have fore/aft tilt on the rotor which would have helped get the rotor up to speed quicker. This also caused the craft to pitch up - nearly uncontrollably when turning from downwind to upwind. A DC head would take care of the pitching issue and would probably help ROG abilities, but I'd still have the asymmetrical lift issue. So, I was think of going with a twin rotor setup - but I still wanted DC heads on both. Then it dawned on me that I may be able to build this craft without side/side control on the rotors. Instead, I'll have fore/aft control on both rotors - each controlled by their own servo. Then, I would mix them like elevons. Pulling back would tilt both rotors back. Right stick would tilt the right rotor back and the left rotor forward. Left stick would be the opposite. Any reason why this wouldn't work? AFAIK, this hasn't been tried before. I've done some searching, but came up with nothing.

RE: aerial rocket launching
While it may not be illegal, it is a bad idea. If you insist on doing this, please go somewhere isolated. The last thing this hobby needs is the wrong person seeing a model shooting off rockets and jumping to conclusions. With the terrorism issues what they are, people may start seeing our aircraft as potential weapons which would lead to all sorts of red tape and likely lead to expensive and limiting licensing procedures to be able to fly. My reccomendation would be to simply not persue this.

Our club is setup on a landfill. HERE are the construction pictures. We found out after putting in the runway that the City would not let us fly over one building - because of explosion danger if a plane were to crash into it. We ended up moving our runway to avoid this building. You should probably find out where there are (if any) no fly zones before you build your runway. Other than that one problem, we have a great site with lots of room to fly. And since the land really can't be used for anything else, we have reasonable assurace that we will keep this site for quite awhile.
