RE: FPV for Search & Rescue mission
Your standard radio will already exceed your line of sight range. But, if you are asking how to autonomously fly a plane via GPS beyond line of sight, you are treading on very dangerous ground. As a person who enjoys this hobby, that's not information I'd share and hope that anyone else would do the same. What you are asking could potentially turn an RC plane into a weapon. And even if that is not your intention - posting that kind of information on a public message board would allow anyone access to that info. Nope, won't touch this subject with a 10' pole.

No videos of this fabled first spad jet? Everyone knows you can't trust those Canadians. What, with their beady eyes and flapping heads! At least we can call it the first American Spad Jet.

RE: 2012 SPAD Pylon racing schedule
Did you know that there is a SPAD designed as a .25 sized pylon racer? Everything you need to know - as well as the build up to the SPADFest races last year can be found HERE Nothing wrong with using a DPS as a racer, though. They're great all around planes. But, I like the club racer better for pylons. Glad to see the SPAD activity out there in Idaho. Too bad you guys are so far from IA - there'll be some SPAD pylon racing in June.
ORIGINAL: bw5493 Man, we have had 6 in the air at a time and that was a hoot, I can only imagine 20!!! Awesome. I'll have to look out for the next SPADFest date and location.
That does look like a good time. We had SPAD pylon racing this past SPADFest. Only ran heats of 4, though. It'd be a heck of a drive for you if you came this year. It's in Newton IA. People have come from farther - but they usually fly in and ship their planes. http://spadworld.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18400

RE: All the 2mm and 4mm coroplast you want. any color
ORIGINAL: ratshooter Hello Villa, thats the sort of info I am looking for. I thought the wing would fold better for the airfoil if the splines went with the span instead of the chord. Thats why I ask. I had it wrong I guess. Anyway I am going to do some reading and then order the coroplast. It does look like the splines are going spanwise on the spadworld photos though. Spadworld calls their 52'' trainer an ARF. Is the wind already glued together? I like the idea of doing the gluing so I can get these figured out. Simple planes like this are right up my alley.
It really depends on what kind of wing you are building. The most popular is the RNAF which has the top skin of the wing orientated with the flutes chrodwise and the bottom layer with the flutes spanwise. It will fold easier with the top skin flutes going spanwise - but you end up with a triangular airfoil, which doesn't stall very nicely.

RE: how do I launch my Draco
ORIGINAL: Clean Stand sideways to the wind, Hold the transmitter in one hand and a wingtip in the other with the far tip on the ground. Run the throttle up drag the wingtip up and rotate into the wind and with the wing level, let go of the wingtip and fly away.
Ahh the wingtip toss. You can see it done to perfection by an extremely talented - not to mention good looking - RC pilot if you click HERE The launch happens at about the 0:35 mark. That plane is a .15 powered HOR. If you have a more powerful engine on the nose, it may be a good idea to put the opposite wingtip in the grass like Clean suggests while the engine winds up. Then, you can slide the wing out of the grass and throw it. Just be sure the wings are mostly level before letting go.

RE: New & unusual
It's an interesting design, but doing something just cause it'd difficult to do is not really a good approach to aircraft design. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see any advantage to putting the props between the engine and cockpit. But, I see many many disadvantages.

RE: Maloney gasoline Engine
If it's brand new, you might be able to get a collector to buy it. But, as an airplane engine, it's pretty much worthless. Low power, high weight, and unreliable. Also, you'd probably get more response by asking this question in the Gas Engine section of RCU.

RE: Flew my spad gnat today!
Maybe too little too late, but I've flown a Gnat. They are a blast - especially for SSC combat - when properly set up. Where did you have your CG? What kind of throws? I'm surprised yours wouldn't loop - mine would loop tight enough to cut it's own streamer string. Not even the streamer itself - but the short 10' piece of string connecting it to the streamer. Have a look at this one if you want to see how they can fly when properly set up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMlXO2Wm0f4 Yeah, you're not going to get much of a glide out of it. But, if it "came down like a rock" you should move your cg back. Here's a little SSC with the GNat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oc2NLma2ug

RE: Spadsticks
They look great. I vote we need video of a flyby too! I do have a question though. Why did you glue the top wing skin to the top of the bottom wing skin at the LE? If you glue the top skin to the bottom of the bottom skin, you won't have that flat edge of 4 mil coro facing the wind. Probably doesn't make any difference flying- wise. I've just never seen it done that way.

RE: RC elec Rockets
The torque of the motor would help with stability. The rocket would spin just like a rifle bullet. You shouldn't need any servos or gyros for stability, as long as you have a tall enough guide rod to ensure your rocket was going straight up for long enough to build up enough speed for the fins to keep it going straight. What is your intention with this? For it to go up and deploy a chute like a solid fuel rocket? Or, something else?

RE: SCREAMIN' DEMON DOES 202 MPH!!!
ORIGINAL: combatpigg I think a neat idea for a future SD thread would be to see how much speed could be got from a TT .45 with ordinary tools that most modelers have or could easily afford. What do you think a realistic MPH goal would be?
We've been doing something similar every year at SPADfest. We have a speed competition with a kind of gentleman's agreement that no high dollar engines are entered. I won the last one with a TT.46 spinning a 9X7.5 on a delta of my own design. My best pass (with a tailwind) was 141MPH. I think my average was in the 120's. Side track aside - that is freaking amazing! 200+ on a plane that small has to be nerve racking. Nice flying! That sucker was screamin. I'll run it through WOS myself if you don't mind - but it sure sounded like over 200.

RE: Postal Plane Project
Yeah, this does really suck. When I signed up, I was hoping to get a chance to fly GRACE before it got too cold - last year. Now I'm wondering if I'll see her this year. Hindsight being 20/20, if I were to organize something like this, I'd need a current phone number of everyone who wanted to play along. That way there'd be no excuse of not checking the board, and it'd be alot easier to nag someone who was keeping her more than a week. SDG666, did you ever receive GRACE?

RE: What is my responsibility?
I'd actually like to hear the fully story here. You've only sold two items in the MarketPlace, Flyathome. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out what item you are talking about. So, was there more time on the engine than he stated? Maybe he was honestly mistaken and didn't purposefully misrepresent the engine? Or, maybe he did purposefully misrepresent it, in which case I'd rather not deal with him - ever. I think your responsibility is to confront him and get the truth about the whole situation. He's already sold the engine, so the point is moot. But, I would like to hear his side of the story before making my judgement.

Gyro with a Heli Head?
I went through a brief helicopter phase. I bought a Kyosho Caliber 30 and learned how to fly on it. But, I never enjoyed it. I was always way too nervous to have fun. I crashed it several times and got sick of the large repair bills that came with each repair. After the last crash, I shelved it. I've since stripped all the radio gear and converted the engine to aircraft use. But, the blades and swashplate are still fine. I'm thinking about experimenting with gyros again and was wondering if my heli could be used. when a heli does a autorotation landing, it's just a gyro-glider. So, why not strap an engine to the front tilt the mast back and make it into a gyrocopter? I'm thinking I could put the collective pitch on ch 7 so I could control it with a knob. Set alot of negative pitch for the blade to get up to speed, a little less to get into the air. Then, I'd use the swash plate for roll and pitch axis. Slap on a rudder for yaw and ground handling and I've got a gyrocopter. What am I missing here? Has this been done before?
