RE: Who has a 3D printer?...
These are the type of materials i am talking about. [link=http://production3dprinters.com/materials/sls]Mats[/link] For these you need an industrial system. As I say, currently home printers are OK for what they are, good for toys and models used during development and concept stages, but if you want something functional ( a real part to be used for a long time) , that needs to take working loads, is UV stable, has a wide temperature range and of high accuracy, you have to go to another level. I personally have been involved with this in both, usage and development of technology for 15+ years, it’s great, the future of manufacturing as far as I am concerned. I lecture on the subject for Universities from time to time but my main use of the technology is in rapid manufacturing, supplying Aerospace, Automotive, Military, Formulae one (for on car parts), medical, Oil and Pneumatic systems and of course R and D for all applications. I think the sudden public awareness of this technology is great, but it has been around for a long time, original SLA technology has been with us for 25 years! I can see the day in maybe 10 years when home systems will be at a high level. But currently, to use AM technology (Additive Manufacturing) to its highest level you need a controlled environment with a powerful laser (some new systems are running up to 400 watts). Additional gas supplies of Nitrogen or Argon are also required to purge the build chamber. Temperatures within the chamber reach up to 180 Celsius on plastics and much higher on metals. All of which prevent the currents high level systems being used at home. Paul G

RE: Who has a 3D printer?...
The 2k printers are no more than a novelty. The sls machine I am talking about is around 250k The 3d printer uses Fused Deposition Modelling (fdm) A 2k unit has poor definition and thick layers. The industrial equivalent is 120k building parts up to 400 mm cube. Layer thickness around 0.1 mm Chalk and cheese!
ORIGINAL: Jgwright Mark Might be worth trying Paul Gray. I think he has one at his work. John
Mark I may be able to point you in the right direction, I have access to FDM, (ABS and Polycarbonate) SLA and SLS (steel, Nylon, GF Nylon, Rubber and EX nylon).I believe in this application (from the sounds of it) SLS would be the best option. Most of the ‘home’ 3D printers are not worth a light, the ones I am talking about are industrial, I have been involved in this technology for over 15 years. I would need to see the problem; do you have a 3D CAD drawing? An STL file? Contact me for further discussions. Paul G

Tragic loss of a brave crew . My condolences to the families of those who died. From my own point of view it looks like a rearward CG to me, classic ‘wobble’ as the stall becomes dominant followed by a drop of a wing. I am sure the investigators will find the cause. Very upsetting to watch. [&o] Paul G

Just for interest. This picture was taken the other day. The model is the same one as the original picture (post 1). The young girl ( Teresa) is also the same one, she is now 18 years old. All doing well and model still flying on the original Wren 44 manual start (with a wand). Turbine has never been back to Wren. [X(] PG

RE: Pressure tap for Turbax1 ducted fan unit
I always ran fan pressure, much more reliable than pipe pressure, easier to set the engine up. Never had a single issue with it, had lots with pipe! Pipe pressure is too high at full throttle, but when you throttle back, it drops off quickly, makes it more difficult to set the engine up. Also if the seal blows on the tuned pipe you lose pressure, with a fan, as long as the engine is running you get pressure. If you cannot get the correct fitting then use a model boat water cooling scoop/pickup. They can be fitted and work very well. Paul G

Amazing! The thread is back! My friend whose L39 is pictured with mine on the first post, is still flying his L39 with the original Wren 44 manual start! The motor is a reliable as ever and has never been back to Wren. I have another friend who recently brought one and is flying it regularly ( I get a fly now and again) [:D] I still love this combination, without a doubt one of the best out there. [8D] Paul G

What a great weekend! Considering the crap weather we have had this year, we were blessed! Lots of flying, great banter and great to see old friends again. RE: 3D printed scale parts for jets
Got one, had it for about 1 year, works well, we use Polycarbonate and ABS. For production and prototypes. But, like all FDM it is weak in one plane due to the 'strata' of construction, which is why SLS give a better, stronger part. It still has strata but because the layers melt together the bond is very strong. There is some 'post processing' that can be done to FDM ABS which helps with the strength. I am not saying it weak, it just will not take heavy loads in one direction. I have used SLS with glass filled nylon in very high load conditions, i can drill and tap it with an M6 thread and hang off the bolt. This, does of course depend on the design, but if you design for process, (just as you do with a mill or a lathe) then the technology is sound.

Prices are better, but still high. STP files (STEP) have to be processed through a CAD package that can output STL files. PG

RE: 3D printed scale parts for jets
Type of file is generally STL output from a 3D CAD file (Standard Triangle Language). Many types of technology are available. FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) type used by Stratasys SLA (Stereo Lithographic Apparatus) uses a liquid resin that changes state when lasered (go to a solid from a fluid) SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) uses powers of different varieties which are selectively lasers and melted to a solid. These powders can be steel, Nylon, Glass filled Nylon, Carbon filled nylons and a rubber emulator. The Objet uses a UV cure resin. I have 14 years experience with this technology and access to all of the above, using it every day for prototypes and manufacture of production pieces. The High res. FDM produces good parts in Polycarbonate and ABS, both can be used in a production environment as long as the design takes into consideration the limitations of the strength in one plane. The build envelope is 400mmx400x400 so large pieces can be produced. For me SLS is the process of choice, producing strong high res parts in materials that are strong and usable. One of my biggest customers is F1 Teams which include Red Bull, and Mercedes GP. The parts are used on the cars in real stress locations. The problem, as has been highlighted is that the cost per piece can be high; this limits its market in a commercial world. I am currently reviewing DMS, Direct Metal Sintering, which will enable direct manufacture of parts in SS, Cobalt Chrome, Titanium, aluminium and many other metals. All i need is the £750,000 to get it set up! Paul G
