RE: RClander T33 for 90 or 120mm edf
Thanks guys! I could relax and just watch it go with Team Futaba's Devin McGrath on the sticks. I'm always surprised that there are not more EDFs in the noontime demos. I'll post some photos and video of the T-33 at NEAT soon...

RE: Turnigy H.A.L. (Heavy Aerial Lift)
Here are a few options for the Turnigy H.A.L. landing gear. The first two photos show the optional Turnigy gear if you are not planning to have a payload like a camera or gimbal. The middle photo is using the stock gear, which seemed surprisingly nice! The last two photos are my DJI F550 Landing Gear Set with the $50 damping pivot camera mount. I plan to use a 4s 5AH LiPo pack to offset the camera and FPV setup. The aluminum bars slide to achieve a perfect balance between camera gear and Lipo pack.

RE: Turnigy H.A.L. (Heavy Aerial Lift)
I started working on the H.A.L. again now that my ST450 project seems to be working fine. It was a good first quad to learn on. I mounted my HK Power Distribution board to the top of the H.A.L. inverted. This allowed the main power cable to run underneath and the foam bottom to be on top. My KK2 LCD board was first mounted in Chris Moon's protective Delrin case and then on top of the Power Distribution board. I added a layer of foam to the bottom of the KK2 case using double-side carpet tape. the square foam piece was pulled off of the original KK2 shipping container. My Castle Creations Phoenix-25 ESC motor wires were lengthened 11" before running them through the H.A.L. arm tubes. Note that the latest firmware for the Phoenix and ICE series ESCs comes with a new "Multirotor" mode setting. Although I don't see anything wrong with using the stock H.A.L. landing gear, I acquired a DJI F550 Landing Gear Set from [link=http://www.aeroxcraft.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13&products_id=20]AeroXcraft[/link] so I will be using that instead.

RE: Turnigy H.A.L. (Heavy Aerial Lift)
It looks like I had the assembly wrong on the H.A.L. motors. I did my original motor assembly based upon the recessed holes for the flat head screws. The NTM Prop Drive Series Motors reverses things due to the nicely machines prop adapter that comes in the accessory pack. Here is the correct assembly using the optional no-payload landing gear. It is much cleaner! I need to use my own M3x6 screws to mount the motor from the other side. The rest of the hardware comes with either the H.A.L. or the optional landing gear set. Although I am using the DJI F550 Landing Gear Set (shown above) I think I will keep the optional H.A.L. gear set installed to protect the motor in case of a hard crash. The machining of both the H.A.L. and the optional gear set are excellent!

RE: ST450 Quad
Here are a few flying photos of my ST450 "Erector Set" Quad. Even with the arms bent in slightly different directions, the KK1 board with v4.7 firmware keeps it quite stable. The ST450 just has too much hardware to come loose and the arms can be bent out of alignment. I expect my replacement Flamewheel 450 clone to have much less maintenance. RE: ST450 Quad
I achieved my first quad hover yesterday (other than the self-hovering AR.Drone) so it was pretty exciting. The learning curve was challenging but my kind of fun! I did manage to bust 3 props while performing the dreaded "flips of death" before I got my gyro rotation figured out.. Here is some good setup information for prop direction, gyro rotation, and effect of transmitter stick control. It is an older article using the original KK board firmware, not the v4.7 that I have. [link=http://www.rcexplorer.se/page14/kkguide/kkguide/quadx.html]KK-Quad X setup guide[/link] On my new v4.7 firmware, I now realize that the functions of the pots has changed, the direction of max and min on the pots, and the motor positions of M1-M4. LOL! Once I got this information figured out, I finally got my gyro rotation corrected and the erector set was hovering in my backyard. I'll post some photos and a video before moving on to my Turnigy H.A.L. [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11184802/tm.htm]project[/link]. The newer KK2.0 board with the LCD screen at HK is superior to the older one I used on the ST450 Quad. The original KK gyro system has been updated to an more sensitive dual chip 3-axis gyro and single chip 3-axis accelerometer system making this the most stable KK board ever and allowing for the addition of an Auto-level function. A great deal of performance for only $30! I would also recommend using this $11 Q450 "Flamewheel" [link=http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__24172__Q450_Glass_Fiber_Quadcopter_Frame_450mm.html]clone[/link] (first photo) because it weighs the same as the ST450 but costs much less and has much less hardware to fly off during flight. The solid nylon arms are perfect for a first quad project. I bought two of them and will swap my components over from the ST450 this Fall or Winter. If you don't have a power distribution board, there is also a version with Integrated PCB built-in for only [link=http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__24173__Q450_Glass_Fiber_Quadcopter_Frame_450mm_Integrated_PCB_Version.html]$18[/link]. RE: ST450 Quad
My flying erector set is ready to test. I'm using GemFan 10x4.7 props. My 3s 3200mAh pack is simply held in place by two rubber bands. I'm using an older pack until my new Turnigy pack arrives. I did find out one interesting change when using the newer v4.7 firmware. The pot settings for calibration are reversed so that you turn them full CW instead of CCW to calibrate various settings. The information on this starts on post [link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1458663&page=5]73[/link] of the long KK Multikopter thread on RCG.

ST450 Quad
Hi, My first quad build will be the ST450 quad in an "X" configuration. This will be a rugged test quad with no real lifting goals. I simply want to learn about the KK2 controller board and it flight stability capability. The frame reminded me of my old erector set when I was a kid. Fortunately, the ST450 doesn't have any of the sharp edges that my erector set had.

Of course, I had to try these as well. :) The [link=http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110896596159&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:US:3160]VGE High Performance Propellers[/link] propellers have been specially designed for the AR.Drone 1.0 & 2.0 by a team who won the French Army micro drone contest. They are made to optimize power consumption and thrust. The blades are made of composite plastic material which is stiffer than the stock AR.Drone blades. The [link=http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110899964379&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:US:3160]VGE Drive Gear Bearing Upgrade[/link] is a direct replacement for the AR.Drone 1.0 & 2.0. The stock AR.Drone comes with 8 brass bushings (2 on each gear shaft). By replacing your bushings with this bearing set you will increase battery time and brushless motor life (x4). This conversion will allow your AR.Drone to operate more efficiently. The conversion is very simple and takes around 5 minutes to complete.

The damping pivot can move in two axes and is designed for a camera gimbal without stabilizer/servo control in mind. (like Aerial Video) It includes a special mechanism filled with damping oil inside that can also play the role of a damper. At only $49.95 for some pretty nice craftmanship, I couldn't resist trying one of these out myself. The thread also has some nice videos of the H.A.L. being tested for both flight stability and camera stability.

RE: Turnigy H.A.L. (Heavy Aerial Lift)
I'll be using the following base equipment to get it flying. You need both CW and CCW rotation props, two of each. I'm not sure if I will prefer the 9x4.7 or 10x4.5 props so I bought 2 sets of each rotation in black and green colors. The green props will go on the front of my Quad set up in the "X" configuration. The NTM Prop Drive 35 Series Accessory Pack has a mating adapter with a 6mm shaft that mates with the GemFan 9x4.7 props without drilling. The props have a 6mm hole drilled in the front side of the hub, and an 8mm hole on the back side of the hub to accept a prop shaft adapter ring. Also included with the [link=http://www.innov8tivedesigns.com/product_info.php?cPath=46_132&products_id=975]GemFan[/link] props is a set of four 8mm OD adapter rings that step down the center hole of the prop to allow it fit on 3mm, 4mm, 5mm or 6mm motor shafts. The Castle Creations Phoenix and ICE series of ESCs have a fast slew rate to work well with Quads. Do not use the lower cost Thunderbird series of ESCs because the slew rate is to slow for good Quad stability and performance. Other lower cost ESCs may have similar performance degredation. For only $32, it seemed like an awesome value with excellent quality parts. In fact, it is so inexpensive that you can buy a second frame for spares! Although the photo shows the H.A.L. in a "+" configuration, it can also be set up as an "X" configuration. I plan to use the "X" configuration since this is not a problem for the KK2 controller board and it keeps the front open for the camera. The two forward props can then be a different color to aid in orientation. We took a few photos of my pilot chillin' with a Pepsi before the flight. Unfortunately, we never got of the ground due to a spin-out that broke the tail stick. We think one of the wheels was still bent out from a previous rough landing due to the ESC cutting out. I have since replaced the ESC. Another issue may be that the pilot is blanking the rudder authority so we will attempt it again in a few weeks with the pilot removed first. My three cylinders are almost complete. The bottom two just need the valves added.

RE: 4 fans
Typically, the only time you want to use multiple DFs is to keep it scale. There are exceptions where you can use two DFs and still keep things scale. An example is using a DF on each air intake and then "Y" couple them together in a single exhaust. In this manner, the two DFs add together for a greater combined output.

RE: Parrot AR.Drone 2.0
I haven't tried the height lock as I am experimenting now on distance options. A few companies are now making standard R/C transmitters for the AR.Drone and one even has a Spektrum Bind-n-Fly product. The target market for the AR.Drone is really the gaming industry, not the R/C hobby. It does, however, offer some interesting technology for only $300. The improved camera resolution combined with a 7" or 10" tablet makes a relatively low cost but highly integrated FPV setup. I tested my Belkin Range Extender today at a school yard today but the wind kept me from going too high. It was cool to fly around the field using the Absolute Control mode and watch the AR.Drone tilt itself into the wind to stay hovering in one place. The Belkin Range Extender runs on 12v at about a 200mAh draw so my 3-cell 5AH LiPo pack easily powered it for the hour I was testing. I just set it up in the middle of the large field and fly just about anywhere. You can see my review of the first AR.Drone model [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=1287]here[/link]. I think the 2.0 model has better control stability.

I took a few photos and some video while I was testing my AR.Drone inside and outside. It seems very stabile (although my piloting with a tablet needs some work) and the built-in HD camera works very well. When I had the drone up over my house in the video, you can see the camera compensate for the light once I stopped moving it around. The flip feature is pretty cool and you can see it several times during the video.
