Great Lakes Biplane Kit???
Does anyone know if someone is making a kit of the Great Lakes Biplane? Ideally I'm looking for something large enough to be powered by a small gas engine; maybe 1/4 scale.

Zenoah G-38 needle valve adjustment
I have a used Zenoah G-38 that I bought. It hadn't been run in about 5 years, so I bought a carb rebuild kit and rebuilt the carb. I opened both needle valves 1.5 turns and then started the engine. It ran very rich. The more I closed the high speed needle, the better it ran, until I had the high speed needle completely closed. The idle needle is still 1.5 turns open. It seems to run great and have good throttle response. I suppose I could just run the engine like this, but I'd rather figure out what is wrong. I don't see anything obvious with the carb, but I'm sure I'm missing something. Can anyone offer any suggestions.

RE: Equipment needed to do a formation charge on 12V lead acid batteries
I'm working with someone who has a startup battery company. I've been asked to come up with the data acquisition and charging/discharge equipment. I'm not a battery chemist, so I can't explain why this formation charging scheme is required. This is only required for the initual charge. After this initual charge, the battery can be charged normally. Greg

Servos for 1/3 scale Sig Spacewalker?
I'm putting finishing touches on a 1/3 scale Sig Spacewalker. The plane has a 104" wingspan and weights around 20 lbs and is powered by a Zenoah G-38. Anyone have suggestions on servos? I was thinking about using the following servos: Hitec HS-475HB (61 oz-in torque) on each ailron Hitec HS-645MG (107 oz-in torque) on the rudder Hitec HS-645MG (107 oz-in torque) on the elevator (one servo for the entire elevator) Will these servos be sufficient? Thanks, Greg

RE: Regular Epoxy vs Finish Cure Epoxy?
Thanks for the feedback guys. I did a little experiment and the 20 minute finish cure epoxy was stronger than the two 1/8" ply pieces I glued together. I also asked Bob Smith industries (the manufacturer of the epoxy) and here's what they had to say. "Finish-Cure is not as strong as our Slow-Cure 30 minute. Finish-Cure is formulated to be easier to brush on for applying fiberglass cloth, fuel proofing engine and fuel tank areas and laminating larger pieces together. It is also easier to sand. The Slow-Cure is what you really want for the high stress areas." Greg

Regular Epoxy vs Finish Cure Epoxy?
I purchased some 20-minute epoxy intended to be used on high strength areas (firewall, wing spars, etc.) of a 1/3 scale Sig Spacewalker. After I opened the bottles, I noticed I purchased "Finish Cure epoxy" instead of regular slow setting epoxy. How does the strength of this finish cure epoxy compare to regular old 30-minute epoxy. It looks like the finish cure epoxy is less viscous.

RE: Scale Engine for 1/3 Sig Spacewalker
Another option is to order the optional scale engine kit from Balsa USA for their 1/3 scale cub. It is ABS plastic and included the cylinders, valve covers, and eyebrow cooling shroud.

RE: Pinholes in Stits covering
I have also had the same problem. I used a rag saturated with MEK and smoothed out the pinholes. I then sprayed on another coat. The second coat went on with no problem. The next time I think I would wipe down the bare poly fiber fabric with MEK before I sprayed anything on it. I wondered if there was something on the surface of the fabric causing the problem, like oils from my hands. Greg

Current draw of 550 size motor???
I am finishing construction of a Great Planes Spectra glider. The kit came with a 550 size cobalt motor, which uses an 8X4 prop. The kit uses a microswitch to turn the motor on and off. I would like to install an ESC in place of the microswitch. I'm trying to determine how much current the motor will draw so I know how large an ESC to purchase. Does anyone know how much current the motor will draw? The motor is rated for 7.2 - 8.4 volts. If I use a LiPo battery, do you think the motor will be able to handle a 3 cell LiPo pack, or should I use a 2 cell pack? Thanks, Greg

Balsa USA 1/3 scale cub question
I have completed construction of a 1/3 scale Balsa USA cub. The method of wing mounting depends on the wing struts for support. If the wing struts, or mounting points were to fail, the wing would most certainly fold up in flight. It seems that the point where the struts attach to the landing gear strap is not very beefy. I am concerned about a failure of the landing gear strap where the two holes are drilled. (See picture to get an idea of the area I am talking about) I already had a failure of a metal bracket holding the tail struts. This bracket failed by just running the engine on the ground. Apparently, vibrations from the G-62 engine caused the metal to fatigue. (I have also attached a picture of this) If anyone has experience with this particular plane, I would be interested in any deviations they have made from plans to beef up these areas. Thanks Greg

Slow Stick with giant wing from Stevens Aero
While I was at the Toledo trade show over the weekend, I picked up a 55" wing kit for a slow stick. The wing is sold through Stevens Aero. I have the wing built, and was wondering if anyone else has tried one of these wings. They claim you can thermal a slow stick with the wing. The wing is standard balsa construction and was a pleasure to build. Once I started building, I didn't stop until I was completely finished. Greg

RE: Zenoah G62 or Fuji/Imvac BT64 EI ?
I would go with the G-62 with a magnito ignition. I have two G-62's, one with the stock ignition and spring starter, and one that was converted to EI by RCIgnitions. I like the converted G-62 better, but I choose to put the stock engine on my Balsa USA 1/3 scale cub simply because I felt it was more relaible. There is nothing wrong with the reliability of the converted engines, there is just a few more things that can go wrong, and it looks like you are more interested in reliability. The cub balances nicely with the heavier engine on it anyway. I would have had to add a bunch of nose weight if I used the converted engine. Greg

RE: Who makes G-62 wrap-around muffler
The slimline wrap around muffler is plenty quiet for my application. It meets our clubs noise requirements (86db @ 25'), where a stock muffler on a G62 will not meet the noise requirements. The engine/muffler will be used on a 1/3 scale cub, and I don't need every last once of performance from the engine, so if I loose a few hunderd RPM, that's OK. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions, Greg

Anyone know who makes/sells wraparound mufflers for a Zenoah G62? I'm looking for another one similar to the one shown in the attached picture. I thought there was a couple of individuals making these, but I searched and came up empty. Thanks, Greg

F&M enterprises sells pinking tape that is much better than the stuff from Balsa USA. I attempted to use the Balsa USA stuff on my 1/3 scale cub, but had the same problems you described. I then got the tapes from F&M, and had much better results. Greg

Brushless motor suggestions please
I am building a small indoor biplane from plans I found in a model magazine, and would like to power it with a brushless motor and li-po battery. The flying weight of the plane is listed at 8 oz, and it has 485 sq in of wing area. The plane is semi-scale, and I plane on flying it in a scale manor, so I don't need the power to do aerobatics. The plans call for a GWS IPS-DS2BB motor and gear drive with a GWS 9X7 prop and a 7 cell 190mAh NiCad battery. I would like to use a brushless motor, preferably without a gearbox, and li-po battery. Any suggestions. Thanks, Greg

RE: best oil mix for G26
I am not going to comment on the oil to use, but as far as the shut off switch, this is what I like to do. I use a radio shack switch 275-016. This is similar to a limit switch. I mount it on the firewall, then run a nylon pushrod from a servo in the fuse, to the switch. When the servo is activated, it can push the switch closed shutting off the ignition. Also, with that type of switch, you can manually close it. So with one switch, you can shut off the engine with a servo, or by manually pushing the switch. Greg

Looking for suggestions
I have been flying glow and gas for 6 years, and would like to try my hand at a glider for this winter's building project. I started looking and there are sooooooo many choices out there. I am looking for something in the 2-meter range, that is powered by an electric motor. I like the idea of a brushless motor, and li-po batteries. I don't care if the glider is an ARF, or a kit, but cost will be a determining factor. I am looking for something that thermals well and fly's slow. I don't care to do aerobatics. I just want to be able to sit in my lawn chair on a relaxing lazy Sunday afternoon and spend an hour or so in the sky catching thermals. Suggestions??? Thanks, Greg

RE: Registration Numbers
Thanks for the info everyone. Hopefully we can just contact the owner of the plane and resolve the problem. We'd rather not get him in trouble with the authorities, if we don't have to. Greg

Registration Numbers
We have a full scale Cessna 150 or 152 regularly making very low passes over our R/C flying field. We are certain he is violating the 500'AGL limit. We would like to contact him and ask him to stop making low passes over our field. If that doesn't work, we will then go to the FAA. We have his N-number, and were wondering if there was a way to track down an aircraft owner, if we have a registration number. Greg

Balsa USA 1/3 scale flybaby plans
I am considering building a 1/3 scale flybaby. I want to build the single wing version of the plane, as opposed to the biplane. Balsa USA still sells plans of the 1/3 scale flybaby, but the kit has been discontinued for many years. Balsa USA makes the statement: "Our kit plans are not recommended for scratch building. These plans were made to accompany our kits and should be used as spares or for kit building only." My question to those of you familar with the plans for this plane: Do the plans contain enough information to construct the plane from scratch? RE: zenoah g-62 w/electronic ignition
I agree with Dave. I am very happy with my G62 converted to electronic ignitinon by Ralph at RCIgnitions. It is about 1.5 lbs lighter than my other G62 with a spring starter. It starts very easy, has lower vibration levels at idle and runs great. Greg

OS 91 Surpass four stroke rebuild
I have an OS 91 surpass four stroke engine. It has quite a number of gallons of fuel run through it and it is down on power. I have adjusted the valve clearance to 0.006", and this made little difference. I have also cleaned the carbon deposits from the cylinder head and valves, changed glow plugs, tweeked needle valves, etc. I compared my engine to another OS 91 surpass and my engine does not have as much compression as the other engine when turning the prop over by hand. I think it is time for a rebuld. My question is: Should I just replace the ring, or should I also replace the cylinder liner? Should I lap the valves, or replace the cylinder head also? Greg

RE: 1/4 scale Concept Fleet
It looks great. I am building one right now. I am to the point where I am ready to cover it with Stits, then I will paint it. I am debating if I should spend part of the flying season getting the Fleet ready to fly this year, or if I should just set it aside and finish it next year. I also will put a G-38 on mine. I am also curious about: - wing incidence - servo mounting - did you have to add weight to get it to balance. thanks, Greg
