RE: Sail Servo/Battery questions
Remember that you don't get ought for nought and double hauling effectively reduces the force on the sheets by half. An alternative solution would be the servo stretcher: http://servocity.com/html/180o_servo_stretcher.html . Following the "ought for nought" theme, this way you lose out on serv travel speed.

RE: Sail Servo/Battery questions
You're going to be limited by space concerns to fit an arm winch. Most use consumer NiMH cells, either 4 or 5. which with today's high capacity, should be sufficient for a morning's or afternoon's sailing. Most drum winch servos require a means of maintaining tension in the sheets to avoid tangling.

RE: monsoon or phantom?
There's a build thread on the Monsoon on http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=14796.0 I'd be prepared for substituting a lot of the original equipment on this and other models from the same manufacturer. It's built to a price and this seems to have been apparent in many areas.

RE: Need recommendation for my 1st RC boat
While you're waiting for the book, the RG65 class is definatelyworth a look, especially as there are boats already sailing in Oz and the class is now growing rapidly internationally. register on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RG65SailboatsUS/ and you'll be able to access drawings for about 20 different boats, from simple hard chine models to plank on frame construction. PS They'll also be a more suitable competitor, size wise for the Wee Nip, especially with a reduced suit of sails.

RE: h double sided tape, but howHow to build pocket luff or in- tbubing forestay.
Tato a luff pocket is a "coñazo" with plastic film type sails. I've found that taping plastic tubes from cotton buds (bastoncitos) about 1 cm in length at 15 cm intervals much easier.

RE: RG65 question
Mike, if you're thinking of a one metre Blue Splash then you'll need a much heavier duty sail control servo; say something in excess of 250 oz/inch of torque or a winch. A standard servo on an RG65 would be sufficient. My partially built Blue Splash will have a GWS Micro 2BB MG servo for the sails and a micro for the rudder. The hull is sealed balsa only, although that probably wouldn't be strong enough if scaled up to one metre size. http://rg65.free.fr/start.php is probably the best site for RG65 plans. It's a French site, but fairly straightfoward.

RE: RG65 question
One of the advantages of the metric system is that scaling is easier 65 cms > 100 cms = 153.85%. Generally, its safer scaling up than down, even though there are some RG-65 built as 65% one metres e.g. Laerke. Assuming most RG65s displace about 1 kg, you'ld end up with about 3.65 kg displacement as a 1 metre.

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log
You might try to reduce your electronics weight. You pobably need a sail control servo of about 10kg/cm minimum. Servos of that size usually weigh quite a bit. One of the lighter analogue ones is the Cirrus P-CS701/BB which weighs in at about 45g. There are also plenty of mini sevos around for your rudder that put out the approx 3kg/cm you´ll need. Lithium non rechargeable AA cells weigh only half the weight of NiMH cells or you could use a small 7.2 volt 2S lipo pack

RE: robbe windstar
To make it IOM legal, you'll have to ensure you get the clear resin hull. It's by far the cheapest kit entry into the class. Any http://duck.sbmyc.com/kit_ioms.html One of the more economical alternatives might be: http://www.rcsegel.de/index1.html Despite what looks like a carbon mast in the illustation, it's outlawed under IOM rules and should be aluminium.

RE: Hurricane 1 meter
If memory serves me right, the hurricane is a boat built to the Naviga 1 metre rules and is therefore not sailed much outside central/eastern Europe where the Naviga organisation has most of its influence. The boat itself seemed more like a racing boat than the usual semi scale kit boats and is probably a reasonable performer. But don't expect it to be alowed in an IOM regatta. As a boat for pleasure sailing, it's probably better than a lot of the stuff originating in China and I think quite a few found their way to Oz hobby shops.

I've no idea how it converts to degrees of camber, but when I made a sail block, the angle between the two halves was 6º and the thickness/chord ratio was about 16% with maximum thickness at about 30% chord.

RE: Homemade sails?
http://www.rcsailing.net/forum1/showthread.php?t=3110&highlight=gadget&page=6 It isn't the method I use, but it seeme an improvement on the traditional sail makers block. It's a long thread and the method didn't get a look in until page 6. As for material look for 35 or 50 micron Mylar (about 50 or 70 g/m2) from stationers - it's a drafting film. Failing that get some florist's wrapping film, but this has to be cupt with a fine tippped soldering iron, otherwise it'll tear.

RE: Thinking of sailing
One of the added pleasures of sailing is sailing with or against other sailors in similar boats. Probably the best entry leve. boats available for this would be, assuming you don't want to build from plans, the Thunder Tiger Victoria or the Victor Model Products V32, which both have a large following in the US with plenty of online support. If you are attracted to the building aspect, the RG65 class http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RG65SailboatsUS/ is another option worth looking at.

RE: hi i have a 1960s boat hull
Go for carbon tube 8-10 mm outside diameter. Somewhat smaller for the booms. Kite shops are a good source as well as havigng ripstop for the sails.

RE: hi i have a 1960s boat hull
If it has to be wood, it's almost cetainly needs to be hand made, probably from spruce or similar. If carbon is OK, you might be able to find a fishing rod blank of a suitable taper. Otherwise a non-tapered aluminium or carbon mast would be the choice. What size is the hull?

The manufacturer had proposed a review and chosen a reviewer (me[;)]) However, due to communications problems, ( http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=677484&page=10 ), it didn't happen. I don't think there have been any further efforts to review the model since then. The thread that I've linked is quite long and might provide interesting reading anyway, as it covers needed mods, setting up etc.
