RE: New ZDZ-80
ORIGINAL: LQUAN Be patient running these motors in. As recomended by ZDZ and RCS, use a mineral based 2 stroke oil for the fist 2-3 gallons of fuel at 32:1 use a 26x8 or 26x10 for running in. Hi guys, I have a ZDZ80 Super black head that I bought brandnew on RC Universe last November for my 33% Aeroworks Edge540T. The engine runs great when it starts, but it was so difficult to start so I sent it to RCS. I thought it was a carburator problem so I insisted on asking for a Walbro. Mike Dooley was nice enough to replace the Tilloston carburator with a Walbro for free. He also replaced my ignition system. I was able to run the engine per ZDZ instructions for about 3 flights then the same problem started again. I finally figured out that it was the ignition problem - the spark intensity is not strong enough. I recently bought a used ZDZ ignition and the motor starts easy. Ignition off, high trottle, choke on, 6 flips. Then, choke off, ignition on, low throttle, 1 flip, it starts. Comparing the spark quality at the plugs show the one that work, has a blue spark, the one didn't, has yellow spark. I recently have an exhaust leak between the muffler and cylinder, but that is not my concern, a little bit of high-temp RTV can seal it. My concern is the metal shavings that get spit out from the leak and onto the cowl. The motor has not been fully broken in yet. The high-end is 1.5 turns, the low-end is 2 turns. Running with 40:1 Aimsoil Saber. Should I be concerned with the metal shaving and keep on running it? When I flip the propeller to start it, it does not feel like it has high compression like before or comparing to my other brandnew ZDZ80 Super. I don't think the engine is running lean, the sound pitch is the same on level flight as vertical flight. I was happy with service I got from Mike so I bought the second brandnew ZDZ for my scale Yellow P-40 - unpainted head with Walbro carb. It has not been ran yet.
RE: New to Gas Engines
I would recomend using something like the smartfly optical ignition kill switch. Purely from a safety perspective, being able to kill the motor from a flick of the swich on the tx might save you injury or damage should something go wrong.

Does the 9303 have a flight mode trim function? is that might be the reason the trim changes with the dr swich.

Got a Moki 180 in mine at its sweet. keep it light, and the moki will haul it round well. used straight 80/20 in mine, no nitro, and it runs good. just got to prime it well and it will start easily. make sure you got large diameter fuel lines, and possibly a pump or cline reg.

Swiched over to Castrol Racing Synthetic this week end and what a difference from the sooty mineral crap. Got about 10liters through it with mineral 2stroke. could still probably lean it out a touch. Oh if the 5-5-1 dosnt work, there is either no fuel or no spark, :D Thanks to all for the good tips and advice on this superb motor.

RE: 3W80Xi OR ZDZ80RV-J
difficult choice, think they both great motors, i have thr rvj and like it lots, and cant say anything bad about the 3w. think the zdz has a small edge over the 3w. The ZDZ is really smooth for a big single, and should swing simmilar sized props to most 100 twins. The ZDZ gets my vote.

Spent some time on the needle settings today. Peaks at about 6400 with the cowl off, and 6250 with the cowl on. went in a tad on the high needle and have a really good transition, but think i can lean it out a bit more. This thread has been a great source of good info on the ZDZ.

RE: connecting fuel tank
ORIGINAL: pedromvf Thanks for the information Joe. May I ask what do you mean by barbs? I was planning to use little cable ties to keep the silicon tubing from slipping off. Regardin the petrol stopper. I am not sure if I can get one from where I live. Can I just leave the tubbing connected to the outside of the fuselage? Will the tank spill fuel in flight when the engine is working? Cheers Pedro
Should be able to get the stuff from Al's Hobbies. got some stuff from them in the past. they are in finchley. also MY hobbies in Leytonstone.

The Hangar 9 hand crank pump works great, fills the 40oz tank in my sukhoi in a reasonable time. I got a 10liter jerry can from a local auto spares store and using some du-bro and h9 filters. got some nice fillers, fuel dots and tank fittings from troy built models.

thanks Lyle, think i will try a 2cell lipo, or 6 cell nicd or nimh. the 1700 is ok, but only good for afew minutes. just interested to hear what others are using. must say the 5-5-1 method of starting is 99% flawless. today, filled up, 5-5 and was purring on the first flip. put the cowl on, and it started fist flip about 30min later, had a flight. filled up, and another 30 min later it started first flip. was ok for about 5 min, then it just bogged down, suspect the ign bat.

ZDZ recomend a synthetic or semi synthetic 2 stroke oil and 93octane gas mixed @ 40:1. anything from 32:1 to 50:1 should be ok, but would keep it @ 40:1

The 5-5-1 works like a charm. 5 flips full throttle, choked ign off. 5 flips full throttle choke off ign off. set to idle and it goes first flip most times.

RE: New ZDZ-80
busy running in my 80 rvj, had a look at the ZDZ website and they recomend the low needle 1 1/4-1 1/2 tturns out and the high needle at 1 3/4 - 2 turns out. dont know for what carb that is, cause mine with the tillotson carb dosnt run too good like that, runs great on the ground but dosnt pull in the air, found 1.5 turns on both needles worked better but still the motor dosnt respond well, but am still running on 32:1 mix. A question: What are you guys with the tillotson carbs needle settings? (swinging a 26x10 menz) The motor is in a 33% su31, which means the carb is inside the motor box. the motor box has a few large holes in it from the previous motor, the first flight with the rvj, i blocked up the holes and it ran good on the ground but was hunting while flying. havnt seen too many pics of installations on the rvj, what is the norm? do they want lots of air forced in or do they prefer a large "airbox" type installation? have run about 5 liters of 32: 1 through it and it keeps getting stronger on the ground but not so good in the air.
