HK F-86
Hi Guys Just picked up a HK F-86 70mm, was wondering if there were any important mods I should do before flying. I heard something about adding a wing spar to keep the wings from snapping off ???? Would like to know the throws on the flight controls, heard the instructions were poor. Thanks for your help ! Charlie

That is correct the airflow through the tunnel caries the fuel oil mix to the rear bearing.

I have had good luck using gun blue on steel cases. http://www.amazon.ca/Birchwood-Casey-Super-Blue-3-Ounce/dp/B0000C515I Its a chemical process that goes on bare metal does not scratch and is mostly rust resistant. Best part is it gives a slek dark colour that does not fade with heat. Geoff

Somthing to try if the compressor is a tight fit on the shaft is to warm it up with a heat gun. Get it to the point you can just hold onto it with a bare hand and it will slide on or off no problem. Geoff

RE: How to rebuild a RAM 750..cause I dont know..lol
I dont have an exact torque. With the shaft in the lathe chuck I put the turbine on first and fairly tight by hand. The left hand threads should become tighter against the rotation of the rotor. You can use a T-socket or T-bar to reduce the bending force put on the shaft. The engines in principal are simple but the devil is in the details. Geoff

RE: How to rebuild a RAM 750..cause I dont know..lol
Front or rear preload refers to the location of the springs. If they are at the compressor end then it is front preload. The rotors are preloaded so the spring is moving the bearing in the direction that the rotor is trying to go with the most force. On my 1st turbine the rotor wants to go aft at low rpm and at about 75k rpm and above the compressor trys to move the entire rotor fowards. I blew up a front bearing and compressor while I was trouble shooting this. The rotor moved forward enough to overcome the rear preload and unloaded the balls in the front bearing races. Geoff

RE: How to rebuild a RAM 750..cause I dont know..lol
The 1st picture of the shaft with the lip of the inner race to the front is correct. Like wise the rear bearing should have the lip to the back. If they are GRW bearings the outer race will have a faint arrow etteched onto the outer diameter of the bigger race. The arrorws should face away from each other when installed on the shaft. The preload system forces the outer races towards the end of the shaft so the inner races need to have the lips away from each other to capture the balls. The compressor and turbine should force the inner race into the balls which will load the balls against the outer races and compress the preload. To install the balls cover them in vaseline put them into the outer race and then the inner race should press into the balls with a slight click and then turn free when fully installed. Clean the bearings and apply a little oil before installing. I think thats a kj66 engine and would have 608 bearings. The Grw 608 bearings have 11 balls. With all the balls installed there will be a slight gap just smaller then the diameter of a ball. They can make a clinking sound at low speed beacuse with no race to seperate the balls one can fall and fill the gap as they spin. You should be able to leave the diffuser attached to the tunnel. The race should be very close but free fit in the tunnel for the preload to work. Am not sure it that engine uses coil spring or wave washers for preload and if it is front or rear preload. Xicoy in spain is the best place I could find to get bearings. http://www.xicoy.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=1_7 Even with shipping and conversion they where cheaper then the others. They ship fast and the customer support is the best. Geoff

I'm guessing Paul but I think your extra flare moved the CG back a little and that is why your model pitched to the belly. Cheers, Malcolm

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hey Larry, Have you done your maiden? So looking forward to it. Man, have I been busy finishing off the outside of the house. All along I kept saying to myself "I must finish all this before Labour Day Weekend so I can return to the Avenger" Only seven months left until Toledo, hope I can finish on time for the show. The turret so far has taken about three and one half days to construct, with an estimated two days to completion. Peter

That was a very quick take off and smooth landing. I also fly off a sod farm. Never thought a 104 would fly well from our feild. Do you think it will operate ok from grass? Geoff

RE: Performance Aircraft Unlimited P-38 ARF 120
If the economy ever turns around we may get back on this project. We would love to bring a scaled up version of this. As you can imagine though, there's quite a bit of R&D that goes into a plane like this. Everything has to be spot on before we would consider offering it. The original is still flying though and it's not been forgotten.

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Noah, Plan is to finish Avenger then start into DC3. $30.00/ flight, ouch !! Have to start my own distillery for the alcohol. Redtail, Not sure about "best of show" that is a tall order beyond my skill level, just want to make it there so I can say to myself I did it. Fleet, Pot Hole Jolt, I think they are speed metal band out of Jersey. Ha Ha. Peter.

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hey guys, Well I guess it's Velcro and foam. Noah, the Evo's are for the Ziroli DC3, only small radial that will fit the cowling and I will still have to split it to get an extra 5/8" on the diameter. I figure 2x7 cylinders with a Twin Sync set up should sound not too shabby. I'll check with Tom. I have to get my but in gear, Toledo is my goal for the Avenger. Thanks guys, Peter

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hey Guys, Well ummmmm It seems landscaping is more important than building airplanes, don't get me wrong, Barbara is good to me, she even let me buy a shinny new trailer but the Avenger has suffered a small set back. Need ideas for securing Avenger and now a 140" Ziroli DC3 inside the trailer, any thoughts; Velcro, bungees, Barbara? The DVI still has not flown but it will happen soon. I started back at the build yesterday and managed to get the gun turret roughed in. Question#1; anyone have a picture of what the inside of the man door looks like ? Question#2; Anyone have experience with Evolution radials 7-35, are they any good? Peter

RE: F-4 Phantom with Canards
Canards and a conventional tail on the same airframe conflict with each other. Plus I think the F-4 was rather heavy for a fighter. Makes me wonder what current engines and composite material would do performance. Lighter weight and lower fuel burn, I think it would be down right scary what it could do.
