RE: SIG 1/4 Piper J-3 Cub -> PA-18 Super Cub conversion build
Some progress... I am about to finish the aileron and flap woodwork and hinging this weekend. Then, it is the wing struts until all the woodwork of my Super Cub is finally done!!! Pictures will follow. I still have an ambitious idea to finish my plane before the summer. It means two months of hard work, but I will try.
ORIGINAL: Navy18 HH, I did wish to pirchase a cowl from you as soon as possible. I have cut the ailerons and am building the senter section now. I should be able to frame her all up for the first time next week. What is the best way to solder the gear assembly? I have no serious soldering experience and will need to buy the progper equipment. How much additional to ship to Ohio, USA and where do I send the cash or check.... or paypal maybe. Thanks.
The price for cowl and shipping in economy package is $45,00 total (48 states, excl. Hawaii & Alaska). Please inform your email, I´ll then send you a $45,00 money request to your email address through PayPal. The economy package is quite slow, will take 14-21 days. Some progress in my project, shaping the wing leading edges right now.

Sorry for late answer, I´ve had some very busy times at work recently. Travelling around Europe etc. Well, I think PayPal is the best option for payment. I´ll calculate the costs this weekend and I´ll post them here. My mold and other equipment is perfectly ready for cowl molding. I can send a money request through PayPal to your e-mail address. My own project is in slow progress mode again. My wings are almost ready, but I still have to build the ailerons and flaps until the basic framework is ready. Please, feel free to post some pictures of your project as you are ahead of me.

The center section is stock - except the enlarged window. The earlier picture shows the center section before it was glued permanently to the left wing panel. Here´s a picture showing the final center section structure. I left the right panel - center section joint open for clarity. So, the structure is basically stock. The picture shows those small fillets next to center section trailing edge. They are necessary for flap installation.

My right wing panel is about to become finished this week. Then, there´s only the left wing panel left until the basic woodwork is done. Ouch, I almost forgot flaps + ailerons. Pictures are not good and sorry for the (usual) mess in my workshop. As you see, I have modified the wing structure in order to build the ailerons separately. I will post more pictures later this week. Also, here´s a poor picture showing the enlarged center section window.

RE: SIG 1/4 Piper J-3 Cub -> PA-18 Super Cub conversion build
I use the following brands: - UHU Hart hobby glue (in 90% of my glued wood joints) - Flash thin cyano - Flash medium cyano - fast and slow Araldit epoxy - PVAC white glue (B3 water resistant) I have found the traditional German hobby glue UHU Hart to be absolutely the best in normal wooden structure building. It is very cheap, strong and fast drying. Also, it is the best canopy and window glue I have found so far. As an "old-school" glue, its thinner-like odor is quite strong. I use cyano and white glue occasionally, and epoxy when extra strong joint is needed (firewalls etc.) White PVAC glue gives a lot of "open-time" to adjust the glued pieces if needed. I think UHU Hart is available in Europe only.

Wing center section is finished and I´ve started the right wing panel. I´m not using the original aileron building method of the kit... instead I build them ailerons (and flaps) separately. Also, some very minor wing panel mods are needed for flap installation. Pictures will follow in the weekend.

I´m back after a very busy 4 week working period and now I have more time for hobbies. It means some Super Cub building progress. I have promised myself to finish the woodwork of my model within this month. Let´s see how it goes. I have started the wing building by assembling the wing center section. Originally, I was going to design my own center section to make the top window larger as it is in real Super Cub. Anyway, I decided to use the original building method except that I enlarge the window opening as much as possible. Please see the picture. There is only some small extra balsa sheet pieces needed. I´ll start the wing panels as soon as the center section is finished.

OK guys, some progress. Tail feathers are ready (almost), only some hinge work etc. left. Just couple of hours, and then it´s time to start the wing construction. Please see the pictures. The drawing under my rudder comes from www.supercubproject.com, I printed it and scaled to correct 1/4 size. I have built the fin as the plan shows, except that it is only 6 mm ( 1/4" ) thick... as well as is my stabilizer and elevator. I will start my wing construction by building the center section first. Some modifications will take place, because of the larger top window in Super Cub. If someone (?) has already started the wing panel construction, please show your results. I will start mine quite soon. I will build the wing panels without the ailerons. I just find the original wing + aileron building method quite clumsy. It is easier to build the wings and ailerons / flaps separately. I´m ordering the required servos and radio gear today, I´m going to use German Multiplex servos and receiver. Ailerons, flaps and throttle will be operated by Multiplex #65123 Mini HD standard servo, and #65126 Tiger Carbonite for tail feathers. Comparable Futaba servos are S148 and S3010.

Today I have continued the tail feather woodwork. The weather is becoming very unpleasant for RC flying here in Scandinavia, so the building season is about to start right now! The stabilizer is almost ready, the elevator(s) are on my table right now. I´ll post some pictures later today. I have also finished the ABS cowl mold pieces by priming and sanding them a lot. So, I´m ready to receive the cowl orders. The price I´m asking for the set of ABS cowl pieces is 20,00 Eur (= 13,80 GBP = 27,60 USD). The price does not include delivery, the approximate shipping costs to USA (except Hawaii and Alaska) in economy package are about 15,00 Eur (= 20,70 USD). The shipping to Europe it is approx. 10 Eur. Please send your orders to my email address (remove "NOSPAM"): hannu.hjulbergNOSPAM@pp.inet.fi Including your name and your complete delivery address. The preferred and most likely the safest payment method is PayPal. After receiving your order, I will send a money request by email through PayPal. I will ship the cowl immediately after receiving the money. I will send a template with the cowl to ensure the correct location of the cowl openings. Some of you who have already sent the orders to this thread some time ago will be served first.

RE: SIG 1/4 Piper J-3 Cub -> PA-18 Super Cub conversion build
I have lacquered the balsa mold pieces heavily, some sanding and more lacquering is still needed to make the mold surface hard and smooth. So, I´ll have the cowls ready for shipment after next weekend. My digital camera stopped working, so I can´t show you any pictures today. I have finally continued the tail feather woodwork, I except to have them finished within two weeks. I will build the fin exactly as the Sig plan shows, but the rudder will be made by the same way as the stabilizer and elevator. After that, it´s time to start the wing construction. I have also decided the covering and painting methods - as well as the paint scheme. I will cover my Super by using silver-coloured Solartex and automotive paint. I used this method in my other Super Cub, and I really like the realistic look of the covering. Silver base colour in covering prevents the sun shining through the structure in flight. The paint scheme is that classic original red - and - white Super Cub factory paint I like very much. Please see the pics. That paint scheme gives the plane a nice vintage look. And, the float installation will be permanent. I will finish this building thread by showing how I build Edo round top floats with aluminium streamline legs and rigging wires. But, not until the plane itself has been covered and painted. The building motivation is quite high right now and you will see some quick progress. One more thing, I haven´t found any better pictures of early 60´s classic paint scheme. Please post 'em if you have some.

OK guys, here´s some pics of the vacuum formed ABS cowling side I made today. The vacuum forming procedure itself goes nicely, but I´m not happy with the result. I still have to fix my balsa mold, there´s some small imperfections in the final surface that I want to get rid of. I have sanded the mold completely smooth but it is just not enough. I have to cover the soft balsa surface by fiberglassing it and then some priming - sanding procedure is needed. I just want to sell a perfect product. I have learned my lesson: the mold has to be flawless - just like making fiberglass parts.

RE: SIG 1/4 Piper J-3 Cub -> PA-18 Super Cub conversion build
OK guys, the cowl project continues (finally) - as well as the Super Cub build. As I told earlier, I have to fix my mold until the vacuum-formed cowl is nice and smooth. I´m not making a new mold, I just put several coats of clear lacquer and some sanding to finish the surface. I´m out of ABS plastic at the moment, I have ordered more of it and I should receive it within two weeks. So, I have time to finish the mold until the plastic arrives. Unfortunately the two-piece cowl mold is the only option here. I tried to form a one-piece cowl but the attempt was not successful. Enclosed you find some pictures of my earlier Super Cub with the vacuum-formed cowl number 1 installed. The pictures were taken by Juha Reinikka and Matti Jyllilä at Skala Väst in Gothenburg, Sweden last weekend.

RE: SIG 1/4 Piper J-3 Cub -> PA-18 Super Cub conversion build
Some news concerning the cowl project: The first one is ready and I´m currently fitting it to my "other" Super Cub to cover its newly installed Zenoah ZG20Ei gas engine. The cowl is as scale as possible, so whatever engine you install inverted, it will show. If you see from my poor photos, the surface is not 100% smooth. That´s because my mold is made of balsa and it turned out to be too soft for vacuum forming. So. I have to fix my mold until the result is 100% perfect. I´ll get back to the cowl issue within two weeks, stay tuned.

RE: What Finish would I use for a scale Piper Tri Pacer?
I would recommend a silver Solartex and a thin coat of automotive paint. It´s not the cheapest one but it will look very realistic on the ground and in the air (silver base color prevents the "see-through" effect). Swiss FAI F4C RC Scale world champion Andreas Luethi has covered his Jungmeister with Solartex.

Some news concerning the Super Cub conversion project. Some of you must have thought that this thread is dead and buried. You were wrong. [;)] I´ve been very, very busy at work recently, no time for hobbies at all [:o]. That´s why this thread has been very quiet from my side. The quiet time will continue for the next two months or so, this thread will really come alive after the holiday season in September. I have planned to fly the maiden in spring 2008. Anyway, the ABS cowl will be available early September. I´m so sure about this that I´m ready to collect orders (if somebody is still interested...). The price level is somewhere around $20 + shipping. I don´t know how to handle the payment details etc. but let´s get back to that a bit later. Have a nice summer to all of you and fly safely! RE: New 81" GP Super Chipmunk
Hi everyone, here´s mine: Super Chipmunk On Ice!!! I had my maiden flight last weekend, everything went just fine. What a nice plane! Here´s a list on components used: - Zenoah G20EI gas engine (from Toni Clark) - Toni Clark 500 cc fuel tank - APC 16x8 propeller - Toni Clark 2450 mAh LiPo one cell ignition battery - Multiplex Micro IPD 7-channel receiver - 5 x Futaba S148 (ailerons + flaps + throttle) - 2 x Futaba S3010 (rudder + elevator) - 1700 mAh NiCd 5-cell receiver battery I had to install 400 g of extra ballast to the firewall to get my Chippie perfectly balanced. As you see, the engine fits inside the cowling nicely. Only a small piece of original muffler as well as the spark plug cap are visible. If some manufacturer offers a very compact Pitts-style muffler for G20, there will be no need for cowl cutting. I think G20 and Chipmunk are a match made in heaven!

RE: SIG 1/4 Piper J-3 Cub -> PA-18 Super Cub conversion build
OK guys, starting the building again. Here´s a picture of my elevator project. My table´s very messy, sorry for it. I´m not using SIG´s original method in tail feathers, I find it too clumsy (and way too thick to look scale...) Anyway, I have used 2 mm balsa sheets here and I´ll glue 2x6 mm strips to both sides. So, the final thickness is only 6 mm. The strips will simulate the steel tubes nicely under the covering. I also glue two 2x6 mm strips to the front edge. My hinges are made by Kavan, there´s removable pins in them for easy assembly. I will use the very same method in rudder, but the fin will be build as it is originally in the plan... except that I sand the balsa strips for fin to the 6 mm thickness to match the rudder. Believe me, these tail feathers will be very sturdy and solid... they look scale and are lighter than the original ones. Well, you have to buy some extra balsa if you wish to follow my idea... but only some 2 mm sheets. ------------------------------- I have also reconsidered my tail feather servo location, maybe I´ll put them inside the fuse instead of my original idea.

Here´s the pics of the fuse, sorry for the poor quality. I will install the tail servos as mentioned before. I have made those servo platforms using some scrap balsa and birch. Normally I never install the servos that way but this time I find some good reasons to do so. G26 is so heavy that some extra ballast in the rear is needed. Servos can serve as an extra weight too. If my servo fails some day, it´s easy to replace it. Tomorrow I start processing the elevator. Some major modifications will take place to make it look like Super Cub´s elevator.

OK, my fuselage is about to become ready for covering this weekend. There´s still something small to do, I have to finish my special reinforcement for float installation as well as to glue some servo installation parts. I´ll start making the tail feathers tomorrow, some pics will follow. ----------------------------------------------------- I have made "the final decisions" concerning the Super Cub build. I´ll use the following components and methods to make it a real "bushplane": - tail servos Futaba 3010 - servos for ailerons & flaps & throttle Futaba S148 - Solartex covering (silver) - Cub yellow paint with black lightning on the fuse side - square wing tips, extended ailerons - Vortex generators... maybe - for float flying only I will install the tail servos under the elevator so that they remain visible for easy maintenance. I´ll use the same method with the wing servos. Enclosed you find a picture (from Smith Aviation website) of a real Super Cub. That´s pretty much what I´m looking for (except that I will paint my no-amphib floats silver). I´ll post some pictures of my fuse in the evening.
