RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?**
build a big bonfire and fly through the smoke a couple of hundred times. Then try to land on a flat roof a bunch of times, put snow skiis on it, and then floats and fly it off the water. After 5 years of doing this, and if your plane is still alive it is perfectly naturally weathered although it may need to be rebuilt lol!! There are a few guys on this thread that can vouch for that huh? [;)] With all kidding aside, your plane should look great after you do some scale weathering on it. Good luck! J

RE: Great Planes Seawind
Oh, my ears are hot lol! Someone mention me :) Ok, I tried the step extention too. At 3" the plane couldn't rotate. Yes, that is true. At 1", the plane rotated and it helped with the porpoising but not much. What really helped were the aileron stock back from the step. Do not attatch them permanently, just put them on as I did so if you don't like them, you can take them off. Also, the "V" hull doesn't help any at all with that porpoising. It makes it easier for the front end to dig into the water and then it pops back up like a cork. Do you see flat bottom john boats and seamasters porpoise? The "V" hull helps with big waves though but I wouldn't fly in those conditions anyway lol! J

RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?**
funny you should ask about my big p-51 Glenn :) I stopped building it because I refused to use the original bryrofoam wings. I just sat there scratching my head for over a year. Then it dawned on my that top flites big p-51 wing is almost the same. So when I went to order it, Tower was out of stock and that was last year. Well, I don't know if it was fate, intuition, or what, but I got an email from tower hobbies today saying that it was in stock! Weird I know. So, I am going to order it and put it on the byron. I heard it is lighter than the foam wing also. So, in a nutshell, I think I may get this bird in the air or at least finished by this fall! It has been a 5 year process!! Jeff

TomD, no it will not. Do not attempt to fly it without the wing tube, you could have a real disaster on your hands. You will have to figure out a way to separate the two halves. Bandsaw might be your best option and then you will have some fabricating and finish work to do afterwards. Good luck on your build, J

hey Glen! Hunter is doing very well and is healed now. We have one more appointment at children's hospital in Seattle and then to just enjoy life! We are golfing 2 to 3 days a week and flying mostly electrics for the time being. Helis are big in my life now but I still look at my mustang every day hanging in the shop! I will fly her a few times this year that is for sure. It would be really nice to get another one of these and I would totally go electric with it and run it on 6s or better to see how fast I could make it. It would have to have retracts too! Hope everything is well with you too Glen and wildhare! J

this thread is for CMP (china model products) cessna 140 sold through nitro planes.com It is a very good plane and is a bit larger than the KMP cessna (Kondor Model Products). It is also a 182 whereas the Kmp cessna ia a 185.

So did you balance it or did someone else balance your plane? Balancing has to go by the directions not by a sticker and I never trust someone else on balancing my planes. It is the single most important part of a good flying airplane. Or - did you have the flaps down on takeoff? that will make the plane balloon like crazy too. I hope you get her back in the air soon, this plane is an incredible machine when flying properly. I would like to get another one and turn it into electric running on 6s at over 100mph! Jeff

LOL! I would keep it too. I remember those arfs were $119.00 back in the day. Mine is in need of a ground up restoration, almost all of the stickers are off but it still flys great! I came in hot on a landing and the tail wheel hit a small sage brush and ripped the rudder off the last flight and I havent fixed it yet LOL! My son flys it mostly now but we didn't fly too much this summer because he got in a terrible accident on his motorbike and broke his femur 2" below the femural ball and shoved the rest of it in his groin. He is lucky to be alive and we spent alot of time at Harborview hospital in Seattle, Washington. All summer was rehab and bringing him back to normal. He is ok for now, we have another appointment in March to see if the ball is getting sufficient blood. He is walking, running and hiking with me now and he healed fast but has a titanium plate, screws and a hell of a scar to show for it. Needless to say, the racing is behind us and golfing and RC is in the future !!!!!!!! So other than that, real well HEE HEE! When I do get out flying now it is mostly electrics and helis - yes, I said helis, I went to the dark side and I own about 7 of them now. My best ones are my Swift NX's and Century Swift 16. I also have a trex 450 that I fly alot too. You can see them on youtube under pc9jeff - we have about 70 videos up of flying. You still flying alot? J

I have no idea how many flights I have on mine but have threatened to retire it many times LOL! She has been on snow, ice, dirt, short landings, long landings, tumbled across the runway (when my rx went bad) and flown off of the water, and out of all of the planes that I own and have owned, this one is still my favorite most versitile plane! yes, she is still alive! Hey, I know what you mean Bob. My son Hunter (now 13) had a terrible wreck on his dirtbike 2 weeks ago. He broke his femur 1" below the ball and socket. He cannot put any weight on it for 8 weeks so he is wheelchair bound and no boats or float flying for a while. He had surgery and the whole nine yards. I have a new super cub with custom floats that I want to maiden but cannot get him into the boat! Poor guy, he is healing well, but all of our hobbies are put on hold for this year. Hope your knee gets better soon, Jeff

RE: Great Planes Seawind
I have said this time and time again. The step on this beautiful a/c is too far back, too deep and the v hull really helps it porpoise also contributing to this is the motor being up above the wing too far back with the prop being around the cg. If it had a flat bottom, and a smaller step a bit farther forward it wouldn't porpoise at all. Look at the Neptune, the seamaster and other flat bottom boats - they don't porpoise. Even guys that have went electric with the weight of the battery on the hull and very little weight up on top due to a lightweight motor still experience porpoising although not quite as much. On my Seawind I did alot of experimenting with different combos of props, steps and wingtip floats. The best solution I found was puting two strips of 1 1/2" aileron stock widthwise about 4'' back from the step. No porpoising at all but it was a bit harder to lift off. This also made landing alot easier too because it helped with the bounce if I landed too hard. This problem seems to come up every year about this time cause people want to fly their floatplanes. Great planes could have had an excellent plane but it had some serious design flaws because of being rushed into production way too quickly. I hope that they are re-designing this plane now because if they do, I may get another one. The things they need to do is: Carbon fiber engine mount from up top, structured into the tail and forward to the hull, bolted in. (One of the designers of the real seawind wanted to do this) Longer wingspan and wider wing cord. Longer nose (to help with cg) The wings need to be made of sheeted foam instead of built up for help in water proofing. The revolver has sheeted foam wings and they are lightweight and VERY strong. The canopy needs to fit better for sealing. get rid of the water plunger thing. better rudder. flat bottom, step farther forward. servos need to be in front - not in back. My tail servo got a bit wet and caught on fire! carbon fiber wing tube - not the cheezy wing joiner that is there now. Option of larger wingtip floats for easier takeoffs. Now, some of you may say that isn't scale but alot of rc planes are tweeked quite a bit because if they were made totally scale they would be almost impossible to fly. Besides, this plane is for fun flying anyway, it's not like someone is going to take this a/c to a scale competition huh? Jeff

RE: CMP Cessna 182 Building Thread>the best scale Cessna 1.20 size ARF that is on the market!!!
I do have my cessna all figured out - I have been flying it for almost 3 years now. I didn't tear into the wings to check and see if they are weak or to beef them up and the plane is flying just fine. I would like the sea commander floats but am steering towards the hangar 9 floats. I put a pair of them together for a freind last year and they are very nice floats. The sea commander floats look great but require a lot more work to get them to look standoff scale. Time that I don't have right now. J

Every mod I could do to it LOL! No, really just put the servos in direct drive with the elevator and rudder, fults front landing gear, 24cc fujii engine, lights etc. I had a Thunder tiger 120 pro on it and it was a real powerhouse for this plane but couldn't get it to run right so I put the gasser in. The 120 was better though. Wish I had a 30cc in it now. Oh, well, I am not going to change it. I follow this thread closely but failed to see the cessna on floats, which post is it? Jeff

RE: CMP Cessna 182 Building Thread>the best scale Cessna 1.20 size ARF that is on the market!!!
If you are going to put this plane on the water, the 60 sized floats are insufficient. The quarter scale floats would be better. Hangar 9's fiber glass floats are perfect for this plane - I have built them for a freind of mine. they are awesome and that is what I am going to put on my cessna. A 20cc engine will fly this thing but is not enough for the water. 26cc minimum for that and a 30cc would be better. This plane is heavy when finished, mine weighs over 15lbs and I tried to build it light. If you put floats on your plane, you will be the first that I have heard of. Next year, I will have floats on mine unless I get the 1/4 scale cessna first LOL! J

Do a search on google for that engine. Many reports of this engine. Most guys like it but early on, the engines were arriving with bent shafts but that was a couple of years ago and I think the problem was fixed. The Chinese want to sell their products and with negative feedback, they can't sell so they fix the problem so they will sell. Over the last 4 years, the stuff from China has gotten alot better but there are still some bum stuff still around. The 26cc is perfect for this plane IMHO. J

RE: CMP Cessna 182 Building Thread>the best scale Cessna 1.20 size ARF that is on the market!!!
Hi Tom, It's been a long time - good to hear from you! A 20cc would get this plane off the ground but it would fly like a pig. Well, it would fly like a real one LOL. I have been in alot of full scale cessnas over the years for my work and they all fly like pigs but are very stable LOL. I wouldn't do it. My 24cc fuji is alright but that is about it. I wish that it had more power. When a person gets used to this plane and it flys well, most would want more power for some fun stuff. I was working with a guy in Australia recently on his Cessna. He put a DLE 30cc in his. He had a great setup but lost the plane on the maiden because it took off early before flying speed was fast enough for stable flight. The DLE 30cc could have gotten him out of this trouble but the plane hit a pole and smashed into the ground. I feel really bad for him for all the trouble he went through building this plane to loose it on the maiden. If you are a very experienced pilot and want a super scale flight, the 20cc would be ok but doesn't have enough power to get you out of trouble. If you have seen my vids on youtube of my plane in flight, you will know what I mean by lots of ground speed before takeoff. J

RE: CMP Cessna 182 Building Thread>the best scale Cessna 1.20 size ARF that is on the market!!!
Ghostwhisperz, Hi, The 50cc engine you want to put on this plane is WAYYYYY too much. The firewall isn't beefy enough and it will surely vibrate and rip this plane apart. I would put a 26 to a 35cc engine in it. I have a 24cc in mine and although it flys this plane greaat, a 30cc would be better. I have a 52cc taurus in one of my IMAC/3D planes and I know what this engine is capable of, therefore, I wouldn't even think of puting it on my cessna LOL! A gas engine is a great choice for this plane although a two stroke glow engine flys it better IMHO but with the price of glow fuel these days, the reliablility and the mess it makes after the flight, the gasser is the right choice. No, absolutely not. The SeaMaster is prob the best 1st seaplane to fly if you have rc experience. It is really easy to fly. It takes off and lands like a butterfly and can be fast and manuverable too. The Seawind is "tricky" to say the least but is beautiful in the air and fast. Jeff

spare parts for esm tornado?
I have an esm Tornado cp 400. It is new and has never been built. I haven't built it because they have discontinued it and I am worried that if I crash it, I will have alot invested into it and won't be able to get any spare parts. It is fully blinged out with metal on the head and tail and has a Torque Tube. Does anyone have this heli or know where to get spare parts for it - especially the tail? Here is a picture of the tail - it has a very unique, different slider in it. thanks in advance, Jeff

RE: gyro for swift 16
Thanks for your imput rotordoc1, I was merely going to attatch the heli to a swivel seat on the spool and spool it up using NO cyclic + or - . I want to do this to test and see if the gyro is mounted and working properly for correct yaw. Yes, I have seen people attatch them to the ground and apply full cyclic and that would be bad. I could easily see the heli tearing it's self apart. The very heavy stool has a swivel seat on it and it would be great for testing to see if the gyro was mounted correctly and not destroy the tail rotor on spool up. I have thunder tiger 30 sized landing gear legs on my bird so they are stronger than the stock ones. Hmmm, maybe if I would have had the stock ones (taller) I would be flying now intead of waiting for tail rotor parts LOL! J

RE: gyro for swift 16
Rotor 9, I am glad you are the one that read my post first. Thank you for your quick reply. I do agree with you it's not the heli but the gyro and the way that it was mounted on the bird. I have read and seen alot of videos on the swift 16 and there are nothing but great reviews for this bird. I destroyed alot of parts on the tail but when I ordered more parts, I doubled everything on my order and it still only came to $60 with shipping! So when I get my parts, I am going to fix it and turn the gyro upside down. I also have a very heavy stainless steel stool with a ball bearing seat on it that I am going to bolt the helicopter to for preflight to make sure that everything is working properly. I can fly helis but the gyro thing always gets me. I do have a futaba gy401 that is currently set up in my trex 450xl but I really don't want to have to swap them out between flights. That would be a reall pain in the A$$. I would like to get this gyro running smoothly for now and in a month or so get another 401 or a quark. So, if I am going to use this basic gyro, what do I set the gain on it at and what gain should I set my transmitter at. Currently my transmitter is: Futaba 9 cap mode: gy mix: act rate-up: avc 70% cntr: avc 70% down: avc 70% The gain screw on the g192 is full on clockwise Thanks again for your reply and answers, J
