RE: More Rio 51 woes.
The connector is for an optional kill switch, or a failsafe equipped kill switch, be carefull, as you found out it will bite!! Mine runs ok, nothing special but ok. Use a business card to set your 'air gap' , the spacing between coil and flywheel. I took over 3 hours to finally get mine to fire for the 1st time. I am at 400 feet obove sea level and I had to set my low speed needle to 1 1/2 turns and high speed to 1 1/4 turns just to get it to fire. I am currently at 1 1/2 on the low end and 1 1/8 on the high but the most I can get out of it according to the little GPS unit is 25 mph, I tried to lean it out a hair more and it just got hot and dropped .5 mph. I really think these are just real finnicky about the needle settings, I tried to richen the low end up 1/8 turn and it would not start at all, went back to 1 1/2 and it fired in 4 or 5 pulls, but it is still def not a ZEN. I would have to suggest you try to return at least the engine and try another one, or possibly try getting a different boat or replace engine with a zen. I am almost ready to just bite the bullet and buy a MOD 5 ZEN from WHH. I do really like the hull though, I have yet to dump it over and I have seen a bunch of cats and unlimited styles flip a lot so I am sticking to this HULL but i am almost done with the fugi. I really hope you can either get her started or return the engine for a new one. Hairball

RE: News and updates from Aquacraft (RIO 51)
Well, Ive been busy working on a full size boat but finally got to fixing the Rio engine rails. Grim, the only other thing i would recommend is using course sand paper and sanding every where you are going to glass for a really good bond. I used a full piece from side to side over both runners and both corners up front at the cross brace and is rock solid now! Question for Grim, I noticed tower now has a exhaust brace available, do those of us with the early Rio need to buy this brace to protect the cyclinder, or is this available from aquacraft for free to eliminate the issue of broken exhaust ports? Thanx for your time Grim Hairball

RE: Scratch and dent Rio 51
My Rio will idle nice and slow and does not need to be thrown, I just set in the water and it idles just fine. On the flipside of the coin I really do like the idea of NOT having a sharp prop spinning 5" off the back of the boat so a clutch is ok with me also, but not necessary for easy launching or bringing back to shore. Bottom line is this: Its YOUR boat, if you want a clutch, get one.

RE: Exhaust question???
I am using Permatex ultra copper right now in my Rio 51. I had to hog out the ex exit hole to relieve preloaded tension and am using it to seal/hold the pipe in the transom and its been holding for 1 1/2 gals so far.

RE: News and updates from Aquacraft (RIO 51)
I have done the hull mod for proper pipe alignment, and got the new Rio 'welded' header pipe, so it now has good exhaust. I have another problem I am in the middle of fixing and am just wondering if this has happend to anyone else. The 'tall' wood runner that the engine bolts to on the ex pipe side tore out from the hull. Its a rather simple fix and is going to be way stronger than before but I dont think this should have happened. I am simply running new glass from one side, over both wood runners and to the other side in one complete piece, but is only about 8 inches wide as the one runner only pulled loose the first 6 inches or so. It did not put any holes in the hull it only pulled loose from the little 'flaps' of glass that run up each side of the runners about a 1/2 inch. Anyway, anybody else had this happen? Any ideas how/why it happened? And is my 'fix ok or is it going to add too much weight or any other thoughts would be great. Hairball

RE: RIO 51 header
ORIGINAL: martno1fan Dont use silicone it wont hold up for very long try teflon it holds up better. You dont even need to use that why not get a pipe that has o rings then you have the anti vibration pluss easier adjustment for the pipe. Mart
What o-rings are you talking about? The Rio has 2 o-rings in the water cooled coupler where the header pipe joins the tuned pipe, are these what you are talking about? Where do I get the TEFLON pipe joiner, because you are absolutely right, the silicon joiner is lasting a tank maybe 2 at the most.

RE: clutch dust
Ok, I gotcha on that JAW. I do that on my HPI Baja also to cut down on the clutch wear. That will def keep any clutch dust from appearing.

RE: clutch dust
As far as the air filter goes I know most full size boats dont run them either, mostly just a spark arrestor or flame arrestor in case of a backfire. I really dont want to run one and as long as its direct drive there is no reason too. I just thought maybe the clutch dust might be an issue. But the clutch simply may not ever slip enough barring a catastrophic problem to create enough dust to be a problem.

clutch dust
I have been checking a lot of boats both clutched and direct drive. I know my Rio has no air filter on it and decided to see if any others did. I found none! What about the clutch dust? The clutches slip a little before grabbing and this will generate a little dust inside the hull. Is this an issue? Do any of you guys run a filter because of this? One other question: my Rio does not have any kind of seal where the exhaust header bolts to cylinder, is this normal? I have read that some use an o-ring seal to the water cooled manifold but thats it. Mine seems to have slight seepage between the water cooled manifold and the cylinder and also between the header pipe and the manifold. Any suggestions on fixing this or is this normal.

Thanks for all the info. WHH was the place I had seen earlier but for some odd reason could not remember the name. I will def check them all out. Mauian, did they break after they contacted something or just let go by themselves. how did it cost you the flex shaft and stinger?

Where do you buy your props? which metal is best?
I would like to know some good places and people to deal with when it comes to picking a prop and quality and service. I also would like to know what metal is best stainless or aluminum or the copper, berylium, titanium grimmracer does. I did find a site that sold props that were ready to bolt on but cant find it now, I forgot too add to favs. they also had injection molded aluminum props that didnt need sharpening or balancing and were quite inexpensive. If anybody know of this website I would really appreciate an address or a link. Hairball

RE: 'Throwing' the boat to launch?
Well I got 2 good evenings of running! The engine has become WAY easier to start and she idles nice and low and reliably. Still has enough power to stay running when set gently into the water and requires no throttle input to stay running with very little forward motion.[:D] Now the bad news. even though i opened up the hull and 'relieved' the 'tension' on the exhaust, the header still broke, I dont think its welded, I think its soldered. Either way it broke. I fixed it, sort of, my welder was out of mig juice and all I had laying around was 035 flux core, so the weld job is UGLY!!, but holding. I will call for a replacement on monday morning. Also to insure the exhaust port didnt crack on me I cut the header tube where it enters the cooling collar and used silicone tubing (I can only get about 1-2 tanks before it cracks) to join the 2. I will be getting a diff exhaust soon but not really soon. Handles better than I had hoped for! I ran a gal fuel through it on sat/sun evenings and its getting better and better but ran out of sili tube tonight, so had to pack it in. Over all for my first RC boat I am absolutely HOOKED!!!

RE: Water pipes?
What about just tapping exhaust for a hose from cooling system? Might not be as cool as exiting under water but will probably help quiet it down a little.

RE: 'Throwing' the boat to launch?
Well I got it running( for a little while anyway) runs rough, had to lean out LSN 1/2 turn just to get it to fire. Factory servo and cable set up was way off also. It idles relatively nice, low too. I dont think it will require much above a nice low idle in the water either. No tach so just a guesstimate, but I would guess it was idling at around 2000 sitting still in water so not bad. It is still running way too fat but I dont want to start leaning her yet, might have to a little to get it to transition a little better and be reliable enough to take to lake on saturday. It definately should be able to just drop in with out 'having' to toss or throw it.

Yeah, if I decide to go for it hard I'll probably end getting something in the 84" range with twins and a clutch and reverse would be cool too.

RE: Wide open all the time?
This is my 1st rR/C boat of any kind so i am just 'soaking up' all the info I can. If it has a tendency to stall I think it would be ok to just turn up the idle a little.

RE: Wide open all the time?
Seeing I have yet to recieve mine I cant say from experience, but you should be ok. It may occasionially foul plugs but shouldnt be an issue every time you run I wouldnt think. I know with my gas cars we dont have any problems not running wide open. In 7 months I've only fouled 2 plugs in my HPI Baja.( over 7 gals of fuel)

RE: help please
I think the golden spectro would be just fine. Any high quality 2-stroke oil from moterbike shops or snowmobile shops mixed to the proper ratio should be more than adequate. I know guys running the 1/5 scale cars that are running the cheap saw/whacker oils with no trouble but I wont risk it. I will be running Red-Line full syn race 2-stroke oil.

RE: 'Throwing' the boat to launch?
Oh yeah, definately going to run a failsafe. I will probably run the Diemaster pico failsafe kill switch, as it will kill the engine in the event of lost signal, low or dead batt, etc. The only real issues that i have found so far with the Rio is the cracking header and the cracking cylinder at the exhaust port, and then some had issues getting the boat to fire up the first time. Any other issues? I did the search for the Rio on RCU before I ordered it and the previous stuff is all I found and I can deal with that.

RE: 'Throwing' the boat to launch?
MrMike, good call on SAFETY first. No quicker way to ruin a day at the lake than to go for stitches!! A bud of mine and I have a pair of HPI Baja's and were jumping them about 35-40 feet about 10 feet off ground when my 4 1/2 year old son decided to get a better look at the launch ramp, which of course put them lifting off at head level. Needless to say, I 'took one for the team' to keep him from getting hurt or worse. I was pretty banged up and could hardly move or take more than 1/2 a breath with out severe pain for about a week, so rest assured, safety is definately a top priority!

RE: futaba aircraft fasst 2.4 in a boat?
Yes,metal to metal contact CAN cause RF interference. Will it effect 2.4 I just dunno. AM will be effected and some times FM also, but while I really doubt it will effect the 2.4, it may. As far as air and surface use goes, I dont think it matters when you are running 2.4, only when using standard FM and AM systems( 27 both, 49 both, I think, 50 I dunno, 72 is air ONLY, and 75 is surface ONLY)
