Mine is like 90% done now but absolutely no time to build since my daughter was born 5 weeks a go. Definitely not ARF :)

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
Here is a picture of the spinner (Krumscheid). Diameter 140mm. As you can see on the pictures, I decided to use the stock exhaust dummies as they do not look as bad as I remembered. I found them in an old box containing some spare parts of my old FC Spitfire

This pipe is the "discharger" of the warm air coming out of the tunnel for the exhaust (which reminds me - I didnt post any pictures of that one yet). It will be installed to the bottom of the fuselage and connected to the tunnel later. The diameter is about 5cm I hope this will be enough.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
The tailwheel unit is from C-ARF and made of fiberglass. I was a bit disappointed about the bad quality, considering how much it costs. I hysoled a 6mm plywood former on the bottom of the fuselage and screwed the tailwheel onto it. As you can see the unit is removable as well. Will need to get a better looking wheel. I took this from the nose leg of an old 40" trainer. [:D] Originally my plan was to make the tailwheel retractable. I have a nice WABO tail retract unit but after some planning, I decided to keep it simple (weight and extra-hassle).[;)]

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
The Rudder and Elevator Servos are mounted below the back of the cockpit. I made the cover removable as well. I used a 4mm plywood plate and plenty of hysol to get a tight fit. I did some tests to see if further reinforcements would be necessary but all looks rock solid. The 8711 should do well for the elevator. Rudder is a Futaba 9452. The cover is made of some srcap plastic parts of a P-51 cockpit [:D]

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
Before painting the model, I finished the rudder linkage. You can see the sharp rudder I use to match the model close to a MK VII. I made the rudder itself removable with Robart hinge pins so I can still access the elevator linkage later.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
Alright, some more progress on the build. Installing the gear was a pain in the a** because the wheel wells are not in the correct position. Once the gear is retracted, the wheel hub is way out of center of the wheel well and there is no way that a 5,5-6" wheel will fit without major rebuilding. This is quite frustrating and in the current state it is only possible to fit a 5" wheel. Additionally, quite a lot of sanding was necessary to made the gear fit in the wing properly. Bit irritating for unites that were designed for this model. Will post pictures of the gear installation once its completed. First, a view of the interior with choke / throttle servo and the fuel tank. I use a 1100 cc Dubro tank which should give me lots of flying time with the 3W.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
To be fair with C-ARF I really think that most of the stuff is self explanatory and basic work for modellers building planes of this size, but I agree that patterns for formers or tricky stuff like tailgear instructions should be included even for early production models. As I am not going on competitions, I didnt bother with some of the changes to make my Recce Spit 100% accurate. I am almost certain that my flap mechanism will probably only give me 75-80 degrees, so I will most likely have to look into that again. Not sure how I'll sort that out yet tho. Anyways, I'll bring the shape of the strut doors to paper and post it here. I promise I'll have more pictures online this weekend as I received my main retracts today. As for the Rudder, the easiest way would probably be to build a wooden one from scratch. Maybe CARF decides to offer various versions of the canopy / rudder later - I think a lot of customers would appreciate that.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
Rebel, There were no instructions whatsoever in the kit. My rep told me that a manual should be released around August and that he would be mailing it to me. No news yet. I believe there is not much of a manual needed anyways. As for the CG location, I assume that it is the same as for the old FC Spitfire which is the first panelline that spreads from the wing root all over to the tip. My Mark comes close to a VII now, as I found a "sharp" spare rudder from my old kit and the Recon Model I have painted now was an MKVII. I am sure you mean the strut covers, as the spit didnt have real gear doors. There were no covers in the kit but I made them from alloy. I'll do a picture and post it here. Tailwheel was used to be retractable, but I found it too difficult to get that sorted in the fuselage so I ordered a comp arf tailwheel and mounted that with plenty of hysol on a wooden plate on the correct location. Cheers Hajo

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
Hello Guys! Sorry for the late update, I've been busy at work but the Spitfire is as good as complete! Rebel - as it looks now the Spit will balance out nicely with the 80' 3W. I don't think that I'll be needing lots of lead in the nose - Thanks to the new sandwich fuselage. So far no mods necessary, really. The model is great to build. For a ZDZ100 inline you would need to create a proper airflow in the model like the original Fiberclassic Model had. You might be lucky and I still have the old manual with some drawings for inline engine installations. I will update the build pictures soon, but I cannot resist to post a picture of the current paint status. I took the chance since the weather was really good today. Catch you all later of to the pub to have a pint [:D]

I am going to repaint my Skygate Hawk with this black color scheme shortly. The only real worry I have would be that the plane might get too hot in the sun. Then again, there is no sun in Ireland! [:D]

Before heading to bed, I screwed the wings onto the fuselage to see how they fit together. Well done, perfect fit! Next on the agenda is the wiring for the aileron and flap servos. I hope to receive all missing bits and pieces next week to keep going. I am quite happy with the progress now. Once the landing gear arrives, the wings are as good as done.

A preliminar fit on a plywood strip and some silver paint added: My future dummy exhausts. I'll rearrange them later to see how they fit in the cowl. I think it looks quite neat and also adds some weight to the nose [:D] The exhausts will not stay silver of course, adding a little black and dark red later on.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
While the epoxy sets in the servo bays, I took the chance and painted some interior green inside the flap's. The color looks weird on the picture. Will paint a second layer at some point later. Note - Not enough throw on the flaps might result in an uneccessary adrenaline rush during landing. Its imperative that the flaps have between 85 and 90 degrees travel.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
After removing the aluminium brackes from the mount, the mounts are glued into the bay with some thickened epoxy. The carbon cloth is still wet, which should promise a super strong glue joint! [;)]

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
As servo mounts I use aluminium bracktes with a plywood support structure. Those mounts will be glued into wing with epoxy later on. I prepared 4 of them. 2 ailerons and 2 for the flaps. Next step - adding some plywood strips for the cover.

Ailerons. I use double ball link horns for the ailerons as you can see on the picture. I didnt locate any pre-installed support wood in the hollow ailerons, so I decided to add some wood between the control arms. After some dreme'ling, its time to see how everything fits. As you can see there is a bit of sanding needed to get enough elevator movement with those horns.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
Alright, weekend is over and I got some stuff on the Spitfire done. Since I am still waiting on some parts to finalize engine installation I took the wing and worked on the Flap and Aileron linkages. Flap hinged with a fiberglass horn - Glued in with Hysol. Flap linkage will be completely hidden. Not that it would make any difference to a visible linkage since the radiator covers the flap servo spot anyways. [:D] <JC - I will mail you the measurements of the cowl as soon as I am done with the engine. Its still not 100% aligned yet. I hope to get this done during the week.

I agree bob, I was wrong on the manufacturer specs on the 1/9 F-15 - sorry for the confusion. Still i believe that overpowering a plane can result in pipe failure as well, which was all I wanted to say.
