RE: How Much Is too Much Internal Resistance?
Thanks, guver That's what I suspected, But I hate to throw away a battery. I'm going to change the prop in the planes that I'm using in the older batteries and reduce the pitch and diameter and see if the battery temps will come back into the 110 to 120 Degree range. If that don't work, Then i guess it's time for some new batteries. Thanks again J

How Much Is too Much Internal Resistance?
I have some Lipo's that are about 4 yrs old and I am charging them on a charger that can measure IR. I've noticed that lately when I get done flying that the battery is a little warmer than it used to get. It's still not to hot to handle,(Temps around 130 to 140 Degrees) But they all get warmer then they used to. They will all charge up to the correct voltage and seem to power the plane ok.( I could probably tell how much power I'm losing, By buying new batteries and comparing them to the old ones, But that's spendy). I"m wondering if there is a ball park figure concerning Internal Resistance, That I should look for concerning when a battery is past it's usefull life. I have batteries that range from 1 0hm to 60 Ohms resistance. I keep charts on all of my 4s and larger batteries and over time the IR has increased, But the time it takes to fully charge from a storage charge is about the same and the mAh returned to the battery is about the same. I have my timer set on my Tx, So that I don't exceed 80% discharge of the rated capacity of the battery. I realize that different makes of lipo's will react differently and The batteries that I'm asking about are Hyperion 3s 25c and 4s 30c LiteStorm VX and VZ series Lipo's. Any and all help with your experence in dealing with IR will be greatly appreciated J

RE: Airtronic SD 10 G charger- battery failure in flight
John, I received the twin output charger when I purchased a SD-6G. I also use it to charge my Tx SD-10G. When I sent my SD-10G to Airtronics for the new RF board upgrade, I also sent the original charger that came with the radio as I wanted them to check it and if it wasn't working correctly, To either fix it or replace it. I don't know what they did as there wasn't a explanation saying that they fixed or replaced it. The One that I received back looked exactly like the one that I sent to Airtronics. I primarily use the twin outlet charger, So that I can charge the Tx and The Rx at the same time. If Airtronics doesn't equip the later model SD-10G radios with the same charger that I received with the SD-6G, I think that they should. All of my "other brand" radio's came with a duel output charger. I'm going to include a photo of the two Chargers. J

RE: Airtronic SD 10 G charger- battery failure in flight
ORIGINAL: foxhills36 Anyone had an issue with charging their rx battery with the 10G charger? I lost my new to me plane last weekend after only 2 flights that day. These are the findings with the rx battery and charging. It was a 1650 MaH battery. I took the battery home with me and charged it overnight on my Digipace followed by a discharge and on my JR wall charger followed by another discharge. Both of these overnight charges showed more than 1500 MaH after discharge. I then charged for 24 hrs with wall charger that came with the SD-10G radio . 498 MaH were shown after discharge. I charged again with the Airtronics charger, this time for 48 hrs. After discharge, it showed 826 MaH. Any thoughts????
The Wall charger that came with my SD-10 was configured with one Output lead, So you could only charge the Tx battery. The Wall charger that came with my SD-6 is configured as a Duel Output charger, So you can charge either the Tx battery or the Rx battery at the same time. Output #1 is designated as the Output for the Tx Battery. 4-6 Ni-MH (4.87.2v) Cells charged @ 150 ma. Output #2 is designated as the Output for the Rx Battery. 4-5 Ni-HM (4.86.0v Cells charged @150 ma If you have a Airtronics Wall charger that has duel Outputs, You will be able to charge your Tx and Rx Batteries without any problems. If the charger only has one output, It will only charge your Tx. I bought my SD-10 when they first came out and some of the chargers that came with them were faulty, When Airtronics issued a replacement notice for the RF Board in the SD-10, I sent mine in and had the board replaced and the charger repaired and also had the sliders fixed. I don't know if the later model SD-10's came with the duel output charger or not, But you shouldn't have been able to damage your Rx battery with the Airtronics Wall charger. J

RE: New E.F. 48
ORIGINAL: viva_peru Hello, I just finished my Vanquish MkII and got a chance to fly it over the weekend. What a sweet little plane. I am using a Hacker A30-14L, a Hyperion 4S 2500 mah pack, a Castle ICE 50 and a 11x7 prop. With that set-up I am running about 39-40 amps and 550 watts or so. I was a little surprised by this since the Hacker has a lower Kv than the recommended Torque motor (800 vs 820). The plane flies well on that set-up, but it is a little fast. I could try a 12x6 prop, but on the ground, the watt meter was indicating about 650 watts at about 46 amps or so which is a bit much for the motor. This got me thinking that maybe I could fly on a 12x10 prop and 3S. Anyone flying this plane on 3S? I could also go up to a 13x10 as well. The reason why I am using a high pitch prop is to keep the pitch speed at 60 mph or higher. Thanks, Teo
Hi viva_peru, I'm flying my original Vanquish on the same motor, and I was using a 11x8e APC prop, on a 4s lipo, but I didn't like the way it flew, So I put on a Xoar 12x7 and it pulled 46A on my Watt meter. It will unlood some in the air. I have read that Hacker underrates their motors quite a bit. Using the 11x8, the motor came down just barely warm. I haven't flown the Vanquish with the Xoar 12x7 yet, but it should be ok, I'll know more after I fly it. We are entering into a low pressure weather pattern, So I don't know when I will get to fly the Vanquish again to test the new prop. You could fly on three cells and a 13x10 prop, but you will be down on power, If you have the battery and prop, you might want to give it a try. J

RE: Time to fly a Sequence. Do you record it? Intermediate?
When I fly the new Intermediate Sequence with my Osiris 62, I have the timer set for 5 min on my Airtronics SD-10G, I can complete the Sequence and make one knife edge pass across the field, land and taxi back to the pit and then my timer goes off. If the wind is fairly strong, I can still complete the Sequence, but don't have enough time for any more aerobatics. The timer will be going off when I start my landing approach. I fly a fairly tight pattern, and I like the way the new Intermediate Sequence flows, and It's fairly easy to keep every thing in the box. I estimate that my Osiris is flying at about 70mph. I may change the prop and go to a larger diameter with less pitch and see if I like the way the Osiris flys the Sequence with less speed. It should also give me more down line braking. J
ORIGINAL: Grex Im pretty new to the rc world. Ive been flying helis for about 8mths using an A9. My A9 went to radio heaven. Warning dont leave your radio lying around your workshop where you could accidently drop stuff on it breaking the screen, case..etc. Anyway, i need a new radio. The A9 is a good radio but im thinking I might try something different i.e. SD-10G. The SD10G seems to do everything extremely well and has competitively price Rx too unlike F*****. My only concern is that the radio looks HUGE. Unfortunately here in Australia the LHS dont stock SD10G - special order, so i dont have a chance to hold one before I purchase which frustrating.. I was wondering if anyone who owns a SD10-G can comment on its size and weight compared to the A9, 8fg or Dx7/8. If someone has photos that would be even better.. Cheers Grex

RE: Lew McFarland Passes on
I was flying a Lew McFarland Control line Stunt plane in the 60's called a Dolphin. I was going to build his Shark 45, But at that time I was also thinking about switching over to RC, So I never did get around to doing it. Both the Shark 45 and the Dolphin were well designed and good flying airplanes. Even tho I eventually went with RC, I still watch control line stunt planes when ever I see them flying. I flew Control line stunt from the late 40's to the mid 60's. I, for one, am greatful to Lew for the work and dedication that he gave to the hobby. He will be greatly Missed. RE: Blenderm
When I'm trimming the overlapping blenderm from the hinge gap, I use a really sharp pair of canopy scissors. I first make a small cut at the end of the over lap and then lay the scissor blades, which are slightly open, flush with the surface. Then while holding the cut end of the blenderm, I just run them along the edge until all the overlaping blenderm is cut flush with the surface. Works every time. J

RE: SD-10G Problem
ORIGINAL: MikeGreenshields Ok. Not sure why you can't get through. sorry for the hassle. In that you can't bind the to one receivers but another receiver works OK it's most likely the tx. And since the receivers don't even go into bind mode, there's something wrong at the recever end. The 7 ch rx and the 8 ch receiver have the plug oriented 180 to each other. So, you might try flipping the plug from the battery that's plugged into the receiver over (rotate 180 degrees) and try again. Mike
When I try to send a e-mail, The error message that I get is that there is a problem in the Set Associations Control Panel. I will have to check it out. I'm aware that the Rx plugs on the 7ch and 8ch Rx's are oriented 180 degrees to each other (I feel that Airtronics needs to make some improvement in this area) Over the weekend, I tried to bind the 8ch Rx again, It still wouldn't come on, after closer inspection, I discovered that the bind button was sticking. I gently pried the bind button up and then worked it up and down. I have some electrical contact spray cleaner, do you think that it would be ok to spray the bind button?. anyway I was able to get the Rx to bind after I was able to free up the bind button. I then tried the binding procedure on the 7ch and after pressing the yes button, the Rx continued to blink, it wouldn't bind until I pressed the end button. (Is that normal?) Anyway now both Rx's are bound to the SD-10G. For some reason all of my Rx's that were bound to my SD-10G before I sent it in for the RF Board update, lost bind with the Tx. Thanks J
ORIGINAL: MikeGreenshields Most likely you need to send it back. Please email service directly, ask for Chris, and tell him what you experienced. We can arrange to get your radio back and see what's wrong. But before we do, email or call service and let's see if there's anything that can be done on your end. For example, when you rebound, did you check to make sure the modulation setting matched the receiver type? FH1 or FH3, etc. service@airtronics.net If you have any questions you can message me too, however, I may be delayed getting back to you due to the AMA Expo this weekend. -Mike
Yes, I made sure that the Tx was in FH1 when I tried to rebind the Rx's. The Rx's wouldn't even come on, As soon as I released the bind button on the Rx, it would stop blinking. Both Rx's behaved the same way. But I had a new 7ch Rx that hadn't been bound to a Tx, so I tried it and I was able to bind it to the SD-10G. I think that If I need to send the Tx back to Airtronics, I need to send the Rx's as well. I flew both of the planes all last year without any problems. I wouldn't have known that I had a problem until flying season if I hadn't just bought a Hanger 9 Angle Pro and decided to check the throws on one of my planes. J

SD-10G Problem
I recently sent my SD-10G in for the RF board update. I checked it after I got it back and it seemed to work ok. Yesterday I decided to check the throws on one of my pattern planes, (I just bought a Hanger 9 Angle Pro) and the Rx wouldn't come on. (it's a 8ch) I then tried another pattern plane, (it has a 7ch Rx) and it wouldn't come on either. I had another 7ch Rx (it's never been bound to a Tx) that I bought the same time that I purchased my SD-6G. I hooked it up and bound it to the SD-10G and it worked. Any idea's as to what might be the problem? Do I need to send the Tx back to Airtronics? Thanks J
