RE: Tomahawk-Design Bae Hawk 1: 3.5
Scott I took a closer look at the baffling concept and thought about it some. In the early days of ducted fan - turbine airframe conversions I had the opportunity to test several airframes ( BVM, Jet Hangar, Avonds ). One discovery that we made ( the boys at RAM and GWM ) was that if you narrowed the inlet you effectively increased incoming air velocity and caused considerable turbulence in the fuselage. In some cases this was enough to cause the turbine to flame out between idle - 1/4 throttle. Granted, today we are talking engines that are bigger and have a much better combustion pattern than years ago. I believe that you have a solution to the gear doors but I would tend to place the baffles as far forward in the inlet as practical. Dean W.

RE: Tomahawk-Design Bae Hawk 1: 3.5
This is interesting. I have always had issues with open turbine install Panthers, Cougars and the like where it has been pretty well impossible to keep those inner doors closed. As I recall our engines only require 1 .5 times the compressor inlet area for air. As the models get larger the inlets ( scale ) also increase in size resulting in these increased fuse pressure issues. A full flow bypass reduces the pressure but can be a nightmare for installation purposes. This is very helpful information and is a very simple / practical solution...thanks Dean W.

RE: Ultra Flash ground handling
All stock set up on mine with CARF suggested gear. 5 degrees of throw on the nose with 30 % expo. Tracks fine. For those with bigger engines don't slam the throttle. Start the roll at 1 /4 throttle then as she begins to pick up speed, go to full power. Anyway....dozens of flights here and never an aborted one. Cheers Dean W.

RE: PST Panther advice
Two totally different aircraft. Having sold and flown many PST Panthers over the years I still remain impressed with the airframe. I currently have three. You cannot compare the UFlash with the Panther. Totally different designs and flight performances. Both will fly fine off a short strip with the engine you have chosen. As for quality, I must disagree with the posters statement. The PST Panthers are very well engineered and constructed for an Arf. I have an UltraFlash with a P100 so have direct experience. I do agree on the struts, they are scale as offered by PST and are not designed to take a lot of hard landings. Go simple with Robart. Any other questions just fire away.

RE: Ceramic Clunk v/s Felt Clunk
I and other jet modelers tried them many years ago and we all observed very tiny microbubbles in our largeer turbines. I stopped using them in an aircraft but I do use them in refuleing station. The felt clunk works amazingly well as long as it remains saturated. The only issue I have come across is that you need to clean your filters regularly as small microfibres accumulate downstream. Hi Galen Got the retracts in today. I will be going in for a little back surgery tomorrow so I will have some time to ponder the problem. I am quite sure I will be able to come up with some sort of mechanical door closure while lying in bed the next couple of days. I have put Chris on alert to come up with a laser cut package if needed < grin > Dean W.

Glad I found this thread. I have just received my TF 1/5 ARF F4U. Got the servos and the DLE 55. I spoke with the owner at JTEC and discovered that the part number did not match with what Top Flight recommended. JTec has a different number with a cost of arond $ 89. I start construction tomorrow! Dean W.

RE: Whats up with the JR obsession in RC Jets?
I don't have any issues. I use my JR 12X neck strap to hold up my Futaba 18mz when I fly my jets. Both work as advertised. No seriously....I have used both products for over thirty years and would not hesitate to recommned either one. True, in the early days of turbine flying the JR had some nicer / easier program features but Futaba has rapidly caught up in North America with features we jet guys like ( lots of channels, easier programming, tx battery life ). I have been using a 12x since they came out but found myself running out of channels ( big surprise to me ! ) and programming abilities, so I looked at the 18 mz. It works for me perfectly. I got to play with the new Spectrum 18 this weekend. Nice radio it would work too. Happy with both Dean W.

RE: C-ARF Ultra Flash build Thread + Video
Flight test followed up by 6 more flights this weekend on the UFlash powered by a JetCat P100. Plenty of thrust to fly around including verticals out of site. Aircraft cruises nicely at 1 /2 throttle allowing for nice 4 point / slow rolls strong entry into loops or split S. Inverted required very little down at 230 mm CG point. Dry weight of 22.3 lbs with the Down and Locked gear which also performed flawless. Comes in very slow with 80 mm flaps, 5 mm crow, 6 mm down elevator. Very impressed with the UltraFlash. Thanks Dave for the great thread and to Carf for the product Cheers Dean Wichmann Canada

RE: C-ARF Ultra Flash build Thread + Video
I'll post a picture after work today. I have the Behotec Down and Locked converted gear. The retract gears themselves have added no weight. The unit is powered by the ecu battery and the control unit weighs about 1/2 the weight of a servo / control valve combination. In reality, no added weight or in fact a slight reduction. It is not, IMO a significant difference either way. Dean W.

RE: Caution when shipping by Airlines
I used to do a lot of airline travel and brought my big box with me then..... After 2001 all the rules regarding luggage carried by the airlines changed. Though each airline has relaxed their policies over the years, the final decision is made by the customer service supervisor /manager AT THE TIME OF DEPARTURE. This is the case with most airlines in North America, Europe and Asia flying into North American airspace. ANY item that is deemed a safety risk to the aircraft, crew or passengers will not be allowed. There is a chance that your big box may be accepted but DO NOT EXPECT IT. Lufthansa is no different than any other airline when it comes to baggage policies. If you want to ensure your toy arrives at your destination ship it via freight well ahead of your planned arrival. Don't shoot the messenger...this is simply what has been told to me by various airlines ( Westjet, Alaska, AirCanada, British Airways, American Airlines, United Airlines ) Cheers Dean W.

RE: Behotec Nose gear problem
Stan A couple of things to check. Make sure that the cylinder body isfully screwed onto the frame. There is an O ring that seats and if it ispinched or not seated properly air will leak. Also be sure that the brass block at the end of the cylinder piston is moving smoothly. Check for any metal shaving, irregularities etc and that it moves from one end of the slot to the other. Also check that the gear is not hitting anything or getting caught up. Lastly make sure that there are no kinks to or pinching of the air line. You can do a simple test by placing your hand in front of the gear while it is rotating - the pressure against your hand should start to increase - this indicates good air supply. Dean W.

RE: C-ARF Ultra Flash build Thread + Video
Hi Everyone Just a cautionary note. The manual specifically refers to the upper main tank as having the center of the brass tubing at 125 mm from the end of the aluminum stopper back plate. On my tank this was 105 mm where the baffle was located. Regardless of the measurement given, ensure that the middle of the brass tube is located at the baffle position otherwise as stated in the manual the baffle will cut through the fuel line in no time. Visual checkis VIP ! Cheers Dean W.l
