RE: ZDZ 80RV New Carb
Never mind. In looking at it I would assume it to be the idle needle. It is tapered and would effectivley raise the low idle if we were to keep it intact for purposes of chainsaws and lawnmowers. In the case of R/C however that feature becomes redundant once the throttle mechanism is sheared and replaced with the control arm. Thanks

RE: K&B .65 Sportster
Hey Turbo, that is good to hear. I guess I will just keep working on her. Anything out of the norm like these other guys are talking about? ie. extra holes in the muffler, larger fuel tubing, pressure taps, low nitro, more oil , hotter plugs, cooler plugs, bigger props, sledge hammer(lol). Thanks, Mark Hey by the way, seeing as you said yours is 20 years old as well; is it the same.62 #5800 sportster like I have. MIne does not have the remote needle like the newer .65 Apparently K&B also recognized that the cooling fins were too aggresive in the earlier models like mine. The later models were machined down so the head could reach a higher temp. I guess this model engine would be considered an AAC ringed motor???? The Mecoa site explains the differances between the types of rings ,cylinders and materials used in the motors, but neglects to clasify any of the motors for the customer.

RE: K&B .65 Sportster
I took the carb off and gave it a thourough once over. The o-rings are in good shape. The elasticity is as if they were just out of the box. I am using 15 % nitro. A mix of synthetic and castor. I have tried med /cold plugs and hot plugs. No real big diiferance to note What seems odd is the low idle mixture. It is a screw that only turns 1/4 right or left. When I try to fine tune it the vibration does not allow for it to hold it's position. It always seems to creep back to neutral. Kind of like it is falling off a lobe. As for the idle set screw, well I just ignore it and use my tx to sort that out. This motor just seems to puke out so much oil. Everything is soaked by the time the tank is empty. The bushing at the front of the crank case allows for excess to leak as well. Unless it is running it really is a messy system. Man I can't imagine it in my nice clean fuse. I am realy close to ordering up an OS 55 ax. 4oz lighter and .7 more horse at 2000 more rpm. I just want to see this thing fly. It has had such a long history. The motor too. That is why I am really trying to get it sorted out. Once it has flown I will probably sell the motor and hang the plane up.

By the way I thought I should say.................. I can tune it to a really clean sounding pleasantly smoky mix. I can run it at what ever rpm I choose. It will run until the tank goes dry. No hesitations. The minute I try to transition , it's all over the place

RE: K&B .65 Sportster
I Have the same thing going on here. I really only fly large aerobatic planes for 3D and precision, however I have had this little mustang just waiting for flight now for 18 years. I have finally had to put this K&B sportster on a break in stand. I have been running it in for a couple of days now. 5 tank fulls. Just when I think it is too lean , it's too rich. When I think it is too rich it gets too lean. Damn this thing has a complex. I cannot seem to get it to more than just over half throttle. It seems to lean out but then mass amounts of wet smoke comes out, starts to choke so I cut the throttle , recover and try again . I lean it out get a little higher but then can't bring her back down without the low end seeming to have the incorrect mixture. Just rescently I have mounted several engines on airframes and was 3Ding them the same day. YS and OS to name a few. Will I ever trust this K&B to fly this plane??????????????? I have researched everywhere as to what this motor likes. Everything has been checked and double checked. This is a brand new 20 year old motor. Opinions PS. the tank was at the correct height in relation to the carb while running. The pic below was just at the time of being set up.

RE: So what exactly is building??
bull$%^it, ..................... My own father refuses to buy an arf. His enjoyment is the building of the plane. So much so that he really can't fly yet. never really cared to learn. I myself have built many planes too. My friends say I am rediculous. The planes I turn out should not be flown they say. Too risky to lose. Back in the day the arfs available were nothing more than cheap toys . Something else should be said for todays arfs. Many are beautiful. PLain and simply however they are practical. If we are speaking strictly of "scratch " built planes than there are differant matters to concern yourself with. Scratch built planes are always a gamble. Thousands of hours go into the production of one and yet there are never any guarantees of the fight quality. Kits are differant. They have been proven from prototypes. So really , for those of you out there who beleive you are purists, get a life. Who has the time any more. I'll gamble on the arf of my chioce. Take pride in a clean assembly and fly it hard. I will leave my ability to construct and build things for a day at work. Thanks though. To each his own. Give the non builders a break. Everyone has differant priorities. Mark

Agreed, and I want one too. The reason I stated the above was that I bought for example an H9 edge 540 (33%) It as to be a reletively inexpensive plane to be used as an introduction to large scale aircraft. I really should not lose sight of it as being so. It seems that every step is only a few hundred dollars more. Before one knows it hey are thousands over the original budget and experience level. plane=bigger motor=bigger plane=even bigger motor = holy !@#$ where does this ride stop

RE: Zdz 80 or BME 110/115
Ok so it is clear that from an economical point of view the bme 110 makes more sense if you are planning to go bigger. I think alot of people are. Kind of takes us full circle however. From reading other forums on this and other high performance engines, does a novice really have any other choice but than to take the neccesary steps to learn the principles of operation and tuning by starting with a less complicated system cost bedambed. This thread may have single handely sold more 110's to newbies sooner than they may have been prepared to do so. Any wonder why we hear of so many "baked and burnt" out engines. The fact is , aside from performance and cost, this is a pricey pastime. People still need to realize that it is like anything else in life. Steps need to be taken. The ladder has to be climbed. Just because you may have the money to have someone else build, tune and fix your planes, it isn't neccesarily true that you should really be there. I am a firm beleiver that to fly an rc plane you need to have built it. Sure would be cheaper to operate like this in all fascets of life. But that is not how it works. Start with a .40 and finish with a 200. By the time you get there you will be certain not to burn out that pricey investment. Truly , in the long run you will save frustration and money. Sure, gamble and it may work out for you. More than likely however gamble on the bigger motor prematurely and you will get burned! So really what is more cost efficient? Everyone is so concerned over price and performance. Bottom line, there are alot of newbies out there that are influenced by these threads. Nobody can forget the need to LEARN before anything else. I really do value the words of a few on this site. This thread in particular. I have no doubt that they are learned in this hobby. Make note I am not trying to stir the pot. Just an observation. Thanks

NEW H9 RELEASE! 3D BEAST
I hope I got your attention Mike. I know it may not be in the best interest of Horizon to realease any details of up and coming planes. With that being said however, I have a quick question for you. I am considering several differant planes being offerd by various companies out there. The thing is I really like the quality service associated with Horizon and the quality of the planes that are released. I have come to trust your planes. I know what I am getting into. I am really interested in a 260 and like I said there are a few already being offered. I want one now, however I would opt to wait if maybe something was in the works within th H9 line of 33%ers. What do you say? Any hints? Thanks, Mark

Hey guys , a really nice finish is an aluminum paint(not silver or chrome) Once the finish is applied steel wool it out (00) wipe it down to remove particulate apply water slide or vinyl cut decals then apply 2 or 3 coats auto motive grade clear cote. Wet sand with 8 -1200 grit and finally cut with compound and polish with 3m finishing cream. That sucker will look so authentically burnished you'll swear it had seen WWII. All the cuts from the steel wool make these very realistic refractions. Good luck

RE: New Hanger 9 Planes
Hey Mike, from a fellow who has flown both the edge and the extra in competition, which would you say is the better between the two 33's H9 is currently offering? I want it primarily for 3D however I do not wish to dial alot of bad habits out. IE pitch coupling in knife edge flight. I have rescently flown the new H9 260 and loved it's performance with a moki 210. 1/4 throtttle knife edge all day long with no correcting! I was impressed. I love the scheme of the extra 330 but have always liked the aggresive lines of the edge. What do you say to making an extra 260 in a 33% version with maybe a colour scheme like the 46% ultimate. The 260 seems like a good meld of the two. Anyways back to the main question: Extra 330 or edege 540 . I have heard that the 330 is a much better all round flier with no bad tendancies. Your opinion would be of great value. Thanks Mark

RE: Great Planes .40 P51 kit build...
Thanks guys. She has had major working done to her body. In a previous time I was in the Yahct building industry as a fibreglass finisher and painter. So she will definitely benifit from that knowledge. Luckily weight gain is negligeable. The plane is still around target weight. The engine unfortunately is not necessarily one that I would have great trust in. However it also is in it's original package from 18 years ago . The plane was built around it so in light of her story that will be the motor that will breath life into her. It is a K and B sportster .65 It will have a master airscrew 11x6. Wing loading will be up I am sure. Landing will probably be a little hot but I am hoping that with the thicker airfoil of this design, that I won't have any issues bringing her back. PS thanks for the "Welcome". I have been a long time member here but have not had alot of time to participate in many of the forums. I am a displaced "Cirkus" guy. Most of my discussion was on the Old Flying Cirkus site. Now the whole switch to the new Flying Giants site is just becoming familiar. Nice thing about RCU is that one can actually find threads on topics such as this pretty little mustang and not necessarily giant 3D machines. I am looking forward to this maiden! PS in responce to above post. Well At the time this plane was built I did not know anything about rc planes. Almost every conceivable filler has been used . Areas strengthened where not really needed. Paints which were not compatible with one another. By the way I will never useButyrate dopes again!!!!!!!!!!! One of the main reasons this plane took so long to complete was the fact that incompatibles were used along side one another. Differant shrink rates led to cracks. Perfectly good paint jobs were destroyed within months after completion. I was sick of all the sanding. What did I do I thought. Should have covered it I said. I hate building because I cannot let things go. I am a perfectionist so I had to strip it all down. Finally, I completed this yellow Rockwell scheme with Top Flite Lustre Kote. Goes on thicker than I would like . But there are tricks for that as well. My only regrets are that a few areas where incompatibility of earlier treatments are starting to haunt me again. Thank God Strategically placed decals hide blemishes. My buddies say I am over the top but I have a great vinyl cutter who does alot of my business signage. He loves the work he gets from dooing all of my RC planes now. Another "thank God"............... I love that good quality arfs now exist!

RE: Capx DA 50
Hey Flyboy, I ended up changing all of the original decals. I got my signmaker to get the vector files off of brands of the world .com All of my vinyls are official Brietling fonts. I also thought the red outline gave a little more something to the whole effect. If you notice, Chip had this and the Brietling wings logos on his prototype. Looks good I think. Only cost me an extra $60.00. The ones that come with the kit are pretty thin vinyl and they look hand cut. You also need to mask them in order to transfer them on to your plane. I too am just putting all of my parts together. Another winter project. mark

RE: Capx DA 50
Hey fly boy, I have been down this same road. No one answered this simple question for me either. As far as I figure, the standard will look the best. I know Chip and some others suggest the FAI but if you look at matt chapmans full scale cap you will notice how large and enlongated the spinner is in relation to the rest of the plane. Alot of other planes are starting to push the envelope on the spinner size as well. I think it looks cool. I went to alot of sites and finally settled on a 3" standard TRU TURN with custom slots and backplate prep for the DA 50. You just putting one of these together? I am I have noticed that there is very little info or threads on this particular plane. Mark

RE: Funtana90 video (Kyle)
Hey Kyle, Just wondering if you put aluminum servo arms on the 645's? Funny to hear of all the guys arguing about the 625 versus the 645's. If your video clip is any indication that .18 (645) is quick enough, than I think it is clear to go with the added insurance of the extra torque they have to offer. Just think of full deflection of those massive control surfices with the speed of say some coreless servo. If that was during level flight into a manouver like the wall for example, I would think the plane may blow to bits. That is like a dragster thrownig the choute at the end of the track. Kind of scary. I think I will stay with the 645's Your vid is proof .18 is plenty for speed. Mark

What servo did you use for the pull pull on the rudder? Anyone know if Kyle used three hitec 645's in the tail of his H9 funtana ys 120? I will be using a YS 110 as the 120 is no longer made. I was anticipating putting a couple onces in the nose anyways. At least the ys 110 cuts down on the need for lead compared to the recomended saito 100. Seemed to me as per the motor specs out there that suddenly (beyond the 110) that there is a significat weight penalty for the extra kick the motor offers. The ys 110 is as high as I think I will go.

RE: Funtana 90!
Your not kidding George. That wing tube is a real SOB. Got the wings on fine , but to remove them is an altogether differant issue. Hey here is a question for you guys. The gap at the wing root next to the fuse. Thinks one should make a silicone seal. Same way you would for a wing saddle. You know for keeping fuel from getting all over the inside of the fuse. One more thing, should the motor compartement be given a coating of fuelproofing? Or is what they already have sufficient? No mention of this in the manual. I am so used to doing this for scratch builts, but they make no mention if they have given that exposed wood a soaking with diluted resin/epoxy. Thanks for the advice, Mark
