RE: New Build - Dave Andersen Ki-45 Toryu
I always liked the Ki-45, along with many of the Japanese Warbirds. It would be a good stablemate to my 1:5.5 scale Ki-61, another Kawasaki product. I'll be interested in how it turns out. I think I'd have to break out the airbrush and go with the splotchy camo scheme.

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
Good luck getting your cooling working Mike. With my model I was lucky enough to be able to cut a hole in the firewall and use the oil radiator outlet to help. The main reason I can get it cool enough is that the head of the 1.60 is sticking out a bit, and it's a glow motor so running it a bit rich helps a lot. Too bad they don't make liquid cooled versions of some of these new gassers.

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
Here's a photo of the air outlet on my BF-109F. For something as heavy as yours you may want to add a spring loaded hinge on the door as we discussed since the door could not support the weight of the fuse. The spring would have to be pretty strong to make sure it doesn't close while flying. The flap hanging down should create a low pressure area that could help to draw the air through the cowl. The E model 109 did not have a very large opening, but there was a door of some type at the back. (see attached photo) In any case, it will look close enough and could help the cooling. You could also block some of the air coming into the front of the chin scoop, that way it would draw more air from the nose and past the engine.

Looks like the wind forecast is picking up for Thursday too. Good news though, Friday and Saturday look pretty good. Jeff, If you come down to the Davenport Scale Fly-in from Minnesota what do you plan on bringing? I plan on hauling my 86" Ki-61 to the event.

RE: Fly Eagle F-15 (1/9) Building Thread
My throws were more than I thought. Here's what I'm using. Ailerons: High 35mm, Low 22mm Elevator: High 60mm (all I can get) Low 50mm Rudder: 22mm Flaps: 45-50 degrees on full I have triple rates, so there is one in between. At high rate aileron is pretty hot, low rate is more normal. I use high rate elevator to take off and land, low to fly. Down elevator deflection is a bit less than

RE: Fly Eagle F-15 (1/9) Building Thread
I only have four flights on it, but was able to get two yesterday and start getting a feel for the best way to get it up and down smoothly. My early taxi tests indicated it was a bit squirlly on the ground. I had angled the gear out a bit to widen the track, but it still wanted to tip when steering. I slowed down the rate on the nose gear, and added a gyro to the nose gear servo. So far it has tracked straight on takeoff. It becomes important, because I crank up the turbine with the brakes on and let it go. I need to pick up plenty of speed to take off in less than 500 ft. Mine is quite heavy at a bit over 30 lbs dry. Another thing I did to help was I stiffened up the main gear. I found some fuel tubing the right size, and added it inside the struts to make them stiff enough that they would not compress with the weight of the plane when full of fuel. That also helped the ground handling because before making them stiffer it would want to roll a bit when steering compounding the poor ground handling. Once airborne I drop the elevator rate down a bit for flight. I go back to high rate on landing. Ailerons are quite responsive, so I found I can leave them on the lower rate (I still need to measure those throws). With the Jet Central Cheetah (31 lbs thrust) it is very fast. I only use wide open throttle a couple times on each flight. I haven't measured the speed yet, but I'm sure it's in excess of 170 wide open. For landing, it seems to slow quickly once the gear is up. I back of the throttle to burn off a bit more speed and add a bit of flap. It doesn't seem to need any more than half flap (about 30-40 degrees). I then feed some more throttle back in as it gets into a higher alpha attitude. It sinks fast, and you have to be quick to make sure you get a bit of flair right before touchdown. Once down the brakes are very effective and mine slows down in a straight line.

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
Your 109 looks great Mike. Hope you get it done in time for the Scale meet. I'm hoping to make it down if the wind finally dies down a bit and gives us a decent flying day.

RE: Fly Eagle F-15 (1/9) Building Thread
I think I had a bit more than that for my max throw, but after flying the plane found that the ailerons are plenty responsive. I would have to measure, but I believe I ended up at about 12mm up and 12mm down. Had a successful flight from my home runway last week. Here's a couple photos.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
We seem to have the spoilers / brakes discussion every time we mention them. Since we use them exclusively to create some additional drag, we often call them brakes or airbrakes in this thread to reduce confusion. Since I have a high pitch prop, I use them quite often. If I did not, I would most likely lock them level with the wing surface. They are not too realistic as I use them, most would agree that the spoilers did not move above the wing surface in flight modes and would go down with the flaps in most cases depending on the engine temp.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
In my case I set up the linkage for the "brake" to start moving more in the second part of the flap travel. My radio lets me know with a beep that I have hit the mid-point of the control (I use a rotary knob). I don't need full flaps (and full drag) when there is a head wind. Keep in mind I have an OS 1.60 with a 17X10 prop. It needs some drag to help it slow up, and the split flap/brake function gives plenty of drag, likely too much for some engine configurations. The instructions do show how to hook it up, but the length of the horns can determine when they kick in.

RE: DeHavilland Mosquito
I believe my retracts are Robart 700RS, and they did not have enough spring pressure to lock down consistently against the airflow. I had to add some extra external springs to get them to lock properly. Even though the 510RS are a bit smaller, they seem to have more powerful springs (I have a set on a Zero).

RE: DeHavilland Mosquito
I have the same robarts struts on mine. Only problem I have is that sometimes when you ground loop (as can happen with this plane depending on the wind) the forks tend to bend. I would like to strengthen them somehow but never seem to get around to it.

RE: DeHavilland Mosquito
I run Master Airscrew 11X7 props on my 46AX's. At half throttle it scoots along, and does not burn through the fuel so fast. I also found that the engines are happier and don't over-rev with the higher pitch props. Full flaps are required to slow it down on landing though. That's the biggest problem I see about two .91 four strokes, even at idle those big props will have a ton of thrust! I also have some side view photos.

RE: DeHavilland Mosquito
Mustang spinners look close enough for this plane, they're just a bit longer than needed to be perfect Mossy spinners. I'd be very careful about going much over 120mph with this plane. At high speed the rudder tends to go into a flutter. I have seen videos where the rudder flutters and detaches causing a crash. Mine has twin OS .46AX's, and if I go wide open with the nose down it will go fast enough to shake the rudder.

RE: Fly Eagle F-15 (1/9) Building Thread
I have an older FEJ, but the newer models have a stronger honeycomb construction that FEJ claims is lighter. The gear door pistons and landing gear are also improved over what was once provided. I would think the new FEJ model is a good value.

Thanks for the kind words, we were really glad you guys showed up. Because of the spotty weather we were missing many of the pilots from nearby towns who didn't want to make the trip to see rain. You guys really helped us by bringing your great stable of planes and contributed much to providing a good flight demo for the audience. I'll be posting a link with an event write up, and we hope to get a CD loaded with photos for all the pilots. Thanks again.
