RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?
Pattern and IMAC are the most Boring things .... to Watch. What pattern will teach you is Discipline. How to put the air plane where you want it when you want it, Not Helter skelter all ofer the place. A lot (most) Newbies and a lot of old timers are satisfied if they can get it UP and down without smashing it up. They don't really care if they hit the middle of the runway or not just so they can taxi back is good enough ... Well IN MY OPINION thees guys will always be Tipple P's Pis Poor Pilots. If you don't believe me just watch a person that's fly's Pattern or IMAC ... Their general flying is about 5 notches above the Average PPP. you know the guy that just Jumps in to the air , doesn't fly a pattern and just generally Banks and Yanks the plane all over the sky. So yes "Go For It" Get some discipline in your flying you'll be much better for it if not Bored to death with the repartition. But Practice makes perfect or just better.

RE: TOWER HOBBIES SUCKS
I call my local 4 Miles hobby House (not a good RC airplane) hobby shop and giv'em first chance even if they have to order it ... it got me 10% clube discount and no shipping over Tower Prices.. Other thing was they matched Tower price on $115 .75 Hitec item and had it in 3 days so yes I give my local hobby shop first crack. Now they will even go to other vendors they useally do don't do bussiness with for me.

Need to put some new batteries in my 35% YAK w/da 100 motor. The A123 batteries seem to be the newest technology but has anyone come up with a way to check them? Or do I need to look in another direction like Lithium Ion w/regulators? The transmitter also records the lowest and highest battery voltage for each flight. But I have switched to LIFE 2500 MAH 2 cell Zippy Bateries from Hobby King about $9.00 each.

RE: [Awaiting Approval]
The FAA is much more worried about FPV type flying than models in a controlled environment ... Our club has been flying on a private restricted airport 0WI8 for over 35 years with not so much as an incident or even a close call. The Pilot of the Full Scale BiPlane LIED about trying to land and then go around. He was making a high speed Smoke on LOW PASS, and furthermore when the BiPlane HIT the Model, the Model was on the other side of the runway.

Asubstantial number of unexplained crashes of radio control model airplanes on2.4GHz frequency prompted me to write this article on the so-called“interference free” radio control systems on the 2.4GHz band. The electromagnetic wave spectrum is subjectto the immutable laws of physics. Thepropagation characteristics of the 2.4GHz wavelength and the environmentaleffects of this frequency are more complex than on the 72MHz band. To better understand this, we have to look atthe electromagnetic wave spectrum where 72MHz band is in the broadcastingregion and the 2.4GHz band is in the microwave region. It is easier to see the huge differencebetween 72MHz and 2.4GHz frequencies when we convert 2.4 gigahertz tomegahertz. Now it is 2400MHz versus72MHz. When frequency increases, wavelength decreases. Therefore, the2.4GHz wavelength is shorter and closer to visible light on the electromagneticwave spectrum. Since visible light isalso an electromagnetic wave, 2.4GHz wavelength behaves more like visible lightand travels in straight lines until it is reflected, deflected, diffracted orabsorbed. Reflection and diffractionwill create interference. Whenparallel rays of light are reflected by a concave mirror, it greatly increasesthe intensity of light at the focal point. A parabolic dish antenna works the same way for a 2.4GHz electromagneticwave. Since we can not focus a high gaindirectional parabolic dish antenna between our constantly moving model airplaneand our transmitter, we have to use an omnidirectional vertical antenna systemwhich has much lower signal intensity. Interference The FHSS(frequency-hopping-spread-spectrum) and the DSSS(direct-sequence-spread-spectrum) techniques can share the same band. However, they interfere with each othercausing a degradation of performance. Range decreases as the number of clear channels decreases. Bandwidth drops each time FHSS encounters ablocked channel on a crowded spectrum. The crowdedspectrum on the 2.4GHz band reduces the bandwidth, increases the ever presentbackground noise, increases the adjacent channel leakage ratio, reduces the range, and causesoverlapping. Overlapping is a direct interference. Unlike the72MHz wavelength which penetrates most objects, the 2.4GHz wavelength behavesmore like visible light. Signalabsorption from objects on a model airplane like the engines, electric motors, batteries, servos, pushrods, landing gears, switches, wires, etc., may causepath interference. Signalreflection from objects in the terrain, like fences, walls, buildings, trees, hills, power lines cause line of sight interference. High speed data transfer reduces thereceiver’s sensitivity on 2.4GHz band. There is a trade-off between speed versus range. The signalstrength decreases quadratically as distance increases at constant radiationlevels. This is called path loss. When frequency increases, path loss alsoincreases. This is one of the reasonswhy 72MHz radios have a better range than the 2.4GHz radios. We can see this clearly when we look at theWireless Range Calculator: Frequency Distance Loss 100MHz 0.2 mile 62 decibel 2400MHz 0.2 mile 90 decibel 2 of 4 These calculations are under non-existing ideal conditions, less Fresnel (pronounced Frehnel) effect. When we flyour model airplane on 2.4GHz, the area around us is known as the Fresnelzone. Since we have to use anomnidirectional antenna system, the electromagnetic waves will scatter and diffractfrom objects and from the terrain around us. When the diffracted wave reaches the receiver antenna, it is slightly lagsbehind the signal which traveled to the receiver antenna in a straight linethat creates interference due to thephase canceling effect. The Fresneleffect also deals with the behavior of electromagnetic waves over a watersurface. As mentioned before, the 2.4GHzradiation behaves more like visible light, so we have to think of reflectionsand shadows. Flying a 2.4GHz radio controlmodel over a reflective surface like water, snow, ice or wet terrain negativelyaffects the radio link. Occasionally a3D aerobatic model plunges into water while hovering. When the rudder is near the water surface, the prop wash creates a chaotic wave pattern which generates a myriad offalse-signals. The Fresneleffect and the described interference on the 2.4GHz band work pretty well. We successfully tested this at differentlocations. Unfortunately, the“unbreakable Tx-Rx link” broke when our model was over 0.2 miles away at 45degree angle. Despite the fact that a 90decibel signal loss over a thousand feet (0.2 miles) is rather significant, weshould have had control at this distance. There are too many factors that can determine the overall range on2.4GHz. 2.4GHzreceivers are not immune to ignition and electrical noise as advertised. Occasional arc from high tension insulatorscould break the bind. Latency Latency isthe time between stimulation and the beginning of response caused bypropagation delays. There is a huge timedifference in latency claims by different radio manufacturers. Some latency claims are in milliseconds, others are in microseconds! This isconfusing since one millisecond is one thousandth of a second and onemicrosecond is one millionth of a second. Velocity ofelectromagnetic waves is 186,283 miles per second. The velocity of the electric signal throughconductors is nearly at the speed of light. With an adequate power output, our radio signal will travel onemicrosecond which is one millionth of a second to reach our model airplane onethousand feet away. This applies to allbrands of radios on 72MHz or on 2.4GHz. As we know, nothing travels faster than the electromagnetic waves. Therefore, I don’t see how latency could beimproved “50 %” over the leading competitors regardless of differentprocessing. A sevenmillisecond latency or a fourteen millisecond latency claim is irrelevant sincethe human being, the RC pilot, has a painfully slow 200 millisecond latency andcan not differentiate between seven or fourteen milliseconds. Conclusion At huge events, like Nationals, the 2.4GHz pin-free radio system makes life easier forcompetitors and organizers. However, there is a huge difference between flying on 2.4GHz band in the beautiful countryside near Muncie where chances are good that there won’t be any 3 of 4 noticeableinterference and flying on 2.4GHz band in the middle of one of the largestconcentration of population and industries in Los Angeles or other urbanareas. 2.4GHzradios under harsh conditions work most of the time, however most of the timeis unacceptable. Illegal signal boosting, ham radio, and rolling hills further aggravate the situation. 2.4GHzwavelength has much higher incurred losses than 72MHz wavelength. Therefore, when it comes to range, the 100mWRF output on 2.4GHz radio is no match to a 750mW RF output on 72MHz radio. When out of range, error correction, uniqueGUID code, and the “robust” pseudo-random control sequence will do no good. In any case, we should hold on to our assigned frequencies on 27MHz, 50MHz,and 72MHz bands. Despiteglowing reviews, the so-called “bulletproof 2.4GHz technology” has range andreliability problems since day one. Abench test inside a building in a controlled environment where the receiver isa few inches away from the transmitter is meaningless. 2.4GHzwavelength is not the best choice to control model airplanes. Furthermore, we have ended up with complexradio systems on an overcrowded band on the electromagnetic wave spectrum. The bottomline is that glitch-free software, error-free computers, and aninterference-free radio link is only an illusion. RE: LiFe or Lipo with regulator??
Short story ... Monday a club member had just gassed up with Gasoline and filled his Smoke tank of his giant scale Cap 232, with his concoction of transmission fluid and something else. This was back out of the pits more where the cars are parked. I was just standing there as was he and all of a sudden there came a wisp of smoke from under the smoke tank where it turns out a large NiMH battery was wrapped tightly in foam. (He had just charged all night before coming to the field). Then it stopped for a few seconds, then got worse. the smoke tank was secured with 3 black tiraps to the plane. Well he grabbed the tank and ripped it out by the roots taking what ever it was secured to. Then the smoke seemed to subside for a second time. Went to pull the battery out and it was hot enough to slightly burn his fingers. Got the battery out finally and he had taped the connection so had to acquire a knife to get the battery unplugged. After unplugging the battery and starting to unwrap it it started to flame up. He through it away from us and it proceeded to consume it's self in flame. Might have been a whole different story 5 minutes later when he would have been up in the air. So much for nice safe Mimh batteries.

RE: LiFe or Lipo with regulator??
ORIGINAL: airraptor I will never use A123's. to me A123's are the same as DA engines lol they get the job done but so do LiFe and DLE engines at a reduced price. My Opinion Now all i use are the Hobbico and Hyperion LiFe batterys. They out perform the Nicad and NiMh batterys. they are half the weight and have the same Mah rating. What you need to pay attention to is the C rating of them. some of the Hobbico LiFe batteries only put out 1C some are over 10C. Onother thing i dont like about the A123's are they only come in one size and they weigh more. I have crashed a couple of LiFe's at over 140 into the ground and the battery was crushed and split open. it was mounted behind the engine, reciever, servos, fuel tank and wing mounting block. it ripped through all that. It didnt catch fire or even get warm.Hope your 140 crashes wern't because of th poor High Current out put of LiFe's ... True A123's will out put much higher current. One problem (OH but a small problem if U properly document flight times and charges) is that it is hard to check the remaining (CHARGE) in this type of cell. This is because of the very flat but long working voltage. ie they fall off very quickley near the end of their charge. Telemetry that would mesure the consumed MiliAmps might be nice. Just my 2 cents worth. I have HV serovs also on most planes now and still use the LiFe batterys. IMO for todays tech its the only way to go.
100:1 ?????? the Spectrum 5i's and 6i's are introductory beginner radios. They even use Alkaline batteries. Many cheep toy airplanes come as "Bind and Fly" with Transmitter included for first time RCer's or Bind and Fly because someone has already perched a cheep starter plane and doesn't need another Transmitter. It's Throwaway airplanes that have spread the use of the spectrum brand of lower end of RC radios. It's the same thing Apple tried back in the 90's ... give schools a breack on computers and childern will want Apples not IBM's Well ya see how far that went .... Apple has 6% of the computer market. No mater what U say DSM2 is still a Old Technology When using the older receivers.

Figure if a person has to plug in wing, flap, and gear servos why not all connections. All 3 receivers and battery packs have Velcro on them for quick removal and instillation. This way I figure I saved about two Grand because I have over 25 planes from a .46 U-Can-Do to 100 and 125 size nitro war birds and 87" G-64 powered P-47 and 87" ZDZ 80 Twin Yak 54. Try it it works well. Just remember to change the Transmitter to the proper plane. Spectrum Users will have to ReBind. Another advantage U have only 3 battery packs to worry about.

RE: Spectrum receivers
ORIGINAL: opjose
ORIGINAL: radius1x1 Does the sale of orange rx's have ANY added value to our economy at all, or does it go straight to China? Follow the money!!! At least when you buy a Spektrum product, we as a country get a few crumbs and jobs!!!!
Well yes it does. For one, I can afford to equip more planes with Orange RX's than I can with Spektrums, so I utilize more glow fuel sold, package, transported and manufactured here. Given my last purchase of 16 gallons, that's more U.S. "crumbs" than what stays here with the Spektrum purchases.
It's a world Economey ... It was OK when the USofA was on top of the World ... Now it looks like it's someone eleses turn ... Get used to it... Our Governer Walker here in Wisconsin thinks everyone should work for Slave Wages, and people don't have the right to colectively bargin. What makes a politicin worth more than soee one that produceses something or teaches your childern.
