RE: Extreme Flight 88
Quick question: Are you guys running the plastic louver that comes with the kit in your cowls? Mine is getting all chipped and not nice looking and I was wondering if removing it would cause any adverse flight characteristics or if i should just leave it. Thanks!

RE: DA / DL observation
Recently coming into the gas engine size range on aircraft, I was torn between either a DLE or DA engine for a 50cc class airframe. I only ended up with a DA b/c i bought a turn key package. I will, however, say that I have seen many DLE's run alongside my DA and many other pilots DA's and they all run well. If someone hadn't told me what was under the cowl, i wouldn't have know the difference. IMO, get either engine, run a quality oil at an acceptable mixture, cool it properly and just fly. \ Also, It was nice to read what T.O.M had to say about engines. Lots of good info inside that guys head

So, for those of you running a pipe, which pipe are you running? I'm thinking it's about time I pipe my yak. I'm currently running a DA50 on stock muffs and I'm looking for a little more oomph.

RE: Hovering Help!!
its all about practice. you need 3D rates and to burn lots of gas. you may consider propping the engine differently. also, holding right aileron to stop the plane from torque rolling will help and don't use huge movements of the sticks. only correct what needs correcting. too much stick movement will cause an over correction and then things can get out of control quickly.

RE: Battery question?
ORIGINAL: rcplanenut
ORIGINAL: hanko Bad, Bad, Bad, stupid idea. whats the sense? I see absolutly no advantage to that. That must mean your still using 4.8 nicads or NMH's. or putting a reg in line with ignition, another silly idea
Why do you see this as a bad idea, have you tried it? I can think of a couple of advantages like a simple set up, lighter and only 1 battery to charge. This is a small plane so I don't see the need for redundancy.
Just because it is a smaller plane doesn't mean there isn't a need for redundancy. To be on the even safer side, you could run a seperate ignition pack and receiver pack. The weight difference would be negligible and the complexity wouldn't change.

RE: Battery question?
Not worth it in my opinion. If your battery fails (which can happen), you lose everything. If you run seperate packs, and your ignition pack fails you can still land. I also run 2 packs which you could do on a 30CC w/o worrying about weight. I would run 3 1100 A123's. 2 r/x and 1 ignition. boom done easy finished

RE: Extreme Flight 88
I'll have to agree with everyone on the thing CA-ing EVERYTHING. I happened to overlook (i forgot [:@]) to do it and prior to flying this weekend thought i'd go over everything. Good thing i did. My canopy blocks with the blind nuts were wiggling loose along with another piece of the canopy wood. Couple joints where the canopy sits were a little loose and a few other minor things. I took a good 30 minutes and went over every part of the plane with thin. In my mind, a bottle of thin CA is a lot cheaper then a new airframe.

RE: Is Chief the only distributer for Pilot in the US
I think it's because theres little interest in 33% airframes (for 85CC class engines). More people would rather the 35% range. From what i've been reading, Pilot airframes come in fairly light so you might be able to get away with an 85 in it

+1 for the A123's. So easy to plug them into my cellpro4s and @ 4A done within 10 minutes. I also run redundant packs on the r/x just for safety. I never did it on my smaller aircraft but I just would hate to see 3 grand flying helplessly into the dirt because a switch failed or something stupid.
ORIGINAL: Slow and Steady I was intending to use 2 Life 7.4 2100 mah batteries in my yak until I weighed them. Each is 4.5 ounces. However, I will be using a battery eliminator, which will save the weight of the ignition battery. Any thoughts or experience regarding the reliability of the battery eliminator? Haven't noticed anyone on this blog using one.
I don't like those battery eliminators. If you ever end up having engine problems, it could cause a huge headache. I'd just go the route of each of the 2100 packs into a switch into the receiver and then have a seperate ignition pack and switch. I wouldn't leave something as vital as an engine ignition to a module like that.

RE: Extreme Flight 88
Speaking of maintenance, have any of you guys ever had the trailing edge stock start lifting off the ribs? I was looking at one of my wing halves and noticed that about 6 inches (2-3 ribs worth) of trailing edge stock was lifted off. I have yet to open it up and see whats wrong but it seems like the glue joints just broke. Hopefully it isn't anything major. Oh, and about those baffles, mines starting to come off of my cowl in some places. Would some medium CA be good for holding it back? I guess after a summer of flying it's just time to sit down and really work on it before the good fall flying weather comes in! [:-]

Joe, Thanks. I for sure know my spinner weights more. It is an unlightened tru-turn spinner. I'm going to check my CG later this evening after work and see where it is. I may end up moving one of my receiver packs to a location similar to where your receiver is.

Standard DA muff Dubro 20 oz tank 2 2300 A123 on r/x 1 1100 A123 on ignition At least thats the larger moveable stuff. I have most of it by the wingtube and it does IMAC stuff VERY well and flies VERY straight. I've been testing and have about 2 Oz in the tail and its a little better in 3D. I figure moving 1 of my 2 batt packs would make it nice

RE: PeakModel 30% Yak54 Version 3. Help me on my first build please.
Most giant scales come with right thrust built into the firewall. Just get a template for a DA50 or Dl55 (same mounting pattern) and drill it. Also, you may need to open up the hole in the firewall to allow for the throttle servo linkage to fit and what not.
