RE: Nitromodels PREDATOR RQ-1B
Hey Cobra, I have had mine for sometime and I am finally getting around to the build. I installed a towerpro A24-09-18 1000kv/180w and a 25amp towerpro esc from Hobby City. Actually I bought everthing I needed from them to complete the build. I used 3 X 18 inch Servo extensions. 2 for the Alierons and one for the ESC. I mounted mine in the back and ran the extension up forward through the fuse. You will need a Y- connector as well. I changed the wheels to 2 1/2 inch foam. Had to make a new front landing gear as the one I got had a coil into it and would not let me add a larger wheel. I fly in fairly rough terrain at times. Changed my wings so they are removable using the ideas posted earlier. Pretty crappy instructions, sure glad papajeff did a build thread. I also think they changed the model a bit because when I cut out underneath of the wing mounts it was just covering and no wood, as well as the front landing gear. Anyone doing this with no experience and just using the manual would be in a bit of problem. Also my fuse did not have cutouts for the servo wire to exit from the wings. Quick fix with a sharp #11. As far as the esc to lipo I used what I had on hand and it is very close to the battery leads at the esc. 24 inch would give you plenty. Kevin

Received a nice package on Friday from Fedex. A bit of damage on the fuse, but not to bad. Looks like a nice kit. I will be using some of the mods by papajeff to complete it. ( nice name by the way, I am known as papakevin). My 6 year old grandson who I am hoping to get into RC as well. He already has a air hogs heli and a RC atv which I had to buy him. He has a sharp eye and never misses anything new on my shelf. Nice pics War-bird Dave. I was curious as to what the fellow at the field said after you flew the predator. Kevin

brownlab , I assume you have all of the electronics from the predator and the radio buy yourself a multiplex easystar. It is an excellent flyer and very very tuff. About $52.00 Better check out the tanks as they do not normally come euipped to shoot BBs. A pellet or BB gun works much better for hunting. Kevin

RE: Nitromodels PREDATOR RQ-1B
Papajeff, I have a video system from Future hobbies. I initally had a 2.4ghz but have switched over to spectrum radio. Because of that I returned my 2.4 mhz and swapped it out for a 900 mhz system. specs : PRODUCT DETAILS: 12VDC System Operation Operation channels: 0.910-0.980-1.010 & 1.040 KX-131 with 3.6mm lens 900MHz 12v-500mw transmitter 900MHz 4 channel receiver w/ Li-Poly battery System harness with gold pin connectors 600mAh Li-Poly battery Audio: upgradeable with system harness Dongle style antennas for RX & TX RCA Cable Battery charging cable Receiver AC charger Onboard weight: 7 ounces I also have a set of video goggles and plan on flying via FPV ( First Person Video) eventually. I have been following the threads over at RC Groups for quite a while now but have yet to attempt it fully. Flying with an easystar for now. brownlab, read your posts and I am sorry to hear about your mishaps. You must realize that in anything you do it takes time to get good at it. In rc flying you eventually have to crash, it is all part of the learning curve. The best pilots in the world crash. I have crashed my planes and my helis and my boats. I do not have any buggys but friends of mine do and they crash them all the time. Being 12 years old and getting into rc flying is great. Certainly not to young to start. There is a five year old that flys helis as good as the best pilots out there and he has a brother at 3 who can fly a plane just as good. Remember patience is the key and as papajeff said never give up but if you have to step back a bit and start again that is what it is all about. If we were all great at everything we did right off the bat then things in life would be very boring. Firebird or something similar is an excellent platform to get back into flying. Do a bit of research before buying as there are many good planes to start flying with. I think we get caught up in what really looks neat and not what is practical especially when starting off into a new hobby. Kevin

Just placed an order for a Predator after reading through the thread as well as an email from Nitromodels. Looks like a great flyer for airborne video. With the weight problems aft and having to add some lead, I am hoping my wireless videio system will compensate nicely. Nice writeup papajeff with some really good upgrades on the build. Kevin

RE: Cut the plug off of the charger?
This is what I did to eliminate the connector from DF. I just removed the battery plug and soldered on a male Deans Connector with a length of wire. With this setup I can use my batteries on all of my toys. This way you do not have to change anything on your charger. Also having a longer lead makes it easier to connect and disconnect the battery without worrying about the board as much. My appolgies for the fuzzy picture but you get the idea.

Slider, thanks for the input. I had to do a redo on the paint scheme. Someone pointed out to me that I did not have the paint job as per the real heli so I had to do a bit of a repaint to correct it. No problem the krylon paint covers very good. Having a bit of a time tinting the windows. I wish darth would make the petg plastic tinted already, but I suppose there would be people who would want it clear. Kevin

Here is a picture of a bell ranger from http://darthdrk.4t.com/. Mine is a Trex HDE . Just started a couple days ago. Hardest part so far is taking your time when cutting out the window openings. Darth, makes excellent quality fuses. You can also check out www.funscale.com He has a really good build on the jet ranger along with some good vids of flying. Kevin

RE: Boothbay Oyster boat
Tug, if I understand you correctly the area you will out the holes is quite a bit aft. I don't have my drawings but I would make sure that the area you put the shot will go in the space between the frames where the large elipical hole would be. To far back aft on your weight might be to much in that area which could put your stern down quite a bit. Experiment with your weight load on deck before drlling and gluing. If you wanted to spread out the weight a bit try putting the shot in a couple of small zip lock bags and lay them on the deck. This might give you a better weight distribution to experiment with. It is a great little boat to drive and I have even put a small wireless camera in mine to get the view from the cockpit. I also put on a brass prop and it cuts through the weeds much better than the plastic. Kevin

RE: Boothbay Oyster boat
ORIGINAL: Tug Guy LTDoc every little bit of info helps. I made one error on this model, I made it too solid. My main deck is my only deck and is 3/16" ply.The frames glue to the deck sealing in the area between frames. I will either have to use the resin/shot combo and disguise them as deck ornamentation (boxes, tubs) or I will have to make a thin box almost the full width of the hull. I have a rudder servo sitting on one side under the transom hatch so there isn't much room for ballast. Here is a weird thought that just struck me. Drill a hole in the deck very near the transom on either side of the keel. Then insert a balloon in each hole and add the shot. Once I got the right amount of shot I could add resin into the balloon then seal off the holes. Good idea or bad? Tug
Tug, I also ended up putting on my main deck before ballasting so I used the template on the plans to find the center of the elipical holes. This space is blocked off fore and aft by frames. I used small containers placed on the main deck and filled them with the shot and kept adding to these until she was balanced. I then drilled two small holes about 3/8 dia on each side and slowly poured the shot in each side until I was happy with the weight. I then poured the glue (can't remember but I think it was weldbond or something similiar that poured very easy and then i just kept rocking the hull back and forth until there was no movement of the shot. I then used silicon to fill the holes and make it water tight. You could cover the holes with small wooden disks to look like access ports. Or like I did with my deck box covering the holes. This is the only place that I had to use ballast. My rudder servo is in the front under the main cabin. The same place as the motor and batteries. Kevin

RE: Boothbay Oyster boat
Tug Guy, here is a good site for info on the build. http://www.rktman.com/rlh/boothbay/steps/steps.html Try and put everything on that you will be using and then set up your ballast. AS best you can at least. I placed small containers on the deck and filled them with shot until close. Then I just added to the shot to the hull until i was happy with the ballast. It did not take a lot of shot. I used some old lead shotgun shells and cut them open. It was cheaper and easier than trying to buy a few ozs of lead shot. My main batteries and in the front cabin either side of the motor next to the hull. I just used the recommended batterys and motor by mid west in their instructions. Just remember the lower the weight is in the boat the better the stability. Kevin

RE: Boothbay Oyster boat
Tug Guy, They are under the main deck and are used for putting weights (lead shot for ballast). I built one last year and I put the main deck on before I had it properly weighed. I had to drill two small holes in the area of the elipical holes in order to add the shot along with glue to keep the shot from moving around. The holes are hidden because I also put in a diesel sound maker and it is in a box on deck which covers the holes. Kevin

RE: Draganflyer to laptop
SkyHigh, I have no idea what the res is. It has two mode for recording SP and LP but none of the specs give anymore info. Manual or website. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=pvr1000&cm_mmc=geekmail-_-newarrivals_html-_-13aug05-_-naproduct That is where I bought the unit and anywheres else it is $200 US. I guess that is why they are out at the moment. I have a vid camera but it doesn't have vid input and with all the other toys I have been buying this was a cheap alternative. I also bought a camera system from microwireless.net. It is called the video pod. Nice compact and portable system so I can move it to my other RC toys. I am only using the system for having fun recording and the quality so far seems fine. I haven't used it a lot because I bought it in late fall and finally the weather is starting to be nice enough to fly here. I put in a 1GIG sd card so I can get lots of recording time. I will post some when I get a good vid. Hunter

Check out the PVRs that are out there now. I bought one from computer geeks a while ago for $75 US. It takes a SD card and will record video. The one I have is Audiovox 1000. There are lots of these types of PVR out now so the prices are dropping. Certainly cheaper than a camcorder and as portable.

RE: I broke my camera
phover, That is to bad about your camera. Like you said especially when it was not from a crash. I have dropped mine a few times and so far I have been lucky. I also have a camera system from http://www.microwireless.net/. Has battery combined internally so no wires to get in the way. Makes it easier to put on different machines. Nice system and the price was good. It comes with a mount but I have used a modified version for mine ( lots of elastics) for now. I also bought their wireless video receiver which is good for short range flying. I have hooked up my CCD camera from my DF on to my Trex which I just built and will fly it tonight at our indoor fly using the 9 volt battery connection. I use a Audiovox PVR for recording with a 512MG SD card. Gives me lot of recording time in a small portable package. Kevin

DF on Discovery Channel
I was watching Discovery Channel Daily Planet last night and they had a five min spot on the Draganflyer. It was an interesting segment showing the new camera mode as well as the DF using red blades. A small interview with Zenon and a bit of indoor flying that was unreal. But then again if you own the company you better be good at flying. The flying and video were both excellent of course. They also were flying outside with the wind chill at -43 C and all worked perfectly, at least after the editing for the show. Watching them fly is amazing because I still am a lot more cautious when I fly. But then again my mistakes cost a lot more. Hi Guys, I also have an Ecilpse and it is new to me. Bought it to fly a variety of machines CP, Draganflyer, T-rex and a fixed wing when I learn how to fly one. I strated to set up the ecilpse for the blade and found I had to set the throttle curve start at 0 in order to get the 4 in 1 to arm properly. Set up the EPAs to 85 % Used the rest of Fred's setup to start with. Haven't flown it yet, just bench tested it, but will report on any findings.
