RE: Byron/Century Jet retract Drop in replacement
Rick - Go for it! You will like the airframe - good flyer. Make sure the tail is sturdy enough to handle high flight loads with a modern engine. The original Nosen design has very light elevators. Be careful - I know from experience. I have Sierra gear in my latest one, and they work great. You will have to design in your own retract rails. Current one from our updated plans, and one of my old ones from the past.

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
A stellar day ! 6 am .. my FIRST granddaughter was born. WOOT !! Hospital in the morning... then the new momma needed some rest.. sooo .. off to the field of course. Great weather. Wow, what a great day so far !![:D] Before I head out, I do a serious once over on the airframe after the first 2 flights.. and identify a couple of items that I missed before... tailwheel is not staying centered... need to pull the lower cowl and tweak in the needle a bit since it was rich. Double check the airlines after repair last night. Stuff like that... Then I check all the servos.. oops, what's this? Hmm, rudder servo has a slight "miss" in one spot? Gears stripped on the 4721. Seems when the tailwheel lost air pressure, the rudder hit the ground. As I taxied it back not realizing this.. must have damaged it then. No big deal, replace the gearset, good to go. Also check the engine to make sure the muffler, mounting, and linkages are all still tight. All good. Now to the field! Set up, fuel up, air up.. off to the flight line. Takeoff normal [good!] fly around a bit, listen to the engine with the new needle settings... engine is no longer rich and running well. Good. Start to wring it out a bit.. high speed testing.. no flutter. Good. Do some warbird aerbatics. All good. Then . . See one of the innner gear door open again? Just like yesterday? Hmm, I fixed that! Or so I thought. losing air! Cut throttle, hit the gear switch... thankfully, the mains come down.. line it up, bring it down. Won't slow down.. seems the leaned carb settiing has increased the idle speed. However, the large flaps slow it just enough, and it's in. Lands really well in fact, nice wheel landing. Oops, can tell the tailwheel is not working again. Shut it down when it stops. Test air system, like I did last night.. hear a large leak? After some checking with friends, it seems the inner gear door lines are getting pinched during assembly, not after assembly, during. I had insured the lines were OK when assembled, but missed the fact I was damaging them while sliding the wing into place. Time for flight number 4 now.. Fuel, air up, takeoff.. all good now! Kinda have some fun with it.. oh yes, it's a keeper flight wise... again can't get it to idle down as mush as I like, and the runway contruction peels a wheel off the rim. No big deal really. The plane is flying well, just like my other onwes, but now with all the updates we put in. So - plane is basically tuned in, ready for the season. Build closed ![;)]

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
OK - took the Mustang to the field today .. Decent weather, a bit windy, but pretty much down the runway, so what the heck. Assemble the plane, Ooops, forgot the prop and spinner bolt. Go get that... Pump up the retracts, flip it over.. and add some fuel. Radio check, check, Cotrol throws and direction check? Check, Battery check, check. Choke on, flip flip.. pop! Good. Choke off, flip flip.. running. Set a few things on the throttle .. still need to tweak the expo curve a bit, but running well, aliet a bit rich. Check. Put on lower cowl... top off the air.. and away we go. Taxi some, OK. Line it up on the runway.. add power.. and she's off! Easy run, off in 40 feet. Retracts? Check. All gear door work as planned... get some altitude, check. Plane is tracking well... two clicks of up, good straight flight. No aieleron trim needed. Check. Fly around for a bit, do a roll... all seems OK. Good! Engine is definately rich, but plenty of power for flight. Actually have not weighed the aircraft yet, but must be pushing 35 to 37 lbs? Make a low pass for teh cameras.. check. All good... let's land. Always fun, that first warbird landing.... slow it down, add flap.. oops, add flap ?? Hmmm, no flaps? Darn it. So, line it up, slow it down, here she comes.... a little hot, keep it that way to ensure control throw authority. Also choose the grass as the runway is under pending construction. Roll out, all good. We have a test flight! Turns out I was clicking the wrong switch for the flaps.. oops. Flew it again, but having some air line leakage after the first flight. Get a good flight in, then notice one of the inner gear doors open?? Hmm, why< Drop gear... add flap - and wow, the are effective! Landed at a crawl, very stable and predictable. Now need to find that leak and then try it again tomorrow. A few pics from today, George took some video.. will post that when available.

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
Update 2: 3 days later, after cooling my jets and thinking on it.. fix stuff, remount for another test run. Have buddy come over to assist. Still a backfire? But, the engine starts and runs. Do the basic needle adjustments.. all seems better now. Hmm, good! Planning a test flight tomorrow.. Sat, 13 mph winds, 79 F, sun, Time to go !! Still have to reinstall fuel tank, but that "should" go OK.... Hope to have video soon.. good or bad, it's getting posted.[:)]

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
OK - Update More issues... install new sensor, have spark now! Good. Test run engine on stand. Uh oh.. backfire? Hmmm ? [>:] Check timing, seems fine. Try again.. engine kicks back, whacks finger.. OUCH. Bad. But - engine starts! Good! While stepping back in pain, uh oh.. engine is running.. in theory at idle.. but the prop pulls the stand over. BAD. Parts fly! Run for cover!! Uh oh. Not good. Broken stuff, black and blue finger. Bad. Seem to have the jinx in place.... must break the string of poor luck.[;)]

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
And, since I am tired.. decide to put the wing on and stop working on it tonight. Want to see the plane on it's legs.. been some time since it has been together. Notice, I've made the first distress pass with the scotch pad to bring the detail up. Obviously, a lot more weathering and detailing to come .... good night !

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
OK - tailwheel. Took a bit of fussing with the door "cam" Also discovered, the retract works great when inverted, but hangs lower when upright. oops.. push's doors open. More adjusting.. and it's ok now.

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
OK - installed the main gear for what should be the final time before flight. Glued the inner doors on, installed the air cylinders,.. then ran the air hoses. Next, instal the Sierra main gear.. and air lines. Do some routing, and they are in! Next, install the UP2 valve, which sequences all the gear doors ala the full scale.. add air lines, put some air in, and action! OK, had to "adjust" a few things, but all working now. Next - tail wheel . . .

OK - now the "fun" part. Trying to figure out how to mask and paint the red to get the nose like the "Hurry Home Honey" pic .. easier said than done. Not even sure how many red squares there are.. can't tell from pic. Will try to google this plane and see. How do YOU guys figure this out? Slight taper to nose of course! Suggestions ?

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
Finally got around tostart some detail painting. The stencils are great .. from Vicki at getstencils.com. Good service! Anyway, positioned them, did some masking and taping.. get out the airbrush. Put the white down first. Then, figure I have to wait til the white dries, so I'll put some black on. Decide not to use the airbrush, use some flat paint I have in a can. Work fine. Just have to do light coats to built the color to avaoid bleed. The directions are very clear on that! As long as I was spraying black, figured I may as well put on the theater ID bands on the bottom. So, some more quick taping, and that's done.... Edit: pics wont take right now.. late on those!

Also pulled all the tape off the wings and various control surfaces ... forgot about the ID lights I made some time ago. Used liquid mask to cover up the color. Here they are being reveled again.

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
Have been concerned about the low tack tape that has been on the plane for months now .. uh oh. Was concerned about it taking off the silver paint since it may have bonded after so long between painting sessions . . . But, thank goodness for high quality low tack tape! Came off with no issues. WHEW! 3M fine line tape for edges, then low tack masking tape.. then newspaper. No paint bleed. [ Always worry about that! ] Been a long time coming to get to this stage . . . for me, this is the longest I have ever taken in building an airplane.

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
Finally got some decent weather for outside painting! Bought a new HPLV detail gun to solve my painting issues. Whew! Also - the longer I looked at the faded olive drab, I decided that the color was just too light for a plane this large. So - go find 15 bottles of olive drab Model Masters, stir and mix them into one large batch.. ready to go. Much darker than teh faded olive .. hope it's OK ! Start after a day of flying.. eve, but sunny and no wind really. Conditions right. Get set up, and go to town. Almost ran out of paint !! SHould have had 16 bottles! But with proper thinning, was able to get everythiong painted to my satisfaction. This is a lot of plane to paint with 1/2 oz bottles! In the second picture, the main center section of the wing is still wet .. fresh off the assembly line! Now everything is green !

RE: Nosen P-51 Not, giant build for Toledo Show..
And it's now Sunday .. Hmm. Ever have one of those days when things just don't work out well? Well - that was today. Finally get the time to paint, weather is good.. and ... problems. I mixed up all the bottles of Model Master together into one batch. Thinned it, so ready to go.. But wait, the air brush isn't working right.. no paint draw? Hmm. Clean Badger unit. Not working. OK, I'll pull out my brand spanking new Pache. Hmmm, no worky ?? What? Maybe the paint is too thick? Thin and try again. Nope. Hmmm, try just solvant, that should be thin.. Nope, won't draw. Tinker some more.. days a wasting. Try 3 different compressors.. finally get some draw. Not sure why. So start trialing some panels. Hmm, not able to get a good pattern. Dam. All day, and I only go some of it painted, and I am not even all that pleased with the result. In the end, I get frustrated and pull out my touch up gun. That works.. sort of, but used a lot of paint. Run out of paint. Dam. Not a very sucessful day. Here's a pic as It is getting dark. Club members stopping by on the way home from the field wondering why I wasn't flying on the first great day of weather. I am now wondering that too![X(] Hmm. I need a beer.

So - stayed up way late Sat night doing the tape job. The weahter wasn't good on Sat, so Sun was looking good for painting... Used some fine line tape, then low tack masking tape. Added news print to cover other areas. So, one sore back and a couple of Mountain Dews, it was all taped by 2 am. Prognosis: Paint !

RE: P51 Gear door drawings
I used 1/64 th ply to shape the door to the wing. Use achohol to wet and shape it. Then, I made the standoffs to hold it to the strut. The inner structure is nothing more than balsa strips cut to shape. Sand, coat with thinned epoxy, sand a bit more.. prime and fill.

Hi Tom . . . The issue is - I have to paint outside in the breeze. The airbrush spray gets all disturbed and I don't get a nice edge. Basically, I can't control the overspray outside so I make a hard line instead.
