RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
These planes have lots of torque to cause a left turn on takeoff. In general the P-51 (model or full scale) is known for this. Generally expect to hold lots of right rudder to counteract the torque on takeoff. The torque is less of a problem if some elevator and throttle management is used. Go easy on the throttle to get it rolling. Once it starts to roll don't hold any up since the high angle of attack created by holding up will increase the torque. Gently add some up elevator once it is at flying speed. You will still need a good amount of right rudder to keep it from turning. What retract were you using? I'm confused why changing it would solve this type of problem.
ORIGINAL: badazzgti03 Tried to maiden the P51 2 weekends ago and had an issue with the retract tail wheel on take off. plane kept wanting to swing around. Is there any torque that would pull this plane to the left on take off? I have a GP Christen Eagle 2 .46 and that thing pulls hard to the lefty and needs lot of right rudder. But replacing the tail wheel retract with a robart air unit and having servo to activate tail wheel doors. ill take some pics once the install is finished.
We had several of these issue in Michigan durring the last two elections. Never had a significant event affected but have lost a few good days when I would have flown. It's a bit like gun control. Law abiding folks are not the ones that are a concern. At best it provides a false sence of security. At wost this will make criminals out of some folks that would have followed the law if it was reasonable.

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Ok. I can't stand much more of watching. The kit I bought a few weeks ago is open on my bench. The box is yellow but the parts all look good. I have not checked but it does look like everything is in the box. I may have to take the plans to a copy show so that i can make some working copies and start just as soon as the housework is done. My big project before fall is painting the deck, swing set, and some indoor moldings on the first floor. then I have some maintenance work to do on a few other models before I start this one. I should have rented! Yours looks really good!

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Vincent The two kits I found were not started. The Liberty sport is still wrapped in plastic. Someone opened the Ryan but it looks to be complete. The box is yellow from age but the wood, hardware, and plastic parts all seem to be there and are in good shape. Balsa is an amazing material and can last for many years when properly handled. That same seller had another Ryan that was started and someone else grabbed it as I walked up. Latter we compared what we purchased and only the tail had been worked on. Fortunately I found the second one and quickly put it under my arm. I can't wait to start one of them but it will be a month or more before some of my household responsibilities are taken care of.
ORIGINAL: VincentJ Welcome Carl and Jimmy! Carl the two kits that you found were they started or not? Nice find. I know what you mean about the Ryan bringing you back in time. Jimmy can't wait to see some pictures of your model.... The Ryan has been a plane that many have remembered and admired, to that end why has there been little information on such a wonderful airplane? Hopefully through this thread we can resurrect the Ryan and give it the attention it deserves!
<span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: "Arial","sans-serif"; FONT-SIZE: 9pt">What a strange turn of events, finding this thread. I remember looking through the old Sig catalogs and LHS dreaming of flying the Ryan STA with its bold front end and bright colors. Two weeks ago I went to a small swap and found not one but two models that have been on my "to build" list since my start in this hobby sometime in the mid '80s. One was the SIG Ryan STA special. The other was the Sig Liberty Sport biplane. I remember visiting the local shop and looking at both of these. Something about them just called to me but as a teenager I didn't have the money, time, or skills. Truth be told I may not be much better off today. My last kit build was a Sig Aqua Star about four years ago and really enjoyed getting back to actual building. But I purchased both kits at bargain prices which put a smile on my face. I look forward to your thread and sharing my eventual build with my two boys ages 7 and 9. So I have been looking for information online trying to decide which kit was going to be the project for this winter. Part of the choice will depend on power. I'm thinking a Satio 90. The power and sound just seem to suit this model. My other concern is proper covering and finish. So please include details of everything you plan to do! <span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: "Arial","sans-serif"; FONT-SIZE: 9pt">Count me as subscribed! <span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: "Arial","sans-serif"; FONT-SIZE: 9pt">Carl

This build looks great. Hopefully we will get to see it completed soon. Hello. Like many I remember admiring this kit years ago. Back then I didn't have the money or skills to do it justice. The good news is that I just bought one at a swap meet and it looks to be complete and in good shape. The bad news is that it will be a little while before I can start building it. Now I'm looking forward to winter so that I can get started.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
We are looking at two different problems. The flap on one side is warped. This should be corrected or excessive trim will be required in flight and the risk of tip stall is increased. You are correct. Looking back at the pictures, the cowl looks great but does not allow enough cooling. It should have an opening near the bottom rear to allow air out.
ORIGINAL: Lifer I Fly

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
In the picture It’s difficult to tell if the aileron next to the flap is centered properly. If it is then you have more than 1/8th of an inch to correct. That is enough to affect flights so I would definitely do something to correct it. The best way would be to use heat and some pressure to try and remove the warp (flex/bend flap and then heat covering and let it cool to shrink covering and reduce warp). Sometimes setting some pressure on surface like this for a period of time will help. Setting it with some pressure from rubber bands or weights and letting it sit overnight may help.

RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
<span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: "Arial","sans-serif"; FONT-SIZE: 9pt">I'm a big Sig fan and have enjoyed several of their kits over the past 25 years. I started with a Kadet Mrk. II and later continued with one of their quick build mustangs, an aquastar and owned a kougar that someone gave me for a little while. All are good plans. A few years I wanted something for my sons to get started in the hobby and was pleased to find the Sig Senioreta EP ARFs and now have two of them (one for each boy). It may have been a mistake but I couldn't bring myself to buy a big expensive block of foam. One of the best things about Sig kits are the instructions. I still have the instructions for my 25 year old Kadet. It is great reference for how to determine thrust lines, CG, incidence angle, pushrod geometry and other things. Much of this knowledge is omitted, or incorrectly assumed to be comon knowledge by other manufacturers. Some new owners bought the company a few years ago and they are going through the lineup of models and adjusting the offerings to make the company stable fo the long term. I know this from speaking with some of the employees at the Toledo RC show the past two years. Unfortunately this means that some of the offerings are temporarily or permanently unavailable. Some of their Asian build ARFs have been removed and will be replaced. Unfortunately these designs have gone Grey Market and can be bought through other suppliers. Even though the quality of these grey market models is not the best I'm sure this hurts Sig. Some of their supplies and offerings will not come back (their covering, engines, and certain models) but they should be building their line of offerings back up. When I shop for a model I always check their site. If nothing else they have some great stuff to look at. Wish my local shop had some of them. Happy building and flying.

RE: what caused the turbine jet crash??!!!!!
I'm not trying to make you feel bad but it seems like a battery issue. I had a similar sistuation on a plane last year. Not a jet but a giant scale Stearman. After the crash I was scratching my head because the only thing that made sence was a battery issue. My research indicated that the larger NiMH pack (2000mAh) could not have been fully charged with my charger. Many folks think you can fully charge these batteries with a stock or aftermarket NICAD charger. In fact several "experts" had inidcated otherwise. This type of batteries can also be damaged by overcargine. So a trickle charger should probably not be used. A smart charger specifically for this chemistry is probably best. My crash was very similar, the plane was working fine an hour latter when I found it in a tree. It had some jittery surfaces prior to flight. Uplugging and connecting the extention wires seemed to solve the issue. No more jitters. This had happened a few times before and I flew it without issue. Now that i understand the problem I realize how lucky I was. It had many flights on it before my learning experiance!

RE: How are you drilling your props
I use an old Masterairscrew Drill Guid Balance System. This provides a guide to put the hole right on the CG of the prop so that it is perfectly blalance. Positioing the prop in the guid on the balance takes some time but then you can use the proivded drill to put a clean hole through the prop hub. No sanding tips and it's possible to get the prop blanced tip to tip and accross the hub (laterally). Unfortunately these are no longer made so finding one is difficult. http://masterairscrew.com/manualinstructions/Drill_Guide_Balance_System_Instructions2a.pdf

In my opinion most pilots are depicted too small for proper scale. They are usually displayed in incorrect positions as well. On a P51 the pilots sholders should be the width of the copit opening and his head would be the only portion above the sides. Fortunately real people come in different sizes. I've never herd somone say "that pilots in the wrong position" or "that pilot is the wrong scal." Look at some pictures to decide what looks correct to you.

I don't know how much of a power difference there is between the DLE and my Saito 115 but I setup mine with the futaba 3003's. It's a fast model with the Saito and the correct prop. No signs of any problem after many flights. Truthfully the control surface deflection required to fly this model is minimal if you fly it like a warbird. The exception to that is the flaps that need
