RE: ESM 50cc Spitfire rework
No mate, your hearing is fine!! I make/restore puppets, marionettes, automatons and scale model aeroplanes for a living, not a massive money earner due to the time involved, but it keeps me off the streets!!! The 262 was a complete strip and rebuild of a previously flown model, new formers, wing spars, wing skins, fuselage top deck and cockpit, mountings and fixings for everything, plus changes in shape etc to make it look a bit more like the full size. Here's a few marionette pics to give you the idea. Off topic I know but its thread!!! There aint too many puppet makers out there! I wonder how many odd ball professions are out there in the aeromodelling world?? Ian.

RE: ESM 50cc Spitfire rework
Just thought I'd put a bit of an update to report the model is still performing very well, no issues at all. Actually I was looking for some info and it took me ages to find the thread again!! I'm amazed by the interest in the colour scheme, it shows up well and stands out very well compared to all those dull camouflaged birds [:D] Ian.

RE: Down Elevater to fly level?
If the model flies right in all respects, especially the 'sit' of it in the air, then the issue is simply tailplane incidence. Altering the wings incidence will alter the models sit in the air, in this instance it will make it sit tail high at the same speed. Altering the wing will also alter the actual thrustline inflight because of the different sit of the fuselage. Ian.

Cracking job on that motor. Like you say, without care the BUSA vacformed cylinders don't look nice. Yours Sir, certainly do!! Are you finding that the model is turning out better than the original, in terms of scale details? Mine did, I put it down to the fact that spent more time this time round, as the basic model was there already!!?? Ian.

TK, your Cub is looking great. This thread is a bit Deja Vu to me since I rebuilt a 1/4 Cub last year that was nearly as old. Some of my pics even look like yours!!! I love your chosen scheme, have you any full size pics? Heres a before, in progress and after photo's. Before it was a bit semi scale, wrong fin fillet, windscreen shape, no opening door or window, so many formers in the cockpit you couldn't even get a pilots seat in there!! I removed all the formers and made a wire framework for the cockpit. Apologies for cluttering your thread. Watching with interest, Ian.

RE: Yak 3's practice day Vid Wanaka 2012
[quote]ORIGINAL: Chad Veich Very true but the Allison does a pretty fine job of pulling around Mustangs too, and even one Spitfire that I'm aware of. From what I've heard the Allison powered 'stang will actually run away from the Merlin powered models at low altitudes. Plus, the Allison P-51 is by far the sexiest version of the airplane! (That last part might just be my opinion though!) Some pics from my collection, a P-51A and an A-36. RE: Yak 3's practice day Vid Wanaka 2012
Cheers or posting, the Yak 3 is certainly a beautiful aeroplane. I thought the Allison powered versions had an intake along the top deck, between the cowl and cockpit which was always the giveaway, but perhaps they've moved it elsewhere to keep the original looks. Ian.

Been doing some doodles and some research into the cockpit that is going to go in it when time allows. Plenty of space for as much cockpit as DB wants. Weight will be a big cosideration but we should be able to do something half decent. I would think about one of Ty's cockpits if I lived Stateside, but the cost of shipping to the UK makes it a bit pricey. Ian.

Well after a couple of weeks waiting for time and decent weather to coincide, the silver Spitfire took its first flights today. Hopefully pics and vid will appear shortly. No issues whatsoever, masses of power, no cooling issues, radio hatch stayed shut, canopy opens and shuts fine in flight, nothing loose or fell off!!! No trim changes with the flaps or gear down. Full flap landings are a pleasure. Happy bunny. Ian.

RE: ESM 50cc Spitfire rework
Hi Tim, I can't be much help with the colours unfortunately, the paints use for the roundels on this Spitfire are simply RAF Roundel red, white and blue. I altered the colour of the blue since the Dutch used a lighter blue than RAF blue, the orange I simply mixed up with red, yellow and a bit of white. Somewhere in this thread is a link to an excellent set of walkround photos, about 200 which are a superb reference for anyone doing a Dutch Spitfire, I'll try and find the link again. Ian. EDIT, heres the link, enjoy!! http://ipmsnl.netfirms.com/walkarounds/CH-spitfire/spitfire-CH1.html

RE: ESM 50cc Spitfire rework
Hi Dirk, on this I used a well worn and almost smooth Scotchbrite pad, and rubbed the access away with a cotton cloth. Finally got a bit more time to finish this off (darned marionettes getting in the way again) Glassed a chunk of lead in the nose, after casting said chunk to match the nose. There is an extra cowl support and mount more than 1/2 way forward so I'm not worried in the slightest. This weight is probably nearly 2 lb which seems to be about right for the standard versions of the model. I'll get the AUW tonight. Couldn't live with the crappy glass u/c doors after I'd foolishly fitted them, so I took them off and made some new ones, a very simple job with 1/32 ply and thick lithoplate. Anyhoo, heres a couple of pics showing the doors and retract covers etc. Ian. The balance point at the minute, without batteries, tank, throttle and choke servo's and Rx is about 30mm behind the 153mm stated in the storybook. When I've balanced ESM models in the past, I've always found my ideal position is a tad further back, meaning less ballast, but we'll see. Ian.

Heres a couple of pics assembled, just gear doors and some internals to sort. Certainly is a scheme that stands out from the green / grey, brown / green examples. Keep having to look back to make sure all the roundels are on the right way round, its an ocd thing! Quite pleased with how the white painted mesh blends in from certain angles. I'll work the CofG out tonight, shouldn't be too far away from the factory measurement bt I guess it'll need a drop or two of lead. Ian. All markings now on. Must say the masks for the complicated roundels worked superbly. I was picky with them since I didn't want any overlapped colours on the roundels, so the masks had to be perfect, and perfect they were, very simple to use with good results. Flightline Graphics really know their stuff. Just got to refit the motor and retracts, fit the tank, throttle and choke servos and finally mount the Rx, then the dreaded balancing act!! Not too worried really, what it needs it needs. Ian.
