RE: 3W Inconsistent
3w engines are famous for leaking air. Take the carb and the reed valve off and seal the gaskets with permatex. I had a similar problem with my 106 and after it was sealed it became very reliable. I do not believe that you have an ignition problem. My experience with ignitions is that they either work or they do not.

RE: hottest weather to hover safely?
Probably the most important thing you can do is to make sure your engine air is ducted well. I have hovered here in Nevada when it was in the high ninety's, but Im sure it gets much hotter there. When it gets abobe one hundred, (40 degrees C) just stay away from the extended hovers. It might pay to get a temperature gun and keep an eye on your engine temp.

Another thing to check is the fuel filter. Check the carb screen and ensure it is not partially blocked.

RE: 3w 106 Question
I have the updated aluminum reed block. I also had gerhardt install the aluminum carb carrier. I called gerhart and he thought it was the ignition. He thought it was the caps. I replaced the caps with no change. I ordered a new ignition to see if it is in the ignition module itself. I think that TKG's idea has merit, so I'm going to replace the ignition to rule that out. RE: 3w 106 Question
I'll try that. I have a voltage regulator left over from before I was flying A123's. Ill remove that and see how it goes. Yesterday I put on a new carb kit but no change. I also tried replacing the plug caps on the ignition in case they were not making good contact with the wire. Still no change. Slowly I am learning what the problem isn't.

RE: 3w 106 Question
That is the funny thing about this situation is that once the engine starts and runs it is extremely reliable. It is just getting it to that point. Gerhart said that it could be the ignition caps. He is sending me two new caps to replace the old ones. Hopefully either the carb or the caps will fix the problem.
ORIGINAL: WRK I think you have an ignition problem.
the reason i don't think its the ignition is because it only does that until it starts and runs after that there is no problem. It seems to be isolated to when the engine is cool.

RE: 3w 106 Question
the only thing is that once the engine gets going, it is reliable. The transition is smooth with no hesitation. the other part is the fact that when it starts it sounds as if it is running on one cylinder for a while, then all of a sudden the rpm increases and it runs fine after that.

3w 106 Question
I have a 3w 106 that has an issue. When I first start it, it runs and then dies several times until warms up. After it starts, it takes a few minutes until it runs well. It doesn't sound as if it is running on both cylinders. After about 30 seconds or so, it runs fine and continues to do so until I shut it down and fly again. It should be noted that after it starts and runs fine it is completely reliable and no issues at all. When I shut it off and start it to fly again, it is the same story. I have looked at the reeds and they are not cracked or broken. I have cleaned the carb and replaced the ignition and checked the timing. My question is do reeds wear out without breaking, or should I be looking somewhere else?

RE: Echo Oil for DLE?
That is a good article. What I get out of it is that if you are using a non-castor additive, you need to stick to the manufactureres recommendations for mixing your oil.

RE: Echo Oil for DLE?
I use echo oil for all of my planes, but I mix it at 50:1. I have a DLE 55 a DA 100 and a 3w106. I mix it 50:1. It works great and is readily available at home depot.

RE: Massive Krill Crash - spar failure
I do maneuvers with my wild hare 35% giles that make flight that look like basic Imac flight. If that is all of the stress a Krill can take, then I am definitely out. Maybe that is why they began making planes with wing tubes rather than spars.

Man I didnt see anything in that video that would have been too much for the airframe. based on that flight alone that should have never happened. Good job on the video though!!

RE: 3w 70i
Sounds like an air leak to me. (3w's are famous for this) I would try sealing all of the intake gaskets with hi-temperature silicone and see if that takes care of the problem first.
ORIGINAL: TimT2000 TOM thanks for the info, I better rethink my tuning's. I pride my self for smooth running gassers with no burble, 4 stroking or break up in the mid range but it looks like I am running them lean. I will open the high needle 1/4 turn and maybe lean the low end a little for starters. I bet it will start burlbling a little in the mid range but that is better than burning them up and having a engine out!!. I hear the Masters planes running rough in the mids, but I may be the one that has mis tuned. I bet Jedi Jody is going to punch me for the oil I use and running so lean. <img alt='''' src=''http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/confused_smile.gif'' /> Tim
A quarter turn is too much. Gas engines are more sensitive than glow engines. I would start with a 1/16 of a turn rich.

I just ordered another 100cc Giles. I am still flying mine, I am pushing 200 flights but I know it wont last forever. Hands down it is the best 3d plane out there right now. I have a 3w 106 on it and it flies like a dream. Thought I would get another while they are still available. Heres a link to my smoking video http://youtu.be/ExF11ta3OGc

That rule is generally pretty safe. I have not had a plane yet where the front of the wingtube would not be a safe place to begin.

Use the wingtube and you cant go wrong. The front of the wingtube is good for IMAC/aerobatics. The back of the wigtube is perfect for 3D flying.

It's been a long time since i've flown 50cc, but this is definately a keeper. I like the way it looks in a harrier coming at you, it reminds me of a batman plane. If you're thinking about it and you have the chance to buy one, DO IT!
