RE: Someone mentioned warped wing
and vertical. The flat bottom of the rib pattern sits on a flat surface. This is the jig. Washout may be built

top to bottom and check again. Do this on jig. Ribs are correct when no differences can be felt

RE: Someone mentioned warped wing
Well, water will warp any wood product I've ever seen, unless it is perfectly sealed. It will even get to the almighty woodpecker meatloaf (MDF, chip board and particle board) given time. So my thinking is that any water based product will warp wood.

RE: How many wing bolts?
That's true, Top Gunn. Another thing I didn't like was that a screw driver would cam out of the screw slot and usually ruin your nice covering job. But, if they do the job for you, good on you.

RE: How many wing bolts?
Most of the low wing designs are, shall we say, are captured in the fuselage by formers fore and aft. Mid wings, generally use some kind of wing tube. I just don't see a wing shearing off without affecting the fuselage. High wing flat bottom. Maybe. I once witnessed a Sig Kadet hit a steel light pole and shear about 1/3 of the left side of the wing completely off. It flew on and landed

RE: How many wing bolts?
I always use 1/4 od aluminum rod or thin wall 4130 chrome moly tubing if the plans show wooden dowels. You won't break one of these babies. Plus, they can always be salvaged and reused to give those poor trees a break. [:D] I also like aluminum bolts. There is not even enough weight to notice on the average .40-.60 size model. Nylon gets brittle as it dries out. Of course, nylon can be stored or boiled in water to retain it's strength. Not one of the things I want to do. Years ago, most flyers boiled their nylon props to make them last. Then, there are just poor quality nylon bolts available. I'll let someone else take this risk. If I was forced to use nylon bolts, I would use two.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Those kits were top notch. Wish I had gotten a few more of them. Does anyone have an idea of what the final ready to fly weight was?

RE: First Time Kit Builder: Project GP Super Decathalon
You're right on the money, Buzzard Bait. It's close coupled and the stab is rather small. I checked the plans of the kit I have and the ratios (stab area to wing area, ECT) could stand a little adjustment. Adding two inches or so to the fuselage and a little more stab area would probably calm it down. But then it would turn into something like a Cub. In this case, I think this kit is exactly what Great Planes wanted. This thread has got me thinking about building another, I still have that 70 surpass also.

RE: First Time Kit Builder: Project GP Super Decathalon
They will stall on take off If you are not going fast enough. Easy to avoid that. Power is what you want. Nail that OS 70 with a 14" low pitch prop and the one I built would be flying almost before you could react. One of the guys I flew with had a .60 2 cycle in his. With that Surpass, I don't remember adding any weight to balance it. It is indeed a fine choice. If you fly from a grass field a fast landing will rip the landing gear off if the field is not kept in good shape. And to quote Gray Beard, Don't take your eyes off of it.

RE: First Time Kit Builder: Project GP Super Decathalon
I built one of those years ago. Get somebody with some experience to help you if you are not a very good flyer. They were known to snap when slowed down too much while landing. If I remember correctly, Great Planes issued a technical advisory that recommended building some washout into the wing. I built mine without any dihedral to help with the snapping. Engine was an O.S. 70 Surpass turning a 14X4 or 5 wood prop. Great flying aerobatic model and the snapping problem (certainly mine) was inexperience. Good luck with yours. Edit. It may be to your advantage to give Great Planes a call. Somebody there may be able to help you with that advisory..

RE: wing loading
Take the area of a mono plane wing that would fly the airplane and add 40%. Divide by half for equal upper and lower wings, or you may have a longer wing for the top as long as the area stays the same. Edit. Probably not the answer you wanted. Biplanes are about 70% as efficient as monoplanes if that helps.

You're welcome, aerowoof. Would you mind giving me the wing span on that .20 size? I'm building some smaller electrics now, and would like to reduce a set of the .40 size plans.

RE: Another Kadetito Build
I expect you'll be OK with the dihedral, sirzepp. I checked a model design book I have, and for a trainer, an angle of 6-8 degrees was specified for 3 channel trainers. Think I'll go with 9 degrees. A little bit either way probably won't matter.

RE: Another Kadetito Build
Looking good, sirzepp. I have a question about the dihedral in the wing. I am working on a Kadetito also and on the plans I have there is no actual figure for the amount of dihedral. Measuring the angle of the dihedral brace with a protractor I get 9.5 degrees. Is there a figure on the plans you have?

RE: Just bought a Skyward 25 kit, but need some info/help
I remember that brand name, but never saw one. I remember them as being an early ARF, although they could have been kits. The only thing I can suggest is to go to the RCM Plans site. Go to requested articles and toward the bottom of the page there are some design your own articles by Chuck Cunningham and Ken Willard. Good luck finding plans. EDIT. I couldn't see what was left in the box

RE: Four * Forty modification?
I've always built D-tube wings. That sheeting will most likely be in front of the balance point, which will be a good thing in most cases. The added strength and ease of handling is worth every gram. Weight? Maybe an ounce. The best thing to do is throw that lite ply in the trash. It is heavy, weak (for plywood) and usually warped.
