RE: Inline IC engines
Apparently Cessna engineers weren't aware of all the above problems when they designed the 337 Tractor/Pusher config you describe... [:D] You might check out KMP's model of the 337 [link=http://www.kmp.ca/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=29&osCsid=e9b42ebc92bd13b3573e500322b99009]KMP[/link],, I talked to them at the West Coast IMAA flyin at Castle.. They seemed to think any too engines within the specified range would work just fine... No big deal... I think there are a couple threads on here about the plane and engines also... Been awhile though...

RE: phoenix decathlon
I ran the exhaust on both the .56 and .72 right into the cutout... No deflectors or anything used... The clearance on mine is more the adequate .... No problems at all... I did also however cut a hole in the bottom om my cowling for cooling and to allow me access to the LS needle on the carb... Whole thing works great.... Sargento Great looking SDC there... Your in for a lot of fun flying [:D]

RE: phoenix decathlon
What John said... I am using Futaba servoes and added 6 inch extensions to mine.. Ad for the gyro, I have a couple of Extra's, 3 Mustangs etc .. They are all tail draggers and no problems getting them to track straight on take off.. I had a Global Decathlon that tracked straight down the runway... The Seagull especially and the Pheonix to a lessor degree seem to be a whole different story.. .. On John's advice I put a gryo in my second one and it made it a much more enjoyable experiance for me.. If I remember correctly the engine measurment on mine is 4 1/2 inches... .. My battery ended up 3 or 4 inches back behind the wing... John.. Have you flown yours yet ?... Don't know about Az but the weather here has been terriable for the last couple weeks.. Up to 40 mph winds and raining today... Not Dec weather [:D]

RE: phoenix decathlon
The thrust washer they are refering to is the one that is on the engine and the back of the prop backs up to... Not the one that goes on the front of the prop.. The idead here is to get the engine positioned so the prop will clear the cowl... I didn't even measure mine... With the 4 strokes I just mounted the engine as far back as practical and bolted it down... No big deal .. You can move the cowl in and out quite a bit to postion it on the engine.. Set upi emgine on the mounts and then slide the cowl over it and into postion to make sure it goes far enough back to mound on the plane if you are concerned... If the cowl wont go over the engine hold it alongside the engine and eyball it... These are not critical measurements.. As for the blue mounts, I have two of the SDC's and they both came with the blue plastic mounts... I prefer them to the metal ones for a lot of reasons I won't go into now.. It is a solid build and a great flyer.. Enjoy

RE: phoenix decathlon
I am using the Futaba GYA 240 I think it is.... I have the gain set per the instructions .. I would have to take the plane apart to get to it and check for sure as it is way down in there under a false floor... I have it on channel 5 right now a two position switch which is set to give me off and headlock... Originaly I had it on a three position switch which gave me normal mode. headlock and off... I found the headlock mode worked the best and a three position switch is hard to keep track of so I went to the landing gear switch with just off and headlock... With head lock on I cannot use the rudder stick... It really messes up the headlock etc... I really enjoy seeing it go straight down the full length of the runway and gently lift off...

RE: phoenix decathlon
Hey Sargento Looking forward to the flight report... I usually leave the cowl off mine also for the first few flights.. If you have to change the thrust angles etc it's nice to do so before bolting the cowl down [:D] I use a lheadlock gyro on mine so I have to turn it off befor I attempt a turn or it will fight me all the way ... I put differential in the ailerons... I set the endpoint on channel one 75/100 and channel 6 100/75... Then set the dual rates to set the throws... Turns real nice now with no rudder required... I agree CG is a matter of preferance... 4 inches back as recommended by Pheonix is very difficult to fly.. The elevator is way to sensitive.. As above I went 3 1/2 back which works very well.. Then add a little nose or tail lead for that final touch.. I prefer mine a little tail heavy.. I like to come in flat with a couple clicks and land on the mains... Inverted I like to have to hold a touch of down so I don't forget which up I am using [:D] Looking forward to the flight report and pictures [:D]

RE: phoenix decathlon
Hey John We are talking Pheonix right ?.. If so I did my first one at 4 inches and found it very tailheavy in flight.. Looked kind of like a porpoise in flight [:D]. I changed the CG to 3 1/2 which seemd to be a much better starting point on both of mine... With both of mine (Saito .56 and Saito .72) I had to mount the battery about 2/3 of the way back in the fusalage to come out right.. To balance I finish the plane up minus the battery, put the plane on my CG stand then slide the battery pack down the fusalage until the balance is where I want it.. Then cut the bottom of the fusalage open at that point and mount the pack .. I am waiting anxiously for your flight report [:D].. I think this one flys a lot better... I also added some differential to the ailerons on mine... Helps a lot doing those slow speed turns [:D]

RE: ASP 180 fs
As Patxipt said above... I went through the same thing with my Mag .01's... Was used to running Saito's... I had the Mag set for good transition and the pinch test also sounded good.. Still the idle was very undependable.. I richened the low end until it sounded like it was running too rich (compared to a Saito) and it is now a very dependable sweet running engine... Can't believe the price and performance on these... It's a win win.. I am running 15 percent PowerMaster and a OS F plug in mine with no problems...

RE: whats the ARF that started it all ????
Back in the late 60'd I had Lanier ARF called a Comet I believe... It was a 60 size red and white mid wing, plastic covered plane as I remember it.. Back when Super Tigers were the engines of choice I had a 60 size ST on it and a Kraft sport series radio.... Plane didn't look that great but flew real nice... Had a lot of fun with it. Still have the engine and radio [:D]

RE: tower hobbies
Horizon is much slower here too... If the Tower order is coming out of Reno the joke around here is "Click on Submitt and go stand on the front steps ".... Almost that fast... Ususlly a couple days... If the order is coming out of Ill it takes at least a week... I bought a ARF from Horizon (Seagull Decathlon) and the fuselage was missing some parts etc... Long story short it took 5 weeks to get a replacement ... Had a Mustang ARF from Tower that had a bad wing... Took 3 days to get a replacement and then use the box to ship the bad one back to them..

RE: Seagull Decathlon
Mine seemed to do pretty good on grass, I can only guess it is the drag on the wheels from the grass that helps... On a hard surface it's like veing on ice.. Interesting..

RE: Seagull Decathlon
You only reiforce my point Minn after looking at the vidio... You are taking off from a grass field.. I have flown mine off of grass at neighboring clubs and it is not much of a problem ... We went through this in previous posts... A grass field with this plane is relativly easy... I am talking about taking off on a concrete runway 40 feet wide and 600 feet long... Starting out centerline that leaves but 20 feet either side to play with it on concrete... Whole different game...

RE: Seagull Decathlon
Thanks Minn you have made my point... My first SD had no gyro.. I had several of the takeoffs you describe... Also watched ofthers do the same thing... I was fortunate to have a big enough engine to pull me out of those tight spots, others with the smaller engines did not.. In any event there were some ugly takeoffs.. Second SD had a gyro (thank you John Nelson) in it... Now with no effort at all I can go straight down the entire length of the runway gaining the required air speed with no problem .... Very pretty to watch... Anyone can firewall it, yank it off the ground and hope it will survives... I don't see the talent required for that some seem so proud of.. I have yet to see one without a gyro flown by anyone make it the full length of the runway...

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Howard One way of getting your lowspeed needle setting back in the ball park is as follows... Place a clean peice of fuel ling on the inlet nipple of your carb... Open the throttle barrel unit there is a gap the size of a large T pin visable... Now blowing on the fuel line trun the LS needle in till you van can't hear any air hissing through the carb.. Then back it out until you just begin to hear it hiss... This should put you in the "game"... Then once it is running you can get it even closer by pinching the fuel line.. If it dies it is lean... It should increase in rpm then drop/die... This will get you even closer.. Now it is just a question of how does it run... They seem to run best when they sound rich... A minute turn on the LS needle goes a long way at this point..... Just one of probably many ways to do this Hope this helps you

RE: Club MAGNUM !
I think the sound test is deciptive myself... It works pretty well for Saito's but as in the posts above when the Mag is running it's best/most dependable it sounds like it is running very rich.. Very deceptive.. Another way to tell is your too lean is the engine temp... If it gets way to hot to touvh wilhe idleing it is probably set too lean.. Keep in mind just a small adjustment on the Mag carb low end needle make a big differance...

RE: Club MAGNUM !
Sure seem that way don't they... Mine like rich too but they aren't fully broken in yet either... I know with my Saito;s it is a gradual process leaning the low end as it breaks in... I figure after I get a couple gallons through them I will try to lean them out a little..

RE: Club MAGNUM !
I use the pinch test to set mine up all the time... Works the same as a 2 stroke but with a little bit of a delay... If it dies when you pinch it you are lean... If it picks up and then dies you are close... You can release the line before it dies (if rich) and you don't even have to restart the engine... With a little practice you can tell by the duration of the rich peak weather it is too rich or not.. Works great and saves a lot of fussing for me.. If your lean as you are saying just richen up the low end about 1/16 of an inch rev it up to blow it out and try it again.. Been my experiance with the new mag carbs that it does not take much of an adjustment to change things when your in the ball park... Hope this helps

I find this very useful... A lot of us got the Mag.91's 4 strokes for 119.00 to our door because of codes posted here.... Most of the codes I get run till the end of the month... Plenty of time to post... Also seems that the discount codes one person gets are not as good as some otheres are getting... We get to choose the best ones this way [:D]

I agree, to each there own... Funny, you mention gyro though and right away some guys shorts start to bunch up [:D]. Same guy that is using a computer raidio with dual rates and endpoints etc instead of doing it mechanicaly but that seems to be ok with them... Most of the helicopter guys I know would not fly without them... Do they absolutly need them ?. No. Do they use them ?... Yes Oh well... Such is life...
