RE: Extreme Flight Extra 58"
Sure does, I just wasn't sure if it was a good idea to mess with either slotting or redrilling the firewall or not. With the stock holes, the flanges on the motor only overlap the motor mounts by about 1-2 mm so I might need to actually re-drill. You think I need to do any re-enforcing after installing the ply form the conversion kit and expoxying the whole thing? -Jay

RE: Extreme Flight Extra 58"
Any idea of where to get this turbo header? If there is a good reason not to use the slimline, I have no problem "leaving it on the shelf". Like I said, this is the first light build I've done and previously weight has not been a real issue. Also, I epoxied my firewall yesterday after installing the nitro conversion kit and went to fit the motor to the mounts and firewall and guess what, it doesn't fit[X(]! Anyone else rubn into this with the Saito 82 and the stock mounts and mounting holes??? Any recommendations? I looked at a number of different mounts from other companies (I work for a LHS so we have alot) but none of the firewall holes line up, do I have to re-drill? -Jay

RE: Extreme Flight Extra 58"
As of right now, I'm planning on using a Pitts style muffler from Slimline and inverting the Saito. I ran this setup in a Yak once and worked well. I'm one of those guys who really hates to cut up the cowl any more that needed. After a quick "eyeball measurement" it looks like the 82a will fit inverted with either no or very little cutting except for the muffler. As for a battery pack, I usually use a standard 6v JR or MPI pack. Any ideas how that will affect CG? Also, how much does the rudder servo really change the CG and do you think there is really going to be a performance difference with location? Thanks for the info, I'll try to get some pics this week. -Jay

RE: Extreme Flight Extra 58"
I'm new to this thread and figured I'd find some good info here. I picked up my extra last week on an "impulse purchase" while looking for a battery for my heli and can't wait to finish it and get her up. This is by far the lightest (build) plane I have owned and don't want to break anything. I've got a Saito 82 Golden Knight I'm planning on using and have had several guys from my club who have owned the Fliton tell me the .82 is borderline too big and likely to break the front end at some point. Chris at Extreme Flight recommended this as one of the better engines to use so I assume it's ok. Anyone have any experience one way or the other??? Also, what needs to be done to get this bird to balance if i want to use a pull-pull setup (or is it overkill)? BTW- sdstick06, nice work, but you might want to be careful if you are planning on selling those. You are very close to entering into copy write infringement. I know someone who got into some trouble for something similar once and it cost him a lot of money in fines. As far as I know, if they are free it is no problem but if you are selling them... well, lets just assume I bet they have pretty good lawyers[:@] [:@][:@]. -Jay K.

RE: Mini Titan thread
Ok, I know there have been a few people (including myself) with a few issues recently with programming issues and the whole "hard left" thing. After pulling out my hair and almost crashing a few times I finally decided to scrap the mixing unit/gyro and tail servo that came pre-installed on the ARF and I went with a 401 and JR DS3400g tail servo (it's what we had in stock at the LHS I work at) and boy, what a difference! The tail was soooooo painfully sloooowwww before, it was like it was getting hung up and binding. The new system has fixed all problems as of right now and she flies nice. I'm still not doing any 3D so I'm not pushing it, but I'm just glad it works now. My official review to anyone reading this that is thinking of buying the Mini Titan... do NOT buy the ARF that has the servos and mixing unit/gyro pre-installed. Go for the kit or the standard ARF with just the motor and speed control.

RE: Mini Titan thread
Definition of this particular hard left is HAAAAAAARD left. With out the old training gear from my t-rex, it would just tip over before it ever left the ground on a normal (for me) slow "lift off". My T-rex 450 SE V2 has a nice gentle transition with very little "left". After a bit more tuning I can get it into a hover but have to hold a good amount of right stick and it is about as stable as a Blade CP if you've ever flown one of those. I'm lost... -Jay K

RE: Mini Titan thread
I sure am glad I decided to check email before I went crazy. I've been going nuts the past few days trying to figure out why the swash was going up instead of down, boy do I feel stupid[:@]! I still can't figure out why this thing wants to go hard left as soon as it gets light on the skids. The swash is level and it seems that everything (that I can think of anyway) is checking out, but it's kind of scary when this thing tries to go over. -Jay K.

RE: Mini Titan thread
patatchim, That was my thought as well, I did not figure it could have anything to do with the gyro, but you never know. I did start to plow through the manual but have not gotten that far yet. At the recommendation of a few others, I bypassed the "mixing" unit with everything but the rudder to let my DX7 do it and now the right aileron servo is not working. I guess I have to figure out how to mis it in with the radio programming. Also, I did look at the swashplate movements and it seems to me that everything is moving in the right direction, I will check the manual today to be sure. -Jay

RE: Mini Titan thread
I just got my new MT ARF finished and am having a bit of a problem. The particular model I have is the one that comes mostly pre-built with ACE servos and this (IMO) silly CCPM mixer and gyro all in one. Apparently it is designed to be able to work with cheap 4 or 5 channel airplane radios, and I'm wondering if it might not work properly with my DX-7. As son as I try ti lift off the bird wants to take a HARD left. It was scaring me enough that I put the training gear on so it wouldn't tip over immediately. I've checked what I know to check and can't figure this one out. When I plug in the battery and all the servos center themselves, the swashplate seems level enough, at least enough that it should be able to be fixed in trimming. I've got it to the point where if I give it reasonable right aileron and rear elevator, it manages to... well... not crash, but it is a hell of a handful in a hover. I've followed this thread on and off for a while and everyone seems to love the stability of this bird, that's why I bought it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I actually work for a LHS so parts are not a problem, I was thinking of changing out the stock mixer/gyro for a Futaba 401 like what I have on my t-rex 450se V2, but would that have anything to do with the hard left turn? -Jay K.

RE: Mini Titan thread
Anyone have (or flown) the new ARF yet? Just picked one up, couldn't help myself...seemed like too good of a deal. This this is basically RTF after the installation of the main rotors, tail boom and radio/reciever. The stock gyro or whatever it is they are calling it makes me wonder, might have to switch it out at some point but for now I'm told will be ok until I get into heavy 3D. Doesn't seem like a bad deal for $300[:D].

A new place to crawl in Chicagoland!
Hey everyone, it's winter in the midwest and there's not many warm places to crawl for a while. That is unless you live in the Chicago area. Hobbytown USA in Naperville, Illinois is in the midst of building a new indoor Rock Crawling Course. Construction should be complete by Dec. 14th and if it goes well there are plans to possibly/probably expand after the first of the year. It will be open (and free![:D]) during business hours with a competition schedule to come soon. The course will be demanding enough that experienced crawlers will have fun, but newbies can make it through. It's even going to have a Heli-pad for the boss' Blade CX2! Hope you can come visit!

RE: Raptor 50 Titan Discussion
ORIGINAL: HamboCopter Have flown my Titan a few times now with the Training gear attached. But I am having lots of problems with the heli beginning to shake like mad when just 6 inches or so off the deck. I know this is due to the training gear setup but I have tried adjusting the throttle trim and sometimes I can get into a stable hover but other times I have gone through half a tank of fuel continually touching down to stop the shake. I am flying stock setup with a 0-10 deg pitch range and DX7 controller. Any suggestions to limit this shake would be much appreciated. Regards, Mark
I never had this problem with my Raptor, but it happened on my T-Rex 450 and like Tomcat said, it has something to do with the natural resonance of your gear. On my T-rex, I had your more "normal" type of gear, carbon rods with whiffle balls at the ends. The thing shook like an SOB and started to do the chicken dance as soon as it lifted off. What I did with my Raptor was used a hula hoop with four 1/2 inch square wooden dowls in a tic-tac-toe type grid all zip tied together and then attached to the landing skids (also with zip ties) and I never had any problems. It is apparently rigid enough to not shake around. If you need a picture, let me know and I'll send one off. -Jay

RE: Raptor 50 Titan Discussion
Well, I'm hooked[:D][:D][:D]. I have only 3 flights on my Raptor 50 but love it. I'm still pretty much hovering with basic forward flight but can't wait for more. This bird is so stable I can't imagine trying to learn on a small electric. I even elected to use carbons instead of woodies and it is still very stable (much because of the fella who set it up and is helping me learn the ropes). I had a "invaluable" learning experience today. I was supposed to fly with my instructor tomorrow but bumped it up to today due to the potential of bad weather. When we got out there there the wind was pretty steady at about 15mph and gusting higher. Needless to say I was a bit intimidated. Being a "planker" I generally don't fly in that much wind but he informed me that he would hook me up on the buddy box and he hasn't had anyone crash on him yet so I went for it. All I can say is WOW is this different from fixed wing[X(]. I can't believe how much better helis handle the wind. Yeah, it did some bobbing but was very stable. My point is this, if there is anyone out there lurking that is trying to make a decision on a started heli, go big! I would recommend this bird to any beginner that can handle a Blade CX well or has some sim time under their belt. Of course it is a bit more expensive, but I'd be willing to bet that if I'd have started on a T-rex or something similar, the repair bills from crashing would pretty quickly add up to the price of one of these. I love it!!! -Jay K.

RE: Mini Titan thread
OK guys, I've got a question for you all.I'm looking int getting one of these and I'm up in the air between this and a T-rex. I am new to helis after flying planes for a while and started off last year with a Blade CX. Have been flying on the sim for a few months and do ok. I have a Raptor 50 that I've had a few flights on, but basically just getting used to it with hovering and basic FF. I want to get into something that i can fly in the park by house because I don't have the time to fly the big bird more than a few hours, once a week. Most guys around me are all T-rex nuts and are trying to talk me into one of those. There are however a few guys that really like these, but have limited time flying them (they are instructors) so cannot give a real good opinion. Any input as to the pros and cons of the mini Titan vs. the T-rex??? -Jay K.

RE: Raptor 50 Titan Discussion
Well, I'm new to this thread. Been doing fixed wing for a while and decided to get into a T-Rex 450 SE a few months ago and no sooner did I get it built and ready to go, it go stolen from my garage[X(][X(][X(]. I was going to replace it right away, but never did, I got into cars and trucks (what can I say, I'm a bit of a junkie). Well, now I'm ready for the leap again and am looking for a first heli... sort of. I flew a Blade CX for a while last year and got bored with it. I have both the FS One and G 3.5 simulators and have been getting some flying done there and it seem I'm at least getting a little better at getting around. nose in, side in are no problem. Can do basic forward flight ok until I get cocky and try to do something I shouldn't. OK, now for my question... Is this a good bird for someone who has basic skills? I keep hearing that much like fixed wing, the bigger they are, the better they fly. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. The only feedback I can get in my area are from the fearless 18 year olds who's parents keep them in the air. I know there are crash repairs, the money is not the issue, I don;t want to get in over my head. There are a few guys in the area who do lessons with buddy boxes as well. Thanks in advance! -Jay K

SavageManSS, I say you did get lucky, it took me two weeks of bitchin' and complaining to get them to agree to replace my block and a bent connecting rod. Originally, they told me to pi** off that it was from abuse and they were not going to cover it. I'm just happy I'll have a motor back soon[:D]! Once I get this thing back running with my stock shocks, it's going to be interesting to see how the Axial .32 is compared to the 4.6. Anyone got one of these installed??? -Jay K.

RE: PICS OF YOUR SAVAGES !!
OK fellas, I'm new to this thread and have a question for you all. I've been flying planes for a while and the kids at my LHS got me hooked on trucks about 3 months ago. Well, let's just say my pockets aren't as full as they once were[;)]. My most recent purchase was the Savage X with the 4.6 and I must say, I've had a run of bad luck. My first problem was on my 6th or 7th tank of fuel, I landed a bit tail heavy from a silly two feet of air, the tail rolled out in front so the truck went on it's lid and snapped the engine block in 6 pieces (pics to follow later). HPI is replacing the engine block for me, but in the interim, I replaced it with the Axial .32. Now, on to my question (which really has nothing to do with this)... During my down time, I also replaced the shocks with Integy MSR4 piggybacks. Anyone got some opinions on these??? The very first jump I hit, 4-5 feet of air onto grass, "taco'd" one of the shafts[:@][:@][:@]! So at this point I was going to replace the shaft, but after trying several different part numbers, nonoe of them match up. Can't get ahold of Integy because apparently they are a fully automated operation and no human beings work there. No responses from either voicemails or emails in over a week. Any input from you guys would be much appreciated. I've heard how durable and borderline indestructible the Savage is, but with my recent experiences, I'm a bit skeptical. I've put my E-Savage and Revo 3.3 through much more than this and never broken anything major. I've tumbled both from over 10 feet in the air and they keep going. Please help! -Jay K.

RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Part II - Thread Continuation
Moondoggie, I also started out with the P-51 PTS and agree that the quality is crap. If you can fly that plane ok, you'll do fine on the twist. There are a few differences to get used to, but get her up and fly her, you'll love it. I just started flying last August, put in about a dozen flights on the P-51 and went to the twist .60. My only two suggestions for your success is first, give it several flights to get used to it before you try to land in any decent amount of wind and make sure you don't get the Cg too much towards the tail... especially landing in the wind. I had to get someone to bring mine down for me a few weeks ago because of the rear cg and the wind. I thought I was in over my head and was losing confidence, but when they brought it down, they were suprised as to how hard it was to land. We figured out it was all because of the cg being too far back. We brought it forward a bit and now she lands like a dream! Like TimC said, you can drop it where you want it. Good luck! -Jay K.

RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Part II - Thread Continuation
Dutch, You ever had any problems with your HiTec digital servos centering? I have them on my Yak and a buddy of mine did a little demonstration to show me how they "hunt". When I move the sticks around and let go so they recenter themselves, the servos do quite a bit of hunting around the center point and only about 50% of the time get exactly centered. I've not noticed any problems yet with the Yak, but I also put HiTec digitals on my T-rex 450. If they are hunting that much, I'm wondering if it will affect a heli. Aside from that... I love 'em too[:D]. -Jay K.

RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Part II - Thread Continuation
Bruce, Being that the Saito 100 and 125 are the same size because they use the same case (the way I understand it is that the 125 just uses a bigger cylinder) you can always switch them out if you need to. I still think something was goofy with you last plane or set up. Like I said, I have the exact same set up of plane and engine and it balances perfectly. Maybe do a dry run without fully installing the motor to see how she balances. The 125 on this bird might have you ripping the wings off and working for NASA as well. I'm sure it would work fine, but that is HUGE power for this bird. If you do go with the 125, promise us video[:D]! That baby might actually end up in orbit!!![X(][X(][X(] -Jay

I dunno about the weight of mine, I'll have to check when I get her down off the ceiling of the garage next time I fly. Do you have an aftermarket tailwheel that's heavy?
