RE: WHO IS COMING TO BOMBERFIELD'S B-17 GATHERING/BIG BIRD SEPT 2009?
The Texarkana Fat Boys are almost loaded up and will be headin' down early in the morning. The "restored Midwest Texan" will be coming along with a Zero and a Corsair. Also, a very large 60% cub that ya'll might have seen in last months AMA magazine. The Texan might be for sale if anyone is interested. BTW it has been flown and the Quadra 35 seemed to have plenty of power for it. Ya'll save a spot for us. Jim

RE: Dynaflite SE5A / S.E. 5A / SE-5 / SE-5A / Build
I have had problems with the tail skid/wheel breaking loose on mine. I cut the tail skid off from the rudder therefore making it two separate pieces. So if it breaks loose, it wont damage my rudder. I then hinged the skid with a 1 inch brass cabinet door hinge. Used like a nylon hinge by slitting the middle of the skid and post and sliding it in. I then drilled holes through them and added bolts to sandwich it in place. These were reinforced on the outside with 1/16 plywood glued on the post. So far it has worked great. Jim

RE: Dynaflite SE5A / S.E. 5A / SE-5 / SE-5A / Build
As seen here previously on this thread, I power mine with a converted weedeater gas motor. I think it is either a 25 or 23cc engine. Plenty of power. I used standard hi-torque futaba servos throughout with a 6 volt battery. One servo for the elevators, one for the rudder, and one for each aileron. This airplane rolls pretty fast for the size. I love flying it. It'll do beautiful spins and stall turns. As far as I am concerned, there is no need for the high priced equipment. Jim

Compared to some big birds its not that big. Just what you are used to. Flew mine several times again yesterday. Still love it. Hope to have it at Bomber Field next month. Would like to see more SE's there too. Anyone else bringing one? Jim

Sig has a nice ARF and I believe Hanger 9 does as well. Neither has flaps. I think Top Flight now has a 60 size ARF P-51. It may have flaps. Check out Tower Hobbies to see. Jim

RE: Me 109 guillows kit, blown up to 80 inch wing..
Foodsitck, I did not catch your video until now. Fantastic job. Your weathering job is outstanding. I got sidetracked on my Zero project. Decided to go ahead and finish my Midwest Texan restoration. That is done. Now I am almost finished recovering an older FW190 .40 size that I scratch built from some plans I got from AMA a few years ago. Yes, I still have some glow fuel left. Hope to finish it off soon with the FW. Next project is an 80 inch Miles Magister that I have enlarged from a DXF file that I down loaded from the internet. It is an electric adaptation of an old Earl Stahl design. I plan to use a Ryobi conversion engine that I am currently flying on an old 4 Star 120. The Magister has a flat bottom FF airfoil. I want to see how it flies before spending a lot of time building a more detailed FF conversion. I must admit that I seem to be much more inclined toward building than flying therefore when I do fly, I need some fairly easy to fly planes. Jim

RE: Midwest Texan Restoration
Rich, Sad to hear that you haven't flown the VAL yet. Although the SNJ is fully repaired, I have not flown it yet. Wife is facing some medical problems so have been staying around the house. Right now I am recovering a .40 size FW190 that I plans built several years ago. It was a great flyer and when I do get back to the field I hope to knock the rust off the warbird thumbs with it before I move on to the SNJ. I am also nevous about flying it myself until after the Warbird Fly-in at Bomber Field in Sept. I hope to take it there along with my Dynaflite SE5a. Several members of my club have Balsa USA 1/4 scale Fokker DRIs and we are hoping to do a Dawn Patrol with them. Jim

RE: Midwest Texan Restoration
Thanks for the encouragement guys. Maybe I will get the courage up to try her myself next time. In the meantime, I am recovering a plans built FW 190 .46 size that I built several years ago so that I can get some more warbird practice. Rich, have you flown that Val yet? I am planning to go to Bomber Field in September for the B17 flyin. Hope to see the VAl there. Jim

RE: another darn ryobi post (ryobi performance modification, analysis and comparison)
I had the same problem with an XYZ ignition on my Ryobi. I switched to RCeXl. Both are the same price at southeastrcengines.com I had my XYZ ignition screwed down to a plywood plate and the bottome cover broke off from the vibration. Buying from southeastrcengines.com gives you a warranty in the US. I prefer the easier starting on my Ryobi. Jim

RE: xyz cdi
I could never get it to tune properly with the timing set at 28 degrees. But with it set where I have it now, it tunes properly and runs great. Has real good vertical with my almost 15 lb 4 star 120. It will climb out on take off at around 60 degree angle with a MAS 18x10 prop. Starts easy and idles well. I think I like it just where it is. But I have no explanation for it. Maybe it is the ignition. It is an RcExl ignition. I had an XYZ ignition on it at one time and if I remember right, it ran at the 28 degree mark. BTW, the carb has a new overhaul kit in it. With new screens, fuel pump and gaskets, regulator, and needle. Jim

RE: xyz cdi
I went back and reset the timing using the method you guys described. I had it set around 15 degrees BTC when I started. When I set it at 28 degrees BTC, it was right where I had started. And at WOT it randomly missfire. I moved it back to about 20 degrees and it smoothed out and ran normally. Any explanations? Jim

RE: Midwest Texan Restoration
Well after getting my radio glitching problems cured by switching to Spektrum radio, my expert pilot was ready to give it a try yesterday. Performed the usual range checks, ran the engine up and down, pointed it down the runway and shot the coals to it. The right wheel came off after about 20 feet and was headed for the grass so my pilot gave it a little up and she was airborne. After trimming it out, she flew hands off at about half throttle so the Quadra 35 and MAS 18x12 was a good combo. I had two flap positions programmed, 3/4 with no elevator mix and full flaps with 10% down elevator mix. At the 3/4 and no elevator mix, the plane had no attitude change. With full flaps and down mix, she pitched down noticably. My pilot stated that she needed no mix on flaps. Now it was time to attempt a landing. My pilot brought it in as slow as possible and set it down gently on the remaining left wheel which promptly decided to come off as well. So now skidding down the runway on the axles and nose. Luckily it did not hit the grass or flip over. Only damage was the cowling was scraped up and the cowling mounts broke loose. When I retrieved the wheels and took the hubcaps off them, I discovered that they did not have any wheel collars on them. Later on, I remembered that while I was taking a break with the rebuild, I robbed the wheel collars off for another airplane and forgot to replace them. Boy was I lucky!!! The other aiplane has been retired and was hanging from my garage ceiling. When I got home, I took them off and put them back on the SNJ. I also epoxied the cowl mounts back in. So she should be ready to go again by this evening. I was really relieved that she flew. I was worried about the weight and the power but both turned out to be a none issue. When my pilot brought her in, she appeared to be rock steady at a fairly slow speed. I was really pleased. Now if I can keep her in one piece until September she will be coming with the Texarkana Fat Boys to Bomber Field. Jim

RE: Good airfoil choices for warbird designs?
I have heard a lot about the Clark Y airfoil but have never actually seen a picture of one. Is it similar to the flat bottom airfoils used in some free fllight models like the Earl Stahl models? If so, I would like to scale some of them up and build them. Can someone shows us novices to airfoils what a true Clark Y looks like? I stable easy flying model is what I would be looking for. Thanks Jim

RE: xyz cdi
With the back off the engine, I could see the crankshaft. I mounted my degree wheel on the crank shaft. I moved the crankshaft by eye to TDC by looking at it through the back of the engine. I then moved the crankshaft 28 degrees BTC and marked the hub at the spot where I wanted the magnet to be. I could have put the magnet and sensor anywhere on the case but I wanted it set at the very bottom of the engine. The hub was marked where it matches up to where I wanted the sensor to go with the crankshaft rotated the 28 dgrees BTC. Once again, I located tdc by looking at the crankshaft with the back plate off and the crank pin at the top of its travel. You are right in that it is not the most accurate method and a small amount of movement can be several degrees. That is why I learned that with this method it is necessary to fine tune afterwards when ready to start running the engine. There is also a variance of when the spark occurs when the magnet passes by the sensor as well that has to be adjusted for. I dont think it is possible to get it exact just from measuring because of the variances. Jim Dont worry about beating me up. If you have a better idea I would like to hear it. I am just a novice at this and am learning as I go along.

RE: xyz cdi
I did it while the back was still off the engine. I had decided that I wanted the sensor to be located on the bottom of the engine. I then placed the crank at TDC and rotated the crank 28 degrees using a degree wheel. I then marked my hub for the magnet where it matched up to where I wanted to mount the sensor. The engine is mounted inverted on my airplane so it is real easy to see the sensor and make adjustments. To get to the sweet spot, I moved the sensor a couple of degrees counterclockwise as seen from the front of the engine. Jim

RE: xyz cdi
I was having a problem with my Ryobi missing a little at WOT. No adjusting on the needles would change anything. I thought it was running rich. Was running an RCexl ignition set at 28 degrees. For last attempt, I advanced the timing a little bit. Made it worse. Retarded the timing a little bit pas where it was originally. Whole different engine. Ran so sweet I could have sworn it was a differernt engine. Have had a couple days flying time with it and no change still runs perfect. I have it spinning a MAS 18x10 classic prop and flying a rather heavy , been repaired several times, Sig 4 star 120. Thing weighs almost 15 pounds dry but the Ryobi with this set up pulls it great. Will do an outside loop from level flight at 3/4 throttle. I had about given up on this engine until I made that slight little change. So dont forget about adjusting timing a little also. It may take a little trial and error until you hit the sweet spot. Jim

RE: POULAN 42 cc CONVERSION HELP
I have a Poulan 25cc that I converted. It is running on XYZ electronic ignition and with a WT 324 carb. With an APC 16x8 I am getting 7100 rpms. Only mods are the larger carb, gutted out muffler with two 1/2 inch holes drilled in it, and the electronic ignition. Once I got the timing sorted out, it runs great. I use it to fly my Dynaflite SE5a. Flies it great. Had a ball flying it yesterday. Jim

RE: Dynaflite SE5a tail wheel/skid keeps ripping out?
Went to Wal Mart last night and browsed around the hardware section and found a 1" brass door hinge that might be strong enough to work. I started installing it last night. First I removed the balsa core in the tailskid and replaced it with plywood and glued the hinge in. I further plan to add some small bolts through it to hopefully keep it from pulling out. My home computer is on the fritz right now so can't take any pix. But here is a pic that I had saved on my work computer. Jim

RE: P-36 from P-40 ARF Bash
Thanks. I did not take any pictures, sadly. I had been flying this airplane for a year on an OS 91fx so it wasn't its first flight. However, it was the first flight as a gasser. Flew for about 5 minutes. Just long enough for me to really start loving it this way. I felt like it flew much better as a gasser than on glow. Of course I never got a chance to try a landing. Now I will have to find something else to put my G20 in. Jim

RE: Dynaflite SE5a tail wheel/skid keeps ripping out?
Mostly on grass. The kit is designed for the tailskid to be a part of the rudder and they cheated a little bit by adding a small wheel in the bottom. The rudder and skid are mounted with CA hinges. Well this arrangement ripped out on the first flight. I modified it by cutting the skid off the rudder and remounted the rudder with CA hinges. Then I mounted the skid with nylon hinges and connected the skid to the rudder with a spring similar to the way a sullivan tail wheel hooks up. Matter of fact that is where I got the spring. This lasted for about 10 flights. I dont have any pics of it that I can upload. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks JIm BTW, I really love flying this airplane and want to get this resolved in time to fly this weekend.

Dynaflite SE5a tail wheel/skid keeps ripping out?
When I was building my SE5, I had heard that the tailskid/tail wheel was a problem in the design of this kit. Well I now have first hand knowledge. I keep ripping out the tailskid/wheel on my SE5a. After the first time where it ripped out the rudder, I had made it a separate piece from the rudder and used a spring to attach it to the rudder so that it would not rip the rudder out. When I changed it, I used nylon hinges to attach the tailskid to the tail post. It lasted about 3 trips to the field before it ripped out. Does anyone know of a good modification that will fix this problem permanently? Thanks Jim

RE: P-36 from P-40 ARF Bash
I had a Hanger 9 P-40 that I wanted to switch to gas on so I also bought one of the P-36 cowls from Hobby People and converted it to a P-36. Powered it with a Zenoah G20 and a MAS 13x9 3 blade prop. On maiden yesterday, She took off Quickly and flew great right up until the time the stock plastic contol rod slipped off the elevator. Then it was watch it go striaght in. What was worse was that I was pretty high up and it took a long time to go in. Long enough for me to know that elevator was the only control that was none functional. Anyway it was a total loss. Hated it as I was really enjoying the flight. Goes to show that we should always replace those pastic control rod ends with some metal ones. Jim

RE: Best material to use on top of your work table
I use an old hollow core door left over from a home remodel. If I need to use a pin in it, I drill a pilot hole with a pinvise. I have been using this method for 5 or 6 years. And the same door as well. Probably about 7 models built on it. I would never use anything else. Jim

RE: My ST G2300 conversion
Agree with Rangerfredbob. Sounds like your fuel pressure regulator is getting turbulance. A common problem with these carbs. If it runs on the ground it should run in the air. Only thing that can cause this is the regulator. It is real easy to solder a 1/8 brass tube in the hole then attach a fuel hose to it and run it into the fuse away from the airflow. Should fix it. Another carb will most likely do the same thing. Jim
