RE: Maiden Day
Nice finished product. I like the trim scheme as well. Hope the flight went well.

I have a carden 35% Edge with a DLE 111, it's just fine. At 31#s it flies perfectly with plenty of pullout and will go verticle out of sight.
ORIGINAL: mrbigg Seen a cool video of Jesky a while back doing a nice IMAC style flight with very smooth snaps. Sounded like he was at full throttle and would pull it back, snap, back to full throttle and be back on his way. Very impressive and smooth. You have to fly these big planes smart, not wreckless.

RE: who has used the DLE 111 and the DA 100
I have a Da-100 and a DLE-111. The Da I bought used. It runs great. It's on a 35% aeroworks extra 260. With a little running start the engine will take the plane verticle out of sight. Out of a hover, you gotta wait on it a bit. The DA is bit hard to prime on first run of the day. I rebuilt the carburetor, but found a problem with the pushrod ( It had a flexible nyrod pushrod). I am in the process of moving the throttlew servo to the firewall with a short solid pushrod. i hope my problems are solved here. The plane comes in at 30# with fuel. The DLE is on a Carden Edge 540 35%. It has a little over 2 gallons thru it. I'm turning a mezlic 27x10 and the engine is a beast. What I've noticed about the DLE is that eats ignition batteries. I've been running a 4.8 nmhd 1800mh battery. On a full charge, the engine will nearly yank the firewall out. After 4 flights the engine acts like it goes lean. check the battery and it's low. The DLE needs at least a 6 volt system with high capacity, 2500mh. the Carden weighs 30#s dry, without fuel. They are both great engines. I cannot speak of longevity as my DLE is new. My DA is many years old. P.S. I had 2 da 50s break rings running Amsoil Dominator at 50:1
ORIGINAL: Tired Old Man Don't tell anyone, but it was ready to fly the moment you had it tuned. Be quiet though, that really is a secret;) Rod, bearing, crank, piston tolerance really isn't anythng a user can do much about. The permissable amount is established by the manufacturer in their component selection and machine quality. Essentially, if the engine doesn't come apart it's going to work ok. Obviously, some are tighter than others.
Set it a bit rich and break it in the air.

Cylinder Head Temps.
I have a DLE 111 on a carden Edge. When I bought my motor, troybuilt gave me a temperature gauge with it. Immediately after landing, (looking from the front), the right cylinder will read about 195, the left will read slightly above 200. If you give it about a minute, the right drops to the low 180s and the left to the low 190s. What is a reasonable temperature on cylinder heads?

RE: DLE 111 tuning question.
ORIGINAL: w8ye You are lean on the low speed for sure if it sags in flight, you are lean on the high speed too.
You nailed it. I went out yesterday with fresh mixed gas at 40:1. On the first flight the engine began to sag a bit. On second flight it died and I had to deadstick. It is lean on top and a tick lean on bottom.

Zenoahs need almost of full rotation to make the magneto fire.

trimming help with incidence
I have a Carden 35% edge I just finished. Problem: Under full or near full throttle, the airplane pulls to the belly and wants to dive downward. When you pull of the throttle, it flies true and straight.. My first conclusion is that the engine has down incidence. So I put a washer under the bottom mount, and flew it and it helped. I added another washer, now the engine clearly has upthrust. With the second washer, the problem is actually a little worse. I'm beginning to believe the engine neds to be lowered on the firewall. Any suggestions from any experienced builders? I did get an incedence meter and wings and elevators are perfect.

DLE 111 tuning question.
I have a DLE 111 on a carden and it has about 1 1/2 gallons of gas thru it. Today, i noticed that it is starting to really turn some RPM's. I noticed that when I start it up, when it's cold, it won't take throttle until it warms up about 30 seconds or more. I have a DA 100 that does the same thing. The DA is a well run in engine. My question, is this normal for these engines or am I a tick lean? If lean, is that top or bottom? On the DLE, is you let it idle a minute or two, it does develope a mid range "burble" that is usual for a slightly rich idle. Thanks for any tips.

RE: Flying Field Access
ORIGINAL: ira d
ORIGINAL: FrankHawks
ORIGINAL: tinner1 I polled a few members at my club field yesterday and one guy, (a YOUNG one, not and ''old timer'' I might add!) came up with a comment no one has mentioned yet. He said that if an AMA member was allowed access to any AMA sanctioned field, why join a club? Just join the AMA and fly where there are clubs until they ALL fail due to no one joining and maintaining the fields. I think that was a good point that seems to have not been mentioned here.....
This would easily be defeated by charging a landing fee for guests, for example 15 dollars per day.  Now the individual has incentive to join the club. And the club has incentive to allow guests.  Take it from an old timer.<img alt='''' src=''http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/biggrin.gif'' />
I think if a guest is already a member of a club be it local or otherwise they should not be charged a landing fee but I feel clubs should try to reciprocate with each other and that is one reason I think it would be good if the AMA could work with clubs on this.
In the perfect world the AMA shouldn't have to be involved in this at all. Why can't clubs recieve fellow brother pilots? Our club has a two flight per year rule on visitors. If you come as an out of town visitor to our club and you will be welcomed.

RE: P47 Top Flight Giant build
I might suggest beefing up the top skin of the wing from the inside as well as the leading edge stringer between the landing gear and the fuse. A hard landing and the edge of the fuse acts as a breakline and the wing breaks thru the wheel well forward and snaps the leading edge. I had to go back and put a hardwood strip between the inside of the leading edge and the front of the wing ribs. Then heavily glassed everything. I also suggest glassing the sides of the hardood ribs holding the landing gear mounts and trying to glass the mounts into the ribs or at least reinforcing the mounts from behind. It does not take much to pull out the landing gear if installed as per instructions. Mine came in at 23#s with a fuji BT-50 and glassed. It needed almost a pound in the nose to balance. With that engine flight performance is very scale. I've seen some fly with the Zenoah G-62 and that seems to be the best power to weight ratio. I am in the process of refitting mine and I'm going to the Zenoah. The plane flys very light, so don't be afraid to build it strong.

RE: Warbird Landings
Typically is you are landing a warbird with flaps, you will need to push a little down elevator to make the plane land. If you keep the flaps down, elevator trim up, and back off the throttle, you will get a nasty stall and probably spin. If I was landing in a 15 mph headwind, I would use no flaps at all, and use the elevator to control the decent while maintaining a little power into the wind. You will ALWAYS need to maintain some power when landing into a stiff headwind, chopping throttle at touchdown.
