RE: TAIL WHEEL for 1/2A
Astronomer1,how are yu my friend? I always just bult a skid for my wizzards, have 1 hanging in front of me now. When I wanted better taxi steering, I just bend a loop (to act as spring action) in a piece of wire of choice,a through hole in a piece of light ply attatched to the rear bottom of the fuselage for the pivot point and pressure point position. I bend the wire to follow up the rear of the rudderabout an inch from the bottom of the rudder. This way there is virtually no strain added to the rudder or servo as the steering takes place. This way,the steerable tail is pretty light compared to an added wheel, and you get at least 50% more steering action as with just a fuse skid style deal.

I would just post the pics, but I couldn`t figure out how so we are stuck with the links, sorry. I was thinking of buying the above kit as this thread got me really liking those classic lines I have always liked but for some reason never built . I have always been wanting the smaller sizes (020 and 010),and these days they are more practical than ever.

Well,I broke down and went to the only LHS(thisshop is the most liberal definition of the word possible) and got a spektrum AR6100e micro reciever for my Clancy aviation 'little plane that could" , a Lastick, or a ministick, whichever I pick to try to fly first. Still thinking on the acompanying servos and battery.

RE: INSTANT CURE TO WINTER BLUES! ONLY $235!!
ORIGINAL: DeviousDave I remember the first time I fired up a Cyclon back in 1997 or so.. It was quite an experience. Prior to running the Cyclon, the hottest 1/2A I had ever run was a VA MK. 1. I had mostly been running them with the stock timing as they were early (pre 2000 serial numbers were ported for smaller Russian toothpick props) was already wild and thought that 24,000 out of a 1/2A was good. Then I got a friend and I a Cyclon Top3 via a a group buy organized via a free-frighter. I didn't have a project lined up for it, but he had to run his right away. We mounted the engine to a block of wood with 2-56 screws and put it in a vice. We bubba'd up a bladder and grabbed an APC 5.5-2, the lit the fuse..... Holy Hell. It started out at a fast 2-4 break turning 25k, then slowly climbed thru a few adjustments of the needle. Then the ground started to tremble, the sun disappeared under a darkening sky, and women grabbed their children and ran. Then it woke up pissed off like Satan's spawn being delivered. The tach buried itself at 32k and we just kind of marveled, afraid to touch the needle anymore. Thankfully it gulped down the bladder quickly-it broke three of the four bolts it was mounted with. Sheer evil in a 1cc package.
C`mon now guys,STOPPITT!!!! Now you have me looking for a Cyclon!!! You see,I have this Harbor Freight p51-D mustang that just does not want to fly with the lecky combo they put in it.........begging for a screamer like this on its nose!!!

OK, so what`s a good , light servo for a COX010, post a link and I will go guineau pig on them for all to hear about. Light is a factor, and it will be a 3 servo, littlest plane that could courtessy of Clancy aviation plans as soon as I get the servos.

RE: Delta balancing
ORIGINAL: GREG DOE Todd, Sorry, I can't help with your question. I don't know any way to access old Model Airplane News construction articles. You could try contacting the magazine. It's possible someone in your local model airplane club might have a magazine library. If you can't find it PM (Personal Message) me with your address, and I'll send you a copy of the article. It looks like you are almost ready to fly, so the info in the article might not be critical to your success. Mine was clocked with a police radar gun at 126 mph down wind, and out of a steep dive. I had a lot of fun with them 35 years ago. I started a smaller version for an .020, but never finished it. Probably ought to finish it out electric?
ORIGINAL: RickP
ORIGINAL: skaliwag SIG 25 or 35% Add a little more Castor.
Ugh, Are you telling me I have to mix my own fuel? can't I just buy something off the shelf? is this any good? http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEPD2&P=8 RP
Sig makes good 1/2A fuels(but I have yet to investigate), glowplugboy does too from what I have heard. I always add some castor to the fuel I buy from the LHS because its not enough castor for 1/2A, even glowplugboy fuel is at the 17% castor mark,I prefer at least 20% castor and normally add to my fuels to bring thom up to 25% total lube from the 17% that the norvels require si my engines live long lives. I have used that hobbico 1/2A fuel years ago, but I spiked it with some castor just because it does not specify how much of the lube is castor oil and at 18%lube it is a little lower than I prefer. So if you add about 1/2-3/4 oz castor to that hobbico 8oz bottle you should be well lubed for a cox to live a long life. Using it straight may shorten engine life some, but there have been fuel discussions before regarding this matter too. I prefer to get my molneys worth from my engines as much as possible and like the peace of mind that I tried to do so. Your preferences are up to you, it should be ok as is to run hobbico 1/2A,fuel but the old cox fuel had more lube than that. I try to get as many years as possible out of my engines.

RE: Delta balancing
ORIGINAL: combatpigg Todd, you can layout your wing panel on a large surface and then project the phantom lines and criss-cross lines to find your MAC....or you can use the free CG calculator at Geistware. Once you find the MAC line, measure it's length [including the elevon], then multiply by .15 to find how far back from the leading edge that point is.. Find that point on both wing panels, then shoot a line across those 2 points that extends to the leading edges of both wing panels. Leave a couple marks so that you can easily find them when you do the "finger test".
I`m glad you brought this up Max_power, I have been needing to find the cg on a delta myself. My delta has been on the shelf for a couple years now, until I get my fligh skills up to flying a delta. RE: Reciever Battery Help
ORIGINAL: Andrew The GWS Naro is a parkflyer RX and has a claimed range of ~300 meters. My inclination would be to use a full range RX - price and weight are about the same as the Naro. I also have Bergs, but you might also check out the Corona RS410 II from [link=http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the-1180/CoronaRS410-Full/Detail]HeadsUp RC[/link]. Price is $11.50 plus a $2.50 crystal. Heads Up has a flat rate shipping of $2.00. 400 mAh batteries are sufficient for 1/2A. The thing you have to pay close attention to in these planes is weight - every gram counts. I've used Radical RC and also have several packs from Cheapbatterypacks. CBP can customize packs with regard to cell numbers, cell type, shape and connectors. A one ounce 400 mAh NiMH is $9.00 . The HS-55 is a common servo, but has a tiny nylon geartrain. Check out the Corona 929 MG - it's .1 oz heavier, but has a metal gear train and top ball bearing. andrew
I will have to hit these guys up for some decent rx packs for my 010 and 020 planes, thanks for the advice!! Onmy 049 planes I use the COX 7.2v220mah nimh packs from cox int., decent weight savings from a 4AAA set-up, and nice price. I have 1 in my radical r/c micro stick but it feels heavy, havn`t maidened it yet due to this. RE: Mini F-16 vintage project consideration
congrats on your decisions, vintage, nostalgis is where I would consider the motivation to lie for this project. I always wanted one myself, and it has remained "in the rear with the gear" file of projects all these years. there are plenty of DF units available for conversion from electric to glow. The pitch, length of the actual blades, and diameter all are considerations to get the optimal performance from a teedee 049 or 09. There may be a DF on the market that is more effecive than the original that was used back in the day for this type of project is what I am geting at. HobbyKing has a bunch i have been thinking of; a lot of them are available without the electric motor, unassembled at a low price. I`m keeping posted for my future similar project build. I tried a few diferent fans available for a smaller project as I posted previously. They were newer designs than this build, produced plenty of thrust considering, while they overloaded the 020`s,I just never got back to it once I used all the fans I had on hand. but, I have teedee 049`s and will get a 09 if this works ot best in your build. With the tiny radio gear, and the variety of DF`s available, a blast from the past like this is very possible, and could be much more effective than back in the day for a decent flying plane that will bring much satisfaction of this old "someday" project. I have too many on my list to do at the moment or i would be pitching in finding a decent powerplant. I may throw in helping find a decent fan for the teedee049 next month;but don`t wait on me.
ORIGINAL: RickP
ORIGINAL: combatpigg This is one reason why it makes more sense to go electric here.
Hello, Well common sense would have left this topic in 1981. I am reliving a child hood experience here. I've got a EDF on order shortly here. This thread will require some grey matter ;) RP
Exactly!! And plz do a build thread on it for those of us curious about the same for all these years, even if you never go beyond the tinkering stage ; there is a "nostalgia" factor here that keeps the remaining kid in "us" going on the old ideas we never got to explore in our youth. Or just keep this thread rolling with your progress.

RE: Mini F-16 vintage project consideration
I say there is only 1 way to answer the question that you have had all these years is to finally build it. The modern radio equipment of todat will ensure that it is lighter which should only help the flight characteritics out. I have always wanted to do a build like this but it remains on the back burner. I have tinkered around with a few small fans for the 020 sizes, but that was just tinkering around without spending any money on a variety of fans therefore poor results. I am watching to see whst you come up with. My teedee 049 awaits some decent findings. I think that the teedee09 was effective mostly due to swinging a larger prop than the 049,but the 049 actually was higher rpm`s than the 09 if I recall correctly. If you get a fan that would produce good thrust and a good fit for the model but the teedee049 is just not powerful enough to hit high rpm`s due to too much load imposed by the fan, try the 09 which handles a larger load.

Cool, thank you bernie. A teedee would be a hard sell at that, luckily there a lot of used ones floating around for sale and most parts are still available to keep teedee`s running at peak performance (( this is the hint to stock up and hoard parts before it`s too late like I am going to do)) And even add a carb to that old screamer to improve upon the original. I have not noticed a loss in rpm since adding the carb to my teedee051,she still pulls like the hulk in case you were thinking it

RE: Cox R/C Aircraft Collection
I have seen a few decent buys going on the cox planes on that auction site. I picked up the radio comtrolled cub trainer(peewee020) that I have been looking for for so long, about a week after I missed an auction for one a bit beat but going cheap;I think it went for $25 or so with the radio and peewee still there. Mine needed a little bit of "botched flight induced" maintenance, but nothing major. She is no looker, really showing her age with the cox fuel seemingly never cleaned off the foam; but she will fly again very soon weather willing!! I also got 2 (seperately) of the cox lazybee`s (1 for my son) that were worse for the wear, the first has a baldy warped wing, looks to have about an inch of washout its that bad. Letting her under some pressure to see if its reversible now. The second, (purchased to replace the first that was originally bought for my son) is not so bad, the worst of it is that someone didn`t like all the white foam apparently and decided to spraypaint it.. I`m glad this person decided to begin with the trailing edge ad had the sense to stop when the foam bubbled but before it totally desolved. I may just monokote over that to restore some flight ability there. Then I got the kids for Christmas a mint r/c ezbee, they are actually a decent trainer and should be much fun. Keep a sharp eye out guys, they are coming around for decent prices these days....

hfen, I guess they would not fly as well as a built up plane with all that plastic and all that foam adds up to weight compared to a few sticks of balsa. I`d bet the plastic nose of mine comes close to outweighing your whole fuse without the engine of course. the spackle idea is a good one, but I`mnot sure whick will weigh more, monokote or spackle, I would think the spackle?
