RE: Airframe for a Saito 72
There's nothing more "classy, classic and cool" than the 84.5" wingspan SIG 1/5 scale Piper J-3 Cub. Mine has a Saito .72 in it, and spins a 13x6 prop just right. Cruises at a click under 1/2 throttle (flying field is at 5,550' MSL) and has enough torque to pull it around with a nearly 1 lb video camera mounted in the cabin (right on the CG.) Laser cut kit, builds fast & true. Buy it, build it, fly it, love it. Lachlan

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread
I've been flying big glow planes for years. My favorite is my 1/5th scale J-3 Cub. My wife surprised me with a HZ Super Cub for Christmas. It's a great little airplane. I put Du-Bro park flyer skis on it and finally got a chance to fly it yesterday. It flies great, and is a lot of fun. It's my first electric ever. It lands great in powder, as long as you slow it down a bit, and touch the snow lightly. Set it down a little hard, and it'll sink too deep into the powder and stop fast! I did manage one takeoff from the snow, but it was a long run. Hardpack would make it a lot easier. I have a set of GWS floats for it, too. Can't wait til Spring, but what's the hurry since I have skis? [:)]
ORIGINAL: crankpin The DP Super Cub. I am building the Sig 1/5th scale J3 kit with Saito 90T. Need to get in air quicker.
I have that airplane with a Saito .72 on it. The .72 is almost too much, and I fly at a field elevation of 5,550' asl. That 90T is going to be nice, since it has a bit less power than a single .90, so you should be "just right." If it doesn't work out for you, let me know, because I want a twin for my SIG Cub! I'll buy your's, for a good price. [:)] Enjoy! Lachlan

I also plan to fit a Klett tail wheel unit, which will raise the tail a bit. So, if the prop clearance is tight to begin with...
13x8 MA 3-blade. Side-by-side comparison with a 14x6 2-blade showed that the 3-blade had more pull when going from slow to fast. It also makes the airplane land faster, too. Probably due to the smaller disk with a higher pitch. Tons of clearance below that prop. Lachlan

RE: SIG 1/5 scale J3-Cub
It will stay closed when you have it covered. At least mine did... anyway, once the airplane is completely built and covered, and you have glued the door and window hinges in, the window should stay closed just from the friction with the top of the door. I usually leave my window open, though, because it just looks right. I put a small latch on the bottom of the right wing panel to hold it open, like the real J-3. Funny, but I remember thinking the same thing when I built mine a year and a half ago. Lachlan

RE: Matt Chapman cap 580 .40 size
ORIGINAL: Abras I did 3 rates setup, two like the manual says and one with the maximum deflection I could get. The low rate is ridiculos, GP should not recommend that, the high rate is good. I'm having a problem with my maximum rate, when I give more elevon the plane snaps, I think is because one side of the elevon is different from the other, but I tried to put then equal, but it's impossible. Did anyone had this problem? Uh, that's why GP recommends the smaller throws, especially on the elevator. Caps don't need much elevator throw to get the wing to exceed the critical angle of attack, and stall one wing or the other. Hence, the snap... dial down your elevator a bit and you'll be happier. RE: My first aerial stills.
Resolution: 3.2 MP. Memory card: SD/MMC whatever size you want to pay for. Internal 16 MB storage. I bought a 128 MB card for $1995 that will hold about 160 pics at the camera's highest resolution, all the way down to 608 at it's most compressed format. More than I'll ever want to download at once, that's for sure. Weight of camera, with batteries: 5.7 oz. Auto shutoff after EIGHT MINUTES! That's quite a bit longer than the Aiptek and others. 3X digital zoom. 320x240 pixels of video at 15 frames/second, which would probably be shakey. I believe that 30 f/s is the best for video. I built a little mount for the camera that employs a servo connected to a spare channel to physically manipulate the shutter button. Price: $97 at WalMart. I'm sure that's the price for the Kodak CX7300 everywhere. Nice little camera for the price. Lachlan

My first aerial stills.
Went to Y'allMart yesterday and bought a Kodak CX7300 digital camera. Went back to my garage and built a mount for it and stuffed it into my SIG 1/5 scale J-3 Cub. Here are two pics from my first photo-flight. I think I will try setting the zoom on a x3 or x4 setting, and angle the cam down slightly to get a little less wing in the shot. I took the pics from inside the cabin with the Cub's window open. It looked cool flying that way, too. Lachlan

RE: Easiest/best hinge repair?
ORIGINAL: FlyNBHappy For me, I wouldn't rehinge unless you want that clean look again. What I've done in the past is to drill holes on both sides of the hinge. I use dental floss or 10lbs fishing string and just loop it together (up one side, down between the gap and up on other side, repeat with next set of holes) with some CA in each hole to hold it in place. Works better than re-hinging and much stronger and easier in my opinion.
That sounds pretty easy, too, but it's a nice, clean airplane that should retain that nice, clean look! :D Lachlan
