RE: e-flite mini edge 540
Thanks. I saw that. I live In Atlanta and know Chris who ownes Extreme Flight. Well I see him at the field and have talked with him at least. I am sure his new E Yak will fly great. All his planes do. But it is a profile. I got tiered of profiles. Looking for a a Non Profile built up mini Yak.

RE: e-flite mini edge 540
Well I am giving up on the ME. Tried everything. It just does not fly as good as the Mini Katana. Look good and is cheap, but performance is poor. I think it is in part the weight. Once you put a strong motor (Hacker A30 out runner) and a good Bat, (2100 TP Li Pi), maybe it is to heavy and to much wing loading. Or it could be all that flex in the wings. So to anyone who likes the ME or the MF, Do not try the Mini Katana unless you are ready to buy one. They outperform the ME and MF by a long shot. Now it is bigger, so more motor and bat is needed, but it is better made and it flies better. Later

Thanks for the info. I am all good in the foamy front. I fly the Kahoona. Been flying it for almost 2 years. It is not in production yet. About 1 month out. I think I have flown every foamy but the Yak you mention. I am sold on the Kahoona and not looking for another foamy. Just a build up mini yak. Thanks

Yes. And a Yak. Bigger though. 45 inches for the new Torq motor from extreme flight. It is almost to much for the Mini Katana. Need a bird 1 size larger.

Sean I totally agree. I am doing the same thing. Low rate, High rate, Low rate. I do believe the wing flex has something to do with the terrible snap. I could be wrong. My Mini Katana flies much better. Wings are much stiffer. I think even the Mini Funtana is better then the ME, and I don’t really like how it flies. Overall, I love the concept of these mini E’s. Right now my favorite is the Mini Katana. At least until someone comes out with a Mini YAK ! What is your favorite ? Thanks

I am an experienced Pilot. I know when a bird just has some weird tendencies. This is something much more. Can not figure it out. I have noticed more then average amount of wing flap. Holding the plan by the wing tips and bouncing it, lots of flex. Can not see anything broker or loose. Anyone else have this ? Hum ???

Hey guys. I just bought a Mini Edge. I put a Hacker A30 out runner direct drive in it powered by a TP 2100 bat. Good power. I am an experience flyer proficient at 3D. I have 2 Mini Katana’s and have flown the Mini Funtana. My problem with my edge is the SNAP. I have the CG in the range. Tried several CG setting. Currently at 62 MM. Even on the recommended deflection settings, this things snaps like no bird I have ever seen ? Everything looks straight on the plane. Anyone else having this problem ? Thanks.

RE: Extra 2X2
Correction. I previously stated that my 2X2 with the DA 50 came in at a total 15 lbs. Well I was wrong. After recalculating the weight of the fuel that was in it, the plane actually weighs right at 16 lbs (without fuel). So with a wing area of 1140 (assuming that is correct, someone in this forum said that is what it is) that puts the wing loading at 32.36 oz per SF ? I think this is correct. Again this is with 2 X 1950 main batts, 1 eng batt, heavy 4 inch dubro main tires and a heavy tail wheel setup. With the CG just behind the rear most recommended CG, it does not fly heavy. Just needs lots more Elv and Ail throws.

I got it landing great. No problem. Just have to trust it will will fly slow. And dah, high / low fuel CG the same. Tank near CG. Today we gang banged the 2x2. One of the best pilots I know. Any heli heads out there know Erik Larson. He is the best Heli and Plank Pilot I know. He flew and had the same opinion. Great but needs more Elv and Ail Deflection. I will work on that this week and try again next weekend.

RE: Extra 2X2
At the Tail heavy end of the range given in the book. Once I get a few more flights with low fuel to see how it handels witht the tank empty, then I will start move the CG to make it more tail heavy. I was surprized that to get the CG in the range of what the book says, you have to put the batteries up front. Ours are in front on the fuel tank. Even as we move the CG back, I am sure it will still be in front of the tank. We made a platform on the top of the fuse and strapped them down. Plaform is large enough to let us move the batts about 6 inches as needed.

RE: Extra 2X2
Well we had a full day of flying the 2X2 yesterday. Plan to do the same today. On the bright side, this thing actually weighs just a bit less then 15 pounds. I can’t believe it. We even used some pretty heavy 4 inch air filled Dubro main wheels, and a heavy duty tail wheel. (be careful putting a tail gear control spring in the rudder. It will split, we control ours from the rudder pull pull couplings). We also use a pretty heavy battery setup ( 2 x 1950 NM, plus a 1 x 1100 on eng). Anyway it is indeed light. It flies very true. Not one bit of trim anywhere. It is going to be a great IMAC and Pattern ship. Regarding 3D, well it has enough power. It is light enough, wing loading is low. But the Throws ??? Not enough. At least for all out 3D. Needs more down on Elv and more down on Ail. On the Elv, we have already modified the El to get more down. We are getting about 60 mm down. 85 mm would be 45 deg and that is what we need. Not having enough down on the el only effects a few 3D moves, like forward tumbles and waterfalls. It will do inverted flat spins but even that move would benefit from more down elv. For the ail throws, we can only get 50 mm down (up is fine on both ail and elv). For most moves it is fine. But for you hovering freaks out there, it takes full ail to stop the torque roll. We will keep looking for a solution for the throws. On the exhaust, we have the can resting on that bulkhead cutout. Put some fuel tubing on it to rest on. It is a bit loose so we then put a U bolt over the top of the can, just behind the bulkhead and ran the bolts through the landing gear. It’s tight. Now I am still running the header they (CA) sent us. There is no drop so there is an angle at the Teflon tube. As the folks at DA warned about, any angle on the tubing can be a problem. I am already getting some leakage. I am going to try and get a 3 piece header, get the drop without an angle, then have it soldered. Question ??? Do there composite fuselages cause radio interference ? I have my antenna inside a plastic tube running down the inside of the fuse. My rang check is a bit short and I am have some radio reception issues. Transmitting and Receiver where just fully checked out by Futaba. (actually Radio South). Oh yea, the settings in the book are a bit high for low rates. Too high for landings. I adjusted the ails to Low, Med, High, 30mm, 40mm, 50mm. (again 50 mm was the most we could get Down from the ails). For Elv, Low, Med, High, 20mm, 40mm, 60mm. (again 60 mm was the most we could get Down from the elv). Even at med, with full elv, it does snap. But landings a easy. Floats great. Has not wanted to snap or tip stall on landings yet. Biggest problem on landing so far is slowing it down. Need to start approached lower. Not much drag I guess. Something about this bird it just time for it to slow down. I can’t say enough for the DA. We have not touched the stock carb settings yet. Starts and Runs GREAT ! Overall flight rating, Great IMAC and Pattern. Good for basic and Medium 3D. Extreme 3D undetermined. Will require significant throw modifications. Not sure it is possible but still working. If anyone gets 45 Degrees down from Elv and Ail, please let me know how.

RE: Extra 2X2
Had my test flight today. Not only is there no way to get to the recommended throws on the Elevators, but nor can you get there on the ailerons. We severely modified the elevators just to get 40 degrees down. Manual says you can get 50 deg. Now I see we need to do the same for the ailerons. This is a serious flaw in the bird. They need to fix this before they ship anymore. But they won’t so I guess it is up to us to come up with modifications. Clearly CA does not care that the model can not deliver anywhere near the throws that the manual says it can without big modifications. Even then it will not fully. Other then the throw issues, she flies pretty well. Only 1 flight so far, it is was just a shake out. Will know more after this weekend. I know 1 thing. I am a horsepower junkie, and the DA 50 on this bird is over the top. Love that DA.

RE: Extra 2X2
Well that’s Brilliant !!! Un solder, adjust and re solder the header. Maybe CA should put that step in the Manual. Or at the very least tell their employees about so when you call they at least have that suggestion. Well to be fare, this is the first run of this product, but still, CA says this is the setup they fly. 1 question. With the Pipe being a 180 and a 90 deg parts, adjusting the 1 connection would put the exit end of the header at an angle wouldn’t it ? Although it appears that may work, to get the can back level again, doesn’t there have to be some bend in the Teflon tube ? I am told that can be a problem. If we had a header with an actual drop in it (rather then just angled down) that might work even better. Or one that was a 3 piece unit, then we could customize the fit, get the correct amount of drop and have the exit level, not at any angle. But still, your solution is better then what I have now and the best suggestion I have heard yet. So who’s bird is that in the Pics ? Who came up with the idea ? In all my calling and countless E Mails to CA tech support (you can’t get CA on the phone, only your sales rep) Tech support has never returned an E Mail. Only my sales rep, and he had no real suggestions. Just denied there was a problem. Acted as if this was the first time anyone had this problem. I love CA’s birds, but I am sure frustrated with the service (tech support). DA on the other hand has tried very hard to help. Good people over there at DA.

RE: Extra 2X2
Sure. I would send pics, but RCU won't let me. Maybe I have to be a senior member. Anyway, the problem is the Can is too long. Getting under the Wing tube is very tight. And because the header does not have a drop in it, you have to angle the can down, therefore resulting in the rear of the can sticking out the rather large hole you have to make in the bottom of the fuse. So the last 2 or 3 inches of the can sticks out of the fuse about 1/2 inch. Does not look nice. Also this means that the Teflon tubing is bent at an angel and I am told this might not hold up. It is interesting that in all the pics of the DA and can installation in the 2x2, show the hole in the fuse, before the can is installed and only show the can installed in shots where you can not see the area I am talking about. I worked with DA and they were very helpful but did not currently have a solution. CA says they fly the 2x2 with this setup ? So in the end it does not look good, the can is almost touching the wing tube and the Teflon connector is bent. I will be test flying my 2x2 this weekend. I guess we will see how it works. You might want to consider a Pitts style exhaust. Not sure it would work but there has to be a better solution then this.

RE: Extra 2X2
I have been working with CA and DA about the exhaust issue. If you read closely in the directions on page 22, they mention 2 optional exhaust cans. What I have (the TD75K) and one smaller in diameter the TD75. What we are planning to do is exchange the Can for a smaller one and exchange the header with one with a 50 MM Drop. The hope is (and I think it will) with the header drop it will reduce the angel of the can that is needed to clear the wing tube, and with the smaller diameter can, give us a little more room. CA and DA are being helpful in resolving this issue. I will advise when we get the new parts. On the Elevator problem, we have it up to almost 45 degrees down deflection now. Not easy though. If you take away about 1/8 from the Lip, increase the angel on where they meet on the end AND remove some of the foam form the “bottom leading edge of the Elevator where is was hitting the bottom trailing edge of the hor stab. There is some foam there you can remove.

RE: Extra 2X2
The Exhaust can sits on the wing tube ? This looks like a vibration issue. Sits at such an angle the rear of the can sticks out of the fuse ( from whole we made) No way to get even close to 45 Deg down from elv. Rotation pins on main wing have allot of slop. Lots of yellow over spray on the Red paint.

RE: Extra 2X2
Got mine. Seams are terrible. So bad that I will need to sand them down allot before I try to hide them with vinyl. The canopy and wheel pants seams are so bad I will have to repaint them. Even worse, there are what look like bubbles between the plane and the mold. At the very front of the plane. This will require some body work and paint. This is not shipping damage, just poor QA. This bird could not have been inspected. If they had more in stock, I would return this and order another, but they don’t and I don’t want to wait a month to see how it fly’s. As someone else mentioned, getting 45 deg down from the elevators is going to take some kind of modification. With the hinge line on Top, we will actually need more like 50 deg down to compensate, in order for good 3d flying. I don’t see this happening but will try with the help of my hired professional builder. Other then bad seams (worse then what they say to expect), flaws caused by molding issues and a serious problem with down elevator range, all else looks pretty good. This is an early batch. I am sure they will get better. If it flies as good as I hope, it will be worth it. But unless we can fix the elevators, it won’t. (at least not 3D).
