RE: OS 33GT Gasoline Engine for Pattern
I have not used any muffler on any of my gasoline engines so I don't have a first hand comparison. But judging from power/rpm numbers people are quoting for specific props on muffler, a pipe gives considerable boost in output over the quoted numbers. A pipe enables higher pitches to be used for the same rpm and diameter. OR larger diameter for the same pitch and rpm, but you will have to be careful with larger diameters because noise can increase fast. A pipe also significantly reduces the noise footprint over mufflers. Expect to be drowned out by any muffled engine flying. Couple a pipe with a 3 bladed prop and a soft mount and you will hear even a larger difference in noise footprint. I promised photos but just couldn't get to it last night. I may get to it tonight
I've often wondered as we lengthen our pipes to "soften" the transition (or "coming on the pipe) that we hit a point where ultimate horsepower is not increased with a tuned pipe. I ran an OS 1.40 on both a tuned pipe and a muffler with good success turning a 4 blade prop (and extremely quiet on both). I did notice the mid range wasn't as strong on the muffler, but the ultimate rpm's were pretty close to the pipe, which means the engine was producing similar ultimate HP. The muffler gave a more linear response to throttle.

RE: Demographics
I think more along the lines of Tony. Kids have not changed, we've just gotten older and crabbier! I've got 3 adult kids and all of them could focus and spend considerable time practicing things they were excited about when they were younger. My oldest daughter plays the piano, you talk about long, boring practices. My son is a fisherman, again boring to me, but he lives for it. But, none of my kids had any interest in my planes. I wouldn't be interested in pattern either, except for the guy that taught me to fly (Billly Bordan) flew pattern and was the best flier at our field. If it wasn't for him, I'd be flying IMAC or 3D. I'm pretty sure there is a life lesson here somewhere.

RE: F3A World Scores
I was up there sunday for the morning and got to watch all the US guys fly. Chip flew noticeably faster than a lot of the others. His rolling circle and loop were amazing to watch. All the fliers I saw in the morning were pretty darn good. I don't envy the judges. I did note that some of the europeans didn't seem to really snap their planes, they looked more like extremely fast rolls.

RE: Dead spot on throttle
I had the same trouble with my 9303 with a jeti 70 opti controller in my Miss Wind. It appears to cure itself if I plug in the battery with the throttle stick on high and the throttle trim all the way down. Not sure I understand what people mean by auto end points vs fixed end points?

RE: Sebart Miss Wind S 50E
just got the first flight in tonight. Flies great. Though for some reason I get to the field and the motor does not respond below about 1/3 throttle! Not sure what changed between home and the field. Being a a careful modeler, I flew it anyways! Anybody have any ideas on why my throttle changed?

jeti controller
One more question! I am using a 70 Opto plus Jeti controller for my Miss Wind with a Turnigy 50-65 motor (380 KV). A couple of years ago I used this in edf application very successfully. I do have the Jeti Programming card. It only has 5 options (besides battery type): High and low cut off voltage, Timing (low and high), Brake (on or off), Throttle curve (linear or logarith), Cut Off type (hard or slow down). I assume the new controllers have more options, what is the best way to set this up?

RE: Dean Connectors
I brought the batteries into work and had the controls guy show me how it's done, what solder to use and the resin. He has mulitple sizes of Weller units to choose from. He did it just like Pete said (pre-tin both components and then bring them together). He appears to use the solder to conduct the heat into the part, rather than heating the part and adding solder. Seems like the industry ought to standardize on a connector. Preferably, for guys like me, a connector that you can crimp onto the wire first to make soldering easier!

RE: Dean Connectors
Petec, Yes, sounds easy. I've done some smaller gage wire successfully, but I don't think my soldering iron is up to this larger gage.

Dean Connectors
OK, here's the problem. The turnigy batteries come with some bullet connectors and everything else I have is set up for Dean connectors. So how do you solder 10gage wire to Dean connectors? I've tried a couple of times without sucess. Is there some good way to crimp them together first?

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
We were at our place up north this weekend and I stopped by the Watervliet International Airport and met Brenner and got to watch his plane fly and another fellow who's name I didn't catch fly. The planes make an interesting noise, not like a twin, but it was not objectionable either. You certainly knew that it was different. The thing you really notice is the constant speed, especially in the verticals. Power was beyond adequate (at least from a bystanders viewpoint).

RE: Sebart Miss Wind S 50E
Andy, Just came up from the basement and did the same with the wheels (two washers on the inside to space them out seemed to work). I evidently loaned my incidence meter to someone as I can't seem to find it! I plan on putting the receiver underneath through the bottom wing openeing. The quality seems OK so far. I'm using some futaba S3114/3110's (I have two of each) in the wings and some older futaba coreless (S9304) for the rudder and elevator. I'm trying not to buy more servos or take the good ones out of one of my pattern planes.

RE: Sebart Miss Wind S 50E
andy, I'll check the incidence tomorrow. I'm pretty close, but the wheel pants need some serious trimming to allow the wheels to rotate! Might leave em off. What incidence should I aim for?

RE: Sebart Miss Wind S 50E
Couldn't resist and bought a Miss Wind kit while at Toledo. I was on automatic pilot during the build and promptly glued in the stab without having the elevator slipped in also! now I have to cut the rudder post to slip in the elevator.

RE: Prop size
thanks, I'll cycle them. I'm heading out of town for a week later today, so won't get it retested before I leave. I was reading 37 volts and they didn't drop down any taking full throttle load. It's a turnigy wood E prop, so it's pretty thin. I did go back and look and a lot of people are using 20 and 21" props with this motor on 10S

Prop size
I just went out and tested my Turnigy 230Kv Outrunner using a 10S, 4000 milliamp battery and a 19-10 prop. I was only pulling 45 amps and about 1500 watts, is this underpropped? I haven't charged the batteries yet and they were just in the as shipped charge. This is my first large electric.
ORIGINAL: BTerry Rich Lee makes them using the original molds. Email address is: richlee@directinet.com As I recall he did all of Dick Hanson's glass work anyway. The kit (glass fuse, wing/stab cores) was $285 last time I checked. I recognized my mother's handwriting on the phone number and remembered that is a scan of my dad's manual, circa 1988 or so. Thanks for posting it!
Anybody know if Rich Lee is still making the kits. An email to him has not been answered.

RE: Out of Business
So much for costs and savings. My point was, this is a hobby, an avocation. We do the prep and the flying because we love it.
I agree, I build because I enjoy it. and to have something a little out of the ordinary, even if it doesn't fly well (my Dr. Jekyl biplane for instance). But the hobby does keep changing. My dad's friends put their r/c equipment together from a Heathkit. I wouldn't even consider it. Though I'm sure there are some old timers out there who lament that the new kids don't understand how to build a radio. I was actually more thinking of mainstream planes with my earlier comments. I have been thinking about a Miss Wind biplane, I'm sure I couldn't build something similar for $400. I follow your logic when you start talking $3K airplanes.

RE: Out of Business
I think there are still people out there that can build. It just got easier and in a lot of ways cheaper to by an ARF. I've built numerous kits (including an Arch Nemesis!) and probably will continue to build a little, but the ARF's are now so good that it's hard to build in my basement to that level at a competitive price (if I count my time for more than about 50cents an hour).

Out of Business
I was leafing through my 1996 K-Factor Buyers Guide the other day looking for the ad for Dave Stuarts Ariel (I've got a line on one and just refreshing my memory on it). But what really came home is virtually every plane manufacturer from 1996 is out of business. Dave Stuart Models, K&A Models, d'best, Dick Hansen Models, Piorun Models, dave smith models, Advanced COmposite Concepts, R/CCity, Salient Designs, Gator, Aeroplan.... It's easier to report the people still in business (Radio South, Central Hobbies). I guess this is the way of cottage industries where an individual design and kits a design. Once the person retires or loses interest the company folds. Also for the young guys, there are some email addresses, but no web sites yet!
