RE: Avonds F-15
JSZ, post some pics. One of these days I will get an Avonds F-15 to do electric. I saw one fly waaaay back in the early 90s on a ramtech and fell in love with it.

RE: My Wood & Foam Bridi UFO Build
I used some sig nitrate over tissue a few years back and sprayed it with several different kinds of primers with no pinholes at all. Top coated with Dupont Centauri and all was well.

Blue pearl BA would be a sexy paint job. I have seen several EU1As done in BA colors and they all look great.

RE: Robart Landing gears Vs other ones for Ziroli P38
Robarts are good, much better than Century Jet used to be. I know that some folks have said that CJ has improved lately, but I have not had any of their products in 10 years. The current batch of Robarts seem to get worn and sloppy quicker than they used to. They do not break, or fail to function, they just seem to develop slop quicker these days. Sierra is probably the best looking and highest quality, but getting them can be troublesome at times.

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
I would think that a P-51 in any scheme should be allowed since they were designed to be a military plane while a J-3 was desinged as civilian plane first. It needs to be in OD or other military finishes to fly at Warbird meets. Technically, if you painted your Mustang like Lou IV, you can't fly it there since that is a civilian paint scheme. The original was OD not blue. For that matter, any warbird that is not currently in the US military inventory, flying today is in a "Civilian Scheme". Would they let my TF P-51 ARF fly? I chose to replace "Hurry Home Honey" with my Daughters' names. It is not a scale finish any longer. Granted I know that is taking it to the extreme, and I would be allowed to fly, but where do you draw the line??? The Miss America is just as much a Warbird as Moonbeam McSwine. They are both P-51s, they both are probably nearly 100% new meaning that nothing but a data plate is truly original, and they were both designed for the US Govt to defeat the Axis in WW2.

RE: Scale pattern plane?
Actually the 1/7 TF Mustang does fly pattern manuevers very well, however, the take off and landings on grass will net you low scores very quickly!! I have the ARF version with a YS 120 and it will do slow and point rolls almost like a pattern plane. Nice LARGE round loops, but it takes some rudder work to keep your heading true. In thick grass there is zero hope of landing without nosing over. I have shimmed the gear, moved the CG back etc etc with little positive effect.

RE: How to rejuvenate a long stored OS 1.08 ?
Junk/varnish stuck to the sleeve will cause overheating too. Varnish can build up on the sleeve and when the motor gets hot, the varnish gets sticky causing the engine to overheat. I had OS .46 that did this every 2-3 gallons of fuel. If it doesnt burn out, take a piece of 400 wet-or-dry wrapped around your finger and oil the sleeve up. Then while twisting your finger, run the sleeve up and down until you can see faint sanding marks. Some guys have used brake cylinder hones, but I was always afraid that it would remove too much material too quickly.

RE: How to rejuvenate a long stored OS 1.08 ?
Heat will free the engine the fastest and safest. I have used a MonoKote heat gun to free stuck carbs. Pull the carb off, heat it and unstick it and put the rest of the engine in the oven at the lowest setting for a bit. It will free up and then you can flush with fuel, oil, etc and then decide if you need bearings and such.

RE: TWM 'Stang with YS .91
Not a racer, but the YS 91AC was the easiest running and most reliable glow engine that I ever ran. 99% of the time, it started on the first bacl flip after priming. Adjust the valves once a year, run good quality fuel and an OS F or YS plug and enjoy!

RE: Painting with rustoleum
I would try this stuff. It single stage, sorta, but is supposedly just about everything proof. http://www.kbs-diamondfinish.com/ I would still dust the coats on after the Rustoleum has sat for several weeks. Read all of the warnings about the stuff, like do not pour from the can since when you put the top back it on it will permanently glue it shut.

RE: Piston Ring Question
most OS's that I have run across have a taper on the bottom oof the sleeve so that it compresses the ring has you push the sleeve down over the piston. After installing the crank, I put the piston and rod in, and then rotate it so the piston is at TDC. Usually you can see to make sure the ring is lined up with the anti-rotation pin. Once you are sure, begin wiggling the sleeve down over the piston and ring. I lube it up pretty good before I start all of this. With a new ring, it is all most impossible to get the sleeve over the piston if the ring is not lined up on the pin properly.

RE: Bridi Great Escape Wing Dihedral Question
The easiest way to sand that angle into the root is to jig the wing square and with the proper dihedral(in this case flat on the board upside down) and then use a sanding block against the edge of the workbench...see crude drawing below. I sand until my hard block is nice and flat on the frame of my workbench. Of course, this also means that your bench frame must be perpendicular to your dihedral angle. In other words if your dihedral angle calls for the top of the wing to be flat, then your bench top and bench frame must be at 90 degrees to one another so that when you sand the angle into the root, it is 90 degrees to the top surface of the wing. This also works for wings that require 2" of total dihedral, but you have to jig each panel to 1" at the tip. NOTE: this may not apply to the original poster since he is probably experienced builder, but somebody else might like the idea.

RE: Thorpe F-20 build
As a suggestion, next time attach your canopy during or before the glassing stage so that it can be faired in smoothly and allow you to mask the canopy frame to be painted with the plane. Also, RC-56 canopy glue is spectacular at holding canopies down.

RE: That nasty AT-6 Bounce
I have always landed them full flap, hold a good amount of power and let is sink naturally. SOmewhere around 2 feet from the touchdown, ease the power out and start pulling a bit of elevator until the wheels touch. It has to be wheel landed, not three pointed. It also helps to suck up the flaps right after touchdown as it will allow the tail to drop quicker.

RE: Resurrect A Phoenix 8
I have always thought that the 8 was the best looking of the series. I had a 5 several years ago and it flew great, my dad had an 8 when they were 'modern' and I loved that plane. Coincidentally, a bad battery killed them both, only 20 years apart.

RE: Fliteskin Spitfire
Did they send it Priority or Express? Otherwise I see that shipping should have been about $30.00 US for a first class 3 pound package, based on the HL site saying that motor weighed 35oz. Express was $75 and Priority was $60ish.

RE: Byro gear for p51 and parts
Robart made retracts for some of the Byron planes, mostly the ones that needed rotating gear and the T-28 for sure. The Mustang, P-47, Zero, F-15 and probably some others used Byron's plastic gear. Even the GeeBee and Ryan STA used the plastic struts on knurled stubs mounted in the wing.

RE: Plug-N-Play Wing's
Just be careful if you used normal RTV silicone. It gives off acidic fumes as it cures and can corrode the copper wire. You can get electronics silicone and I have even used hot melt glue. It stay flexible and sticks like mad to wire and connectors.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
ORIGINAL: Mustang Fever The elevator on mine started buzzing at full throttle (on the ground) so I shut it down and checked. All kinds of free movement in the elevator because the steel clevis pin had eaten out the hole in the elevator horn. Also, both the 2-56 size pushrods for elevator and rudder had started bending. Sheesh. Dodged one on that. I'm replacing them both with 4-40 size, and I'll be using a ball link on the elevator horn to eliminate the metal to metal contact. Necessary to cut a hole in at least one side of the fuse to get access.
that is what I was afraid would happen when I first assembled mine way back. I used a 4-40 pushrod and bolt on ball link. Luckily you could put things together much easier before the tail was attached.

RE: SOLARTEX Covering (Latex Paint)
I doubt that rustoleum clear is fuel proof. To be truly fuel proof you need a 2-part automotive urethane clear or an epoxy clear. Nelson's water based clear is fuel resistant up to 15% fuel I think and it gives a better 'painted fabric' look vs. the wet look auto clears.
