RE: Why does it do it?
More than one DL50 was having sputtering problems at our field and after finding the timing advanced 11 degs too far on one we set it back to 28, retuned, and it's ran great since. We later found a couple of others off by roughly the same amount and they were running quite bad as well. Setting the ignition timing and then retuning them fixed the problem with them as well. In each case with the DL's they sounded horrible in the low and mid range and ran pretty good at WOT. T.O.M., with you having so much dyno time running these engines maybe you can help explain why the 11 degs of extra advance would cause them to run sooooo rough in the low and mid range and then they clear right up after setting the timing and retuning the mixture.

RE: Throttle ratchet?
For most plank flying I prefer the ratchet but for hovering (prop hanging) and harrier stuff you run into the same issues as a heli. I have just learned to fly without the ratchet since I use the same radio for heli's and planes but I do prefer flying with the ratchet for normal aerobatic stuff.

RE: Why does it do it?
Check the ignition timing. It should be between 27 and 29 degs. Any more and it will run rough, any less and it will not make the power it should.

RE: 180FS Glow to Gas
I can't speak for ASP but my converted Saito 91 big did just fine at 22:1 fuel/oil. I took it apart when I put it back on glow, to clean and inspect, and found everything in the bottom end to be in absolutely mint condition. It had somewhere between 30 and 50 hours of run time on gasoline using Redline Two Racing Synthetic oil and Pennzoil Two Cycle Air Cooled. I think most will know the Pennz is mineral based and I couldn't tell the difference between the Redline and Pennz in performance. As I mentioned, it ran on both and looked perfect when I took it apart to inspect it before putting it back on glow. It is now powering an AeroWorks Extra 260 doing 3D and I need every last bit of power at the absolutely lowest weight possible. That is the reason for the conversion back to glow.

RE: NEW-ParkZone Sukhoi Su-26M-OFFICIAL THREAD
ORIGINAL: jettstarblue Thanks! I may get this this to fly right yet. It's the worst plane (RTF) I have ever encountered. Maybe I just got a bad one? There is NO WAY this thing will hover, or even close. It doesn't have enough power to stay in the air for more than a minute, and that's with a good heave for intial altittude.
Mine, on a 140 mah battery, will fly for over 10 mins doing mild aerobatics. (If I run a lot of full throttle then flight times come down but it's still close to 10 mins even then.) If you have watched the video ParkZone has of it flying in the gym then you have seen how mine flies. It sure sounds like something is wrong with yours, maybe the charger is bad and not fully charging? I would definitely return it for exchange because something isn't right. We have several folks at our field with them and all fly good. Most of the guys just do mild aerobatics like loops and rolls and stuff but they all have very good power compared to what you are describing. Hope you get it figured out because they cool little planes when they are right.

RE: AW 60-90 Extra 260 OS AX 120 2cyl
Cool, I am anxious to see some video of it. One could get the impression from other postings on this site that the little 260 isn't a good flyer. That's simply not true and as you're finding out, even at the higher weight and high altitude, it's a very capable 3D ship in the right hands. I'm thinking of looking around for a good used Saito 100 to put on mine. I only gain an oz in weight but the power increase is quite a bit so it should hover much better. Anyway, looking forward to the video.

RE: Saito expected RPM range
Saito 91 15% Byrons fuel 15X4W APC 9800 14X6 APC 10,100 14X6 MAS K Series 9700 These readings were NOT taken on the same day so they are just to get a ballpark comparison from. I am running a 14X6 MAS Scimitar wood on it now but I lost my notes with the tach readings so I'll try to retach it in the next couple of days and post back. Most of my other glow engines have turned less rpm's with wood props because they tend to flex less than composite props. If the cam timing is off by one tooth it can cause the rpm's to be low and the engine still seems to run OK, just with less power. Been there done that. Depending on which way it is off it may idle very rough but that is about all other than drinking fuel and no power.

RE: prop rpm question??
Yes sir, I do. It will hover and also will pull out but the pull-out is sooo sloooow that most times I just rock it over and fly it out. Don't get me wrong, the old 91 has treated me well and it's still strong considering it's 11 or 12 yrs old but the 260 is roughly 6.5 lbs and that's just a wee bit much for a 91 to hover. The 100 at only 1 more oz would be a better choice if one is buying an engine for this plane. If you already have the 91 like I did it will get the job done but that's about it. I know one fellow in my neck of the woods that runs a Saito 125 on his and likes it a bunch. I think the 125 is only like 2 or 3 oz heavier but I don't know that for sure. Good luck with yours.

RE: prop rpm question??
I have my Saito 91 on an AeroWorks Extra 260 weighing 6.5 lbs. The APC 15X4W pulls good but the spool-up is so slooooow that it is hard to get a stable hover. The woods, 14X6 MA Scimitar is pretty good but the XOAR is better, give a much much much faster spool-up and make for a much easier hover. Go to Paul Swanny's website (google it) and he highly recommends the XOAR props. He also makes one of the best 3D profiles on the planet (Mojo). I have yet to find anything that works better on my 50cc Extra than XOAR.

RE: Problems balancing wood props??
I use wood on my Saito 91. It gives me a faster spool-up for 3D stuff. I haven't noticed anything strange at all balancing the XOAR BeechWood and MA Scimitar woods. I run a 14X6 and sometimes a 15X4 on it. Once running it idles good but starting it can sometimes be a bear because of the prop being so light. As long as I use the electric starter it starts fine though, just not by hand.

RE: APC vs MA Props
Hi Jerry, Yep, some clubs do that around here but it's not really fair because out of a package of 10 supposedly identical props, usually (yes usually because there are surely exceptions) no two turn the exact same rpm. My radar gun also bears this out as the props exhibit 1 to 2 mph differences in their top speed even though they are marked with the same size and pitch and come from the same package. Also, most clubs do not tear down engines after every race nor do they weigh the planes. One half of an inch cut off the tips of the wing, the tip of the vertical, and the horizontal/elevator with one quarter inch cut so as to narrow the fuselage in height as well as width will increase speed enough to matter in ten laps. It is impossible to see with the naked eye. Without VERY strict tech inspections, after the races are complete, someone will eventually find a way to "bend" the rules. They won't outright cheat, just interpret the rules in a more liberal way. Think NASCAR. Ever see a "Stock" TT 40Pro turn over 18,000 with the stock muffler and supposedly everything inside "stock". It was running a 10" prop too. Something tells me "if" that engine had been torn down it wouldn't have passed the inspection. NO completely stock TT 40 is going to turn a 10 inch prop 18,000; not even close. Referencing your post 26 - In that one particular race, yes the "Slide Rule" flyer kicked some butt.

RE: aerovate 52cc twin
ORIGINAL: ace_drummond I have an Aerovate 52 twin and am flying it in an Aeroworks 50cc Extra. Wing span 86 inches. Wing Area 1305 Fuse Length 74'' (Rudder to Front of Cowl) Fuse Length 78'' (Rudder to Front of Spinner) Weight 16.5 to 18 lbs Cowl Width 9.5'' Rudder Height with Tail Wheel 21'' Engine 50 cc Running 22*8 XOAR and it gives great performance. Start easily, runs smoothly. I have several DA50's and this engine certainly is comparable in performance and maybe slightly stronger. Twin certainly stops the show atthe local field and once folks hear it run and see it fly - they are very impressed.
Hi Ace, I run a XOAR 23X8 and have in the past run the 22X8 on my AeroWorks Extra. Do you have any RPM numbers on the Aerovate twin with the 22X8?
