RE: Pen as a shaft sealer?
Hello, Well I'm not 100% sure, but from what I understand, if the top of the packing-seal (pen) is above the water-line inside the boat --a loose fit with a bit of petroleum jelly would probably work just fine. I think? Others may know better, as I'm not running a racer and it may be a different story when dealing with super-high RPMS and high torque. I hope this help, -J

As far as I know none. But I'm staring a new club in Massachusetts that would welcome it. So far I have only a hand full of people interested and we hope to incorporate smart weapons. Good luck to you. -J

Awesome Flabum, Well not that you almost got killed, but for the info! Surely, it may help save someone else's life. (Especially mine, as Murphy's Law follows me around like a black-cloud!) I'm glad you and your passengers are OK and no one was seriously hurt. Getting zonked off the head with an 800 pound motor sounds like one heck of a head-ache! RE: Calculations(will it float?)
GreenAce92 , Look, don't get discouraged and please, feel free to ask all the newbie questions you want. Everyone has to start somewhere! Quicksilvers explanation of buoyancy is even simpler than mine and I envy his simplicity. Also, I should have recognized that COG probably stands for Center of Gravity when discussing model building....Dolt! [:o] (But it is a small fishing boat too.) But hey, learning is fun too, and no one is expected to know everything. Thats why these forums are great! As far as "malcontents" are concerned, do your self a favor and try to ignore them. This is not the first time I have seen those who feel they have cornered the "Fun" factor in the hobby business. (Your not wasting anyone's time.) Banner-ad sponsors, many fellow hobbyist and even myself (for what it is worth) welcome your participation. Who knows you may be the making of a champ someday! Or at least spend a lot of $$ trying...lol. Hang in there, and not knowing is the first step toward learning! -J

I know there are people here who know a lot more about props than I do, cause I know little if nothing about them. (One thing about this place is people sure know how to go fast!) I never heard of the "cog" of a boat. However, I believe a COG is a small fishing boat. -J

RE: Calculations(will it float?)
I will try to keep it simple here, but:[8|] A boat floats, because the fluid in which it is floating offsets the downward pull of gravity and pushes it up. The scientific name for this force, which allows even immense objects to float in liquid, is known as buoyancy. Archimedes principle states that an object fully or partly immersed in a liquid is buoyed upward by a force equal to the weight of the liquid displaced by that object. The buoyancy of an object is related to its density. The density of an object is defined as, its mass divided by its volume. If the total area of an object makes contact with the water is large enough, the object floats. The object must make room for its own volume by pushing aside, or displacing, an equivalent volume of liquid. The object is exerting a downward force on the water and the water is therefore exerting a upward force on the object. Mercury for instance has greater density thus gives objects greater buoyancy. Objects of lesser density float on liquids of greater density. This explains why wood and styrofoam float on water, whereas concrete and steel sink. It also explains why it is possible to make boats out of steel or even concrete. As long as there are portions of the boat below the surface of the water (that are hollow) the effective density of the boat can be less than that of water even though the real density of the material it is made of is greater. Most of the space in the boat is taken up by air. The air makes the boat less dense than water. I hope this helps, -J

RE: reinforcing plastic for combat
Hello, From what I understand. Most battle boat hulls are made of doped-paper and not plastic. I think, one reason is for safety (to help prevent the projectile from dangerously ricocheting at an odd angle and creating potentially dangerous situations.) and the other reason is, that doped-paper can be repaired relatively easily. The reason I comment is, our new Battle-Boat-Club here in Massachusetts will be starting soon, and perhaps may be one of the most lenient of them all. (We hope to include self-guided weapons.) We had our first official meeting on May 21, 2007 and plastic hulls was one of the first questions asked! Please let me know what you find out. I'm very curious if there is a Battle-Boat club that allows plastic-hulls. Apparently the projectile velocity would have to be quite high to penetrate even 3/32" of plastic. We plan to do a lot of pre-testing to determine projectile velocities and material penetrations. (We want to create classes determined by muzzle velocity and projectile weight.) So far, doped paper appears to be the safest and most practical as no metal will be allowed in (Low powder load) torpedoes, rockets or depth charges and would be totally useless against plastic hulls. Of course, safety, and legality is number one and complete annihilation is number 2! [:D] Thanks, and good luck! -J

RE: Utilitarian Electric R/C Boat???
Hello, I'm not sure what you are towing and how much power you need, but this one is reasonably cost effective: [link]http://www.ambientweather.com/ps300113pbc.html[/link] The hull is 30" long and could easily tow another model boat. The trouble is the radio is cheap and the control is either full right, full left, straight. And the Prop is either full forward or full reverse. I ripped out the guts and made my own get-up. I hope this helps. -J

RE: Warheads
Neato! I'm curious could one use of those electric barbecue starters could be used? My new barbeque has a AA battery in it and requires very little force. And what do you use as the explosive compound? Does it actually explode to sink a boat or is just make a cloud of smoke? Thanks! P.S. The reason I ask is in the club I'm starting, I'm trying to make a more creative atmosphere to attract kids and hopefully keep them away from other influences. Kids like things that go bang, and yes adult supervision is important! I have already found some local sponsors and a someone who is willing for us to use his duck pond located on private property.

RE: Camera
Hi, The antenna is simply a piece of wire. Adding wire would probably not hurt anything, however the length of wire can also be related to the wave-length of the frequency. I wouldn't bother opening up the camera, just remove a bit of the insulator at the end and add wire to it. You should be able to solder to it if you are careful. If it doesn't work, you can simply unsolder it, and use some shrink tubing to seal it up again if desired. But it should work ok, however the range will not increase if that is what your looking to do. Good Luck! -J

Hi, Servos are basically small geared motors. The way controllers talk to them can be a bit difficult to understand depending on the electronics background you have. RE: rc
Thanks Umi_Ryuzuki, Tell me, what is the muzzle velocity of these BB's? It must be way more than what is needed to punch through paper if it breaks windshields. Yes eye safety is #1. I know even low velocity BB-guns hurt like the be-geezers at close range, and can easily take an eye out. High-velocity rifles approach .22 caliber rim-fire power and will penetrate skin even at long range. My pump-gun can kill a squirrel at 50 yards easy. It approaches 800 feet per second at the muzzle. Way more than what is needed for warship combat. My CO2 pistol with a 12 gram BBs is rated at 340 FPS for the first shot anyway. Still way more than required to punch through doped-paper, and would most likely just sting a little if it hit skin at more than 20 feet. (I don't think it could break a windshield.) I would guess at close range even 10-20 FPS would be enough and reasonably safe for warship combat? Glad to be back to civil conversation. [:)] Thanks! -J

RE: rc
Yep, Did KoolAidman say he was going to shoot at cars? Or this another assumption? You do not need a license to buy a BB-gun or other low-velocity projectile shooting toy in Massachusetts. [8|] Shooting at cars it certainly a crime! Owning a BB-gun or a sling-shot is not. And BTW: a blank cannon has a paper wad to compact the load and is not illegal in Massachusetts. (Unless there is a local noise or discharge ordinance.) Add a projectile with any significant weight or mass, thats another story. It then becomes a fire-arm. Shooting a blank wad in someones face is also a crime. Discretion is to be used by law enforcement. Do you really think a kid who is raising havoc by shooting his stratego or chess-men with a BB-gun should be charged with a crime? Shooting at cars and people is totally different! Perhaps we should just put the kids in jail first. Just in case! You can buy toy cannons or BB-gun or sling-shot or even a long-knife on line and they will ship to Massachusetts. No Problem. If you want you can hurt someone with a box of matches, or even a pillow. It doesn't make it illegal to own or purchase them. Like I said, intent is everything. Harping on the word havoc is ridiculous. A piece of pipe has the ability to shoot projectiles also? Or worse! Like I said, it is the intent that counts and he already said it was a poor choice of words.....I would not discourage Koolaidman from contacting the local police about firing a noise cannon. Yet another assumption! As a matter of fact it is a good idea to tell them and ask them if it is ok. Also parental supervision is also encouraged if under age. I guess some people really are malcontents...lol. Again, I rest my case. [:-] -J
