RE: Cermark SS-77 28% Edge 540 & SPE 43 Build thread
Thats wierd, I'm on my second one. Niether one of them had a coupling issue.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
None of the problems I have had, or heard of were actually in the box. All were external connection issues. If it runs fine, and doesnt act up at full throttle on the ground, or any setting in the air, I wouldnt mess with it. If it has issues, check the sensor lead connector, then the connections at the plug boot. That is my personal experience. If you have issues, and that doesnt' work, the SPE 26, 40, and 43 ignitions are programmed the same. So you will be able to replace it. If you get a 26, you will have to swap out the metal plug boot, but thats a piece of cake.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
I should have added that the poor connection in the sensor lead can cause a variety of firing issues. Constant firing, or firing too late being the bigger two. Suprisingly, it will run, but not very well.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
I'm running my SPE 43 with a brand new ignition today, and bamm, messes up in flight. Cutting out, missing, and sputtering. I narrowed it down to the sensor lead connector. When I got home, I cut the heat shrink off, and removed the pins from the connector, and found one of the wires broken at the pin, and the others only connected by a few strands. They were all severely overcrimped. Who ever assembled it used the wrong crimp set. I completely removed both connector halves, and did a direct solder connection putting individual shrink on each wire, and double shrinking the outer for added strength. When I ran the engine afterwards, I found that it had more power than it ever had before. So I got the previous ignition out of the closet. I replaced it for the exact same symptoms. Took its connector apart, and guess what I found, pins crimped too tight, and wires broken. Looks like I have a spare ignition. I got out an ignition that I replaced on an SPE 26, same reason, and yep, broken wires at the crimps. Pin crimping is not rocket science, but if they are too tight, the pins will cut the wire strands. I posted this here because the SPE 26 and 43, and the MLD 28 all have the same sensor connector. So if you notice these symptoms, dont pull your hair out, check the sensor lead. I knew each time the sensor leads were the problems, but thought it was in the lead not the connector. I have yet to see a problem with the CDI itself. It seems to almost always be the sensor lead, or, less commonly, the ignition lead going to the plug, shielding not having a good connection to the metal boot. It will cause arcing in the lead instead of the plug. Or the electrode coming off the spring clip in the soft inner boot. I have had no issues with the MLD ignition at all, but if I ever do, I know where I'm looking 1st :) Hope this helps someone, sorry tele, I know, a day late and a dollar short.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
Mid range will smooth out as you lean it, thats normal. As far as "shakey" it's a gasser 2 stroke, idle will vibrate, thats normal also. But as you lean low, that will ease up also. A rich idle is always rougher. tele, as far as ratio, that is what Cermark recommends. AMSoil backs it up by covering your engine if it doesnt work. There are alot of varying opinions on the Sabre 100:1 out there. Some are even calling sabre an engine killer. I ran mine at 100:1 for a while, and it was fine. Broke in at 50:1. I have had the engine apart, and the cylinder, and piston look great. No bearing pieces in the case. So all in all, 100:1 seems ok so far. I have since reduced to 80:1, and found the engine to be more responsive, smoother, and would bet if I put a tach on it, I'm getting more rpm's. AMSoil is pretty thick at anything below 80:1, so if your going to run 50:1, I would recommend Stihl HP Ultra. With my new DLE 55, I will be running the Stihl in everything, not carrying more than 1 gas can. The amsoil definately runs clean, going to miss that. My opinion is that the AMSoil is fine, I would keep using it, but DL recommends 30:1, and saber at that ratio would be like molases.

RE: Pilot RC 30% Extra 260
Got it today!!!!! The pictures on the website dont even come close to doing this plane justice. It is BAD A$$!!!!!!!! This is my first 50cc plane, up until now its been 28%, but this plane was packed alot better than anything I have had shipped before. Double boxed, but the outer box is lined with sheets of pressboard. I think you would have to run over it with a truck to damage during shipping:) It takes the "quick build" concept to a new level. Everything is hinged. Rudder is removeable. Fuel tank, and filler system is already installed, as are the pull pull cables. All the control horns are installed. Covering is phenominal. I have built alot of arf's, mine and others. This planes quality is absolutely top notch. I have not started the assembly yet, and these are initial impressions, but I looked it over pretty good. I'll post some pics soon. Sorry, wont have any of packaging, was too excited.

Here is an HD video. Hit start, then pause, watch the grey bar go up a little, then hit play. It is actual HD video, unlike youtube, so you have to let it buffer a little, so it doesnt do the stop and go thing. Remeber to go full screen. http://www.vimeo.com/6582384

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
The interference is almost definately from the boot. Try putting the MLD metal boot on there. The shielding just solders to the boot. Leave the existing soft boot if you can. I doubt the paint is an issue, but rustoleum???????????? I just put a couple of drops of alcohol in a small cup of epoxy and coat the firewall and engine box with that, comes out looking like glass. I was worried about these issues on my SPE, so I ordered another stock ignition. My MLD ignition has been flawless. You will get bad ignitions occasionally from any manufacturer. The MLD ignition seems the perfect match for the 28, why didnt you just get a new stock one, should have been free, you were under warranty werent you?

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
The stock setting, in my opinion, would be where I started. You know you will be close. The magnet tells the CDI where the crank/piston is. Unless there is some resistance delay in the CDI, I would think you would want engine manufacturer's timing, but I'm by no means a CDI expert. It's not going to hurt anything, you will be fine what ever route you take. The engine will tell you if it likes it or not :)

On the case, mark where the center of the existing sensor is, the line the center of the new sensor up with your mark. If you have to adjust at all, it will be minor.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
Vess or Menz are the only props I will ever use again, Vess being my favorite. Xoar is ok, but barely. Zinger makes a great paint stir stick. On the serial numbers, sorry dont know. But I do know that if you bought it at Cermark, the have all the serial numbers on file that they have sold. If you have to send it in to them for repairs, it will not be an issue. I'm sure Steven will read this and tell you which one is the serial number though.

Sorry to butt in, but thats no where near enough prop, you need to slow that thing way down. Overspeeding during break in is very very bad. You will gain rpms in the air, dont forget.

RE: Fliton Extra 330s 120C Build Thread
No reason at all. Unless you dont want to manually use the choke. Some opt for the choke servo as an engine kill, or an easier way to choke for starting, or both. It would be nice, but I went for less weight. An ounce here, 2 oz there, it all adds up. Plus the optical kill has the safety thing covered.

RE: Fliton Extra 330s 120C Build Thread
Hitec HS-81 or HS-225MG should work nicely. Or if you have a DS-821 laying around, would be ok too. I use the choke manually, and got the optical ignition kill. Lighter and safer.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
They have sensor mounting kits for some engines. Dont panic yet, you may be able to just change the connector on your sensor lead. Or for that matter, just do a direct connection (solder). Timing will not change much, if any. Thats no big deal. The CDI just fires when its told to. As long as you got the one for the plug we are using, it should work out. Thats the real factor.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
Be careful with the scoop. I think your going to find it leans you out, alot, if its directly connected to your stack. You have tried it with the cowl off, I am still betting airflow is not your problem. Did Rcexcel have 1 for the 28? If not, you will probably have a sensor lead connection to deal with, unless they have a mount for their supplied sensor. Just some issues I ran into trying to find alternate CDI's for the SPE 43.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
Its a Melody ignition. MLD= Melody. From what I understand, the guy branched off from SPE. tele, you need a new ignition, I would bet money on it. Or your ignition battery switch, or posibly a connection issue between them. A faulty CDI or shorting lead can be fine one time, and crappy the next. Almost always fine on the ground, and showing itself in the air. A problem with your carb, or intake airflow would always be visible, not ok one day and fubar the next. I'm not sure RCexcel has an ignition for the MLD yet. They have one for the SPE 26, but they dont have one for the SPE 43.
