RE: NEW!!!! Great Planes Cirrus SR22 46!!!!!
This Cirrus SR-22 looks like a nice scale model.[:D] Just talked to Tower Hobbies. It won't be arriving until late June. Price will be $349.95 I'm still trying to decide if I want to wait to get the new Great Planes version, or get the new Hangar 9 version. The Hangar 9 version was released last week. It has a larger wingspan at (I think) 97 inches. Joe M.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
ORIGINAL: ThunderBoat42 Wing is almost complete...  went with the Robart 590E electric retracts and struts.  Should be here any day.   Using the Ternigy servo slowing 3 channel unit on the flaps to slow deployment to mid and full.   This would also work great with the mechanical retracts and 2 retract servo's.  Receiver wire plugs into it and has three servo lead out, each with it's own rate adjustment.     Ordered this Sullivan glow driver that's fully digital.  Will take a 1.2 to 12v batttery with built in regulator.  Flashes when the plug is not at it's peak or compromised.  digital adjustment on point is cool too with the throttle servo going through it.   <a href=''http://www.ebay.com/itm/390538550197?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649''>http://www.ebay.com/itm/390538550197?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 This will be fun to test out.
Glad to see you're having fun with your 'Stang ![:D] Robart 590 E's ? Were they a pretty close fit into the supplied wheel wells ? I have'nt flown mine in quite a while. Just pulled her down from the ceiling, dusted her off and threw her on the batt charger. The only advice I can give you for the first flight is: when landing, don't try to float her in at or near engine idle speed. The wing on this particular plane doesn't seem to like slow speeds.........slow speed invites a wing stall. Keep some power on until the main wheels touch the ground, then gently feed in some up elevator to get the tail wheel to settle onto the ground. Don't ask me how I know this.[X(][:o][:(] As far as takeoffs and general flying performance, you couldn't ask for a better plane.[8D] Joe M.

Was a little nervous, but got in the maiden today plus one additional flight. A real nice, stable flyer ! Next I think I’ll move the CG a little more tail heavy to suit my tastes. Has anybody experimented with CG, or are you all using the recommended 110 mm (4 3/8) ? Joe M.
ORIGINAL: MTK I run a regulated voltage supply to my CDI at 5.4 volts.
Hi Matt, 5.4 volts ? I never thought of using a regulator. This is because it isn't mentioned in the O.S. owners manual. You would think if it required a voltage regulator they would have mentioned it ??[:o] Installing a regulated voltage supply would have saved me a lot of grief, time and money. Of course Hobby Services (the O.S. repair facility) says it will run OK on my 6.0 volt ignition battery.[:@][:@] Joe M.

RE: OS GT33 33cc gasser
Been flying my Great Planes Big Stik for a few months with the GT33. Have had a backfiring problem with it since day one that seems to be getting progressively worse. The engine starts very easy, transition both up and down is great, and she idles down nice. On my first flight of the day she runs great with no backfiring. On the second flight she may backfire once or twice. On the third flight she is backfiring about every 20-30 seconds. On the fourth flight she is embarrassing me ! Not just a little backfire but a big KA-BOOM, KA-POW ! The backfiring seems to get worse as the engine (or ignition module) gets warmer on each flight. I have tried numerous spark plugs with different gaps, still backfires. I know it’s not the carb or carb adjustment because she runs too great. I took the carb apart anyway......no dirt, no sludge, looked like brand new. More wasted money on a carb kit as the exact same backfiring condition exists. It’s as if the battery voltage is being momentarily cut off. As it warms up it gets much worse ???? I don’t have anyway of checking the ignition module or the crankshaft sensor so first I replaced the engine kill switch (an MPI/MAX unit). I also replaced the jumper harness between the ign. module and the kill switch. A new replacement 6-volt, 5-cell 2500mah ignition battery was installed as I was thinking maybe the battery may have an intermittent open circuit. The exact same backfiring condition still exists. Ordered a new RCEXL module and crankshaft sensor and installed them. Was a waste of money as the exact same condition exists. Again, first flight OK but then.......... I was complaining to my fellow flyers about this long-term problem and mentioned I may just pitch this engine into a bonfire ! Then one of my fellow flyers mentions the RCEXL module does not like any more than 4.8 volts. I said: But they are recommending 4.8 up to 7.4 volts ? He then tells me he has cured the backfiring in the past by simply changing to a 4.8 volt pack. I was a little skeptical, but down to the local hobby shop I go and picked up a new 4.8 volt NiMh 2000mah ignition battery. Just amazing........after all of the time spent with this engine, absolutely no more backfiring !! All I can think of is my ignition module is mounted inside the fuselage and not in any airstream. This would explain why the problem got worse with each flight as the module was warming up more than usual due to the higher battery voltage ?? I never took any before and after temps. of the module so I’ll probably never know for sure. Your comments please ? Joe M.

Hi Fellahs, When I first saw this model a while back, I thought it was just another foamie.....don’t know where/why I came up with this idea ?? Then I spotted it at Horizon Hobby and read all of the specs. Looks good.........all built up wood. I find myself taking out my Seagul Dual Ace quite often. It’s one of my high-mileage twins. What a great, dependable flyer ! If this Seagul Comanche flies as good as my Seagul Dual Ace, I’ll be a happy camper ! I have a pair of broken-in OS .72 4-strokers but don’t know (yet) if they will fit. I should be ordering my Comanche tomorrow. Joe M.
ORIGINAL: dale691 The twin otter looks awesome. and I love the 3 blade props. I'm a bit of an electric novice, the motor i'm looking at is an Hobby king easy match 32. It is 600kv not sure what difference that will make to prop selection? I bet the hangar 9 plane was a pleasure to put together? Also Joe, are those Master Airscrew props just normal 3 bladders, not electric specific?
Thanks for the compliment. The 3-blader's are not electric. At the time all I could get were much heavier non-electric props. Consequently, the motors pull a higher amp draw, especially at take off. That's why I had to use 80amp ESC's. Joe M.

RE: Scoop! Hangar 9 Phoenix 7...ARF!!!
ORIGINAL: Huang So I received the Robart electric nose gear last week and immediately realized (contrary to what their customer service stated at the time) that this nose gear can't operate alone. The robart e-retracts do not work like a servo. The retract only has +/- wires for the motor; it has no control unit or signal line. It needs to be plugged into a ''control box'' which is an electrical unit little bit bigger than the size of an old PCM receiver. The list price of a control unit? Another $107 large. The good about this setup is it will likely be very resistant to vibration as the gear itself does not contain a PCB or other electrical components except the motor that drives the worm gear. I had a chance to chat with one of the engineers at Robart, he stated that a lot of the other units had issues with vibration so they went with the separate control box mounted inside the plane away from the elements. If you purchase the mains the control box is included, so if going with Robart you are best to get the entire tricycle unit ($$$). The plus side is the unit looks very well made. If you read their press release, Robart uses their existing retract mechanism, and Down & Locked makes the electrical unit, so they're probably similar to the Down & Locked that Joe has. Looks like the options for e-retracts so far are: (1) shell out $400 for a set of Robarts which are designed to take vibration (2) spend $185 for e-flites, silicon the rails and hope for the best, or (3) spend $45 for three of Chinatracts from PZ and make the steering mechanism yourself...
I hear Ya. ! I'd much rather spend a few extra bucks for something that I can depend on. I agree with your comment about EFlite vibration problems. I have spent a lot of bucks on a lot of EFlite products and they are (for the most part) good products. That is, except for the electric retracts. I simply can't trust them anymore. As I stated earlier I have six sets of them, and during every flight I'm wondering if they will come back down. Maybe they can print this on the EFlite retract shipping box: What goes up, must come down.........except for EFlite electric retracts.[:)] In my own opinion, until they do a major design change, the EFlite retracts should only be used on electric powered planes up to about 10-11 pounds. Another plus when using a separate Down & Locked control unit: if you have gear doors, you can program in a timed, sequential gear door opening and closing. Joe M.

RE: Black Horse Shrike Commander
ORIGINAL: Jas65  Hello Been quitet for a while in this thread, mine plane is in the ending phase, did like kc forsythe and went for the lander e-retracts,i have run in to a smaller problem and that is that the front retract didnt manage to close the four hatches, this because the hinges was glued wrong in the factory, for now i have ripped them out and only use the two front hatches,if everything goes like planned with the maiden im gone totally Redo the front hatch, maybe gone get a sequenser or some else solution, the main hatches works just fine,im also have put a 11g servo to run the steering in the front comparement to the get rid of the long pushrod running thru the fuse connected to the rudder servo, gone mix it in with the radio (slave with rudder),have ordered some 14 awg cables and connectors to hook upp the esc's with the motors. Cheers for now /Jack
Hello Jack, In answer to your first question about the rudder hookup, I still haven't got to that part of the assembly. Maybe somone else can help you out. The gear doors ? As I stated earlier, all of my gear doors were installed with no thought at all to any quality control.......a very shabby job ![:'(] They were very difficult to repair, so I removed all of them.[:@] I'm also planning on using a separate steering servo because I like having the option of doing separate adjustments to the rudder and steering. My build has been painfully slow because it's summertime here, so I spend more time flying instead of building. The only thing I've finished up is both of the wing assemblies (motors, ESC's, Props, spinners, ailerons, retracts, wheels/tires, cowls and wiring). I fabricated both of my motor mounts. Joe M.

RE: Scoop! Hangar 9 Phoenix 7...ARF!!!
I believe I'm all through with EFlite electric retracts. I have six sets of them. Hey..........at least they are fairly consistant as five of six sets have failed. [:'(][:@] Five of these planes are all equipped with glow motors. The only retract set that's still working for me without any problems is on my twin electric powered EFlite Deuces Wild. One thing I've discovered is the EFlite's sure don't like any kind of vibration as witnessed by the broken wires in the picture. This wire failure has happened twice. Once on my Hangar 9 Jackal and again on my Phoenix 7. I used some clear silicone applied to the wires (see picture) and so far the wires haven't broken, but, each of the units has still failed to work at times. Sooooooo, back to Horizon they went. The last set I sent to them the tech said if I used that "glue" (glue ??) anymore, my warranty will be void. I noticed on the latest versions of the EFlite retracts they are now using some kind of a hard "China" glue to keep these wires from breaking. I have a set of Down & Locked electric retracts on a Top Flite 310 Cessna twin. They were a little pricey, but are still working without any problems. The electrical control unit is remote on the Down & Locked retracts. On this Cessna I have this retract electrical control unit soft-mounted. The control unit on the EFlites is mounted directly into the retracts. This could be part of the problem with the EFlites. One of the Horizon techs said maybe my props aren't balanced correctly. I said, hey, I've been in this hobby for 40+ years and I do believe I know how to balance a prop and spinner. Joe M.
ORIGINAL: fadi6149
Hi Joe, What prop size u have with the 65AX? did you have to modify the engine mount location at the level of the firewall? Thanks Fadi
Hi fadi, I started off with a 12x7 APC and then a 12x6 APC. The 12x6 APC worked the best of the two, but due to its length, it was constantly cutting the grass. Then I tried a shorter 11x8 APC. This has worked out the best. As far as the engine mount, the supplied mount was used. Yes, the orginal location on the firewall was slightly changed. I can't really see it now or photograph it, but from what I remember, I CA'd a pair of hardwood dowls into two of the original engine mount holes on the firewall. They were then re-drilled and blind nuts were installed. No big deal. The EFlite electric retracts ? Yeah, for me it's been either a love or hate relationship with them. I had to look around the shop and I counted 6 sets of them. On three of my planes they have worked flawlessly, but on the other three planes they have been very undependable........they seem to work when they want to. I can't remember how many times I have either returned a set of them back to my local hobby shop, or returned them to Horizon Hobby for repair.[:'(] Every one I've met using these retracts seems to have had a problem with them. They all tell me usually they stop working for no apparent reason ??[:'(] I smile and say "I know what you mean". For my next set of retracts I'll probably try out the new Robarts electrics. Joe M.
Joe, My OS33GT muffler is for sale. It is brand new, never used, 65$ delivered to your door. Please PM me if intersted. Let me suggest that you first reface the muffler flange. Put a piece of wet-or-dry paper on a piece of glass and run the muffler flange on that. You should get all the high spots removed. Then definitely use Ultra Copper without a gasket. Also use Ul;tra Copper on the bolts and torque them tight. Let this cure for a day before using. You may use Nord-Locs under the bolts heads but isn't always necessary; it is added insurance.
Hi Matt, Thanks for the offer, but as I mentioned I ALMOST lost the muffler. As soon as I get my new bolts and washers I'm going to use stainless safety wire on the muffler. RE: O.S. GT33 Muffler
Pete, If I would have designed those muffler bolts, I first would have increased the size up to 6mm. I would then use 6mm grade-8 studs with threads at both ends and a shoulder in the mid-section. This shoulder would fit snugly into the muffler mounting holes. The stud would be designed to bottom out and be tightened into the cylinder head. Top it off with a set of Nord-Lock washers and then a 6mm crimp nut (an oval shaped nut that has been slightly crushed). A crimp nut will absoluteley never unscrew due to vibration. The only problem with crimp nuts is they can't be used more than a few times. They tend to tear up threads. Wherever I use nuts anywhere on my planes they are always Nylon-insert lock nuts, but they don't work very well on exhaust parts as the Nylon is prone to melting. Joe M.
