RE: Old Question... Is this a warbird?
Hey Guys, Thanks!! Great input !! I have created an info sheet for the Minimoa to provide to warbird event PA announcers. Using your thoughts and the documentation I gleaned from the interwebs, I was able to create a nice presentation for any event the Mini may attend. I have CD'd several warbird events and I would allow the Minimoa to fly, however I'm biased[:D] I think the key is to respect the event. If there is opportunity and it works... Great.... If not, then people will enjoy seeing it. Larry, I understand completely. Thanks for everyone's input!! Here are a couple of our events from the last 2 years. The ME-163, ME-108 and FW-190 are mine. My Hurricane is in there also I think?? Old Question... Is this a warbird?
Hey Guys, I have lots of proper warbirds and have CD'd warbird events but I'm just trying to get a feel for the reaction I may get if I brought the Minimoa as one of my fleet to a warbird event. I guess a couple of caveat's, I'm was thinking of the standard warbird event at local clubs not the high end events. While I would enjoy showing it off in the context of a warbird event, I would also look to the CD for when would be a good time/area of the field to fly it. I'm thinking when there was a quiet moment I could get into the air and head out to a corner, generally above where the typical warbird flys and try to find a thermal or two. If it worked I could stay up for a bit, if not I would just be another plane coming back into the pattern to land. It would be nice to show the Minimoa off, but I don't want to be "that guy" that disturbs the flow of an event. I will say that the power system in this Minimoa pulls it to altitude with authority. Enough that it would loop on it's own at full throttle due to the high lift wing and no down thrust... I have to hold almost full down to climb at 45degrees nose high at about 3/4 throttle. With that in mind, is this a warbird? and would you like seeing it at an event? Minimoa 2a Info Minimoa Mo 2a (1937) - Two seat Version Registered as D-15-923, this was a the only two seater glider to be built from the initial requirement for two. The second seat was built between the wings, behind the main wing spar and the fuselage deepened to give more rear cockpit room. The nose was lengthened for adjustment of C.of G. The fuselage was 0.26 m. longer than the standard Minimoa. This glider took part in the 1937 Rhön Contest (but had to be abandoned because its pilot, Hirth, had pains in his injured leg), and later visited England behind a Klemm 26. Minimoa pilots were Hanna Reitsch and Eva Schmidt, while Hirth flew the Klemm towplane. A full set of documentation for this version can be found on this dedicated page on this site http://www.scalesoaring.co.uk/VINTAGE/Documentation/Minimoa_Mo_2a/Minimoa_Mo_2a.html http://www.scalesoaring.co.uk/VINTAGE/Documentation/Minimoa/Type2A_images/Slides/index.html Joe

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hey Peter, The LA-5/7 did not have a cooling fan.... I' thought it did and you can find lots of statements about the "fan" from people mentioning it but when you really look at it and dig you'll find it what looks like a fan is actually a sliding vent that opens when needed. This video is the best example I can find of the bit you're talking about. Look at 5:30 - 6:00 in this video. That Gene Barton Spinner fills the nose up pretty good. I don't think I'll need a fan/vent/dummy motor as much as I like the look of those things. The look will be correct and not leave a huge hole like you might think. Hope that helps. Joe

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hi AZThud, Great post and great info. I have a couple sets of lado's myself and love them. I have a 1st generation that I got from Doug which have served me well and a set from MagnumRC supplied by Chistopher. If I could get a parts list of the struts and lado's needed so I could just order them as a bolt in I'd go that way and speed things along. The Sieara's with Lado actuators is a very nice but pricy way to go. Some things I am very good a spec'ing out and others not so much. The gear just hit me at the wrong time and I was ready to fly other stuff so the LA-5 got put to the side. Right now I'm really in scale glider mode and have two vintage gliders and a 86 inch L-4 to do as a tug. I will finish the LA-5 for next season. But it will be after the new year. I'm out here lurking and really appreciate all your guys help. This spring I'll have a flurry of questions and post my progress. Joe

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hey Peter, No Troubles.... I didn't have any issues directly with ESM retracts. I had been reading and watching as they released various versions. Gen 1 took about 40 seconds to cycle, Gen 2 took a lot less time but then started to have reliability issues, Gen 2.5 installed little bumpers as a soft stop to avoid the reliability issues. Recently I've seen Gen 3 being talked about and suppliers are waiting for shipment. As normally happens with this kind of thing I read as I'm building and on the retracts I found myself waiting till I heard good reports. Along the same lines, if I have any issues with my XYZ ignition I'll order an Rcexle to replace it. I really really want to use the ESM retracts as they are a simple drop in and just got caught waiting then the season began. The warbird day was great.. I know you had real life crop up on you about then. There is always next year. It's an event you'd enjoy !! Joe

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hey Peter, Yup, It's sitting in the basement right where I left off last spring. I was going great guns on it till I hit the retract thing. I got caught waiting for ESM retracts to get figured out. It looks like they are about to release Version 3 of those retracts. Then I got busy with flying and real life. I know there are other retracts but I just didn't have the time to spend on it as the season began. Currently, I'm beginning a Minimoa 2 seater that will get done first and the LA-7 will be ready for next spring. Hope all is well. Joe

Hi Guys, Here's the video from the PMAC Warbird Festival. We had flyers from all over the state join us for a great day of flying and celebration of all things warbird. CorsairJock took advantage of our "Target Tank" and made multiple passes at it all day long. He started to really get the hang of it and had hits closer than 1ft by the end of the day !!! Thanks to everyone that attended and we hope to see you on the flight line soon !! RE: NGH 17cc gasoline engine
Hey Guys, Just a quick note to say I fired up my GT-17 this past weekend and am very happy! I'm a convert to gas from electric and I wanted to be sure I had everything set up correctly before going to the field for help tuning it in. I spun it with my starter till it kicked, choke off, and it fired right away as soon as I applied the starter. The GT-17 settled into an idle of 2,000rpm and would drop to about 1800 easily. I ran 20:1 through it at low rpms and each time I started it the engine fired very easily. I am using Polaris VES Gold Synthetic 2 Cycle Oil per the instructions of one of our club members. He is the Service Manager for a local Harley Dealership and avid RCer. He has done a bunch of testing to find an oil that burns clean and is high quality. As luck would have it I can this oil from a place within 5 minutes of my home so my choice was made easy. I used a APC 14x8 for the initial running and will go to a 14x9x3 once broken in. Next stop is the club field for help tuning and then into the air. Thanks for all your help here. I've been reading this thread and others in my conversion process and you guys have made things very easy. Joe

RE: PMAC Warbird Festival - White Lake, MI - June 16th, 2012
Hi CJ, Cool!!! You can have your way with my target tank!!! Of course, I stole that idea from you... lol If the tank breaks we laugh and cheer!! I'm breaking in my Stuka today, maybe it'll fly in time to make the event. First gasser so I'm learning what I didn't know I needed to know... So far so good. I tend not to fly too much at our WBD as I'm doing too much other stuff. If I can do a few laps and let another club member take off and land for me it allows me to get some stick time in. Those WWI bipes are very familuar. I didn't know Dave and Curt attended a Memorial Day Event. Cool. I have a Dr-1 for later this summer to fly with them. Man, I'm behind in my builds. See you Saturday. Joe

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hey Guys, I painted the yellow band on the tail and the stars off the bottom using warbird colors RML blue. I like the miss matching of the blues on the bottom and once I get the German crosses on there it will look really good. I'm thinking I'll do the yellow wing tips on the bottom as shown on the paper model. When I look at the Luftwaffe Archives photo of this plane it looks like you can see a surface change on the bottom of the wing tips and it will help with visualizing what the LA-5 is doing in the air for me. I'm thinking I'll get both flat and satin clear coats from Lowes to highlight the various paint areas. Russian paint will be flat, German paint will be satin or a mix of satin and flat, and the silver exhaust area will be left the ESM texture. I'll paint in the exhaust with an airbrush and then flat over the exhaust. Here's the progress this far. Joe

Thanks Casey, I worked a bit on it last night. I painted the cowl and applied some of the decals on the fuse... Wow!! That really transformed the way it looks. I have to do the stripe on the rear of the fuse and then the wing bottom details. Then weathering. Here's a teaser I took with my phone as I walked out this morning.... No lighting or posing. Hi AZThud, Great vid ! You nailed the landing !! Really nice. I've been working on mine. Last weekend I drew some panel lines, then taped them off, sprayed the AMT-12 camo. I removed the tape from the red stars and found a gray that didn't match the others to cover them up. I sprayed them over but did a intentionally bad job leaving some of the red to show through just slightly. I have some pics from before the stars were sprayed. Enjoy. Joe

Hey Guys, I received my Gene Barton Spinner yesterday and I'm really happy !! It's really close to the profile shown on this thread earlier and just over 4.5inches in diameter. It fills the cowl nicely leaving about 3/4 of and inch gap all the way around. I don't think I'd want to go any larger. Here are a couple of pics. Plus a sneak peek at my newly stickered P3 F-16... RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hey n8622t, I have been searching Google in Russian and found some more info. Basically, they show the same three planes. If you are looking to do a captured scheme the white "21" is cool also. I have been reading and asking about these planes all over the interwebs (lol) and from what I can see the version shown in this link is as correct as you'll find.Sometimes it's shown in a Brown Camo but it's the consensus that that was way off. You could do that conversion from the stock ESM colors very easily. Of course I choose mine due to the yellow it has for higher visibility. I'm going to do the bottom of the wing tips yellow also as shown in the paper kit. If you look at the one photo of my scheme it's hard to argue either way. Here's the link. Enjoy. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=http://www.aviation.ru/contrib/Andrey_Platonov/La-5/Testing/index.htm&ei=-L6FT_7AC4qg8QShnK2cCA&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=5&ved=0CFQQ7gEwBA&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%25D0%259B%25D0%25B0-5%25D0%25A4H%2B%25D1%2581%2B%25D1%2582%25D0%25BE%25D1%2587%25D0%25BA%25D0%25B8%2B%25D0%25B7%25D1%2580%25D0%25B5%25D0%25BD%25D0%25B8%25D1%258F%2B%25D0%25BB%25D1%258E%25D1%2584%25D1%2582%25D0%25B2%25D0%25B0%25D1%2584%25D1%2584%25D0%25B5%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26biw%3D2560%26bih%3D1224%26prmd%3Dimvns Joe

Hey Guys, I thought you might enjoy a link I found that talks about the German LA-5 including detailed pilots impressions. They use the only photo I know of at the top of their page of the LA-5 I'm modeling. You see this same photo over and over but most obscure the Swastika on the tail. http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ru&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.airpages.ru%2Fru%2Fla5fn_1.shtml Thanks AM6, I can use all the help I can get when it comes to color matching. I laid out the camo last night with tape just so I can visualize what things will look like. I wont get to paint it till later this week.... I'll post pics as I get moving. Joe

Hey Guys, I forgot I took these picks last night. You can see the difference in my two mixes. These photos were taken with the flash so they do look slightly different in the natural light. But you can see why I went with the lighter shade. The darker one is just too much for my taste. You can see how the Gleb RLM 04 looks also. Joe

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hey Guys, I just returned from Lowes after having my AMT-12 and Geb RLM 04 mixed. In this photo the AMT-12 looks darker than it actually is in real life. I mix two samples last night and settled on the one with a slight less than 1:1 mix I post before. It was just too dark for my tastes. This is dark but still gray. I like the look of this color better than the really dark gray a 1:1 mix gave me. As I said, there is so much argument about the shade that as long as it fits and makes sense no one will question it. I hope. In fact, due to scale effect the plastic model guys go to all this work and then they might add white to their mix to make things look faded or correct for a scale effect. I'm happy... so job done. Here are the pics (if I can get them right side up) of the labels with the mixing specs. I think you could copy these picks into your phone and have them scanned to recreate these same colors. Of Course you can just give them the spec on these labels and that would work also... Joe
