RE: GP .60 Reactor Bibe
Hey guys, have a YS91ac that is looking for a home. How would this engine power the Reactor Bipe? I have the normal Reactor with a 55ax and it has great power, I do not need rocketship action, but I do want a strong pullout. Thanks

RE: Just recieved my XXL
Hey Stealth Revo, I have the wing Tote Deluxe bag and it is great, I couldn't recommend it more. The truck fits in it perfectly and I can carry an extra set of 40 series, Tansmitter, gallon of fuel, charger, tools, spares.....all sorts of stuff. I would buy another on in a second if I had to. On another note, has anyone else broken the frame rails right behind the mid plate? I have busted two and the truck is mainly used on the track, not really bashing per say. There is one pretty good tripple and I sometimes overshoot it and flat track the landing, but not much any more, I pretty well have the timing down. Anyway I have to wonder if the extra length in the chassis is putting more strain on the frames, one way or another I have been having a blast with the truck and it has suprized a few people at the track.

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"
Well I took the plunge and modded my Losi 454 that came stock in my LST XXL. I di dnot take any pics but I basically did the same as the LRP .28 on this thread. All I can say is that it runs MUCH stronger then before, I flipped it over backwards on the front straight at the track tonight and it has NEVER done that. It accelerated quicker and more smoothly then it ever has, and it was easier to tune. I am no expert by any means, but man did it make a difference. I was having to "blip" the throttle on the track to keep the rear end under it, it was nearly too much. That 13 lbs XXL was running head to head with some buggies down the straight. One had an GRP tuned 21 and the other had a V-Spec in it. I was not exactly just pulling them (not enough room to strecth out) but off of the last corner into the first it was running with them. Pretty impressive for a big ole' lead sled of an LST XXL! [:D]

Yea, they have already sent me a new pullstart (original unwound in the case) and a new ring/pinion due to my pinion stripping as described earlier in the post. I would say thta they are very, very good.

RE: Just recieved my XXL
I had a little issue with my XXL today, namely that it stripped three teeth off of the pinion gear in the rear diff.... I called Horizon and they are sending me a new ring/pinion set but I need to call again tomorrow as it seems that the shim A6356 was stamped incorrectly. It is hard to describe but half of the shim is perfect and it looks like on the other half the die was moved over by 1mm so that the outer edge is 1mm out past the intended outer arc and it reduces to a point on the other half so that the shim does not meet on the other side, it reduces to a sharp point. Hard to describe, but it is f'ed up and did not keep the gear lash set to where it was supposed to be which led to the pinion not keeping in correct contact with the ring gear. The end result was the pinion stripping teeth..... Other then that it is doing very well for my first nitro vehicle. The engine is not quite set right yet but I am sneaking up on it. Only about a gallon through it so far.

Is it normal for these engines to be difficult until up to temp?
I just got a LST XXL with the 454 engine last thursday and as of right now I have about half of a gallon through it. It is pretty tuned in now once it warms up (maybe 10 tanks through it) and was broken in through heat cycling and then some easy driving with brief bursts of full throttle working up through several tanks. By the way I have flow planes/heli's for over 23 years so I do have a good deal of glow experience, first car engine though. Anyway, the engine runs very well and very strong once up to temps, but when first started is loads up a lot until it does get to temp. The low speed is set 1/8 richer then what the manual says to start with, but if I set it leaner it starts to "zing" at idle. The top end is about 1/8 leaned out and it makes great smoke when running and it runs right around 230-240 according to the on board telemetry. This is using Blue Thunder 20%. The outside temp was 75+ today. My question is will the engine level out with more time? It is stupid rich when I first start it up and I have to drive it around (have to ease into it to and work up with "stabs" to begin with or it dies) and then once the temp gets to around 165 it starts to level out. Hopefully it will get right with time, I just have never had this kind of a cold blooded personality with any of my air engines, they may need to warm up a bit before takeoff but they do not have to get up to anywhaere near 165 to start behaving right. Maybe I just have the tuning off, but once warmed up it runs from a dead idle with no hesitation at all, just rips off. Puts out a brief puff of smoke and then continues but not excessivly, any leaner and temps go up to 250-260. The pinch is still good and it has teriffic compression when hot. It is just killing me as I am chasing the needles, if I set it up when cold engine temps I have to adjust for hot and vice/versa. Thanks

RE: Extreme Flight RC Yak 54 - 74 inch!
Hey Hornet Dave, I am using 1 5955 and four 5945's along with a HS-81 on throttle on an Ultra RC Katana (75" span so about the same) and I too have found that I use very few MAh on a 10 minute flight. Maybe 150 MAh on the outside which really suprised me. In comparison I have an Align TRex 600n helicopter using 3 JR 8717's on CCPM, a Logictech 6100t gyro/servo and a HS-65 on throttle. On a 10 minute flight that thing will suck out 350-400 MAh! [X(] I can fly the Katana all day on it's 2200MAh lipo whereas on the 600n I am looking to recharge after 4 flights as it is running a 1800 MAh Lipo. Kind of funny how much less power the Katana uses...

RE: fliton inspire OR Reactor
I have had both and my nod goes to the reactor simpky due to the cost. They both fly very similarly, but the Reactor is substantially less expensive. I also like the way the wings attach on the Reactor better, the Inspire was a PIA. I think that the Reactor is more ruggedly built as well. I use an OS 55ax with the Tower 46 muffler and get 14,300-14,400 with an APC 12.25x3.75 prop and it will accelerate sraight up like a raped ape.

I have just ordered some gear from GraphTech as well after my stock gear broke the upper ply former in the fuse. They were starting to twist a bit anyway as the upper bolt that holds the gear in was begining to wobble out. I fly off of a fairly rough field, but the stock gear sucks anyway. It has been the only "bad" aspect of this plane that I have found, it is still a trmendous flyer and people will literally stop what they are doing to watch when I take this one up. It does just amazing rolling harriers, it makes me look better then I really think that I am! [:D]

Yes, without a doubt. It is far and away the best radio that I have ever used, as it should be. The ease of programming and ability to do just about any sort of mixing that you could ever imagine opens up doors that you would have ever thought to use. I have made funky mixes that would have been impossible with other radio's just to see how it would help in certain circumstances. And it is just so easy to do....

RE: OS 81FS-a
Who knows, maybe OS will finally get smart like Mercedes Benz did in the early 90's. Do you guys remember when the Lexus LS400 was first indroduced in 1990? At the time Mercedes was kind of resting on their reputation, their S-Class sedans were old, outdated, and expensive. All of the sudden here was Lexus, a Japanese manufacture who came out with a more technically advanced, reliable, and very good high performance sedan that quickly built a stellar reputation for service as well. In short Mercedes bagan to get their rear end handed to them in very rapidly and not too long after thet they introduced a new S-Class and dropped the base price at the same time. Saito and YS have been out for a while, but they keep coming out with new/inovative/high performance engines for a lot less then what OS is asking for their similar displacement engines. Sooner or later they will see that people are not buying the engines due to price, even if they are in fact good engines. They just do not offer anything to justify the cost to the average American Modeler. Sure, the prices may be competative in other counties, but I would have to assume that their bread is buttered in the States, they will either get with the program, or suffer the consequences. I like OS and I do truley hope that they reduce the MSRP and thuse the "street prices" will drop as well. Some bean counter in Japan HAS to see the writing on the wall, at least they do if they wish to keep their product a viable option....

RE: OS 81FS-a
With all that has been said, I would like to see some more numbers on the 81. When togatoga gets a bit of time on his I think that it would be interesting to compare numbers to even the Saito 100 as it DOES look to be pretty strong from the limited numbers posted. And I do believe in OS quality, other then the peeling lining issues they has, OS has a great reputation for quality and ease of use. Which is not to say that Saito does not....

RE: OS 81FS-a
I do not think that many would be bashing the 81 if the prices were in line, but as others have said people will decide on the success of the engine with their wallets more then they will by posting tach numbers. OS has a lot of money invested in the dedicated castings and machined parts for this engine, if people are not buying then I should imagine that it will not take long for the price to drop. And who is to argue with their pricing strategy? The OS 81 currently comes in at $350 and the Saito 82 at around $255 (both before discounts etc). Say in early Spring (when flying season starts rolling again) OS decides to drop the price of the 81 to $300, a $50 reduction. Now all of the sudden some people will be saying "see now, OS realized that they were asking too much and lowered the price, now that's more like it" and they will buy the 81 as $50 is a good deal off of $350. But OS would still be getting $45 more then the 82, and $20 more then the Saito 100! Who knows, maybe they are taking it in the rear for a little while so they can do a price reduction and still get more money for their engines then the competition. [:)] One way or another something has to give, they must have noticed that these things are not exactly "flying" off of the shelves. The numbers that togatoga got look pretty good though, and people will pay a bit more for a quality item and I do believe that by and large OS does make very good and long lasting engines. They have had a few bumps, but not many.

RE: Rude or stupid hobby store workers
I agree with chashint about A-1 hobbies in mesquite, I walked in looking for an airplane and ready to buy, I was the only person in there and the guy did not even put his paper down to acknowlege that I was there. Never said a word and I walked out. I was at one of our other local hobby shops the other day and saw a few guys that I know from our field. One guy was looking for a charger with a salesman and asked the other guy for his opinions on chargers when he walked up. He gave his opinion, which was opposite of what the salesman was saying (although he did not know this as he had just walked up) and a few minuites later the salesman walked up to the guy who had given his opinion and told him that if he ever interfered in one of his sales again then he would kick him out of the store! He did not even know that he was recommending another product! So the guy puts down everything that he was going to buy (including a high dollar radio) and starts to walk out saying that he would never be back. On his way out the salesman said if the guy ever came back in he would call the police and have him arrested for trespassing! Now how is that for your local hobby store service and friendliness.... I hope that the rude salesman looses his jobas for the most part the guys at this hobby shop are pretty good people, but that kind of attitude is more then uncalled for. The guy who walked up was simply asked for his opinion and gave it, he had no idea that he was "interfering with a sale", and the charger that he was recommending cost twice as much as what the salesman had suggested.

RE: Just wondering what the best prop would be for my OS 55AX on my mojo 40 ?
I have used the APC 12.25x3.75, 13x4 and 13x4w on both a Funtana X50 and a Reactor. Out of all of the above the 12.25x3.75 has been the best prop to use for me. I am running 25% Omega with a tower hobbies 46 muffler turning 14,200-14,400 and the performance is spectacular to say the least. I do not know what the static trust is, but it will yank a 5.7 lbs (dry) airplane straight up from takeoff at a ballistic rate. I have a Ultra RC Katana with an OS 1.60 FX, the plane weighs 10lbs dry and the 1.60 with an APC 18x6 is making 19-20 lbs thrust. The Reactor at 5.7 lbs dry with the 55ax, 12.25x3.75, Tower 46 muffler, and Morgan Omega 25% will outrun the Katana going straight up, I mean it has stupid ballistic performance. Hovers at half throttle or less an will punch OUT. Might want to try one.... [8D]

RE: O.S 1.60FX Owners. Post your tach readings
I went with the 20x6 after someone else on here had some luck with it. The main reason is to get a larger cone of air to pass over the control surfaces, especially the ailerons as I have the engine in an Ultra-RC Katana and due to the design of the trailing edge strakes or extensions at the root of the wing the ailerons do not go as far inboard as some other 3D designs. The result of this is that there is not enough airflow over the ailerons with the 18" prop, I am holding nearly full right aileron to hover and keep it from torquing over. If it starts to get a little out of shape rolling to the left I do not have enough authority to stop the roll before it completes at least 180 degrees of revolution to the left. The 20" prop allows me to use a lot less aileron to keep it straight while hovering. If I have to I will go back to the 18" prop and maybe mix in some ailevons on the tail as there is of course a seperate servo on each half. I am using a 14mz and I know that it is capable of setting up a condition to do just such. The engine does not sound like it is laboring and it is not getting hot, maybe I will take some tach readings to see where it is sitting with the 20" prop. The main thing that gets me is that I have both the high and low speed needle set to near stock/pumpless settings. It just seems that it begins to starve for fuel as it cannot lift the fuel from the mid mount position that the tank is in. I will try to mess with it this weekend if the 20-30 mph winds that we are haveing here in Dallas ever subside. It is nearly 80 degree's here right now in January, you could not ask for a better temp to go flying in, but the winds are howling... [:'(] [:(]

RE: O.S 1.60FX Owners. Post your tach readings
Ok guys, I need a little help. I have my 1.60 tuned in pretty well running Morgan Omega 10%, slimline pitts, VP-30, and a Zinger Pro 20-6 prop. I need to tach it, but it pulls my 10lbs Ultra-RC Katana like a freight train until I put the nose upand hover for 30+ seconds. At that time when I go to full throttle it just does not spool up, sometimes it will even sag a bit. It is not overheating, I can land right after this happens and hold my finger to the head for 5+ seconds. It is leaving a good smoke trail, like I said I need to tach it but I tune for max RPM's and back off a bit. I need to count the threads on the pump, but I HAVE NOT had to lean the high and low end like some others have, do I need to increase the pump pressure? The tank is level with the carb but back in the fuse a bit, right in front of the wing tube. The pump is set up just as the instructions say to, the vent line vents out of the bottom of the cowl, it does not go back to the tank. From idle to high end and anywhere in between is clean when level, it is just when the nose has been verticle for a time that it acts up. It really gets your attention when you are hovering less then five feet above the ground and you go to throttle up and the engine sags! [sm=what_smile.gif]

RE: Testing SFG's on my 35% Extra
I made mine out of balsa, mainly 3/8x1/2 sticks but if I were to do it again I think that I would use 1/4x3/8 or 1/4x1/2 as the 3/8 thickness seems to be a bit of overkill. They are STIFF right now, but only 2 oz each. The biggest difference I notice is it tames wing rock in harrier flight, and the alpha in knife edge flight is cut roughly in half if not more. Long slow rolls do not take on as much of a nose high attitude when in the knife edge part of the roll. They also look cool. [:D]

RE: KATANA XL - new release
All of the holes were drilled on mine as well, maybe not drilled straight, but they were drilled! [:)] On a side note, the SFG's seem to work very well, it still snaps very crisp and cleanly, but the knife edge flight and harrier are much better. I would say the alpha in knife edge flight has been cut in half and long slow rolls are much more axial when it gets on its side. I am very pleased overall. The most astonishing facet of flight is how slow it will fly, I harriered it in directly at me yesterday afternoon and I thought that it would never get back, it was sooo slow. I need to experament with a larger diameter prop on my OS 1.60fx. I am running an APC 18x6w right now and I have to hold a lot of right aileron to hover due to the torque, I moght see if the OS will swing a 19" or 20" prop to get a bit more airflow over the surfaces. The airplane flies great though.

If I had the spare money I would LOVE to be able to build a unique and different airplane. I agree with you tailspin, when it is night (I HATE the time change!) and cold outside I have to have something to do, I just am not good at sitting still. Personally I think a Dornier Do 335 would be cool with a couple of RCV 90sp's to keep the cowling tight. Anyway, I just do not have the money laying around right now to do so. I have actually built several self designed scratch aircaft and once we have recovered from some of the medical bills I would like to again (even with insurence having a kid is $$$!) but for now it is ARF's. Heck even if I do buy the Hangar 9 60 sized P-47 I would have to add flaps and gear doors as I could not just leave it as is.

RE: KATANA XL - new release
Well, I decided to do something a little bit different on my Katana, I made a set of SFG's (side force genrators) for it. I had a Funtana X50 which was a good flying airplane after I modified the LE until it had an unfortunate encounter with a Twist right wing to right wing head on. Anyway I really liked the way the X50 flew with the SFG's that came with it, they really helped with knife edge flight and they helped to stabilise the harrier A LOT. The way my Katana is currently set up is with an OS 1.60fx, P-30, and Slimline pitts. It weighs 10lbs on the nose without the SFG's (they weigh 4.4 onces for the pair) and fly's inverted with just a breath of down elevator. To be honest I have only flown it once, but I wrung it out pretty well. Of course it flew well, but it does tuck a bit to the belly in knife edge without any roll coupling, and I was a bit suprised at the amount of wing rock at high alpha even though another guy at my field has a Katana with a Brison 2.4 and he does not think that mine rocks like his does from observing the flight. His does weight 12lbs though. I have a GP Reactor that has a LOT less wing rocking. So seeing as how I personally realy liked the way my Funtana flew with the SFG's I decided to make a pair for the Katana. On my Funtana I could do the most beautiful slow rolls that stretched from horizon to horizon, the SFG's kept the alpha down on KE flight making the transition from upright or inverted to KE very, very easy. And like I said earlier the upright harrier on the Funtana was so much better and rock free with the SFG's installed. They also looked cool! [:D] I just made a template of the wingtip on each side and went from there on paper. There is really no scientific engineering behind their design, I just used the TLAR method (that looks about right) to draw up the plans. They are loosely based off of the ones that were on the funtana. The construction is mainly 3/8" sq and 3/8"x1/2" balsa sticks and the tip plates are cut out from 1/4" ply with blind nut counter sunk in. I simply pulled the covering off of the tips and epoxyed the ply tips on then covered. I have yet to fly it with the SFG's as it seems that everything that could conspire to keep me from flying yesturday did, and today was raining and in the 30's, but I will post on my results after I try them. Pics below.

I have used them and will continue to do so, but only on certain applications and with a longer screw to hold the servo arm on (one that goes deeper into the output shaft). I have and will use them on sport style aircraft up to 90-120 size, but not on something with a high control surface loading such as 3D. Also I will not use them on any heli. But other then those restrictions I have used them and have had no problems or issues.
