RE: Lightning Build
I have started the Lightning build based on the plans posted on the plans posted on the [link=http://www.eurekaaircraft.com/plan_kits/lightning.htm]Eureka Aircraft site[/link]. Somehow, I can't seem to find the pattern for fuselage rib F1 (firewall). The plans include sheet 6A, but there is no 6B... Can someone tell me where this pattern is located? I also noticed that the Eureka site no longer has the Lightning plans available for download. I'm glad I downloaded them when I did! thanks, John

RE: What happens if arf and kit building prices meet?
I love to build. I noticed that ARFs are now much cheaper to buy than the materials I use to build. Does it matter to me? Not much. I have considered buying a few balsa ARFs just to try out an airframe, but I will still build and fly from plans and kits. To me, building is as much a part of the hobby as flying. There is no better feeling than launching and landing something I build myself!

RE: Lightning Build
Jeff, Do you pre-spray the surfaces with hair spray as was discussed for attaching wing skins to the core? I suspect that this might reduce the penetration of the resin into the wood and reduce wieght a little. However, this might reduce strength where you need it... John Asa

RE: Lightning Build
I'm not at that point, (just setting up the fuse jig) - but would really like to read about this as well. I expect weight would be a huge concern. Along with this topic, can someone discuss their approach for hinging control surfaces? For a typical monokote-style build, you could use monokote in seal the hinge. How do you do so when covering with fiberglass? Again, thanks for sharing your experience in this space! John Asa "Ace" Price

Jeff (or anyone else on this thread) - can you point me towards more detail on the wing adjusters. I understand they are Gator adjusters, I am just having a little trouble visualizing the configuration. Is there a thread on the topic? thanks JP

RE: Lightning Build
I got my foam cores from Eureka... am wondering. The plans call for a grid of squares to be removed from the wing core. Did you do this manually? Did you use hot wire or knife?

RE: Lightning Build
Thanks for the list! I've already ordered, but will check against your list to see if there is anything significant missing.

RE: Lightning Build
Great Thread! This will be my first pattern build. I ordered the foam cores from Eureka Aircraft (looking forward to seeing them, Don!). This is a "learning" project for me, so I'll be building this one on-the-cheap with HobbyKing motors, ESC, servos, etc... I've had great success with these on other e-conversions. I haven't come across a "materials list" for this. Can anyone suggest the amount and different types of wood required to complete? Thanks John

RE: Where do you like to fly?
I prefer to fly at the club site. I live in a large city. Although there is a large soccer complex where I have permission to fly, there are other people around who don't know the importance of staying clear of RC airplanes. When I flew smaller foamies, I felt more comfortable flying in "public" sites because the relative risk to others was smaller. But there was still risk. I prefer to fly at the club field: ... because I usually have a spotter in the event that a low-flying aircraft happens to come into my "box" ... others are around because there is a risk of injury with a 14-inch prop and it would be nice to know I could get help if I needed it. ... I know what's around it and that I always know it is OK to fly there. ... there are guys there who are better pilots/builders than me. I learn something new every time I go out there. (this takes humility and respect for others.) ... I like the field and the guys who are there.

RE: So what would you do in this situation?????
Our club has barriers (made of PVC and plastic mesh) behind which the pilots stand when they fly. Behind these barriers are setup tables, where modelers can work on their aircraft, do pre-flight, etc... Generally pilots may stage their aircraft around the setup tables. Aircraft might also be staged in the spectator area (no engines are run in this area)... Aircraft are never sitting on or by the runway unless they are going up or coming down. However, if my craft were on the side of the runway, and a less experienced pilot accidentally hit it with his aircraft. I'm mature enough to point out what he did, and then let it go at that. My number one priority is to enjoy and promote this hobby. I don't go around with a chip on my shoulder when I go flying, because I fly for enjoyment. Getting angry and resentful is not enjoyable to me. Actually, I find building and fixing RC airplanes to be quite enjoyable, so I would look at it like this: The guy gave me a good reason to spend some time in the shop. Perhaps by being graceful, instead of being a jerk, I might make a friend, and find an opportunity to help the guy out on his landing and ground handling.

I store my LiPos in our fireplace. (unless we are using it, which is quite rare)

RE: FAAs Regs = End of Speed planes?
you guys seriously need to turn off "REACTION MODE" and activate "RATIONAL THINKING MODE" The conversation went from "they are considering some limits" to "they are going to lock us in prisons because they are Nazis" This is OUR government, and we have representatives. We also have AMA lobbying on our behalf. Bear in mind that most people's concept of RC airplanes are the little things that they go their kids for Christmas. This is an opportunity to educate our legislature. This is also a time for ALL OF US to demonstrate how safe we can be with our RC aircraft. Let's be careful out there and prove to our government and the FAA that we can be responsible and safe.
