RE: Sky Bolt engine choice, input requested...
Wow! What a blast from the past! I found a good used OS 91 four stroke to go on my Sig Sky Bolt & it's wonderful. I have taken the last 18 months off from flying RC because I have been working to finish my full size, but I have been itching to get back into RC again. Maybe next spring. Later! John

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Bent, Nice mods. What kind of light did you use? Is it functional? Based on your ideas, I guess I have more work to do. I really like your new struts. I still intend to add a smoke system & booms. I got the scale Dave Clarke headset for my GI Joe, and added the Gem Tech strobe in the top of the canopy. It is a great flying plane. I like the fact that this model looks good in the air, and it doesn't have to be going like stink to look scale. It's a very relaxing plane to fly... Thanks for sharing! John

RE: coro round fuse build video
My flying buddy & me have been building & flying 1/12 scale combat planes for a while as sport planes, no combat, well except for the ground sometimes. We fly off of sod fields, so we have to go large or small enough for hand launch. I had a Hergett P-51 & my buddy had a Corsair that a guy from Tennesee built for us, but I can't remember his name, now. I had a foam Corsair that didn't last long, as well. Anyway, I want to build the Lightning at about 60"ws with 2 .25's. I may cut some corners and not build the scale rounded fuses to simplify things. I think the wing will be the hard part. Do the flutes run front to back on wings like that? I think the cockpit could be blue foam and low temp monocote or lost panty hose & painted... Hmm.. this may not be too bad... John

RE: ultra sport 60 twin???
db, On a twin, 2 engines that equal half of the recommended displacement will give more thrust/speed than the original number...i.e. 2 .25's will faster than a .46/50. So 2 .32's will be more than enough for .60 size engine. My buddy used 2 .32's on a plane that recommended 2 .25's & it's way too fast. 2 .40's, not to mention, 2 .46's or even .50's as suggested above, will be way to much for you airframe. And with the larger engines, flight times will be severely limited by tank size. .32's will be more than enough. Also keep your aileron throws at about half of what you would use in a single engine aircraft. The prop wash blowing directly across those control surfaces will make for really fast roll rates. Use the larger engines if you want an uncontrollable bullet, but use a couple of .25's to enjoy the airplane... Good Luck. John

RE: coro round fuse build video
I have a little built up balsa B-25 with 2 .010's, that I haven't flown yet, so I think I would lean toward a P-38. I did see your video, and it looked great. I think it would be hard to get the required air speed for a spad that size with a hand launch. That's why I was thinking of a dolly. I have thought about a non scale twin, but with the durability of coro, I think I'll just make a stab at a 38... I have always liked coro planes, but you round fuse technique rules. I assume your a draftman. I a mechanical designer, so I love to tinker, too! Keep in touch... John

RE: coro round fuse build video
draftman1, I have a piece of gray coroplast left over from some PVC-51's I built a few years ago. I really enjoyed the simplicity of the builds & their durability. Your round fuse technique simply completes the equation. I have really gotten bit with twins, so I would like to build one with 2 .25's. I can see building a take off dolly, rather than adding landing gear. I'll get on your website site & study up on your info. Good stuff & thanks for sharing. John

draftman, What tool do you use to strip off the inside flutes? I toyed with this several years ago, but I was trying to slit the flutes, but not remove the flat part. Nice work. Do you have patterns for the different aircraft available? Thanks for sharing! John

RE: beginner twin kit or ARF
This is what I did as an experiment for bashing my Ultra Stick .120 into a twin. I think you can get the Dazzler for about a $100. It's not so scale that I really have fun with it. I have a second de-commissioned Dazzler hanging on the wall & and my buddy is giving me his Dazzler, for future twin projects. It's one of my favorites. Good Luck! RE: Hangar 9 Pawnee 80
I have an FS-70 in mine with the battery next to the 12" GI Joe in the cockpit. It fly's great. I do feel the .82 would be way overkill. The .70 probably has a little more power than scale. Save the .82 for something else... YMMV John

RE: jumbojet
Whoa! That looks nice! What kind of foam is that? I have been working with the blue house building styro to make plugs for wheel pants for my full size. It doesn't sand smooth, at all, compared to what you've got. I have rough sanded the two mains, but I still have to cut, shape & sand the nose wheel plug. Let me know. I may redo the mains if your foam works that much better. Thanks! John

Gas Heli's & Scale Bodies Questions
Hello Gang! My buddy is interested in a gas heli, and he wants a scale body for it, but would prefer a 500E. I have googled for a while & found one listed on Century's website, but there is no info for it. Can you guys help me out? Thanks! John

RE: Engine noise level questions
So I guess I'll need to tach the props & do some quick calculations for tip speed. It was a large gasser with supersonic tips that really started the sound testing. I could hear it from several miles away, but couldn't figure out what it was. I had people miles on the other side asking me what it was, as well. The guy should have known better. He flew that plane all day at our site directly across for from a highly populated country club. I have one twin project that I wanted to put 2 FS-70's on, but I picked up some .61 2 cycles for cheap. I guess I could build 2 test stands & check them before I go to the trouble to mount them... I just looked up our sound test spec: Meter set to A weighted, downwind from aircraft & in line with the prop, full throttle. 94 db max at 10 feet on grass. Thanks for the input guys! John

Engine noise level questions
I didn't know if this should go here, or in the AMA area, but I'll try it here first. I have several projects underway where I have not purchased engines for them, yet. Our club has officially implemented the standard AMA noise level restrictions on our fields. They have purchased a few sound meters, but it's a pain to schedule with the meter keepers to check noise levels on our aircraft. Does anyone have enough experience to give me at least a rough idea of what engines will pass the 94db at the proper distance? Like, for example, anything above a .91 2 cycle is too loud with a stock muffler? Or 4 strokes & gassers? I assume that the 4 strokes can go a lot larger for a given db over a 2 cycle. Any input will appreciated. John

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Stoat, After thinking about it... If you have trimmed to level flight with a forward CG, the up trim will cause it to climb as it gains speed in the dive. If you have trimmed for aft Cg then it will pitch down in the dive, correct? Hmmm... Old dog, new trick... I like it! Thanks! John

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Stoat, Don't you have the dive test parameters reversed? It should steepen if it's nose heavy & flatten out if it's tail heavy, right? I built my Pawnee last summer. I have an FS-70 OS in mine, and balanced it according to the book. I placed my 4 cell AA Nicad pack next to the GI Joe in the cockpit. It flies great with that CG & engine. One of my favorites out of my current squadron of 13. I intend to at least add spray booms, and hopefully smoke. I have tried to spend less on my RC stuff while I'm trying to finish my full size plane, so the smoke system will wait a while. Good Luck! John

RE: Top Flite Giant Mustang with a G-45, which exhaust!
Denny, I built the TF GS P-51 with a G45 & the Bennett Box muffler, as shown in your pics. I wanted to upgrade to the wrap around Pitts style muffler from Chief Aircraft, but it's configured such that there was a 1/4" interference with the firewall if the engine is mounted according to the plans, and I didn't feel comfortable hacking on the fire- wall of a plane that's already been flown. I don't remember why I chose the Chief over the J-Tec, so I need to check on their's. Just wanted to give you a heads up... John

RE: 1/2A ducted FAN FLOP
My 1/2A Warthog flies great with the 2 Kamdax DF units. I used the integral tanks. 41" WS. I had to add 9 oz's of lead to the nose to get the CG correct. I really didn't think it would go 20 feet! My partner has a great arm for hand launches. It sinks quite a bit, but I keep adding more elevator & away she goes. It takes a little time for the fans to unload. Mine flies great, and everyone stops to take a look when I fire up the second engine... 1/2A is too much fun... Oh yea... we need pics please... I'll try to get a link in here of my Warthog thread... RE: Maiden on the GP P-38 Yesterday.
Barnes, That's interesting. I bashed a Dazzler Arf into a twin with two OS .25's, and it's a bullet. It seems that with a much sleaker airframe, the P-38 ought to go like stink... Johnny C
