RE: New Zenoah GT-80 misfire
Definitely ditch the 42% ignition cutoff. If yours works at all you have been very fortunate.

RE: JETPOWER 2012 products WOW !
ORIGINAL: Ali A step too far in cost maybe? All for a 5 min flight[:@] I for one am going to be really interested to see how aerodynamically efficient these huge airframes are when off the power. I know with my smaller EDF's I spend allot of time off power and utilising the energy in the airframe. Having a bit of stick time on these big jets, I just get the idea they wont behave the same off the power! I am sure I will be proved wrong

ORIGINAL: asimace I'm sure it will work and work very well too, the DS-215 is a true masterpiece and I was just staring at it for at least 5 minutes in awe... But I was just considering my experience that does not go beyond 6S1P 5000 mAh in a Habu 32 and was thinking of the 400 Amp OPTO regulator (the cables are thicker than those of my car!) and trying to imagine how big and heavy could the 14S 16000 mAh battery pack be..! And then again (personal opinion) a jet must have that burnt kero aroma around! In any case I love the big edfs I see in the meetings! Mauri
Ali, Mauri, Thanks for the reply. I get the 2nd one off of the production line. I already have the batteries so it's just a matter of selecting an airframe. I have an 1/5.5th scale F-16 that Eddie Lozano designed but I'm also considering a Tomahawk L-39 or a CARF/Skygate L-39. I guess we will see how it turns out. Kirk

Price predicted to be around the 3000 euro mark for fan, motor and controller [&:] I am liking my larger EDF's, but I feel this may just be a step too far! Like all Schubi products, it is a piece of art almost too nice to put in a plane!

ORIGINAL: asimace Yeah, me too I think it is maybe too much, but it might be the solution for that harrier in the background! Mauri
I'm curious as to why you guys think the DS-215 is a "step too far"? With the amount of thrust it puts out, wouldn't it be an alternative source of power for large airframes like the Tomahawk L-39, CARF/Skygate L-39 and the 1/5.5 and 1/4 scale F-16s? Kirk
ORIGINAL: Airforce7 Kirk, Great pictures. How many flights do you have on your Hunter now? I will keep an eye out for it at BITW next month. GJC is offering some new paint schemes I hope they will show off.
Thanks. I have 18 flights on the Hunter. I'll be in tent L11, feel free to stop by. After BITW, I'll be repainting mine in the Swiss winter scheme. I've been holding off adding more detail until then. Kirk
ORIGINAL: smchale Started adding some color to mine yesterday and today. I'm embarassed to admit to just how much masking there was for such a simple scheme.
ORIGINAL: Eddie P Nice work Kirk!! Jet looks great in the air. How did you pack her up for the transit to and from? Did you drive a trailer or pack and fly?
Thanks Eddie. I disassembled the Hunter and put it in its original shipping box and shipped it through Forward Air and I flew to Columbus. It arrived in Columbus with no damage and my fingers are crossed for the same when it gets back here at the end of the week. I don't have a trailer so for BITW I will most likely pack it back in the original shipping box and carry it in the back of my SUV along with the Skymaster L-39. Kirk

RE: Thomahawk or CARF/Skygate L-39??
ORIGINAL: schroedm The C-ARF model is certainly a lot more scale than the THawk L-39. Stefan designed it primarily as a WJM model so went all out on the detail. It's as scale as you can buy. The THawk is bigger and maybe has more 'impact' on the ground due to its size but it is not as scale. There is surface detail but it's not true scale. the ailerons are skin hinged too for convenience rather than scale. Both are great versions of the model but the C-ARF/Skygate version is definitely the one to go for if you want scaleness. I think the prices of both are similar but the CARF/SG version comes from the factory as standard at an advanced build stage for which you have to pay handsomely if you choose the Stage 3 build option from Tomahawk. The TH model is huge so harder to transport unless you have a trailer, although you still may struggle if you want to transport it on its wheels as the fin is not removable. Sat on its wheels the top of fin must be nearly 4ft from the ground. If it were me (and I think it will be soon [8D]) I'd go for the CARF/SG version. Rgds, Mark
Mark, thanks for the info. I am leaning towards the CARF/SG L-39. I was told one of the CAF reps in Germany is working with CARF to have formers made so the DS-215 drops in without mods. I also like the way the CARF/SG breaks down for transporting. And since I have a scale background, the scale fidelity of the CARF/SG is more appealing. Kirk

RE: Thomahawk or CARF/Skygate L-39??
ORIGINAL: JackD. Wow kirk... that thing is huge. Is there a point where A123's start to make sense over lipos? I mean, we dont use them in smaller planes due to size and weight, but would you consider them to power something this big? Just curious... PS: are you still building the F86, or did you give up on converting that to e power?
Hi Jack. Good point on the A123's. I hadn't thought about using them but with a large airframe it may make sense to consider them. I haven't given up on the F-86. Just put it away during the flying season. I plan to get it back out after BITW although I am considering putting it up for sale to help fund this project. Kirk

Thanks Dave. How'd you guess I'll be building a big EDF I'll be using the new Schubeler DS-215 with 54 pounds of thrust. In the photo below, the fan that's second from the left is the 29 pound thrust DS-94 that's in my Hunter. The DS-215 makes it look small. Kirk

Thanks Z, Frank, and Ron. Frank, Daniel and Christian attended E-Jets. They are really fun to hang out with. Wait until you see the new DS-215 at Jet Power. In the photo below the DS-94 is the second fan from the left. The DS-215 makes the DS-94 look like a 90mm fan. I'll be putting a DS-215 in either the Thomahawk or CARF/Skygate L-39. Kirk

Thomahawk or CARF/Skygate L-39??
I have been contemplating the next project and its come down to a Thomahawk or CARF/Skygate L-39. For those that have built one of these orboth of these, what is your impression of the quality of the kit, flight characteristics, and customer service? Which kit has more detail molded in? Which kit weighs less? If you had to do it over again, would you go with the same kit you selected or would you build the other one? Thanks, Kirk

RE: Hawker Hunter 1/6th scale ARF from Flying Legends
ORIGINAL: Tinpusher Hi, made the maiden flight of my EDF powered Hunter today. Maybe the first one in continental Europe? I used almost the same setup as Kirk did (thanks again for paving the way), but with 2s2p 5000 Gensace packs and the MGM Compro ESC. AUW 35 lbs without cockpit and tanks. She went airborne after about 70m on the grass runway at my local field in some gusty conditions. I think I will add a gyro for ailerons as well. Upon landing, the field turned out to be too short by about 10 feet which ended in a damaged nose gear strut. Sorry, no video because I had planned only for some ground runs but I couldn't resist to take her to the skies. After all, my kit had only some minor flaws and I am looking forward to get the nose oleo fixed, install a decent cockpit (hoping Phil has something available at the upcoming Jet Power fair) and get more flights. Frank
Frank, congrats on the maiden. How do you like the DS-94? I love the way mine flies. I think yours and mine are the only two with e-power so far. Kirk

RE: Hawker Hunter 1/6th scale ARF from Flying Legends
I flew my Hunter at E-Jets International this weekend and received the "Best of Show" award. I was told the Hunter received the award because it was unique and innovative, sounded more realistic than any other plane there, and was flown and presented in a realistic manner. I'll post some photos later in the week when I get back home. Kirk

RE: A123 Question
Difinitely balance chaarge your A123s. Every time. There is no reason not to as it only adds a few minutes to the routine unless they are severely out of balance in which case you have a problem anyway. The folks that advise not to balance charge are likely to be the next ones on here to bemoan the loss of a plane for unexlained reasons. Don't be that guy.
