RE: RC Surfer
Tripper - Thanks for the link to the forum on 2.4GHz RF. Learned a bunch to help get better reception. Kite- I want to see what you do on your twinfin tilt ? On a fixed fin board the more you lean the twinfins over the more the board lifts in the tail, but rocks back and forth easier. More vertical is more drive but harder to roll the board. A lot like " V " in the bottom. More " V" = easier turn , less drive. Only the lift is reversed. In the bottom more "V" = less lift . Keeping the fins Prependicular to the "V" could be the best. Bear- Nice little cover piece !!! Hopefully you with a good Stuffing tube as talked about you won't get water in that far !! Aloha, Karl

RE: RC Surfer
2.4 GHz - Some info for the 2.4ghz users. I was working with a friend yesterday who is a computer engineer and knows a bit about radiowaves. He told me that the 2.4GHz is an unrestricted band width and is full of users from cell phones to garage door openers for starts. Then it is a sub- frequency of the microwave frequency ( 2.4 and microwaves are on even divisions 1/2, 1/4 etc.) Microwave ovens use radio frequencys to heat up the water molecules in food to make it get hot or cook. So 2.4GHz is more easily obsorbed in water than other frequencies. Lastly a lot of coding is used to keep out interferience now a days like Spectrum radios. So when the board comes up from a wipeout it takes time to reconnect to the code of the Tx not just find a transmition. Hope I remembered all this right !!! Thanks YPC I want to change my middle name to Vincent so I can be Kv H ,,,Nah I like KWH ( kila watt hour) Better stay with my Dads humor. Aloha, Karl

Yo - Thanks for clueing me up on what kv is not. My brain has to know what everthing means. The guy on a boardsharks will usually go for a while before falling apart. I've had 5 of um. The best thing is to add some reenforcing around his ancles with fiberglass cloth and epoxy glue. I was attracted to the realism of that figure from the get go and have made him work. It actually inhances the turns not just the look. I have a new radio that I made that is a 3 axis single stick and a trigger. Maui John can drive my guy better than I can right now. I'm working on making a figure, but it is a tough job. Aloha, Karl

Bearcave- Definitely use Grease!! You can cut the bushings in half 1/2" is plenty long on each end but if it is a long shaft I would support in the middle. A syringe works good to get the grease in the tube. Dom - I make custom Rc Boards !!! That is what you are seeing on the videos. I have used the Boardshark guys on them cause it was easier than making my own dude. So you don't know what KV stands for either ? We need Tripper to come thru and get us edumakated. Aloha, KH

RE: RC Surfer
D and Y winding Hey guys thanks for taking up the quest for truth !!! I was asking about the 28mm x 60mm motor that was not there recommendation. Nice little motor, puts out a 1300 watt burst. pretty insane !!! Tripper- if you get the textbook info on the motor classifications I would stoked to read it !!! Here is a forum all about it but has conflicts and grey areas. http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/showthread.php?1082-Delta-or-Wye&s=82107b3846f45b155b073760b13befb0 YPC- You should know this one why is it kv / rpm? like it should be V / rpm So if I have a 1000 kv motor on 12 volts I am expecting to get up to 12,000 rpm right ? If it is kv ( kila volts,or 100 volts ) kv / rpm it should be in my brain 120 rpm. .12 kv is 12 volts ? .12 x 1000 = 120 ( it takes a lot to admit I don't know this so don't laugh ) Maybe that is why I am a board shaper ??? RE: RC Surfer
Y or D controversy Sorry to bore all those who don't care, but I have to update you on the latest. Emailing Leopard motors about the Y or D winding motor It is a secret what a Y and D winding does, but I was asked what I was using it for and they would tell me the what winding they recommend. I described the RC Surfer and this is the reply. "Sorry for my delay. According to your informations, we'd like to recommend our 28x60mm motor with Y winding, if you want faster speed, you could choose 2Y. Hope this is helpful for you." OK, so they say the Y is better for a RC Surfer as I hypothesized. Now why was 2Y faster ? After trying to get them to tell me the rario of the number and the responce in kv I got this Email. Hi Karl, Glad to see this is helpful for you! You may mis-understand something like the ratio. There is no relation between no. and KV, I mean no ratio between each other. Customers care about most is the KV. Please understand I am unable to tell details, as this is technical secret. Thank you! Our Sport is classified Top Secret !!! Get out the dartboard or call the CIA Aloha, Karl

RE: RC Surfer
Cananzi- Good to hear from Ya !!! One factor in transmitters is the transmition Wattage. Looking at an Aircraft radio versus a surface the output wattage is way less on surface,( I am concluding this from battery consumption, So maybe there is a diffrence between models and brands too. Kite - Did you think about covering up the holes and seeing if it overheats ?? they say the holes are for cooling, Bummer Ya, Leopards are asking to suck water now. Aloha, Karl

Lots of reading to keep up !! Bear- Thanks for the confirmations !! I am working on a 4 ch radio that is Rc Surfer friendly. Cheyne Horan is a regular foot. Good to have you on the forum bra !! Can relate to wanting to rip but the body getting to old. I am still able bodied but am definatly past my prime. With RC surfing versus me surfing I call it the Arobic / Robotic Ratio. The older I get the more it swings to Robotic. A perfect day holds a session for both. Kite- Awesome sculpting and shots !!! Aloha, KH

RE: RC Surfer
YPC- Hey looking clean !! Seeing a 36mm motor in your models is different. In the future if the materials are available you might try a stuffing tube like I make up. It is the same internal 4mm stainless shaft but I run on 3/8" long bronze bushings one on each end and one in the middle. I think the less contact area makes for less drag. and you can get a large quanity of grease inside to keep out water. I use a thin wall 1/4" OD stainless outer tube. I have a lathe so it make reaming the bushings easier. but it could be done with a drill and a 4mm ream. they press fit in the outer tube. I generally only have to regrease after about 30 runs. Note: pick- up tubes as previously talked about. the exaust are repaired and not cleaned up to well. Aloha, Karl

RE: RC Surfer
Park- Your Y or D conclusion I think is wrong. The best my investigation has got me is that a Y motor is like a 3 cylinder engine. Each cylinder fires independently. It has a higher resistance , but is more efficient in accelerating and change in speed. A D winding is the same 3 cylinder engine but 2 of the 3 cylinders fire at a time. It takes more Amps to get up to speed but has more efficency at speed, and the kv rating is a lower number that the motor actually runs. Text books on this subject seem to be unavailable and so called athorities very in opinion. Aloha, KH

RE: RC Surfer
Park- I had Boardsharks with the same style rudder hatch and I use to put some silicon grease around the O-ring , but it almost always got water in it. Now I take a pushrod tube make some tight fitting ends on it and tight fitting .063" stainless wire and fill it with grease ( Maui John Inspired ) and make a waterproof pushrod and I'm done with having a steering hatch. Good luck, Karl

RE: RC Surfer
Reply from Leopard on info request- Thank you for your email. This is Angela from LeopardHobby China. In regards to D or Y, the difference is winding way. But I'm sorry it's inconvenience to publish detailed information, because this is technical secret, hope you could kindly understand. Have a good weekend! OK- So I they won't tell you what they are selling. Just throw a dart and buy that one YPC- If you read all the posts in the OSE Forum http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/showthread.php?1082-Delta-or-Wye There are 2 guys that say that D winding motors have MORE low end torque. I guess that if the kv is actually much higher on a D wind than the number indicates, that could explain not getting the expected low end torque. I am sticking with my conclusion that a Y is better for surfers. I want the slow down when I get off the gas and we are rarly at full throttle for long. I think a Y will change speeds with less current draw. Open for discussion ???? Any one knowing what a Stator is ?? Aloha, Karl

RE: RC Surfer
D or Y winding ? Well Thanks YPC for saying to read that whole thread. I had only read the first couple entries. Reading more, it is pretty contradicting what people say about the 2 winding styles. I still stick with the Surfers being better on Y style motors. Any textbook or manufacture published info on this subject ? They are putting out specks on the motors they sell with out any explanation of what they mean. I am still not clear on what the Number before the Y or D means. What is a Stator? I just tried to Email Leopard, but I doubt they have any litreture. Thats not the first Goodbye from Jimi , We will see ?? Kite- Great Helmet shots !!!! Aloha, Karl

RE: RC Surfer
Hi Dom- It sounds like something is going on besides cooling. I have never put the tubes that close to the keel. I try to get um out in a clear space to keep from turbulence. (Maybe not possible on that board). then I get the exaust just behind the intakes. I have been using NanoTech's. I have my LVC set at 3.6v and if I go to cut off I have been over the 80% usage. Now I just uped it to 3.7 v I hate chasing around a misto problem !! Good luck !! One thing that is a factor that contributes to motor function is if it is a Y (Wye) or D (Delta) winding. Before most of the motors we were getting didn't say but the Leopards are giving you the choice. I have been trying to read up on this and so far I think we should stay away from D windings as they are better for high speed and not for torque. Aloha, Karl

RE: RC Surfer
Dom- I would say that your pick-ups are to far forward. I have mine about even with the prop or just in front. If you are bouncing they will come out of the water on bigger waves.( The board you show in the photo) I have the depth the absolute min. (One diameter of the tubing) I take a blowtorch and bend the intakes in a U shape to keep the water moving . I guess that it is about a 35 degree entry angle. I also run the exaust tube out the bottom, this helps pull the water out. I have a 100 amp Castle ESC and it gets to 120 F I still think you guys should be using aprox. 2400 kv motors !!! Aloha, Karl

RE: RC Surfer
Jimi- If you have a pretty drag free driveshaft I don't think that it matters so much. If not so easy turning then it is better to go bigger prop less kv. I was using my 2 cell today and I think that the run time is less than on the 3 cell cause I am hitting the gas harder more of the time. Kite- Nice looking Quiver !!! Aloha, Karl

RE: RC Surfer
Yo - Quite the can of worms I opened. Thanks for such considerations. Dom hit on what I was saying in that it takes a lot of power to accelerate to speed these heavy, draggy little boats. My thought is I a high kv motor doesn't have tork to get them moving easly. I think you are burning power trying to get out of the hole.( Especially in shorebreak) It doesnt matter how many cells you are on. It is like trying to get your bicycle started in 5th gear. There are a bunch of factors so it is impossible to know for sure what is exactly the best set up for you . My main point is with more tork and less speed I think you could go longer. Best regards !!! Aloha, Karl

RE: RC Surfer
Jimi & Dom- I know that you don't really care what a Yank Sepo has to say but I need to give you my 2 cents on your last discussion anyway. Don't write back telling me I'm wrong please! Down the road if you have the inkling try it. Jimi, I think that you are running an inefficient set up. 3900 kv on 32mm prop is over sizes. I am running a Fiegao 540S - 2400 kv motor, 30mm x 1.4 pitch prop, I use up aprox 4500 mAh (3 cell) and go all over the place at balistic speeds and go for easy 30 min. My weight is 4.5 Lbs. about the same. I do however have a solid shaft on Bronze bushings which is less drag that your Flex shaft. (more reason for you to go lower KV, same prop) Today I switched to a new prop of the same size but not carved down over a long time and it seemed to use up the battery quicker than my old prop. That made me think I am even on the over size on prop. Top end was insane. Our swell is going off but holiday crowds and not favorable tide and wind combo. Aloha, Karl

Especially for Fishi Hi guys- I dont like to show what I am doing untill it is working good, and this is far from perfected but desided to show the direction I am going anyway. Something to let your brains re-engage with. as a lot of you know I am using a 4 ch set up to manuver my ( Boardsharks) guy and rudder independently. This leaves the elevator stick unused. I am all for not waisting anything. How great would it be to be able to jam down on the tail in a turn or keep the nose from going under on a steep drop!! Here are some shots of my attempts to make the 4th Dimension.
