RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Maiden flight of #036 - another happy customer/builder. Not quite completely finished, but enough to catch the attention of the surrounding people...a non-scale but scale-like finish, still missing the pink stripe and Star on the cowl. DLE-111cc, 139 inches wingspan at 35% scale... Enjoy...

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
#38 in the works, also a 35% scale, will be finished in Yellow-White and Metalic Blue Stripes, closely resembling N411LR "Tweetie" but with the Starburst scheme on the wheelpants as well and no star on the cowl...

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Hi Bobbo although expected that she´d fly well, a maiden flight is always an event!! Again, she looks very good and that color scheme is just beautiful. Congratulations for a well done job!! I think your puppy inside got a little sick of your first flight... Seeing those photos and the landscaping behind, it reminded of my trip to Johannesburg 5 years ago. I loved your country and JB. I could definitely live there...have friends over there too. Hope to be back in some time. If I ever get back, be sure I´ll contact you... Rgds Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Hi Rob thanks for your comments. And yes, a few strange looks but also some honks when a fellow modeler with a trailer passed me... About the dash, please tell me the exact width of your dash board so I can adjust it to the WH design. Well, if you don´t have your mind 100% made about your next yellow-n-white project, why dont give one of my kits a try? goto my website at marcusmodelfactory dot com and check it out. Make sure you have your Google Chrome translator turned on. Tell us how the maiden flight went, after doing it it. Post photos. Rgds Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Two weeks ago I delivered # 40, a 35% Scale Super Decathlon, done in the N90GK colors (Greg Koontz), some 85% ready. The new owner is my former Fiberglass specialist - he closed his production after laminatig the pieces for this plane, and turned over the molds to me, that was all part of the deal. Now my FG parts will be laminated in my hometown, which saves me a lot of time and some money too. He will paint and istall all FG parts himself, as well as doing all the vynil stickers and other finishing touches. I drove 150 miles with the beast on the roof top, not going over 50mph. I built the rack all my myself, as the Mercedes OEM racks are too expensive... Enjoy the pix.. Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
HI Bobbo - she looks very good! Ya done good as they say in Good Ol´America... Despite of the scale (design) flaws, which are definitely NOT YOUR fault, this is the best WH Super Decathlon I´ve seen...congratulations!!! I am sure she flies very well, and you will have many hours of joy flying her. And don´t be too shy of the wind, she likes it... Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
It really looks nice from that angle. Yes, the small jobs before you actually are ready to maiden will take up a lot o ftime...but patience pays. Double check everything. did you do the wing struts already? I haven´t seen them yet. Don´t forget the jury struts as they are important to avoid flexing. The paint job looks fantanstic! About the windshield: if I can give you a little piece of advice, go all the way and build a mock-up of that specific area, and buildup the windshield of balsasheet , fill and sand to make a nice mold. It must not be as smooth as a glass mold. Cut your Polycarb oversize (make a paper pattern first) and lay it over the mold, get some form of attaching weights to all 3 edges: top and side posts. Use a heat gun set to mid temp and wrk slowly over the corners, the weight will pull it over the curves. Protect the areas not to be affected by the heat with some piles of old magazines or any other form of heavy yet flexible material. You don´t want the front area to get "wavy"...you just want to get the corners rounded off smoothly. After cooling down you can take everything off and cut to size. Voilá, you´ll have a nice windshield - and if something happens, you can make another one to replace the first one. Look at the pix, this is the way I do it. Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Bobbo_ZA I guess that metallic blue will shine nicely in the sun. Well done. I used to use Oratex on my Decathlons, switched to Oracover as most of the customers didn´t care about the scale(er) look of the fabric. Keep the px coming, and know what, those 5% are the best part! you always have to do something on your plane... Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Joe, yes the starburst design has had small variations over the years, but mainly in color combination and pinstripping width. As you may know the pinstripes are not painted, they´re tape to seal the paint edges of the stars and tails. The tape width has changed a little over the years, but the actual OEM overlapping starburst design and placement has not. Whenever you see a different, although very close, starburst design, you´ll be problably seeing a rebuilt and/or re-covered/repainted aircraft. Yes, the fuselage stripes and the wheelpants shape and paint style have changed. So has the landing gear leg thickness and shape too. And on Citabrias they put fibreglass tips lately, which distorted the original Citabria wingtip shape. I just hope they never change the cowl again, as it has evolved and slightly changed in shape too. IMHO, the most recognizeable feature of any of the Champ descendants lineage is the cowl, and that´s where most modelmakers do their worst mistake. Fortunately I have been able to keep it right on mine. As for the specific paint scheme you´re looking for, I have a pic which may come very close to what you´re looking for. Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Bill and Joe, I think help is on the way...search Airliners.net or even google images for Super Decathlons and you will find tons of pix. The starburst scheme is the standard Decathlon scheme since forever, with invasion stripes under the wing. After 2003 or so, they replaced the invasion stripes with the same top wing scheme. They also introduced the sunray scheme, which is simpler and some 15,000 bucks less expensive when buying a factory new airplane. also goto my site marcusmodelfactory dot com and check the galleries, all models have a different scheme, and one of them is blue and yellow. RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Joe welcome aboard! Yes, this has been the subject of discussion many times over the years this thread is online... I suggest you to read the full thread before continuing - to save you a lot of stress, either by tossing the actual building or going all the way thru with the previous builder´s solutions on hand. Most of them didn´t care about the scale-infidelity (!) and just built a beautiful, stand-off-in-the-next-county scale and good flying model. Those who cared did a few mods to make it closer to scale. The main issue is about the front end, which is totally wrong. I am posting here a couple of pix of an acquaintance who did change the firewall (and cowl etc to match) to give it a closer to scale look. If you want to scale it all the way out, you better choose another set of plans or kit. Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Hi fellas, today I just wanted to share a few pix of a SD 35% a customer is building from my kit - actually, his second MMF kit, as he already built a 30% before... This beauty is being built to accomodate a DLE-111. The paint scheme is a personal fancy yet very attractive and could be used on a full-scale SD without any problem... Tell me what you think...it´s close to be completed, and of course I will post the pix here when done. Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Hi all here are a few pix of my Citabria on her first outing. We had our 27th edition of annual Fly-In, which happens to be the largest meeting in Brasil for years now. I didn´t yet install any engine or radio, only a fake Spinner and prop not to leave her "faceless" - i actually took her there to be sold. Didn´t sell her, butgot a couple of inquiries. If I keep her, I will install a fake radiator, a turtledeck antenna and a landing light, as well as a fake exhaust stack and a doorstep, to complete the illusion. pssibly also a cockpit interior. I also took the opportunity to shoot a couple of pictures to replace the fullsize Citabria pic I had as a teaser/banner on my website. I tried to recreate the same position, angle and lighting conditions, and although I didn´t take her to the runway, the effect is pretty much the same. I think I succeded. Make the comparison for yourselves. I just didn´t notice the prop wasn´t in the same position, but who cares...??! Enjoy the pix. Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Thank you Tom. Here a little update on the Citabria build I have yet to clearcote the cowl, and the stars on the tail ended up a little oversized but that´s ok, it doesn´t spoil the overall effect...the checkerboard is the most time consuming item do do - all done in white/black Oracover, ironed on. RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Hi Guys a little update on the Citabria build... Finished covering the Fuselage, yet a few Decoration details to be done, like the stars circle on the tail and the reg #. Waiting for additional Red Oracover to arrive to cover the stab and elevator. The sun shining thru the wall makes a funny effect on the tail... Working slowly because I got sidetracked by the finish of an Airworld FW-190 A-8, you can see the pix here [link]http://www.rc-network.de/forum/showthread.php/309195-Airworld-FW-190-mit-MOKI-215ccm-Stern-Bau-in-Brasilien?p=2664939&posted=1[/link] Enjoy Marcus

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
A little update on my 30% Citabria project... took the Mardi Gras (here we say Carnaval) holidays to finish the build, now it's ready to cover...haven't had much time since I got sidetracked by the finsih of a FW-190 with a Moki Radial. There is not much difference to a Super Decathlon except for the wing profile, tips and flaps...but of course the paint scheme will clearly show a Citabria Enjoy. Marcus
