RE: alining both ailerons
I just made mine...vertical dowel in a small base with a curve section attached to match the arc of the TE of elev or aileron... the curved sectoion has ruler measurements.... you can put one behind each aileron... cost me nothing as i had the wood on hand and 5 mins to make.

agree.. Gray.. we're luck to be in a time with such marvelous advances.. when my fingers tremple and my site is dim.. will be nice to have some "assistance" to help me bring her home safely so that we can continue enjoying model flight for as long as we can...

RE: How to repair this
If it's one piece.. that's a perfect break. The piece remaining on the pod second support. THe post going up into the pod with bracing on four contact points and the rear support will be plenty strong. Don't know if I agree with just butt gluing wing panels together?? for the pod.. what I was suggesting was the pic with filler pieces iniside the pod front and back between the tri-stock where they run fore and aft of the post... and on the bottom, front of the post. If you look at how it was originally designed.. doesn't look like there was support at all. I cannot tell if the post went vertical way up and was epoxied d tied to what looks like a vertical support in the pod itself. I doubt it or the pod wouldn't have come apart so cleanly. The rear support piece running down the rear of post t is the main support... the tr-stock offer lateral stability. Does the rear curved support run up inside the pod at all. Seems like no or there wouldn't be much for a tank? Apologize.. just re-read your post.. "Pod snapped at the top". You need to see how much is up inside and then remove it. I would then do this along with the pic on the left....dovetail a new piece, being sure to extend it up however far the original was ...face the sides with light ply, epoxy, clamp along it's length, then round the front and feather the rear a bit..

RE: How to repair this
The mariner is now an ARF right.. i dont think the formally make the kit anymore?? Looking at the pod... you can see how it was put together so I would take that as my lead. Looks like they were two pieces (pod and post) and then joined. I would clean it up so you get a good wood to wood contact.. being sure to keep the thrust line the same, remvoe the covering on both sides of the bottom of the pod and use tri-stock for extra support runing from the front of the post to to the end of the support on the pod, rouding the front off and fairing the rear of the tri-stock. If yoiu have access inside..with the post being up front... you can add add'l tri-stock support there as well on each side as I would think the posat rises up past the bottom of the pod. None of this will add much weight. For the wing... I would pull the covering back sevral inches such that I could re-iron it back down keeping the same look. The best way to repair a wing regarding joiner damage, in my opinion, is to open it up for good access and do it correctly as oppoed to trying to clean out the area and slipping a new one in with epoxy. You won't be able to get enough epoxy where you need it.

RE: Great Planes 40 Clipped Cub Kit Rebuild
Root cause found.. reason for not sure I took a break from my honey do list because yesterdays "unexpected" outcome was knawing at me... There is substantial wash-in on the the left panel which caused the hard roll to the right. At this point that that is all I can tell because thrust line tests were unable to be verified due to such a short.... I hesitate to use the word "flight" :). I must have built it in during the repair. Since the left panel received most of the damage, the leading edge and several ribs needed work approx 1/2way out, hoever the spars were fine all the way out so "I didnt think it was an issue" and made the repair flat on the bench.. but didnt pin the work :(. The dowel test made this issue readily apparent as they didnt line up when viewed from the side....the front of the dowel on the left wing was up and the rear was down when viewing from the side compared to the right wing's dowel. Several years ago I face planted a 4*40 and had to re-attach wing tips about half way out. the old dowel test showed no issues and it flew fine. Yet another lesson learned... the simplest things to check because one thinks they know it all are often the most overlooked. Good news is this is an easy fix... what I plan to do: 1) Reverse twist and heat the covering....once in alginment... 2) And this is the biggie.... re-align the strut attachment to the wing to hold that postion. When the strut tab hole has issue lining up to the fuse tab hole I'll know it becoming out of whack again. I figure heating the covering and the functional strut will work together. Hope to work on this tonight.. and be ready for the Monday Holiday..

RE: Great Planes 40 Clipped Cub Kit Rebuild
Could have gone better [:o] Very minor damage...... Seems to have been some "wash-in" on one side so guess I didnt check as careful as i thoiught. Ailerons on high rates didnt seem to offer much help which is odd ??? Now and then I have bad scenarios that pile up letting me know sometihng is amiss.... 1) the plug went bad, so pulled the 4 stroke plug in the N17 and of course didn't run fully right, but I press on. 2) Couple ground loops and broken prop later (forgot i needed to get on the rudder pronto)... 3) I then stall on the flight line waiting for someone as they took some extra time to clear the runway...... Finally.. the take off run.. doh ! I'll fix the mnor issues, and triple check the wing this time and hopefully will see a better outcome. On the bright side i picked up an "old" 36" span cessna 195 kit with fiberglass fuse for 20 bucks. Should make a nice little electric.

Doesn't need to upgrade.. just needs to think....Upgrading won't help not thinking I have both types of radios which one woujld think would be easier to forget about extending the antenna. He's lucky he's got money I guess...

RE: flying around with flaps down
Flying to slow will lead to a tip stall on some planes, which is what you're probably calling a snap. Snaps require rudder, elevator to occur under normal conditions. View the video at 2 min and 30 secs and you'll see someone tip stall with disastrous results. THe plan is practically wobbling on the approach. You can hear someone say you got to fly it in and he's right... it's not a cub for pete's sake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQJ3TzSZkpo Moving CG back increases instability (aerobatic ability) which i beleive will just compound your problem. This plane has a long nose and short tail moment... (centered wing)... looks like it needs speed throughout the flight envelope to behave... just my opinion. Could be a thrust line issue as well. What happens when you go idle at speed with flaps neutral?

Standard switch with lipo and regulator
I have moved from NIMH 4.8 to Lipo 11.1 for my glow planes using a regulator set at 5v. Can I use the standard switch that comes with most radios in between the lipo and the regulator. The regulator has wires on the input side as thin as the switch wires. At the moment... i'm unplugging battery from regulator. What I have been trying to understand is.... does the volts coming out of the battery depend on the pull from the downstream device. For example.. it's not like the pressure behind a dam.. where a small hole and the water will come out with brute force due to hte pressure behind the wall. Since receivers can't be plugged directly into a lipo I assume the volts coming out is 7.4 or 11.1 based on cells. Would I need a heavy duty switch I can mount on the exterior? I moved to 11.1 rather than 7.4 in case i lose a cell I sitll have the volts needed. Mike

RE: Setting motor position
That looks like its made for electric with that box mount setup. I would beef that up a bit if your able. Generally engines are mounted offset for right and downthrust and washers, etc.. as suggested are used to provide the correct angles if the firewall is not pre-angled which brings the nose of hte motor into alighnment with the cowl opening.

Thanks for pointing out the tech specs tab... the DR1 is my build after next. Could I get away with a 26cc meaning is that enough. I like to fly in a scalelike manner on my scale builds. I believe it takes a 23 to 30?

Might be to late but that big vertical stab usually can use a little support like some say 1/2" tri-stock at the bottom... faired in front and back. I wouldnt bother now unless you experience issue going forward.

RE: Dehavilland Dh-2
I noticed that Model Airplane News mag offers two versions.... a full-on scale one and a sport version both for .60 power. Was the RCM plans versions a scale build regarding construction, etc... or more of a sport build?. I want to buld one of these one day but want to use glow... but all that open structure and wire is giving me second thoughts with the fuel residue... but i cant bring myself to electrify it.
