RE: Soldering irons
ORIGINAL: Orion1024 A lot of guys don't like the butane soldering irons, but I wouldn't ever go back to an electric. It's portable and the temperature is adjustable. I've used mine for everything from doing delicate surface mount soldering to soldering 10 gauge wire to deans connectors. Even with 10 gauge wire, you don't need to turn it up anywhere close to maximum.
I have to agree there are benefits of butane irons. Good power in a compact size, and no cord is a big plus too. Especially if your workbench is as cluttered as mine and you don't have to worry about the cord knocking stuff off. [:D] The only drawback I've come across is having to be careful where your exhaust port is pointed.

RE: Soldering irons
ORIGINAL: cirec I found a 60 watt soldering iron by Hobbico at a hobby shop for $7.99. Anyone have experience with this because that's cheap. Cheaper than my 11 watt actually.
I can't vouch for the quality of that particular unit, but I'd say 60 watts should be enough power for what you'll need it to do. Since you haven't soldered before, I'd suggest getting some wire to practice on first.

RE: Will Work on RC's
Yeah, I think you could get business. If you have the time to put into it, it's worth a try at least, right? The hardest part is making the right people aware of the services you provide. It might take a while, so don't give up right away if you can't get any business. I'm trying to start my own RC related business right now too, and it's going very slow. I've been at it for 6 months now and have only made one sale. Anyway, good luck with your business venture!

You got some great action shots there! I'd love to try out a track like that for RC driving. I remember in high school there was a running track like that. The rubber is supposed to cushion the impact on the runners or something like that.

RE: New Offroad RC for Noob
ORIGINAL: Captain Rusty Definitely don't go any smaller then a 1/10 scale rig, they would be too small to drive ''offroad'' and as plasmaedge said, they'd just get boring fast. Traxxas does have some of the best part support out there, so a bandit might not be a bad idea, but if you're looking for offroad, I would start to steer more away from a buggy and into a stadium truck or something for a little more ground clearance and what not.
I second that notion. What ever you go with, don't go with anything smaller then 1/10 scale. Unless you have a smooth dirt track to drive them on, the 1/16 and smaller vehicles aren't too great at off road. Just as a thought but how about a Tamiya Dual Hunter? It's not the fastest truck around (stock anyhow) but I've always been impressed by how well it handles thick grass. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTDL5

RE: Are People Crap Every where????
ORIGINAL: plasma 327 To those of you with supporting words, Thank You... For those of you with criticizing words, Thank You also... I do think though, the way i was raised is the reason i handled the situation the way i did.. Some have stated WE as a society have become lazy and dependent on everybody except for our selves.. Mostly i feel there is no HONOR left among us... At some point it has to change.. I feel we are headed along a road with a destination we all will regret... For those that posted about the legal issues, i was preparied to take my medicine... If it was i had to pay a price for my actions i was ready for the ramifications of my actions.. I was going to be held accountable as i should be.. In my heart i now i did what was called for at the time... Our contry was built on these morals and they have been lost.. Some posted, ''could you have talked it out'' ? NO!!! It was time for action.. So many now day's feel no matter what crime they committ, What pain they inflict, what damage they cause, an ''I'M SORRY'' removes then of any accountability... That is where our society stands now.. It pains me as well as others to see and hear this ''acceptable behavior'' everyday.. It has to change!!!!
I'm with you 110% on this! Society is indeed very messed up now days, and too many people think it's their right to always be given second (or more) chances when they screw up. To be honest though, I really doubt that any turn around can be expected to happen any time soon, if ever. Too many people are too far set in their lazy and dependent mindsets. On a side note, this reminds me of a story about when my grandpa was a boy. His father was a drunk and sold off his .22 rifle for booze one day. That man needed a swift sock to the jaw too.

RE: What is a good Electric Kit to Start with
Yeah, I'd agree with the forming consensus that Tamiya is the way is to go. If not for offering good beginner vehicles, then for the fact they're almost the only ones offering stuff in kit form still. Myself, I think a Dual Hunter or Blackfoot Extreme would be good to go with. Same chassis, just 4WD and 2WD variations. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTDL5 http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFSG8&P=ML

RE: Need input on an idea
ORIGINAL: Devils-Reject patents are not that cheap. plus unless your going to mass produce them for sell the rights its useless and also like he said a chiness so. can and will just take the idea, pay the works 13 cents an hour and kill any comp in the usa
My thoughts exactly. I looked into the average costs of getting a patent and it seems to be about $1,000. Unless I'm not looking in the right spot. I thought about doing what's called a "poor man's patent", where you mail yourself a few pictures and drawing of your idea. The date stamp the post office puts on that sealed envelope then proves you had that idea at that time. That's all it does though. No protection against copiers, just proof you had the idea first. Since that's pretty much useless too, there's no point in even wasting a stamp on a vain effort to protect my idea.

RE: Need input on an idea
ORIGINAL: proanti1 Not too smart posting something like this without at least applying for a patent. Its a really good idea, but would be a shame for HK or something to come across this thread and start producing them.
Well, I thought about that, and there are basically 3 reasons I think a patent would be useless in my situation. First, if some Chinese company did find this thread and wanted to start cranking them out for their own profit, a US patent is going to mean absolutely nothing to them. Second, let's say a US company wanted to do the same thing and start making these for their sole profit. A patent only grants you a limited amount of protection on your design. A big company with a few lawyers could easily find their way around the patent laws to make a design just different enough so it's not considered infringement on my design. Third, I'm just a guy making these in my basement workshop, trying to start a small business on the side. I simply cannot afford the time and money it would require to get a patent. Also, I think it would prove to be un-patentable in the first place, as it's far too simple of a design. I do appreciate your concern, though, and am also glad you like the idea. Thank you!

Need input on an idea
I had this idea to make a mount to attache a camera to a radio. The idea is to make it much easier for someone to both film and drive single handedly. Looking at radio designs, I felt the commonplace Traxxas TQ radio would be easiest to build a mount for, as the bar on the front makes a great mounting point. Well, I have the first prototype done, and I would be grateful for input on it anyone can give. I'm going to test it myself for a bit, make a few revisions, and prepare to make a couple of test units for other people to try out. Here's what it looks like: [image]http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/ab142/hondawhitefox/prototypes/DSCN0636.jpg[/image] [image]http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/ab142/hondawhitefox/prototypes/DSCN0637.jpg[/image] [image]http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/ab142/hondawhitefox/prototypes/DSCN0635.jpg[/image] [image]http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/ab142/hondawhitefox/prototypes/DSCN0638.jpg[/image] The later units will have cleaner, more finished look to them. Also, given the option of having the camera attaching knob fixed in the center of the platform, or having it movable to the three positions shown, what would be preferred? The reason I ask is because once attached with a retaining washer, the knob is rather difficult to remove.
