RE: FEJ 1/5,5 F-16 build thread
Ok Rex, Just one more Little tid bit to review................ The Arctic Aggressor Black white and grey camo really really works. I mean at certain angles you cant even see the F16 out line. This was way beyond comfortable for me, so this weekend she goes into the paint booth for some NON Scale touch ups. Ok look at the pictures taken by Uncle Joe's ginormous huge lens and try to picture what this spec looks like to your naked eye. See my point. My next F16 will be the Netherlands Orange Lion. That You can see...hehe. Kevin

RE: FEJ 1/5,5 F-16 build thread
Hello Rex, Here is some info for you. 1. Balance point seems great at first carbon fiber wing tube. Plug wings into fuse take wire or such wrap around tube and balance at that point. My take off and approach was great. 2. Add 1/4 inch extra heavy duty spring to front nose gear, to keep nose at high AOA on take off. 3. If Tam is making pipe make sure he uses correct diameters for front and rear of pipe. FEJ's stock pipes are too wide, thus have good take off thrust but lower top end speed. Here in the states we mainly fly off pavement and take off is no problem. I would rather have more top end speed when needed. Just my preference, and FYI info. 4. With P200 I added no weight in nose. Most install Items are at the sides of the main cockpit area. I did however figure out that you can cut 1 inch off the bottom of the tub and re-glue it back on and there for be able to place items below the installed cockpit tub. It will also raise the seat and pilot which is also needed. 5. Make sure the front wood/carbon nose plate is really glued in well, I mean really glued in well, Hint Hint... 6. Without a doubt, once the rear air brakes have been cut off, have Dan re-epoxy with glass or carbon fiber that area. I discovered this one and discussed it with Olivier. Thats all for now. Good luck and i also want to see a set of new Gear from Matrix. Kevin

RE: Graupner 1:5,5 Hawk
Really sorry to hear the end result. If the gear is still ok, I recommend SAVE your Hard Earned Money on that expensive Hawk and be one of the first 10 to order the FEJ 103 inch length hawk with out gear. I am sure your gear (if still repairable) can be used on this similar air frame. Cost for FEJ Hawk with out gear maybe $2200 USD. And you will be in the air again. How Graupner, Airworld, and Carf can charge $7,000 to $10,000 for their KITS.. is beyond me. Again, really sorry for the loss, but here is an inexpensive way to have a scale large hawk that you wont have to steal from the college trust fund. Best Wishes. Kevin

Ali, Please comment on the fuel cylinoid. It looks like it is one unit with 2 sets of flow. Is it 2 units that look like one stacked, or is this one unit that is something new. Also, do you usually use 2 recievers with the powerbox Royal, or one as shown. The Hawk looks awesome. Best Regards Kevin

RE: FEJ 1/5,5 F-16 build thread
Angus, David Shulman did the maiden for me. Make sure your CG starts at about 215 cm, or just use the front CF spar as CG point. At the 200 cm as stated on FEJ web site, it is too nose heavy and hard to rotate off the ground. The take off was awesome, the one go around looked very solid. Then the engine shut off, and had a dead stick. $50 in damage, and $60 in postage will get my bird good as new. Angus, I used the supplied by pass and a P200, I was told the by pass is too small for this engine to NOT use it. Just place fod screen on engine and go. Make sure you secure tanks in with some sort of glue, I will use silicone so there is no rubbing and cause for static. The plane when wet is heavy, but seemed to fly beautiful. Oh, one last thing, I cut 3/4 inch of a stronger spring and added it into the front strut to keep a positive AOA. You may want to try that also. Regards, Kevin Marks

RE: First Flame-Out
As Todd mentioned above, he witnessed a "Power Failure" over the weekend, that unfortunatly was mine. It was the maiden of my FEJ Big F16 with a P200 just returned from Jet Cat. For all purposes this is a NEW P200 with A new 2 cell lipo battery. The RX is a new JR 922, 2.4 with 2 sets of brand new A123 batts. I did not install the aux throttle cable, but will do so now. Interesting enough, Bob Wilcox had given me a hand setting up the failsafe with out a problem. However right before David Shulman began the start up sequence, we could not get the start up flashing lights??? I opened up the canopy area to have a look see, made sure all wires were plugged in, and sure enough the jetcat ECU came to life. I am not sure if there is a bad connection or not, but after retrieving the F16, (by the way, amazingly very little damage) I noticed the tail cone to the turbine was very lose. Again not sure if that had any cause for my engine stopping. I was advised to keep all wires away from large fuel tanks, add a cap and 1/2 of static fluid, and make sure fuel tanks do not rub side walls of fiberglass fuse. I am very lucky to still have my bird, so I too want to get to the root of why these engines my shut down. Thanks Kevin Marks

RE: Sun Valley Jets (Ron Long's Bad A$$ Jet show)
Tony and Ron, Thanks for putting on the 1st Sun Valley Fliers Jet Meet. I know many of our club members would have rather flown their stuff so thanks for being patient and giving up the field to us for a few days. I must say I was impressed, the electrical was awesome, the sound system was great, and the calm wind could not have been better. It was great to meet some new peeps, and see some old friends. Lowell Wexler " I'll be your wingman anyday !", It was great meeting and spending some time with you. Nadine also really enjoyed spending time with some really nice people, eating Lowells bannana bread, watching some awesome flights, eating some great food, and seeing some of the nicest jets in the hobby. She really liked when Joe C. and Jason Somes sat with her keeping her company.... Watch it boys she's taken,,, LOL.. Over all, just a great weekend thanks to everyone who made it happen. PS. The maiden of my FEJ 1/5.5 F16 went off amazing and terrible. The take off was smooth and just seemed to levitat off the ground with the P200. David Schulman was in control. The low fly by over the run way was smooth and steady, as David began his left turn the engine stalled. and with 12 lbs of fuel she went down FAST... This is a testimate that FEJ builds strong jets. Very little damage occured, the left wing pylons were ripped off, the nose cone and wood formers in the nose bent, and the rear under belly fins ripped off. Besides a few FG repairs and new clear canopy, this bird will fly very soon, AMAZING. David thank you for steady hands, and resting it as gentle as you did. With all due respect, you deserve this years "Big Baller" award. Congrats, and thank you. PSS. Oh yeah, Nadine said that Uncle Joe is now her new Uncle also... she loves your photos.

RE: FEJ 1/5,5 F-16 build thread
Thank you Guy, I just completed mine, and brought it out to the Arizona Jet Meet. I was going to maiden it today, but was not allowed untill later in the day. I needed to leave early, so I will try and maiden tomorrow. I had set the CG at 200 mm, but based on your recommendation, and that of Finks from Germany, I will start at 215mm and see how that goes. I did in fact glue the pylons to the bottom of the wings so I will have to maiden with that extra drag. The P200 I just had serviced has the new CNC aluminum compresser wheel and it looks so nice. I will give full report after maiden. Kevin

RE: Fly Eagle 5in1 valve question
Andy, I had the same problem, every time I turn the EV5 from FEJ on the system would act like the toggle switch on the TX was in the landing gear retracted position. Simple... RE- BIND. This will show the EV5 that it needs to turn on in the gear down setting. At least this is how I fixed mine. Try that and let me know if it worked. I do not think Jeff was using a FEJ EV5, probably another brand. What do you need to accomplish and on which bird. Maybe I can help. There are small holes on the bottom of the unit, when off it lets all air out of system but not the main tanks. Gear, gear doors, and brakes will have no air pressure. If you need constant air pressure like I needed for my FEJ F16 main gear lock, you need to plug a servo lead into the top of the EV5 and set up the servo to the blue air valve supplied with the kit. This will keep full pressure on the needed system. Also set the EV5 to set up #3 by pressing the button on top of the EV5. Hope this helps. Take care. Kevin

Chad, After discharging and charging one of my A123 packs, when I measure the voltage with a volt meter placing the volt meter tong to the back wire, and the red tong to the middle JR plug white wire I get 7.2 volts seems like a nice full charge. But when I measure black and red wire on the JR plug I get 3.6 volts. It is like this on both my packs. What does this mean?? Thanks Kevin Ok I think I figured it out, the red wire is measuring only one cell.

RE: FEJ 1/5,5 F-16 build thread
I received my gear back from FEJ on Monday. I had just got this kit 2 months ago and most upgrades I came to find out had already been done. I few new "stronger" parts I have been told were installed. The gear look great and the main wheels seem not to bow inward as they did before. I installed the new gear in about 20 minutes, set up some air to see if they worked. I started with the front gear. After trying many cycles the front nose gear just did not want to retract all the way inside the fuse. After inspecting this movement over and over I noticed 2 things. Firstly I hand sanded the middle white plastic stopper slightly. It is this plastic stopper that was binding with the front strut lock. Once this was sanded to an angle to allow the lock to slide up on top the movement was much more fluid. Second, the ingenious method of making the front nose strut twist when retracted is from the long steering arm. This arm rests at a slight angle when the nose wheel is straight, and by having this slight angle when retracted, it forces the nose wheel to twist. I tried different angles to the steering rod, discovering that by increasing the bend slightly helped the pivot and twisting motion tremendously. Also note the I needed to cut just a very small piece of this steering rod due to the front air cylinder hitting it when retracted. I have now cycled the gear 30 times and they have worked flawless, with extreme force. I did notice that the main gear doors do not open much greater then the travel of the main gear, this may cause rubbing with added air pressure. I will increase the travel so the main gear doors open further. So far This FEJ is finally shaping up. Kevin

Hey there Terry, Sorry to hear your flame out. I am expecting my FEJ F16 gear back this week. Would the gear cycle everytime when you checked it on the ground?? Just curious if in fact the cylinders are still not doing the job with all the added air pressure on take off. As said before, do a good check over and call James with a parts list. You can have this bird flying again. Best wishes. Kevin

How long can a battery cable go ?
Hello All, How long can the battery cables be to the reciever. I would like to place the reciever in the center of the large F16 and need to place batteries in front nose. Will long battery cables about 60 inches cause any type of RX interference. I will be using a JR922 reciever, with 4 satalites. Thanks for any recommendations. Kevin

RE: FEJ 1/5,5 F-16 build thread
Hey Terry, I am not sure if this will work, I think this is what James explained to me. For the mains, the front lock cylinder needs to be on it's own high flow valve. The servo is plugged into the ev5 and programed so when the gear goes up, the front cylinder-lock is unlocked, and when gear is in the belly, the clyinder then changes air flow to lock it in. When the gear is extended, the front cylinder unlocks, the gear goes down and the front cylinder air pressure changes to lock it in the down position. So it is my understnding that the front cylinder needs to move 2 ways each cycle. I am still waiting for my gear to return, so I have not tried this out yet. I do know that connecting air hoses front to front and back to back did not work on the newer gear that came with my kit 2 months ago. Please try this and report. Kevin

FEJ's NEW F86
Hello All: Here are a few pics of the first FEJ F86. From the looks of it the detailing seems right on. The size is 1 inch smaller then the Skymaster F86 with all the same scale functions. This is still a prototype and some details are still being considered. I am told it uses more carbon fiber in all the right places, working front wing slats, and new sliding canopy. It seems that it was raining that day the photos were taken, so a slight amount of drips can be seen on fuse. Enjoy.
