RE: Volcano Sandrail
I want this to be as close to rear-engine as possible, so I'm looking at a Stampede tranny for like [link=http://www.ebay.com/itm/Traxxas-4109-Nitro-Stampede-Complete-Transmission-Slipper-Disc-Brakes-/190679529049?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c6562b659]$40 on eBay[/link]. I still think I'll use Volcano suspension arms, hub carriers, steering, etc because I have tons of that stuff, but if I can shove the engine and tranny into the very back then I have room in the middle for some scale details. However, if I flip my sh .18 sideways to work with the pede tranny, is there a header I can run that will keep the pipe pointing the right way? Or would the pipe even care if it was flipped 90 degrees? My only concern is if the pipe is perpendicular to the body, it won't be adequetely protected from a collision, ie sticking out the side. I ran across this earlier today, and it has become my inspiration for the project: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10217293/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm

RE: Volcano Sandrail
ORIGINAL: NewRageRC I see what you're saying.. if you don't have a pile of parts laying around buying a new parts car might be the way to go. But remember, electronics can be had pretty cheap. Hobbyking has receivers and servos for around $10 apiece. Depending on the weight you're going to end up with and what your gearing is going to be like, the Tornado might be ok. You're going to end up with a lot more stress on a single diff, both because it will see twice as much power and because you won't have the front wheels pulling it along. It would suck to commit to one diff and find out it didn't work (not really sure how intercheangable they are, might not be that big of a deal).
The rear diff will, in fact, see far more power for the reasons NewRage explained. Stock, power is being used to spin the front wheels. As a RWD vehicle, that power is still created and has to go somewhere, specifically the rear diff. Honestly, I'm more worried about the drive cups/dogbones than the actual differential. I think I'll go run my Volcano with no front driveshaft in a parking lot for 5 or 6 tanks and see if I blow up the rear diff, and go from there. If it lives, I'll just get a tornado and tear it apart. If not, I'll find an alternative.

RE: Volcano Sandrail
Alright, fair enough. My only thought was that for ~$150 I can pick up a Tornado from the LHS and pull the driveline/engine from that, and use most the leftover parts as extras for my Volcano, as opposed to spending well over that $150 to get a SH .21 or even just another .18, tuned pipe, center tranny, rear differential, fuel tank, etc etc. So, the most cost-effective scenario I can see besides the above leaves me buying an Earthquake or an Aftershock and gutting it, and trying to sell the extra stuff on Ebay or something. Redcats electronics are craptastic, but they should work for awhile, anyway. If you think the Volcano diff can handle the power, I'd far prefer to go that route because of cost, otherwise I'll probably look around for a used tmaxx or savage or something to get parts from.

Volcano Sandrail
Hey, I've been toying with the idea of building an rc sandrail around the Volcano driveline, and I'm curious how the rear diff will hold up. To start, I want to pull out the front driveshaft, put 2.2 sand paddles on the rear and 2.2 rib tires on the front and see what happens. Will I wreak the rear diff/drive cups putting all the power through it, instead of half, or will it be fine? To compensate for the smaller tires, I've got a Shockwave tranny that I'll install. If all goes well, I'll try welding a proper chromoly tube chassis for it, but before I buy the tires, what do you think of the feasibility of a rwd-only volcano?

TRX vs SH
I know there are a lot of opinions, but if anyone has actually owned an SH .18 and TRX 3.3, I'd like some comparisons. The SH is a great motor, and has had plenty of power for my little 1:10 Redcat Volcano. I have a friend who has a TRX 3.3 with a couple gallons on it he wants to sell for ~$80. That's for the motor, header/exhaust, an air filter (looks like a MotorSaver, I've also heard mixed reviews of them), and the clutch setup. Last time I heard the motor running, it sounded like it was idling high and running a touch lean on the HSN (stalling out at high rpm), but it still seemed to have good power all around and the temp gun said it was ok. Basically, I would like to know how the 3.3 will compare to my SH in terms of power, reliability, and ease of tuning. I've heard all the SH horror stories, but mine has been outstanding. The air filter came off landing a jump yesterday, so I basically need a new motor, and I can replace the SH for $50 from Redcat. Would it be worth the risk investing in a slightly larger engine, or is the 3.3 junk? I've heard it is an "RTR" engine, and is made to be moron-proof and nothing more. Some people swear by it, while others say it will not hold a tune, lacks power compared to other similar-sized motors, and is generally a problem. Or, as I third option, I've been considering an SH.21. I know and love the SH motors, but the .21 would cost me more than my friend's TRX by the time I get a tuned pipe, etc etc for it. What do you think?

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread
Honestly, I thought the bottom end with the Volcano tranny was lacking ;). These say they fit in all HPI engines, which includes the Savage. The savage, and the Savage cluthbell fits the SH 18. So for 6 dollars, I think I will try one and see what happens. Failing that, I'll get a 13T savage clutch bell (not from that store, their price sucks and they don't even have it in stock), and try that. If it STILL doesn't work, I think a 47T savage spur gear could be jammed into the Shockwave tranny with a little bit of dremel work, maybe even a few teeth larger. Then, with at least a 13T clutch bell and a 47T spur, it should be a little better. EDIT: Also, a lot of people on RCU have said that this direct drive conversion from All About Fun Hobbies is an inprovement in both top AND bottem end, because its geared a little higher, and removes all the frition and rotational mass of the Volcano gearbox. It is a shockwave tranny and 13T bell, so I'd be inclined to think that a 13T bell could even work with the unmodified shockwave tranny.

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread
Hmm, ok. How many teeth would I want on the clutch bell to compensate for the increased gearing? Is 12 sufficiently low, or should I try to fit a 49T or even bigger spur gear into the Shockwave tranny in addition to a smaller clutch bell? ie. a savage spur or something? I figured it was geared a little high, but if that's the problem, its CRAZY high. Thanks for your help, Kristoffer

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread
As far as the clutch shoes go, the plastic one's will give you great grip, I would stick with those. I'm not sure about the integy one's, but the HPI clutch shoes are almost identical. The Savage clutch bells will fit your Volcano . You have the SH .18 right? I know it fits the SH engine, not sure about the VX engine. I run these clutch bells on my Tornado. I am using an HPI 18t Savage bell right now on it.
I can get another set of plastic redcat shoes, but for only a few dollars difference, would the aluminum perform differently? Yeah, I have an SH 18. How does an 18T bell work on the SH 18? Do you have the stock Volcano center tranny, or a different one? I have the direct-drive like in the Shockwave, and I think my 16T bell makes it geared a little high, so I'm thinking 12T or 13T will give some better low end good power.
You said it's just reving on an incline. Does it drive fine on flat ground? It could be a number of things. Besides the possibility of the clutch shoes, are your center dog bones slipping at the diffs? Check your grub screws. Do you have a stripped diff? Is it reving under any condition - stripped spur gear?
It drives ok on level, in grass/sand and other rough terrain it runs kinda slow, even though the engine sounds like its revving pretty well. On hard pack/concrete, the engine revs up pretty quick, but the truck accelerates slowly. The top end isn't what it used to be with a new motor and all stock gearing, but its still up there. Since it does go I assume the grub screws/drive cups are all fine and I know the spur is brand new. When I hold it in the air the tires get up to speed and balloon up pretty quick, so I assume its just a stupid clutch that is failing to transfer the power when its pulling against the weight of the truck.. Again, since it drives a little and seems to work when held in the air, I'm making the assumption that the diffs are still good too. As for the engine, I have no idea. I'll try the glow plug and a retune from factory settings next weekend when I get some time, and see what happens.

Volcano S30 Transmission
I've had a Volcano for almost 10 months, and its a blast to drive. It's only a basher, so I think a 2-speed would be kinda fun. However, I believe the Tornado S30 tranny is geared much higher than the Volcano's, because they both have the same engine and diffs, and the Volcano has much larger tires. I'm looking for a 2-speed tranny that can be remotely shifted from 1st to 2nd (no reverse necessary) with my third transmitter channel. I believe the TMAXX tranny will do this, but it looks like a bear to fit it into the Volcano. I don't even think it is possible. Is there any transmission that can be "manually" shifted, that could be made to fit a Volcano, or is this basically impossible with the stock chassis?

RE: Upgrade Volcano S30 Engine
That .28 is just nuts!!! With the right gearing, you could get MASSIVE bottom-end; it's already crazy enough! When you say "convert the rotary carb to slide carb," do you mean just buy a different carburator, or actually modify the stock one? Also, I wonder if the SH .28 would bolt up just the same as the Axial, because I've had great luck with my SH .18, and I can get the .28 for ~$90 with Redcat's engine replacement program. As for the pipe, what would happen if I used the stock tuned pipe on my truck, and just bought a header that will fit the new engine? Would the pipe (designed for my SH .18) not be of the proper size/shape for a larger engine?

RE: Upgrade Volcano S30 Engine
I'll try that tomorrow. What worries me is that if I just start the truck, and then hit the gas, it instantly dies. I have to hold the throttle while starting, and then it will run, only bogging after idling for awhile. The bogging means its righ, I suppose, but what about the instant dieing immediately after starting? Does this not mean it is already too lean?
ORIGINAL: Dads like rc too If it's too lean it will just stall.
I start the truck, LEAVE THE IGNITOR ON, and hit the gas, and the engine just stops. If I start it at partial thottle and hold the truck while I pull off the starter, then it runs like a champ until its allowed to idle for 3+ seconds, and then when I go to accellerate it bogs a little but runs. I think factory default on the LSN is like 2 1/2 turns out, mine is darn close to that, (so farily rich on the LSN), but it still basically stalls when I try to go from a complete stop...

What you said about the suspension makes a lot of sense now I think of it, and the damaged diffs are what I was worried about. Even with a metal spur, I'm afraid that much power would just break something else in that center tranny. I'll look into suspension tuning as well as a clutch bell with a couple less teeth, and see what happens.
ORIGINAL: jeffie8696 The 21 and 28 are big block engines and the 18 is a small block.
Yeah, so the chassis would need to be drilled to accept the larger engine mounts. I've seen videos of a CEN .26 in a Volcano (see below), so I'd assume that a .21 SH should fit, even if the larger .28 does not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsvoJEa0GxU

Upgrade Volcano S30 Engine
I've had a Volcano S30 for several months now, and have run a few gallons of fuel through it. The stock SH .18 is still running strong, but lacks low-end torque (I've seen too many vids of people with Savages pulling wheelies...). With Redcat's engine replacement program, I can get an SH .28 for ~$90 when my .18 dies. I can't, however, seem to find dimensions for the engine mounts. I'm fine with drilling the chassis to accept the new engine mounts, but I just don't know if it will fit. Also, will the power of a .28 destroy the driveline, or would it be able to handle it? I'm trying to decide if it would be practical and/or possible to put either an SH .21 or a .28 in my Volcano, but I've never seen either engine in person and I can't find useful measurements online. Also, redcats seem to be notorious for having weak drivelines, but I've hardly broken anything and I drive like a madman (broke one dogbone after rolling down a 60 degree embankent for 50+ feet, and bent the chassis a little when my brother accellerated into a curb). Granted, the body and the tops of the shock towers look like hell (thanks to the above-mentioned rolling down a cliff and sliding 10 feet upside down on asphalt without the body on), but nothing's ever really broke on me. So, I'm confident I could mount the engine in the truck provided it will physically fit, but will a .21 or .28 wreak the driveline? Also, what will be the ramifications on the already-short runtime with a big-block engine, and is there any larger fuel tank I can replace the stock one with without zip-tying it into place? Lastly, with a monster engine and RWD only, I'd imagine wheelies would be pretty impressive. If anyone has tried this, or anything similar, what are your thoughts about the feasibility of a big-block Volcano?

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread
Yeah, the gear mesh is good. That's one of the first things I checked. The gears in the center diff turn, but the other 2 diffs do not. Thanks for the info on the drive cups. I didn't know about that. However, I've run the truck for over a gallon and had no problems, other than as-yet undiagnosed problem in the center differential. That would be 2 full sets of drive cups by now, which is more expensive than a set of failed dogbones. Is there some disadvantage to replacing the drive cups less often, and having an occasional broken dogbone, or would that be a cheaper, equally effective route?
